I'm working on two old bikes and your videos have been the most consistently helpful and understandable on RU-vid. Please for the love of god, don't stop. The deeper I get into this, the more help I feel like I need.

Not sure if we're gpimhg to peal the badges off or coat them matt black to contrast...either way the job will need a week to dry before im happy to put masking tape in it.....just going to mount the tank in the morning and see what the bike lookes like with no more gold..!!

As soon as I read the title I thought, "Oh Here we go, he's going to kill the looks of the Bonni now. With bloody vinyl!!, But. After watching and true to your form...... It's going to look ACE!! I think everyone shold have a Del next door to them. BIG thumbs up from me, looking forward to the Sunday session.

It ain't over till the fat lady sings, you know what they say lol! It's gone completely satin now, and whilst Penny decides what we're doing with the badges, it's drying off and shrinking back beautifully, ready for the weekend, looking forward to it ourselves!

That blue Harley during the intermission looked incredible. Every time I watch one of your videos where you're changing stuff it makes me want to start taking pieces off of my bike and start customizing but then I remember that I don't have the money for the changes I want to do and that I'm still not 100% sure on what I want to do. Another great video.

Great video as usual. It's gonna look fantastic I'm sure. As of just this evening, I'm the proud new owner of a tenderly used 2005 Bonneville Black; my very first motorcycle! I have been watching every one of your videos all week in anticipation of getting the bike and seeing how much maintenance I can do on my own made the decision to make the purchase all the easier! Love your channel and your passion. It's contagious! Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming!

I've never used that liquid vinyl, but I was using a roll of real metal flake vinyl for shelving in my house, but used the left overs to cover my gas and oil cap. It's cool cause in US, i can't seem to find real metal flake spray paint anymore, (only powder coat which requires a big enough oven) and this is the coolest! Its super thin like for die cutter sticker applications.

Can't wait to see the finished tank. I especially want to see you cut out the badges and remove the wrap from them. That way I can witness how much anger it will generate if I choose to do my Kaw Voyager XII tourer (trunk, bags and fairing). As always, thanks Del & Pen!

@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
It's a great way to change the colour without the committment! Penny is still deciding whether to have the badges peeled off, or over paint them in black or a moody look... won't know till it goes back on the bike... but either way, that will be a little while yet to let the vinyl fully cure before we go sticking masking tape to it!

Never mind mate, there is a knack to it, the most resilient and easy to use material from cans is primer, plus it's cheap, so why not try again, rub the tank down, and just lay up 6 thin coats of primer... you never know, with some practice, you'll just get better!

@petergoddard1960
@petergoddard1960 9 лет назад
Love the colour, very classy, and finally the gold is eliminated! Very clear on the hose removal, I've only seen one other video which showed it so well. It's a clever system, once you understand it, but it's no wonder they get mullered by the less dextrous home fiddler. I've been meaning to ask for a while, but some tiny pits of rust are persistent on the cheap chrome on the Enfield tank. They were there when I got it and haven't particularly worsened as I've looked after it. I've a mind to have the tank painted, or maybe try a wrap like this on it. I haven't been able to find out much helpful information on how to paint a chromed surface, but clearly keying that microns thick plating must be something of an art. Perhaps i'm over thinking it, but how might I go about preparing the tank. There are some black painted areas (which is on top of the chrome, and assume that can be just stripped off with chemicals (nitromors or similar)? I could of course just buy a painted tank and whack it on there! haha All the best you two! :-)
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Hi Peter, buying a painted tank is a cop out and I think you know that lol! ...the way these tanks are achieved is by nickel plating a bare metal tank (and I'm afraid that's all it is, it's not chrome), they don't brass palate it first, as they should, which is why it pickles off so quickly... they then mask off an area of the polished nickel and paint with an oil based paint... the best way to go, is to strip the paint off and when the tank is in bare metal, irrespective of any plating, just key it up by hand using 800 grit first of all, and then once there's no shiney left, switch to 400 grit till you have a nice satin/matt finish... then wipe off with wax and grease remover, then paint as normal! Let me know if you get stuck mate, always happy to help!

