How To Win Friends and Influence People: amzn.to/2NELNXg
We live in an interdependent world.
We can't do everything ourselves.
At home and at work, we need to be able to influence other people to do what we want.
Learning how to do so is the art and science of persuasion, a topic that has been written about continuously for 2500 years.
There are many proven persuasion techniques.
In this video I teach you about one of Dale Carnegie's favorite persuasion tips.
Dale Carnegie wrote one of the most popular communication-based self-help books of all time: How to Win Friends and Influence People.
If you haven't read it, you should check it out. It's a bit dated obviously, but it still contains lots of timeless good advice. (amzn.to/2NELNXg)
When you master this simple technique, you will be able to:
-- Sell more (if you are in sales).
-- Get coworkers to do what you want them to do.
-- Persuade your significant other to finally do the dishes, pick up their laundry, etc.
-- Get your kids to do their homework.
In this video, I define the technique, give you examples, and explain why it works.
I hope you'll take a moment and check it out.
Thanks, and my best to all of you.

I had a former boss write in my performance review “Christy is an organizational guru” and that struck me so hard! I remember thinking “well If she thinks I’m so organized, then maybe I am!” (Having been supremely DISorganized a good part of my life, but had been working hard towards organization.) I felt like I had really turned a corner and that comment spurred towards being even MORE organized!

Thank you so much for making this video and clearly defining what Dale Carnegie has used in his lifetime to win people over. I shall be obigated to watch this more than once because I am fascinated by your enthusiasm as well! You asked the audience to describe an example where altercasting has been a success. Allow me: 2 months ago, I was sitting in my sales manager's office going over the cars I had sold that month and he wasn't happy. You could tell by the grin on his face and his crossed arms. He says to me, "Christian, you have always been good with people. It's why I enjoy being on the team with you because you're able to help customers make good decisions and that's why I hired you this year. I know you are more than capable than what you think. These 6 cars you sold this month, I can see you doubling that next month. I belive in you." After that little chat, I never wasted another minute in the dealer calling prospects or closing deals. He gave me a reputation that I wanted for myself deep down and I couldn't perform anything below that ever since. I sold 17 cars the next month.

New subscriber. Stumbled on your channel by chance! Stayed for the entire video, and loved it! About alter casting, I use it on myself and others, I didn't know it had a name! I always used it on myself to get me to transform myself into being the person that I want to be. At first, I did it as a little experiment, I used to dislike the fact that people at work referred to me as my job title rather than using my name. I realized that even though I had partly come to view myself that way, it wasn't a job that I liked and I felt stuck. So one day I decided to try a social experiment and introduce myself to new people as my desired profession. The psychological cognisant was so great that soon after I quit my job and launched a business. So when I did introduce myself after that, it was precisely who I had become. I also use it on people to nudge them into taking action in the direction of their dreams when they are low on self-esteem and it always works.

Years ago I made a mess of my life and started going to AA and they helped me get sober. However my past was a mess. I Owed many people and institutions amends, whether a heartfelt apology or paying debts which I neglected for years. It was daunting to say the least. I went to my very favorite and successful uncle Uncle (Tom) and confided in him what a mess I created and really did not know if I could make things right. He told me he was a late bloomer like myself and told me he had confidence in me and knew I could repair the wreckage of my past. That was 38 years ago. I have a life I never could have imagined!

As a customer service agent at a big online store, a customer once told me that as he spoke to me, she thought I was the right guy to solve her problem. This unconsciously struck me and charged me with an energy to make sure I did a thourough job for her. Funny enough, maybe a week later I listened to a talk by Peter Boghossian who mentioned altercasting and explained what it is. That's when I realized that's what happened to me. Since then, I've tried it twice on other people to see if it would work. One time was on another customer service employee for a mail company. See, theyr mail delivery guy had forgotten to delievr a package to a customer who needed it badly, and normally they never ask their mail guys to go back and deliver a package to a an address they forgot.But I told the customer service girl that I though she seemed like the kind of person who could help me and my customer out, and then she put me on hold and started calling around. Abot 15 minutes later she came back and told me they mail guy was going to back and delver the package that same night! There was one similar instance when a retailer of an airco normally would go back to pick up an airconditioner form a customer who changed his mind on needing the airconditioner. After a bit of alter casting I could hear the gears grind in his mind and then he told me that the customer was free to call him to make an appointment for him to go and pick up the airco. So while these could be coincidences, I would have to count them as 2 hits for 2 attempts so far.. It really does have an effect, and as soon as you fire your alter casting missile, you do start to notice a change in attitude right away. It's like a jedi mind trick.. haha. I still try to use it sparingly, and I hope not too many people find out about it as that would give away the game. It's a pretty cool tool to have in the toolbox though :)

Great video! I’ve listened to Dale Carnegie’s books over and over. I don’t recall him saying altercasting, but I like the term. I work as a solo musician and usually play long sets, take shorts breaks and play late if there’s a good crowd. However, I do get tired sometimes or feel off some nights....but then a bartender, manager, or customer will talk to me about how hard I work and how talented I am and BOOM... now I have to live up to it. But the compliments give me extra energy. That’s my example.

