Schrodingers Box Why would anyone thumbs down any of your videos? They're all informative, interesting and accurate. It must be someone who manufactures plugs, wires, and coils for a living and they're afraid you're going to cut in to their profits. LOL!!

Another great video! If i have a crank no start at work with no sounding fuel pump prime (vehicle dependent), my go to tools are usually a dead blow and a test light lol

dreamer2355 Nothing wrong this the dead blow test! But is it bad fuel pump or are you shaking up a loose ground to the frame? Still need to directly test the pump to be 100%

Nice video, i would like you if you can make a video tutorial when you apply voltage at the relay box to the fuel pump. I was confused in the relay box part when you applied voltage with the power probe, because some people fried the PCM

think I still would have push reset on inertia switch . Ive had a ton of those short out. before I crawled under car. still good vid though

bob b Yeah it would not be a bad idea- the inertia switch is on power side after the fuse so it was a valid explanation based on the data. But I actually have never seen one short out so I went in direction of what I thought was most likely. Had I not seen 12V at the pump connector that would have been my next target for sure.

Schrodingers Box Funny story.........when I worked at the Tune-Up shop (MANY years ago), we had a car towed in......no start. I don't remember why, but one of the first things I did was crawl in and look for the Inertia Switch. It was a Ford. The inertia switches in those cars were deep inside the trunk area, not up under the dash like on some F-150's now. Oh yeah, I think I went out and asked the customer what happened moments before the car died. She said they ran over some rough railroad tracks. Bingo-the little light in my brain went on----to the Inertia switch we go. So this is some kind of hatch back, like an Escort or something. So I've got the tailgate up and I'm rummaging through like five loads of laundry clothes in the back. Finally I find the switch and reset it. Just then the "Service Writer" comes out and tells me the customer wants to know why I am rummaging through the inside of her car. So I have to explain the concept of the Inertia switch to the Service Manager, and he relay's (no pun intended) the reason to the customer. Happy ending. I get the car started in 5 minutes from it coming into the bay, customer happy (I assume). And I learned something besides.

I need your help, 2013 Ford Focus.. replaced engine , it cranks and fuel pump is working, after cranking, I checked plugs and they are dry.. is there some security issue I need to know about that might keep this from starting?

That’s an easy one-simply Check for input signal to the injectors. If input signal is not present, check for input signal to ignition coil. If both signals are missing confirm with a CKPS bypass. That exactly how i would appraoch this- just keep it basic and isolate the variable as first step!

I got a maxima 03 3.5L ... i floored the car to get to 100km/h and when i let go of the pedal it went to idle (looks like it) i cleaned the MAF sensor ... now it cranks but wont start. I checked alot of videos and i thought it was my throttle body or the sensor.... but now you make me believe it might be the pump ?! Could it be ? Any help would be pretty helpfull

Schrodingers Box before this happened ... the car would, at a redlight, accelarate soo slow it was alarming and my speedometer worked half the time. Traction control allways off and slip dashlight.

@@SchrodingersBox well codes 171 174 running lean hard to start but runs good, but after truning it off for 45 min its hard to start fuel pressure none in schrader value view freeze data first time reads 2nd 3rd fuel sys 1 cl, cl cl fuel sys2 n/a n/a n/a load_pct% 25.1 23.9 19.2 etc (f) 207 199 167 shrt ft1 -5.5 10.2 -2,3 long ft1 27.3 21.9 11.7 shrt 2 % 6.3 26.6 -2.3 longft 2% 29.7 26.6 12,5 rpm 708 728 1327 i cleaned mass air flow sensor, IAC, and sprayed inlet on carb, put two new vacuum lines on to , EGR , going to exhaust purge valve. i have a new fuel filter, but not on the car yet.will be testing fuel line pressure . next

how i get the car to start, by truning the key on and off about 6 times after that i trun over the engine on the 3rd time it will pickup and run .when we first got the car it would die when idling, acting like no fuel, once running it run very nice under all loads stop at lights keeps running great,when shut off it seems to lose fuel pressure, one time i took it out ran ok but then i had a surge after stopping and taking off again that coursed a missfire on plug 1 got it home, let idle it just bogged down .since then i started cleaning parts ,iac atc on freeze frame 3 last column it runs a lot better but still hard to start, i only have code 174 now.@@SchrodingersBox

Your wrong at 18 minutes. Focus is common as muck for the pins actually snapping off the plug that connects to the pump. So it just cuts it down to 50/50. Fyi I literally made the same mistake lol

Ummmm no. Because the test light confirmed there was continuity at the connector. Impossible that there was a pin snapped off and focus is not known for that issue anyway.