I used some of that PlastiDip stuff on the resident teenagers bike in - Gun Metal Grey. Looked ( looks ) cool but the numpty boy soon scratched it up with his jacket zip or some such and it definitely didn't handle any crappy pump dribble. Coloured matched the tank with enamel - problem solved. The Bonnie is gonna look real good I'm sure.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
That's why I don't use Plasti-Dip, it's too soft and not particularly resilient, also the grabby, 'rubbery' feel to it tends to grip anything that touches it, and that leads to the damage... this vinyl Frost Wrap is smoother and silkier to the touch, more like actual vinyl and things that touch it tend to slide over it more!

Great vid Del, good to see continued work on the Bonne, I bet it will turn out great, can't wait to see the end result. Question - Would the nail varnish remover be ok to use on my black rims as I need to take off the old rim tape as its peeling off and - as I like it with the tape on - I've got some new tape to replace it - instructions say mild soapy water but the nail varnish remover might be a good idea to make sure it's completely clean, if it's safe to use on them?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Hi Bex, your nail varnish remover is very safe to use on paintwork, after all, you put it on your fingernails lol! It's non-corrosive and will remove all traces of glue, grease and wax, to leave the surface perfect for sticking your new tapes on... good luck with it... send us a photo when you're done!

Great video Del - that clip on the fuel line. Very clever. Looking forward to the finished article. Mmm Grey! The close relative of Matt Black - excellent choice. Do you think Frost's would coat my Roof Boxer ok, or would it affect the integrity of the lid? cheers Barry
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Hi Barry, not at all mate, the thinners in the Frost Wrap are a lot more inert than regular paint and as your Boxer is fibre glass it will be fine... it doesn't melt the surface of the paint it's going on to, just be careful paiting it round the area where the chin bar sweeps as this will scuff it off!

Looks fantastic! Love the colour choice! HOWEVER : When I tried to peel a set of used wheels I bought, I was told to put fuel on the plasti-dip to help get it to lift off. Any worry about fuel spillage ruining this beauty tank? Gonna have to be extra careful on top-ups to avoid fuel on the paintwork.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Hi Jamie, this is Frost Wrap, different to Plasti-Dip in many ways, but very much the same with Petrol, it does, indeed, melt the stuff like ce cream on a warm day, so yes, indeed, we are gonna need to be careful filling up... always have the pump upside down till you are over the fuel hole, then turn... or have a rag to stop the drips!
@mist4620
@mist4620 9 лет назад
Going to use this exact stuff on a front mudguard I just shaped for my bike. The mudguard is bare metal at the moment, you reckon I should prime it with some self-etching type stuff first or just go at it with the frost wrap undercoat a few times, then the colour? Cheers.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
If you've made a bare metal mud guard, then two wet coats of the Frost Primer, then 4-6 coats of Frost Wrap top coat will be fine... but if it's bare metal underneath, then best paint the underside before you start with something resilient, like anti-stone chip, as the Frost Wrap won't last 5mins on the inside, and if you don't paint the inside it'll rust fast... good luck with it!
@mist4620
@mist4620 9 лет назад
Cheers for that Del, was going to coat the whole thing in frost wrap, then mask off the edges and coat the bottom in some anti-stone chip like you said. Just wondered if the surface of the bare-metal needed primed in any other way before frost-wrap coating. Again, thanks mate! Appreciate it. I love how you take your time to read each comment and reply. It's what separates the good from the best.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Dazzle Rebel Hi Mate, I'll be honest with you and make it clear that this stuff is a bit 'fragile'... it can be easily scuffed and it doesn't come in a gloss finish, only matt, also petrol will melt it like butter, so it's really only for a fine weather bike... hope that helps!

hi del & penny, i'm very looking forward to the end result! Because you maybe remember when you did the tiger i asked some questions about the frost wrap and decided to did my tank also of the bonnie, but eventually had to do it 3 times over to end up with a proper result, and actually still are not 100% happy how it sits now, But can not afford to do it again, i set up everything the same as you did del, but every time i ended up with things like, lots of dust in the paint, overspray dots, color difference due to not holding the can at a perfect 90 degrees to the surface because of the weird shape of the tank and a lot of the time the nozzle clocked up during spraying and of course that happened every time during the last coat as you would guess!! but enough moaning, i would like to compare with yours so i can see if there is much difference?? If you can could get any close up please if possible? Thanks Dieter

Answered it dozens of times, ever since i first did the Tiger....the bike is still the same colour...it has not been "painted"....but simply covered in vinyl....and the original colour is preserved beneath....and as the V/5 document lists the permanent colour...it would be incorrect to change it to black/grey... if there is ever a 'roadside question'..i can cimply peal back a corner and show the colour..!

