As a Megadeth album, it was weird as hell. As a collection of songs detached from any labels or expectations? It actually had good songs on it, for sure.
@@jesseoreilly1792 The production always turned me off it as a record. It's definitely not without merit songwise but it has waaaaaay to much sheen for me.
the problem isn't getting fans of heavy music to like something different, its that fans of megadeth don't wanna hear megadeth try to be something they are not.
Exactly. I like metal and I like rock and I like some of the rock from the late 90s, not much but some. I don't need Dave telling me to like something else when I'm perfectly able to do that on my own. Plus he'd walk back all these statements later anyways.
I usually like bands who have different sounds throughout different albums, I appreciate how Dave tried to make something new! I actually don't hate Risk, it's just very different than what they "usually" sound like.

You absolutely did not have to hang up your guitar in the 90s. It was just these closed off big 80s metal bands who were so disconnected that they thought metal was dead.
I think bands that went into the 90s got a lot of pressure from record companies not the actual fans. Its a different perspective, because they were told from their producers, labels and managers that people just dont want to hear you, they want Nirvana. Lots and lots of metal bands, especially in Scandinavia and Finland started in the 90s and succeded, they play to this day.
I am glad they did it. I dont want to listen to the same thing over and over. I am glad they did cte, youthanasia, cw, risk and every other not "thrash" record they did. When i am in the mood i can listen to aggressive speed metal and when i am in the mood i can listen to rock and both times i can listen to megadeth. Megadeth is a band that imo transcends genre. Risk is a fantastic rock album
For me personally I had no problem with the Risk album, and at the time I loved how Mustaine's vocals were sounding and evolving during Cryptic Writings and Risk, sounding darker and grittier suddenly. I was incredibly sad when Marty left (and Nick before) because that line up was such a fine tuned machine at that point and I knew that Risk was just a one off. But also I was a fan what came in the 80s from all kinds of bands, and in the 90s loved the grunge bands too and even further back to the 60s and 70s music. If you also listen to a lot of rock and blues and stuff it's only interesting to see a band like Megadeth experiment like that with one album, and to this day I love that album. It just simply has a lot of great songs, for that album I got to see what Megadeth was like as a rock band instead of metal in a way. I still listen to that album along with all the other albums. I've never been only into metal so it was just very interesting. Crush Em is still just such a great rock song with a cool music video with JCVD. I'm not gonna sit here and say a good song is bad just because the genre isn't exactly right. A good song is a good song, a good album is a good album. Risk is a great album.
They should have released Risk under a different band name. Could have been a side project of more commercial music side by side with heavier thrashy stuff under Megadeth. Now that would've been innovative and out of the box, and might have prolonged Marty's involvement.
I'd go as far to say this is the most blatantly commercial album from any of the big 4. Not saying that's a bad thing either, I just feel it's demonstrably true. Dave even admits himself he was trying to reach a larger audience and get played on radio.
You have to explore and experiment with your core sound if you're a true artist, especially with this style of music because metal is based around the music itself. If you have a signature sound and can experiment with it then if anything it shows integrity and diversity. As well, you will hopefully reach new fans.
@@JohnnyJackson-yh9vw Lulu, load, reload, garage inc, st anger...and unpopular opinion I can't stand kill em all. Hardwired and the new one I can't judge because I gave up on keeping current after Lulu. Ride the lightning to the black album are great, and death magnetic was decent too. That's 5 good albums and 6 bad ones. Assuming at least one of the two I haven't listened to is good, it's roughly 50%.
@@JohnnyJackson-yh9vw there's a few tracks on Risk I absolutely adore. Prince of Darkness, Ecstasy, Breadline...sure it's not the usual Megadeth, but I listen to a lot more genres than just metal so I'm fine with a one-off in a completely different style. It's tougher when a band permanently goes in a new direction, but one album I'm here for.
This is hilarious. Bands were putting out similar music already. Dave did nothing unique. He just copied what was popular. At least Metallica tried something a bit different. And Dave would trash this album years later. He's such a liar. If only someone wrote a song that describes him.. Ohh wait..
Megadave has limited musical capabilities. He can only shred guitar. But still at least hes not slayer. What a god awful band. I laugh when peoole praise slayer.
I doubt he has limited capabilities. If you listen to cryptic writings that record has amazing soft songs that mix with rock radio and riffing from megadeth end up really good. However i feel that risk was a little force
Slayer is an average at best band. Nothing really mind blowing about them. Are there Slayer songs that I like? yeah absolutely. Probably 2 or 3. But compared to Metallica and Megadeth who always had superior musicians from top to bottom, Slayer just pales in comparison. 100% agree with you with your assessment of Slayer. And gosh Kerry King is such an average guitar player. Same as Tom Araya who's a very average bass player.