You are very thorough you don't jerk around and you diagnosed it right the first time. It is literally a process of elimination fuel, spark or air which is it.

Hello and nice work. For safety reasons, I feel that it is important to mention that caution should be used when applying power and ground to a circuit where there may be a likeliness of fuel vapor because of the arcing that takes place when electrical connections are made and broken. I noticed this when you used the Power Probe at the tank. It even appeared there may have been an evap. line or something that was disconnected in that shot. You also mentioned the tank was empty which would make this even more dangerous given the amount of vapor. In a situation like this where making electrical connections is a must, it may be safer to extend jumper wires a safe distance away from the presence of fuel and then making those connections there in order to gain your desired result. Please forgive me if this has been mentioned as I have not read most of the comments posted here, nor am I very familiar with YT usage in general. I am a subscriber to your channel, yet have not had the time to view many videos, but have enjoyed the few that I have seen. Your logic and perspective is a treat to see and I really appreciate how you provide the auto repair consumer with the same. It makes for better communication and understanding when they are in need for professional and courteous automotive maintenance and repair services.

Like the intro. My number 1 observation for fuel pump failures on identical vehicles is constantly running the vehicle with low fuel level. I only like factory fuel pumps or carter. The rest of the aftermarket pumps are hit and miss. 👍

Steve Rob That's exactly why I am waiting 5 days for the new pump--- it is in lieu of getting an airtex in 2 days, and then repeating this job next year lol

Been a mechanic for 30 years ticket and never saw any domestic car not key on engine of pressurize the fuel system that diagnosis should have been first for a no start all the other tests are unnessasary once you don't hear the fuel pump

Loved the diag. My grandson has a symbol problem. When you turn the key to crank the vehicle, it won't stop cranking, you have to physically turn the key off. ???

You got me good this time. My wife & I were watching together and as soon as you said 03 Focus no start I looked at my wife and I said fuel pump relay because about 4 years ago we had an 03 focus have the same problem and I diagnosed it back to a fuel pumthe car ran good for a little while but then wound up having a major electrical problem that caused me to have to have the engine completely rewired so I took it to a shop a couple days later it caught fire driving down the interstate that's when I decided to open my shop so things would get fixed properly

I find your videos really interesting. I majored in auto mechanics some 20 years ago in high school. I chose to pursue other career interests, but long before that and to this day I still love working on vehicles, and your videos are a different slant on things, and after all these years I am embracing the "high tech" ways of diagnostics and figuring all this new age out. Great video. Thanks for your time and effort sharing your knowledge. You got what it takes to be a good teacher on this matter. Super, this will help me get my 1999 Suburban up and running again. Stopped working while it was parked with no so much use. A couple of more test but more than likely it is the pump. Although I can hear the noise when it energizes. I changed the Cam and Crankshaft sensors alerady... We'll see. Thanks.

Thank you for the tutorial! That car has a Fuel Pump Module, is a returnless system so the Fuel pump module controls the fuel pump with a PWM signal, that relay you are energizing will not turn the fuel pump on it will only send 12v to the module

im a good mechanic i have a page on facebook and i get lots of bussiness as a mobile mechanic. i sprayed starter fluid in the throttle body and the car started just fine ran a few minutes and died im going to check the fuel pump by taking off the fuel filter underneath the car and then turn on the key if the gas dont come out of the fuel tank then its the fuel pump. but of course ill check all the fuses before replacing the pump. after i check the electrical if the pump dont work ill change it out and that should fix the car. 2003 ford focus also has a starter relay fuse in the box next to the battery and if you change it out it could also fix the problem. but im sure its the fuel pump because the car was being driven and it just died. it starts with starting fliud so that tells me its the fuel pump. blevins auto repair on face book alturas ca

***** Actually you can, but not with a brand I trust so I don't have to do this again in a year, and also anytime I drop the tank, I want to replace all the unit to ensure the fuel gauge doesn't stop working down the road, etc. It's worth the extra $100 for sure considering the effort required.

