Maybe I'm new to the fandom started watching with c3e1 and I just don't see these upset people, I'm sure there's someone out there being toxic because the D&D campaign they are not even involved in isn't going the way they want but this is just a show? Shows have twists and turns, arcs and adventure. This shit is awesome seeing talented artists create this story and world, I've laughed, I've now cried recently(damn you Sam), are certain fans just too damn invested or something? Just sit back and enjoy the damn show.

As a critter… this x1000. There are some among the fandom who truly have an unhealthy, parasocial attachment to it. CR is first and foremost a D&D table between friends.

Yeah, the show gets held to a crazy high standard that really no group could consistently hit, and the critters, while often lovely people, can also be very, very attached people and act out when something goes against their vision for the show

@@genkiwan8949how is that a likely conclusion? Dorian is not more safe than anyone else. If it'll be a single survivor, it'll be Opal, as the champion of the Spider Queen. The more likely conclusion is that they'll escape and she'll be lost. That's why they have already preemptively given Aimee Carrero a different character with ties to the group, who's actively looking for one of them.

I think "bait and switch" is a bit of an overstatement of the situation. Orym has been trying to reach out to Dorian for a while, and the Crown Keepers were the origin story for two and a half members of Bell's Hells. The storylines of the two groups have been intertwined throughout the campaign (everybody remember Deni$e?), and now that we're on the climb toward the climax of the story, it just makes sense for the storylines to converge. It's not like the main cast won't be back soon to continue to process what happened to one of their own. But rather than forcing them to wallow in their characters' hurt and anger for four hours, they got a break and we got to cut to a high-energy scene with its own stakes and narrative tension and the promise of a reunion. Honestly, I love the smash-cut to the Crown Keepers and I'm very worried for Opal. (And hey, remember all that "bring Robbie back" clamoring? Here he is, huzzah!)

Exactly!!! Like we get to see what he meant by "Opal's been getting real dark" also the possibility that he doesn't even make it to a reunion would people just rather he'd be killed off screen? Also it's showing us how desperate even the betrayer gods are getting they are scared

Speaking of Deni$e, I think this is how it's going to go: The Crown Keepers are going to lose Opal (hopefully not killed) and Deni$e is going to join the party. I would be so down for a Deni$e and Dariax reunion.

It doesn't take 3 weeks to make a character. It takes 3 hours if you know how to set up a plot hook and basic background.

@@Chronochrome they have to write the new character into the world. they have to write the character, write what they've been doing for 13 levels of existence, AND how they meet the party. as someone who's had a character death of my own, it took roughly two sessions of a story, just to have the characters be in a spot they could find a new party mate. they just got back FROM THE MOON, so ofcourse they aren't in a spot to intro Sam's new dude. also it's pre-recorded episodes so likely, not even takes them 3 weeks to write the character, Matt might just want a break from constant DMing to play his Crown Keepers character.

Does the ratings drop also not kinda happen every episode? The switch happens after the break, I can't watch 5 hours of critical role straight on Thursday night when I live on the east coast, the break is always when I tune out and I watch the 2nd half on the VOD. I imagine many other east coast viewers do the same around midnight and go to bed rather than stay up to 2-3AM on a weekday night. Is this significantly down compared to the average episode?

Personally I’m not a fan of her DMing style, so never got through EXU. I much prefer her as a player. I would rather have caught up with Deanna, FRIDA and the crew in the wake of FCG’s death than characters I have no attachment to. In the end it is their game, so they can do what they want, but I didn’t stay to finish the episode.

