Given the tragic cases of people who died and for months if not years the body remained undiscovered, shouldn’t it be a matter of having the police do a welfare check and break down the door if needs be, especially if a child is involved
I blame the housing authority. They need to be more diligent in vetting applicants and follow up visits to verify tenancy. Utilities should be required to notify the housing authority who is paying the bill. Banks should be given the database of tenant names and required to report monthly any account associated with the names on the database. To stop the fraud, close the loopholes. Also post office should be required to notify of address changes of names on the database. If agencies work together, fraud will drop drastically.
They need to check these ppl BEFORE they agree to give them a house like they do after they discover the fraud. This would definitely cut down significantly on fraud. They should also do yearly checks on them as well to make sure they don't have any other properties.
Why are the investigations so slow? Why do these people get away with this for so long? The penalties need to be much higher, with more jail time. Banned from social housing forever. What is the point of giving a suspended sentence? It's a joke. How is that going to put anyone off doing!
I've worked in housing and the honest answer is that there are too many referrals and not enough staff to investigate. Sometimes investigations only get so far and then evidence doesn't secure convictions etc. Sometimes the referrals are malicious, sometimes it takes so long to get court dates/warrants etc. There's backlog in every step of the way which is why it takes so long. The process of investigating is expensive and time-consuming
So they abused the system and the taxpayer pays the bill They are sent to jail if caught and the taxpayers pays the bill again. How is that a punishment? Why not just a very big fine? Give back all the money stolen with big interests and no more rights to apply for council.
I agree jailing just costs taxpayers money - They should have to payback to council all money they stole and they should also have to pay the tenants they sublet to all the money they paid because they are now homeless and they were SCAMMED then on top of all of that they should have to pay a whopping fine !!! - Garnish their wages - if they refuse to work - put them to work picking up garbage, cleaning bathrooms in public buildings with NO PAY and the money they would normally pay a worker for that, they use to pay back the council the tenants they scammed and a fine - that will take most of them about 10 plus years to pay all that back, basically working 40-50 hrs a week for nothing and if we have to house them because we are taking all their money put them in the worst temp housing available - totally shared accommodations If UK Gov started doing that, maybe people would stop this crap of subletting their places and UK needs to have a better connected computer system - do you all not have social security #'s of some type - here in the states banks, creditors, government can find anything out about yu by your SS# - i realize it would not work for the one woman who stole someones identity, but surely it would catch out a lot of these people
Seems as though the council should have their own baliffs assigned to them. Maybe even retired cops or baliffs? Seems silly that a council should have to wait for a high court writ & baliffs to do an eviction.
That used to be called a moonlight flit. When we moved into a council flat in the 70s, we were told the last tenants had built up a huge rent arrears and then just disappeared during the night leaving everything behind. The council had to clear the flat and completely redecorate before we could move in.
I remember my gran telling me when she was a kid years ago what they used to have was housing inspectors that would turn up without letting anyone know to make sure you were keeping the house clean and their was no subletting they’d turn up every few weeks they should do that again

“Give them to families in genuine need.” AKA people who have every reason not to work when they’re capable of doing so and come into the Council office yelling about how it’s not fair that they’re expected to be adults and pay for themselves and they NEED help and deserve a cheap house with a garden! 🙄
The current costs of living crisis will drive more council tenants to sublet their homes or overcrowding their homes. People are really suffering at the moment. It's not ok to sublet or leave their council homes I agree.

After 15 years waiting on my council housing waiting list ive finally been housed and over the moon, these people who sublet council/housing association propertys should be blacklisted and never be allowed one again banned for life and give longer prison sentences.
People waiting since the 1980s.... how are they not at the top of the list? How do you burry someone in need for that long???? This system seems like it needs an overhaul.

with respect, what country do you live in? In the UK, working a low-paid job wouldn't be able to afford anything other than social housing or a room in houseshare. a room in houseshare costs sometimes even more than 1 bedroom flat from social housing association. regards.
Here's A very good idea for all of the British people. This is what we do over here in the United States we have on every housing complex an on the site manager. Those people actually live on the property so they can have around the clock maintainence to make any and all necessary repairs or emergency repairs such as the water pipes breaking or an electrical wiring problems. And it's the on site managers job to screen every single person before the rent to fill out an application and then they put it through a thorough back round check even with the housing authorities & the police and the courts. and the person who wishes to rent they have to have excellent credit. And any tenant that has any kind of criminal charges they are automatically refused for the safety of the other tenants. And when the tenant moves out they do an on site inspection and if any damages to the property the tenant when they sign the rental agreement will clearly state that the tenant is held legally responsible and anyone who is late paying the rent even if the tenant is late 30-days the tenant will be given A 30-day eviction notice or even A 48-hour eviction notice that's when the manager and the police will have every legal right to go in after the eviction notice is served to remove the tenant. And if that happens it will go on your rental record and no one will never rent to you. plus the On-site manager can easily catch anyone committing A fraud or give A 30-day eviction to remove the person who is not on the rental agreement.
That great but in Britain the law seems to suck. Someone can squat in a house and you have to go to court to get them out! Even then they don’t leave. You have to pay a bailiff to throw them out. I watched a UK program a while ago and a couple moved out of their house for two weeks while they did a Reno. Squatters moved in and it took months and months for them to get them out! Plus the woman was was expecting a baby. These poor people had to leave in a small room with their newborn at her moms place. While the squatters enjoyed their home free of charge. What a joke.
Council still gets the money, so who cares? Someone gets a roof over their heads? Obviously the "problem" can only be countered with more council housing. Some regulations are just so stupid that they are bound to be broken. All i see in these series are a bunch of snitch ass neighbours. :(
The person the sublet to us deprived of legal rights if something goes wrong. That was a three bedroom house that would have been a sought after property for someone on the list. Just as when you rent privately you don’t get to decide who gets to live in someone else’s home neither do you when you get a council home.
There needs to be more afordable houses. The problem with the criminals that sublet is that they do it to people that can afford twice the rent and not to homeless people.
With all the council blocks that have been sold around London in the last 10years, demolished and now are luxury flats that are only afforded the super rich… why weren’t those millions made by these suspicious sales invested to build more homes? Although catching these fraudsters is long overdue, kicking them out and giving their flats to deserving families isn’t going to solve the problem. The demand far outweighs supply, the only real solution is to build new homes. And finally, why make the problem worse by letting some tenants buy their council homes? If they have the money to pay for the home even at a discounted rate they have the money to live else where, why not give those homes to deserving families as well?

so the focus is on the properties, their primary concern, not on the Tenants' wellbeing, since they don't report Them missing to the Police, just go, check, Nobody on the premises-ok, repossess. it's ridiculous. anything can happen, People get kidnapped, murdered, forced into slavery, and what not. but no, their primary concern is "you're not here-we want the property back for somebody else, who can pay us the rent", kind of no empathy. I also find it out of line that they hound the over 60 years old Lady, Who's unwell and gone back to her country probably to see her Family, when for all they know She can come back at any time, and are depriving Her of the property. as long as She's paying rent, it's none of their business where in the world She is. or maybe social housing Tenants are not allowed a vacation abroad. seems like some kind of dictatorship where One's being monitored and dictated what One is allowed to do, where One is allowed to go, etc. ludicrous.