Yes if it was $300 that would necessitate this lady just get by with motor replacement. But as promised I cut her a huge labor break so I could film the car- which turns out I had 5 days to do anyway lol!!

Great video! Couple of Questions if thats ok? 1. Did you only check for spark on 1x plug? 2. That spark plug tester light would show spark in the leads.. can the plug itself still be bad? 3. Can I use my 12v car battery, connect to the Fuel pump directly to see if it powers on? 4. I have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2L V6. Where's the best place to find what replacement model/serial etc.. pump I need ? Thanks :)

Im 64 and have been wrenching since I was 16...I also approach no starts the same way...The are 3 factors involved always...Fuel, spark and compression... if all 3 are there ,you Will get a start or at least it will Attempt to run.. if any of those 3 fundamentals are absent, its a no go.

Great Video ! I did until the part, from Carburator Starts and the 15 Amp fuse, now i see there more thing to test...but I dont know have that tool. Can a Gas Pump during the night broken or be a Filter completeky stucked? Because Focus mk1 reached home with no issues, next day no more gas intake to the Carb...

I replaced the valve cover gasket of BMW X3 2009. The valvetronic motor was removed and reinstalled. I tried the valvetronic motor calibration by turning the key on position 2 for 30 seconds and then off. When I started the engine, it run very weak, and then stopped. Now it can crank, but not start. Should I calibrate the valvetronic motor? Thanks.

Car would not start without stepping on gas, it's fuel injected. Thought throttle position sensor was BAD but it wasn't. Checked and ohm meter air temperature switch, coolantswitch, and they were ok. Fuel pressure regulator was ok per vacuum check. Fuel pressure with just key on was zero but stepping on gas with crank worked. At idle has 35 psi normal but pressure did not go to 43 psi when shut off. I will check for 12v at fuel pump before installing. Thank you for a pro diagnosis

I remember on old fords towed in for a no start and we determined it was no fuel you would always go to the trunk to see if they had something rolling around and tripped the inertia switch. It seemed the old ladies always had a loose bowling ball rolling around in the trunk

To cheack the wiring intergrity from the fuse box could you put your test pen to positive battery and then to the load side of relay pin 87 and if you see it light it means the wiring is good from connector 87 to the pump windings and back out to pump ground chassis ?

Fantastic video. Full of information in a short amount of time. I didn't have to fast forward through any of it. Now I gotta check an old car, 1989 Mercury Tracer with 401,000 miles on it, for a no spark. Just totally died while driving it. I need to see if you have a video on that. I purchased a new distributor & coil because they are a few days out once ordered. I need to diagnose before installing them.

I have a 2001 nissan altima gxe that has a crank no start a friend of mine cause the antitheft inhibitor to activate I have no remote only car key and it doesn't deactivate the inhibitor anyway my question is if I take out the ignition coil out of the distributor can I bench test it and if so how the coil is inside the distributor as well as cam sensor I know how to take the coil out

Had this before on a focus. ....dodgy connector on the fuel pump...they even changed the pump but neglected the broken connector which would works loose in a couple days... Nice channel and diagnostic routine...subbed.

Cool trick is you can just use the hi or lo beam relay and switch it with the fuel pump relay to test.

***** Jack of all trades, right? Yes I remember seeing your channel- best intro ever! The answer is it took about 3 weeks after submitting my complaints but indeed the violating channels were shut down. As far as embedded videos- you are credited for those (as long as the embedding is sourced from your channel) and, in fact, it's a great way for your channel to get advertised.