well the thing is right now they got no way to contact the Frieda/Deanna crew other then maybe imogen. and unlike Orym/Dorian, Imogen/Frieda/deanna aren't really that close. mostly they'd just be informing of FCG's death. Orym making a plea to Dorian about really needing his support makes a lot more sense, and Dorian responding with a 'my friend needs me, lets get there'. is more viable. I'm thinking this fight with Opal is going to end with Opal killing several Crown Keepers, Dorian and maybe Dariax ecspaing by a thread. Doriax will go after Opal, Dorian will meet up with BH. that's the best case scenario I think. worst case is Opal will be the last one standing in that fight, and Opal will meet with BH because Lloth will see that BH is fighting directly against Predathos. wether or not Opal kills the rest of the Keepers, or leaves them K.Oed will be left unknown to BHs until some later date, with Lloth controlled Opal giving some reason why she made it there and not the rest of them. In between will be the ones directly god touched will make it, with Fyari, and the bunny girl letting the others get away with some kind of bargain of the 'champions' won't fight each other and instead head to deal with Predathos in return for sparing Dorian, Dariax and Cyrus. Dariax and Cyrus will lick thier wounds, Dorian goes to meet up with BH, while maybe in the 'Big Bad' fight, will see those three, plus the Asmodeous champion and the strife emperor champion we've met all as part of the fight kinda like when everyone showed up for the Cinder King fight in campaign one. were we miight also get Deanna and Frieda. the big every guest character (except maybe matt's ) massive fight between Bells Hells + allies, vs Ludinus+Ruby Vangaurd/Predathos or it's Vessel/Weavemind+Imperium forces.

I am sure that planning for Critical Role episode 92 was in the works before the events of episode 91. The Bells Hells part of episode 92 almost certainly took on a different tone than it otherwise would have without FCG’s actions, but after making arrangements with the Crown Keepers people to show up on April 18, it would have been difficult to scrap those plans last minute. People ought to be able to understand that.

Everything is pre-recorded, which probably adds to the issues. If I had to guess, I'm going to assume it was recorded later. It almost looked like the cast themselves didn't know what was going on, especially given how long it took Ashley to leave the table.

There's no way on earth they got five working actors into the studio on last minute notice for a near 5 hour DnD session just because of FCG. Scheduling is a nightmare for working professionals, I guarantee this was something they'd planned to happen a month or more in advance. FCG dying was just bad timing as this is a game and most anything can happen.

Ironically, cr over the years cultivated fan base so supportive just to become most annoying group of people on the Internet, offended and angry by everything. And I'm pretty sure it's mostly small but very noisy group. I mean, they managed to draw parallels between first Season 3 intro and freaking King Solomon, slavery and racism. After that mental gymnastics, nothing is surprising anymore.

Firefly, Buffy, Angel, Dr. Who, etc. It's the ones who don't have anything better to do than sit and write fan-fiction while they contemplate ways to be offended by literally everything under the sun.

People have been begging for Robbie to return, now that he has but its the crown Keepers they are upset. I find it really dumb, yes i can see the whiplash from it but also the lack of understanding that 1. The Bells hells are down a healer and it seems like the party is rearing to already go after another villain in there story without one. 2. Im sure its a convo between Matt and Sam to decide if there is a possible return of FCG or if its a new character and what are they? Another Healer? These are important questions for not just sam but for any player at a Table. Plus this gives Matt some time to prepare something and for Sam to prepare as well, Orym had been calling out to Dorian for so long with not much of an answer so this is a short reprieve from the main group to see what the Crowns Keepers are up too and if possible that Dorian returns to Bells Hells or not. Im sure Matt is trying to tie in these stories and it will be not long before we return to Bells Hells to Mourn FCG. It can be a Taxing on folks who do enjoy the show when theres a ton of Hate being thrown around. Now i get it Abria is not for everyone her style of GM'ing is not my first choice but you can tell the players are enjoying themselves including mathew Mercer and to be honest i thought thats what fans really enjoyed was a game at a table with a bunch of nerds or (Silly ass Voice actors) who come together to make a story, while not my Gm'ing style i do love Abria and how much fun her players are having.

I haven't seen the recent episode of CR. But I can think of a few reasons why their doing this. 1st, it's something that was already planned, it was already going to happen after bells hells escaped. 2 - Matt did not expect the fight to go down the way it did, probably expected the party to escape somehow, like using the staff and risking it breaking, or FCG using recall to get them out of their or so thing like that. 3 - they need time, FCGs sacrifice shook the table, people say it was planned, their actors so its all staged, go play dnd, that was not staged at all, Sam realised they were in big trouble and they had no hail Mary's left, so he made one.

The switch didn't bother me at all. I really got into CR through the EXU groups that contained onto Season 3. I was more a little miffed about the reaction from the group with Lilliana and once on Exandrea how quickly they moved on from the moon. Orem finally got a little heated but it was smoothed over too quickly (for me).