Pure it would, but this is a very mild solution and acts as an effective wax and grease remover.
@Rickus23
@Rickus23 9 лет назад
only thing I'd say about the nail varnish remover is that the acetone is so bloody watered down, and has additives, i think its better to go for pure acetone, my paint shop sells it for £50 for 25 litres, it lasts for bloody ages and I use it all the time for painting.

Seeing your other bike all wrapped up behind you reminds me of a recent mishap while performing respray maintenance. My bike was all wrapped up but I still discovered light over-spray when I next took the cover off. Not happy. Do you have any advice for removing over-spray accidents Del?
@Moonfleet41

B0M0A0K Depends what the paint is, most overspray isnt properly bonded to what it lands on...a whipe of thinners usually gets it off easily.

Thanks Del, I will give that a try. It's Hammerite Satin Silver - I read up from other sources and they suggested either acetone or t-cut.

Hi del ive got steering head bearings to change on my 1991 xj600. ive tryed to tap out the collars with little success as there ain't much of a lip to tap on n I don't want to burr up the inside edges. only option im thinking of getting them out is using a small dremil type disc n slowly cutting a slit in them. only problem I have is bike is in a lockup n I don't have an electrical supply. before I go n buy a cordless dremil is there any other way of getting theses out? Cheers. ads

Hi Adam.....im afraid you only get a tiny lip to tap on mate...usually about 2mm at best...the stem needs the rest of the space up the middle.... just use a sharp small chissel from the opposite end, and 'double tap' side to side alternately to tap it out evenly and you;ll get the... not a good idea to cut them mate...they are way harder then the frame, and as the wheel is round...you are bound to cut a nick the frame tube... then you'll need to have that welded up for safety...if the MOT man spots it, they'll fail you in a moment.. just persivere mate they tap put ok every time if you're careful... good luck buddy... hope that helps.. Del.

Nice work, Del. I will remember the nail varnish as I always wonder what to use when prepping stuff for paint. How durable is the vinyl? Will it stand up to the odd light scrap? I might paint it over the tank on my DRZ as it has a few scratches.

Cheers mate, it's pretty robust, but it is like any vinyl and can be damaged easier than paint, it almost melts if you spill petrol on it... but as it's a temporary fix, you could coat it up and once it gets a bit tatty, just rip it off and do it again!

I might give it a go once Frost get the right colour back in stock :)

What are the two coats of primer you used? Did I miss that? Do you need an undercoat or can you spray without?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 7 лет назад
All said clearly in the video buddy, you must have been skipping... no undercoat, no primer, and no rubbing down, you just clean off the wax and grease with a spirit wipe, then spray it on a bone dry panel!

Moonfleet41 strange. I was watching fairly closely. I guess I picked a bad week to stop sniffing glue... I'm guessing I worded it wrong. I can't load the video right now but I believe you said you did something like 7 and 3 layers on the black to equal ten? If so what was the 3 in reference to? Also the first three or layers went on like white.

Del, I just wondered, have you ever used Tekaloid paint on a bike? I ask because in my early twenties I worked on fairgrounds. Their machines took a hell of a pounding from punters feet throughout the season and that was the paint we used. It was amazingly strong strong stuff but, it was painted on wooden surfaces. I admit I have never tried it on metal or even know if they do a metal type paint. Perhaps you do? EDIT: Since asking I did a check (should have done it first) and yes it is used on cars and bikes. See here: www.tools-paint.com/tekaloid-2268-c.asp

Thanks I'll try it! But I saw your other video where you compare them and Frost seem to be far superior so I was trying to get that instead. I hope they start shipping to the US soon!

Delboy, I thought you were going to show us the finished product? It ended when the paint was still wet looking. Good video nonetheless :)

How's this stuff with fuel spillage?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Melts it like ice cream mate, but all you need to do is be careful at fill ups, usually find that turning the nozzle upside down and holding a rag or hand under it till you get above the fuel hole, then just turn it over and fuel up... that is the downside, but the beauty of Frost Wrap is that you can just peel it off if you want to go back to your normal colour...!