Schrodingers Box I hope I can achieve half the success you have. I think your channel is great and love watching you test things instead of replace parts. I've learned so much from you and your videos. Also like your humor... The software I use is adobe premier pro and paintshop pro for the image edits. I use a wireless logitec mic headset and tech camtasia recorder for the computer stuff. Have a canon t3I for camera one and a sony camcorder for camera 2. To get my color balance correct I use a passport color checker. The passport is a really good tool in post production to get correct white balance. You have any questions on video production I will be glad to help you out.

The ridiculous probability that the plug wires and the SPs themselves would all fault at once causing the vehicle to stall is so astronomically insignificant, you are more likely to hear Stephen Hawking talking over the phone with a telemarketer about sex toys...What a jackass the man is who put his hands on this vehicle prior to you Matt...he should be tarred and feathered. I know its a long shot asking on a 10 year old video but 17:10 I assumed you probed the green/orange wire in pin1 and the black wire in pin5, I see only 6.8 volts when turning the ignition on. Update: i seem to be losing almost half my voltage between the 15a fuse and the middle pin of the fuel pump relay (which I'm assuming is meant to be the 12 v to the pump) What should I do?

friend of a friend has a 1998 F150 that cranks but will not start, has had several "mechanics" look at it and they can't figure it out, I live 50 miles away so was kind of helping by text. They said it had spark, has pressure at fuel rail, could not start it with starter fluid, two weeks ago they changed both the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, still wouldn't start. I was finally able to go down and look at it, within 10 minutes had it narrowed down to fuel ( I was able to get it to run with starter fluid, not sure why they couldn't), there is 40 psi pressure at fuel rail so do not think it is the pump or the filter. Don't think it's a fuse issue because near as i can tell from diagrams and online the fuel pump fuse also controls the injectors and pump seems to be working. Did not have time to check for pulse at fuel injectors. When I pulled the intake tube off the throttle body the throttle body and plate is pretty dirty so wondering if there is a TPS issue but it's not showing any codes. Looks like injectors are not firing but need to dig a little deeper. Any ideas or suggestions ? Scanner shows rpm's so crank sensor seems to be working and I'm assuming cam sensor is to, both are brand new.

I got no fuel and no spark... but cranks. the PCM is ok. The alarm is ok.... all fuse and relays are also ok. also no rust... fckng ford fiesta 2013.... HELP PLEASE!!!.

What are those other possibilities? My fuel pump does come on with the jumper. So far people have mentioned rusted fuel line (no pressure dispite pump) and failed crank angle sensor. 2010 focus died two stop lights from work yesterday.

I have a 2016 Ford Focus, the car has a no crank, no dash light, when turning the key? No headlights, even hooked up to jumper cables? Key fab works the door locks, and taillights, light up, when she hits the lock? Windows also will not go up? Any suggestions?

On fuel pumps, do you replace with OEM only? Or is there an aftermarket brand you trust? I had to replace an in-tank fuel pump THREE times on an old '93 Camry!!! My bad, because I went with the cheapest available from Rock Auto. Fortunately, swapping them out was easy because there's access under the backseat.

I use any pump. If it keeps failing you need to do voltage drop testing. The pump is not likely the issue. Never just replace a pump. diagnose cause of failure.

You just proved that what my auto shop instructor said was true. "A no start should be the easiest problem to diagnose.", and the hardest, in his opinion ... driveability. Greatly enjoy your videos. The step by step logical path is extremely helpful.

Started as an "intermittent" clicking sound (?possibly coming from a relay/solenoid under dash near fuse box?) and electrical power off/on...(only had it for a few weeks) NOW ... that has just become a "constant" no power at all, ever. (open the door: no dome... Turn lights or hazards, nothing... Turn key nothing ..no power at all... (Except a faint red glow on the little red led near the hazard flasher button, but when keyboard turned goes out) ...and no more clicking either... all grounds tested good, (put jumpercables to bridge anywhere there might have been a weak ground too just to see) new battery, all charged up & good voltage ...but nothing... (automatic transmission)

I would start at the fuse for the circuit and if there is no power at fuse simply trace backwards from there. If there is power at the fuse trace forwards. It’s actually way easier if there is consistently no power. Is much trickier when it’s intermittent.