As someone who tried EXU and is wasn't my thing it sucked that we just had a must see moment in the possible permanent death of FCG a fan favourite and only half of the episode was on the hells. I don't even remember most of them except for dorian and Dariax so we got a half episodes of them instead of seeing dancer's reaction to FCG's death, or talking to dancer or D to see if FCG is dead or they can bring him back. This basically killed the momentum of the last episode and very easily could have been a EXU special that they dropped in the middle of the week.

They 100% planned the Crownkeepers to appear in this episode weeks ago, with Orym's message to Dorian being planned as well. You cannot just impromptu plan that in with all their schedules, but FCG's death did catch Matt by surprise, but this would've happened regardless of FCG dying or not.

I understand that they have already planned the cross over but it still sucked that all the heavy emotions around FCG have been basically pushed to the side for 3 weeks (half a session there, a complete skipped week for there other horror show, and at least half of the next bells hells episode)

I love what the 2nd crew brings but Abria is...just not my cut of tea. I find her DMing off putting. Extremely. If it were Brennen or even B. Dave id be super down but Abrias style is al about removing player autonomy, shouting down the players so her npcs can take center stage and over narrating every action the players take so that a combat turn is 80% her talking and 15 minutes long each. I just.. hate every second of it. I forced myself to finish the episode...but i wont do it again i dont think. Id rather miss content and be lost in the narrative.

I honestly loved seeing the crown keepers come back. And I think that this is going to set up an even bigger emotional fallout if we lose any of them since both Orym and Fearne were also part of that group.

The only way to not give spoilers is to be *very* vague. So, here goes: Just before the break, Orym used his Sending Stone to contact Dorian. Matt then asked everyone to leave the table, including Liam, and then Matt also left the table. Aabria came in, told us we were going to get to see what's been happening with the Crownkeepers all this time, and then we went to break. When break was over, we were with Aabria as DM and the players from EXU Kymal.

Aabria was great in D20, but ExU Prime and TAZ: Imbalance were not it. When the players didn't pick the very first plothook from the Poska NPC, the campaign became a trainwreck.

I wouldn't put all or even most of the blame on her, though. Nearly everyone (including Matt) seemed to be trying to out-wacky the rest with an arms race of "chaos" instead of pursuing any goal at all. I just flat out gave up on them when "we need to stealthily sneak into the city" became "I'll create a distraction," and then everybody had to either boost the distraction or create their own additional distractions, until their entry into the city became the loudest spectacle ever.

If you watched videos from pre-campaign 3, you'd know that they've been planning to do this even since then. I believe Matt said something along the lines of "we're experimenting with bringing in multiple DMs in campaign 3."

I never watched EXU so I was a little disappointed and confused when the parties switched. I ended up tuning out of the stream because it threw me for a loop and it was hard for me to get invested again. That being said, I don't think the switch was a bad thing and did think it was really cool. I'm glad Dorian is back and I hope he gets to reunite with Bell's Hells. I'll still catch up on the episodes later, I just have no emotional investment in the Crownkeepers and am waiting for the main group to return.

For me i tuned out about an hour after the sudden switch..it just felt kinda sudden and weird. Your watching a show where at the very moment the stakes couldn't be higher all this tension has been built up and the sudden loss of a beloved character and right as we get to see how all the other characters will react and how it will turn the narative your suddenly....following a completely different group of people...who havnt been seen in years....and other than a couple messages sent by the stone have not had any real plot relevance. It just kinda felt like..oh shit oh shit moment someone distract them while we figure shit out in the background

Since they aired in back to back days two years ago I wasn't able to watch them both right away and just never got around to watching the second episode. When I saw Abria come on I had to pause and finally go back and watch that episode.

Because of the timing of it. No one cares that it is happening, it's that they chose to do it directly after the biggest plot point in the campaign so far and after FCG's death they should have had time to deal with that grief instead of rapidly cutting to some other group

Here's the thing. The switch had to be planned months out (to get everyone there). That it happened the week after FCG died is just happenstance. Unfortunately bad timing as everyone wanted to see BH deal with it. But that kind of thing happens with live play.