@@HowCommunicationWorks This is something that I've personally had lots of conflict about, and I agree with you, and even in my sales career on an ethical level. And, then I stumbled upon the fact that we all have to right to solicit & be solicited. I think as long as we don't take a stance that anytime we're solicited it's bad and that we have the right to say no, and we also give our prospects the right to say no. As long as you're consistent within yourself you can continue with the internal peace that you aren't violating anyone's humanity; which is a line that can not only be crossed in sales or persuasion, but perhaps even encouraged to cross. It's never worth it ethically or financially, thanks for the great info as always.

Hi Dr Bruce! Glad to have stumbled upon your video while I was trying to search for learnings in Dale Carnegie’s book. I believe that this technique, “Alter Casting” is also important in employee management. I think this was fundamentally my issue with the company I worked for before. I was trying to point out that all they want to do to their employees is to do something that will benefit the company’s performance without positively reinforcing the “doers” in the organization, and it just sucks. It feels as if you were just being fed with rules and commands without any appropriate validation. That was fundamentally the reason why I became unmotivated in my work and decided to call it quits with them. I hope that more organizations would apply this principle so that their employees would be motivated to work and be better at it.

Bruce, How would you go about this strategy for people you do not know? Wouldn't this technique turn some people off because it would reflect that you know them well enough to basically label them?
@HowCommunicationWorks
@HowCommunicationWorks 6 лет назад
Noah Wick So you are suggesting that talking about someone’s social roles or identities might seem presumptuous or even invasive or creepy if we don’t know them. I agree that’s a possibility. Altercasting is more appropriate once you get to know someone and can accurately identify their social roles. At the same time, the strategy is probably less risky if you attribute positive characteristics to the other person, like honesty, kindness, intelligence, etc. Seems less likely for those to be heard as offensive.
@abslp
@abslp 6 лет назад
I could see applying this to a target audience even if you don't know them. If you're casting your net to your prototypical consumer, you should already have some ideas about who that is in mind from demographic research. For example, for my accent modification business, I know that all of my clients have been working professionals, and they all tend to be in the upper millennial age range. They tend to be on an upwardly mobile career trajectory (and hence they can afford and choose to invest in these services). With that in mind, I can speak to future clients from the notion that they will similarly be young professionals looking to climb the corporate latter by first removing a communication barrier - heavily accented English. I also know that they know another language. Then I can talk to them about recognizing the need to preserve their original accent and how valuable culture is, while also giving them permission to feel okay about learning a knew way of speaking that they can use when they want and still shift back to their original accents when they want.

Interesting ... how does reverse psychology work with this?
@HowCommunicationWorks
@HowCommunicationWorks 6 лет назад
Reverse psychology refers to advocating one action in order to get a person to do the opposite action, e.g., advocate voting for candidate A in order to get someone to vote fro candidate B. It works by threatening someone's sense that they are free to respond as they wish, and as a result they do the opposite of the advocated action in order to demonstrate their free will. (See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reactance_(psychology)), Altercasting offers people a positive image of themselves and invites them to live up to that image. So the techniques are very different.

There is a fine line between alter- casting, giving people the benefit of the doubt, and lying. At my age, I am awfully tired of manipulation. I think we need to be cautious not to slip into being manipulators. Bringing up Ron again, I was disappointed that someone was not delegated to checking in at various points of the project and making sure folks were on target long before the night before. It's called a team coordinator. Telling Ron how committed he is the night before, is rude. Maybe he needs help, that he could have gotten earlier. Now, he is stressed out and so are the other folks. I do think there is a time and place for this, to encourage someone, but don't lie. Especially when selling. They will feel this and know it's disingenuous. It makes me feel icky. Also, sometimes there is a weird shaming vibe. As in, " I am so surprised that such a diligent employee like you, missed that routine phone you were supposed to make to the clients mother's. " It might be presented as a way to up the employees performance, but it comes off to me, as disappointment. I do enjoy your video, always thought provoking.

@@HowCommunicationWorks I agree with that. It's our intention that matters and will affect tone. That can be the biggest challenge; managing our emotions. Mostly, I have worked on personal spiritual growth. Your videos have inspired me to continue learning and questioning my assumptions.