Hi there, I have a 2012 Ford Focus with only 30,000 miles. Yesterday it for the first time caused me grief. It is cranking well but not catching; I'm thinking possibly coils or crank sensor. Please advise if only one of the four coils was bad, if the motor would not catch or if it would but run rough. I have not checked fuel, but find that unlikely. Would a crank sensor be the possible culprit? Thank you.

What is your data that the coild are bad? Did you verify signal is reaching them and that there is ground and reference? Please share the data.

Hey quick question, I have an 07 malibu 2.2L. My car all of a sudden started to not crank at times. I haven't changed out the fuel pump because it still works but only if I keep switching relays backs and forth and it cranks right up. It only happens on long trips (800 miles one way after filling up sometimes) and if I drive it around locally it'll do it once every three weeks or so... I have no idea...please shoot me some tips advice.

I have a 2006 Honda Accord that has a reoccurring cylinder 4 misfire and won’t start. We replaced the spark plugs, fuel injectors, the pump and even the catalytic converter. Still nothing, any ideas?

Sure. Tons of ideas so let’s narrow them down. What was the data you got that indicated you needed all of those. What data especially showed the fuel pump needed to be replaced? Was done by fuel trim analysis or rail pressure? Also what data showed the catalytic converter was the problem? Was this an S2 vs S1 overlap trace or was a backpressure test done?

I Relly like the way you do the explanation. There is only one thing I don't agree with,is when u said if you where a professional technician you will just go ahead and oder for the fuel pump without even consider the injectors..professional don't work like that..my name is Dauda jalloh from sierra leone West Africa...a technician too..but I like your video..because you take your time to explain.

Kindly help with what to do when the engine refuses to start. Initially, it cranks before starting but currently it doesn't start at all. A scam was done and it indicated that the crane shaft position sensor is faulty. The concern is that the car is a ford figo 2018 model

Just measure the voltage from the CKPS signal as the first step.

Does that car not have a fuel shut off switch (inertia switch)? Working on one now and that was the case. Reset the switch, car cranked and ran fine, guy drove it home and parked it, went to get in it about thirty minutes later and bingo, same problem. Went to his house, reset the switch, still cranks but no start. Plenty of air, spark and timing, no fuel. Fuel pump has recently been replaced prior to him purchasing the car about two months ago. All fuses check out, relay works lol. I'm lost unless the fuel pump has went out extremely fast considering it's practically new.

I"m having a no crank/no start problem but there is a fast ticking sound (from the starter). My problem is highly likely to be the battery and I'm waiting for a boost (my car had the windows open last night and it rained so a short somewhere probably drained my battery). In the meantime, I watched this video and I am so impressed with your skills not only with the mechanics but your ability to explain in common language. I would heed your warning and never touch the relays but I am learning about the general functioning of the engine. Thank you so much for your videos and I will subscribe and I've learned so much already.

Private Netizen Your possibilities for that situation are bad relay, bad battery, bad starter/solenoid or voltage drop at the starter. I have videos on all of these so solving your problem is assured.

~15:00 Another thing to consider with 'painful' jobs like that,If you're going through the trouble to drop the tank and test the fuel pump,it might be worth it to just put a new one in anyways,while you're at it. I hate doing PITA jobs twice. Might prevent future issues,and swearing. An example,took a car in for a trans rebuild..had them replace the lower motor mount,and rear main seal while they were at it. They already had it all apart,and everything was right there,easy to do. No point in paying for the same labor again,3 months down the line.

Agreed. At that point I just lowered the tank enough for testing, but in general if I remove a fuel tank, it is getting new pump regardless.

Great video! I don't understand the mindset of the "98 percenters" who just shoot the messenger. I just fixed my sisters vehicle with a low temp code which turned out to be a stuck open thermostat. But what was the first thing I noticed? Right. A brand new temp sensor. I suppose that if a neighbor came to a "98 percenters" front door and said "hey man, your car is on fire", he would turn the garden hose on him. Keep up the good work.