I loved it. The people complaining are either there to constantly complain or will never be happy. The turn at the end of the previous episode probably messed up a lot of Matt’s plans for story, and Sam needs some time to make a new character. Also, 7pm PST is 10pm on the east coast. Maybe now that the pandemic is over, people still have to get up and work Friday morning.

This was a wonderful move, reminded me of the team building workshop in the feywild switch-up. This was an prime example of a DM flexing their creative skills to add to the story and give their players different things to work with. And Aabria is a fucking killer GM, I'm always on edge with her around cuz she can fucking pull out consequences if she wants to.

I didn't really like the switch. I watched Critical Role for Critical Role. If I wanted to watch Exu, i would turn in to that stream instead. I tried watching the first few episodes of Exu and it wasn't for me. Sure, it was probably planned months in advance but it doesn't mean people can't be angry about it. Maybe less whiny.

the only time I saw her dming was in Candela Obscura and the fact that she didn't mention to the players that they were free to choose to live or die there was disappointing to me, only one player chose to live and another player wanted to live but through everyone would die so she just accepted her death. Not really a fan of her DM style as well

Apparently Im in the minority that I either liked or didnt mind EXU. I think this doesnt help the hate when Ashley's and Liam's characters migrated rather than have fresh new characters, making EXU a requirement to watch. While haters gonna hate, making all the series become a 'cinematic universe' and thus required watching makes Bells Hells an even harder chore to sell to people. You have EXU and Bells at minimum. However if you want to understand EVERYTHING you also need to finish Vox Machina, Mighty Nein plus their respective one-shots.

The switchover doesn't really matter, depending on when they filmed the next episode of the main party. It's happened in the past where they've taken a longer break after a major event, and the emotion falls off due to the time distance between the impactful situation to 2 weeks later for the next thursday. So, as long as they recognized that and planned accordingly, this is much ado about nothing.

Honestly I just feel bad for Aabria because unlike other guest I feel like they give her the hardest tasks. Not on purpose and not that she does not want to do them and I’m sure enjoys them but honestly I would barely count Brennan as a DM of Exandria. His story while amazing was so far back and did not have a lot of complications so to speak. I feel like every time they bring Aabria on they give her a specific task that needs to get done for the story to work and while that’s fine and all from a player perspective especially the OG cast members who play in Exandria Unlimited it feels like she has no support. I understand that people can just not enjoy her DM style and I’m not saying she is perfect but just looking at when and how they use her it always seems like she needs to climb a mountain for them.

I've only ever watched season 3 of Critical role. When they subbed in the new group half way through I had no idea who these people were except Dorian and just switched off the show after ten minutes. Im currently sitting with the episode on pause at the half way point while i go through EXU. Its a bit annoying to have to go back to a show that we were told was ok to not watch. Ive been enjoying EXU so its not all bad. But even outside of that, the timing feels weird. The characters are just beginning to grieve and smash cuts away

I was thinking about getting back into CR but Thursday was the big Kaneepo fight on GCP, which was a longer episode than normal, so I decided to watch that instead. Probably a wise decision. It was a great episode. Kaneepo kept getting 3 of the PCs in his shadow stealing line attack which devasted them. By the end of the fight they were all wounded except Ramius.

While I thought the story change was an amusing twist, I honestly thought that the Crownkeepers story was going to connect later on in the episode. It still might do that at a later time. But I knew there was going to be a small number of Critters who were going to lose it and your poll proved me right. But to be fair I also wanted to see what the fallout (bad pun intended) to FCG's sacrifice would be. But all I caught was yet another retread of Imogen's mommy issues. Considering that some of them have hp in the single digits and their main healer is scrap metal, I would be more concerned about that than an estranged parent.

I've been watching Critical Role for 8 months and I've caught up with this whole campaign 3. And what frustrated me the most is that every time the story advances and gets revitalized every goddamn time there's something to break that. And putting EXU in this way is terrible, I'm not watching because I don't have time to watch another big campaign and I don't want to. Doing this when FCG has just died is incomprehensible. It was now that they had to mourn the character's death. Afterwards, it's too late, time passes, we are no longer invested.

i think i would have preferred a episode in between before doing a crown keeper adventure. Especially given how heavy last week's episode was. next week is the candela week too so I can get people being annoyed. Giving the bells hells an ep to grieve and play things out would have been better, then candela episode, then do what they did last ep would have been fit better to me. but I didn't mind it, it's a dnd show not a planned season so who knows what cliff hanger they could have left on. People always get too upset in the fandom, an episode and a half of the crowns keepers won't ruin things and I don't even like the crowns keepers that much.