Rob Mut I agree- I don't understand the mindset either. I mean I know not everyone has a strong knowledge of cars and systems, etc- but even then, you know when you are just guessing instead of either letting a pro do it or at least trying to do enough research to learn how to test if you guess is accurate. If I am unfamiliar with a system I learn about it first, it seems so obvious to me at least that there is no other way. I don't get it.

It was very simple, remove the fuel line clip, pull off the line, place the line in a bag and crank. Fuel fills in the bag. If you want put a pressure guage on the line.. This guys is a fraud I think.

Great video. Might you can help me to solve the problem of my 2011 ford focus with 67500 KM. My car is cranking and hard to start, it will take 5 or more times or randomly to click before the engine get started. Sometimes I tried after travelling the car and I stop the engine then restart again then it was ok but this rarely, more often its hard to start. My car battery is good.

Hi, thanks a lot for the valuable information on this video. I was hoping If you you can’t help me fix my 2001 focus as dohc? The other day I was driving for a while then stopped to get some gas! The car was cranking but never started! I pushed it to a nearby parking lot and left it over night, the next morning I went back to it and tried to start it and it started but there was white smoke coming out of the engine compartment!!! I shut it off and started it again after few mins and drove it home. It was driving fine and since then I didn’t attempt to start it. Do you know why is this happening by any chance?

+689452379 Well, he's actually a microbiologist (I think it was?) with other interests, I guess you can say. And he's (obviously, as you can see) a very smart and intelligent man, with both the science and know-how to back up what he does. Love how his mind works! Sees logic and/or solutions to everything. Actually, I've learned more from his channel about stuff like the electric system on cars (even though that's not even his strongest suit by far, according to himself) than anywhere else. Do yourself a favour and sub! :)

Well Matt years ago I diagnosed my 78 Celica with bad fuel pump ..put in new one ..but then though Hey let me bench test the old one.. it shot fuel 12 feet ..so it was my wiring I ran a wire to a switch ..bing anti theft switch/ fuel kill ..so yes the wires do go bad :)

deepsquat600 Yes my very first video I did had burned up wiring to the pump itself inside the tank- so technically a wiring problem but since it was inside the tank it's best to replace the pump anyway. MOST pumps I replaced had this condition in fact- it wasn't technically the pump itself, but actually voltage drop from inside the tank itself

Hey I had that Dodge Charger that had crank and no start and found out that the timing pulley had broke and the ball bearings went down and stopped the crank from moving and just wanted to say thank you for talking me thru that. Month later I had to replace alternator bc it started whining bad and replaced and no problems. But a week later my battery light comes on and off. Some days my heated seats won’t stay on, other days my windows won’t work, and lastly my brake lights that usually blink when I go to unlock my car won’t work. What should I look for or start at?

I have an 04 expedition and it wont start... im pretty sure it the whole fuse box..... The car wont even attempt to start, all the interior lights and power door locks and windows dont work as well as the radio when the car is in the run position.... I just bought a brand new battery and still does the same thing.... Every once and a while you here on click from the engine bay..... No dash lights either except the only light that stays on is the yellow airbag light. I have tried to jump it with my chevy tahoe and nothing changes....... Any Ideas? I also changed the battery terminal connectors

Ive got a burning question hahah your videos are great but im still stumped. same care 2000 dohc ford focus, died while running, changed the battery it ran a few miles and hasnt started since... ive done new fuel pump and filter crankshaft position sensor and new plugs.. it will start on starting fluid but quickly dies.. its got spark and compression and when i pull the fuel line to the rail it dumps fuel out at the turn of the key. im stumped it seems the injectors arnt pulsing or somthing but im at my wits end. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Hi there could you help me please I changed the fuel filter on my ford focus mk2 2008 tdci I did the prime I drive about 10miles and the car stall and once I opened the bonnet I found out lots of bubbles In diesel line from that I did prime again but not luck of starting. Any help much appreciated.