I was definitely let down because the whole episode just started getting to the point of mourning FCG death and the next steps. Then they all immediately and i will add, with much confusion got pulled from their chairs. I dont have anything against the EXU but i was kind of whiplashed and I was so invested in the next steps of the campaign without fcg that I just felt like i was watching a completely different show and im sure im not alone when i say, the changeover made it very hard to be immersed after the changeover without warning. I didn't get to catch the start of the stream but did they preface it? Like i could get it if they said, "hey critters, if shit gets too real we might swap to EXU." Or "we have a short one this week and EXU will be up after the break" - followed by a quick summary of EXU events. Idk.. i know shit is hard to plan on the fly and running your own business and what have you. but I can't understand how they didnt think of the flow on effect of not prefacing the short episode or at least after the break saying hey guys i know short episode but we gotta plan sorry but dont go away we have a fun EXU episode. Like that would have made more sense and allowed viewers to get reimmersed. I kept feeling like i was getting pranked and CR would come back and the exu was a teaser or something. Rewatch the break before and afters it was hella awkward and it felt like they didnt even know what they were doing 🤷

Yes in a sense but it was done vaguely. Many stories do this a lot where they hint something and then throw you into another side of the story in a different narrative and/or setting. It’s called the bait and switch and it’s as abrupt as it looks and sounds, but it has to have a link to pull it off well. And the link was Orym contacting Dorian which was the essential link needed for it. So again to answer your question, yes and kinda.

You people need to grow up. People have the right to not like things. Period. They have the right to choose not to watch an episode because of expectation break. Period. Critical role is a company and Bell's Hells is a product. Period. People have the right to not consume everything CR is offering and they have the right to EXPRESS that. Period. Having said that, people do not have the right to hate comment and to target and persecute people (just saying that for those of you who don't know the difference between "I don't like that" and "I think that's trash and you should die"), which, guess what? People are awlays gonna do that, but that's not the issue at hand here. Fans did not like the break of expectatition. Last week's episode was an emotional one and they wanted closure towards that and they wanted development and not being stuck in the limbo for another two weeks. And guess what? That is a legimate complaint and they are right to say that, because what CR did last episode was a shot at their own foot. If you think all that can be said about a show is praise and good comment, boy, do I have news for you, and the first one is that you need to seek a therapist to break out of the cult mentality that you are in. People have the right to legitimatly complain about things they buy/care about, and to y'alls despair, sometimes, just sometimes, they are right.

From someone in the Central time zone, the drop off after the break is pretty much on par with what happened last night, maybe a few hundred more than normal I would say, which is probably the "how dare they" crowd. But without stats/analytics of that dropoff from East Coast/Central time zone viewers, so it's just a theory on my part

Sam has been angling to retire FCG for a while now, so I'm glad he finally got to do it - in a way that broke the hearts of millions (Brilliant play, Mr Riegel.) As for the whole 'Bait and Switch' thing - I think with how close we seem to be getting to end of CR3 - and with Sam retiring FCG (I think he may be on vacation or something else - I dunno if anyone could enlighten me, plz do.) I think they decided to take a mini-break, bring back the EXU crew and give Matt a break from DMing.

I think my problem with the swap is that when this campaign was starting and they’re doing Xandria unlimited I had a suspicion that they would be doing multiple parties but the problem with that is that I felt that the multiple party system would’ve been with different days and then they’d have those parties coincide for a mega collaborate collaboration Which it still could have a collaboration where you have 12 players at the table for chaos but the way that they’re just swapping in and out like this this feels anti-climactic. It feels like that they just took away from the emotions of the last episode, don’t get me wrong popular TV series and movies do this all the time they’ll have a very important death and they’ll swap over to a different character and they’ll focus on that character for a little bit and then they’ll go back and we’ll see what happened with that huge climatic event, what happens next, people need to remember that this is not their campaign this is critical roles campaign, and despite the fact that it has turned into a viewership at the end of the day it’s still Dnd and the dungeon Masters clearly have a plan and yes, dungeon Masters. I think it’s sad at the end of the day that if something doesn’t go accordingly to a viewers, perceived desire that it is just uproar. Life is all about the journey just like life this episode or this campaign rather is all about the journey, it’s not about that one little piece that threw you off. It’s about the whole experience, sit back relax and remember they’re just having fun. We’re just along for the ride.

its called building suspense.. its a literary tool used to have viewers worry for the fate of their favorite character, and care about the show. XMen 97 did the exact same thing this last week, with switching over to a new perspective, so that the story can continue and build suspense at the same time. it's likely that Crown Keepers are going to be an important driving force for the story going forward, and whatever happens to that party, is going to affect the Hells as well VERY soon

Talk about bad timing. I would have been all for Dorian returning. They were calling on HIM after all. I got my sis to catch up for the FCG death and we were watching this episode live for the first time in forever together. Then they brought in the EXU team and she was lost. I hope they don't keep switching back and forth between the two groups during each episode, because we don't plan on watching it until it's just Bell's Hells again. Everyone wanted Dorian to return. I guess this is the classic watch what you wish for thing.

Yes but as was said much earlier in the comment section the “bait and switch” trope is done in loads of stories in all forms of media. Plus to quote another person(not exactly by their words mind you) Orym has been trying to contact Dorian for some time, and fans have been passively asking about him and the other Crownkeepers. So it only stands to reason that they’d show all the going’s-on as the main cast figure out what to do. And D&D is a story and that means these little surprises are made to throw off their fans so that way you’ll wait for the crew to come back.

Bait and Switch is never, ever a good idea. CR should have done a full episode, then announced the following week would be the other thing. I can understand why so many fans are pissed off. Not loving what Paizo have done with the lore since the Remaster. I will be staying with classic PF2 (legacy as Paizo call it) I stopped watching The Witcher after season one so I don't care that it's ending.. Thanks for the update.

The most memorable comment was someone writing "3 of 7 people have taken a turn. Its still the first round and its been 45 minutes ".

I dont have a problem with switching to a different viewpoint or even having a different dm but specifically Aabria's dm style just makes it so hard for me to focus on whats happening. I watched the entire episode last night and I could not tell what was happening it felt like I was watching a fever dream. I love Aabria but as a player not a dm. And to all the people that kept telling those of us that didn't enjoy it to "stop watching it" that would be fine if it were a mini series not connected to the main campaign but this is and seems like it'll be pretty important moving forward and I don't want to miss something and be lost later on.

I would’ve been much happier with mat running this and abria being a player. On why they decided to do the switch I know why. Because with FCG dead Sam needs a new character and they need the art and etc. and knowing Sam from previous seasons Liam has cooked him up something fun. Tldr; I wish abria wasn’t a dm. By far my least favourite guest Dm. Sam needs a new character, and we don’t know if it’ll be someone new.. or. If it’s a returning hero.

Or before last night's preamble have Matt address the situation to not misled the viewers. And frankly a catchup recap for events from 2 years ago was also badly needed. When I saw Abriya sit down, I was so excited I hyperventilated. I loved it! As many times as Orym contacted Dorian, I really have been wanting to know what he's been up to and I know, I KNOW that it will pay off in the end. I don't understand why anyone got upset with it. It's good entertainment in my book.

I didn’t mind the CR switch for last night that much. It was surprising and confusing, but I rather like switch-ups like this; keeps viewers on their toes, you know? And I kind of like the Crown Keepers; they’re often a much-needed source of levity, especially nowadays. Personally, I feel like they’re doing partly to stay for time until they can figure out Sam’s next character and how they’ll fit into the campaign. But that’s just a conspiracy theory on my part lol.

If Liam and Matt worked out beforehand Orym would call to Dorian for this to happen how many other moments did they discuss beforehand? I much rather see Brennan or even Liam DM than her at this point.

My theory is that Critical Role did this to give Sam time to create his new character. It might also be to give them a little extra time to concentrate on LVM Season 3.
