Have you ever taken a vehicle in to have it worked on and wondered if you got ripped off? Like a unicorn in your muffler cost $700 for removal or the flux capacitor was getting old so we updated it for $3,000. Well in this case Colt was charged a bunch of money for a 5 minute TEMPORARY fix. So we took it upon ourselves to see if we could actually repair it and for less money. We also get a Corvair running that @MattsOffRoadRecovery had Colt pick up that had been sitting in a field for 20 years. Matt then chose to drive it all the way home from South Dakota to Southern Utah but you'll have to see their video on how that trip went. So this video has lots of vehicle repair and revival for all you gearheads!!

Dealers don't want to touch anything past 10 years old. If there isn't a factory part being made they say there is no part available. The ridiculous charge was a don't come back fee in my opinion.

Most dealership "technicians" are parts swappers. They plug it in, run a code and replace what they are told to replace. If it works great, if not they make guesses until it runs long enough to get it out of the door.

Great and fun video; y’all never disappoint. I had Dealers and repair shops rip me off blind over ‘95 ZJ dying in traffic issues for over a year, until I replaced the PCM myself (about 250K miles!). Fixed everything! After the ZJ got totaled by a Peterbuilt running a stoplight I replaced it with a WK Hemi. At about 150K miles it also began having issues with dying, no starts etc. Replaced its PCM and it’s been no issues since (I hope I didn’t just Jinks myself)! I always thought the 2nd Generation Corvair Coupe was fantastic and beautiful! Thanks to you and Matt for getting another one back on the road. Blasted Ralph Nader!

@ericfaley9019 6 месяцев назад
The pcm skim failure is getting to be a pretty common issue. 75% of the time it’s the pcm. The authorized software update sticker does NOT mean it’s been reprogrammed. All the pcm’s were sent to a Jeep/Dodge as a genetic module. Fits all product lines. When the vehicle is built it is programmed to that vehicle. Federal laws requires the revised software label to be installed.
@commonsenseisdeadin2024
@commonsenseisdeadin2024 6 месяцев назад
Diagnostics are not easy and not everyone can do it! When it’s an electrical issue that is intermittent or only under certain conditions is thee worst! Bad PCMs are a nightmare because that’s the very last component in line and isn’t by any means cheap(typically) so one isn’t going to start from the ending and work their way backwards! There’s only so many parts you can bench test or for there to be a way to see if it’s good or bad without straight replacing it! (Now if they don’t give you your old parts back then that’s fucked up, small shops will usually play it off as all parts were bad though and not admit the problem was “only” a single part, usually it’s that part took out the other part so had to replace both! Which is never the case, but I understand why they do it. It’s not that MOST shops are intentionally ripping you off, it’s just the order it goes! Obviously the issue being the PCM in your case seemed simple was because you paid other shops already to eliminate the other steps to be left with that conclusion!

Colt, I have an '06 Liberty, and I would love to see you do, at minimum, a mild suspension build! I have bumped the tire size up a couple and now get a little bit of rub of the rear tires on the factory flairs. This is my daily driver, and I want to keep the flairs because of that. I also have a little bit of contact with the steers when I am turning fairly sharp. Several online sellers offer 1½ to 3 inch lifts that consist of spacers that go on top of the springs, and I am wondering if these are a safe/viable alternative to full-blown suspension kits. If nothing else, you could just address these lift kits in an upcoming episode, I will see it as I don't miss a single episode!!! Thanks for sharing your amazing content with us!!!!!

The dealer not fixing it and your comment about them not wanting to work on it. I worked at a Buick dealer and most of the techs were paid by what the book said for time. I was paid by the hour and got all the jobs that required too much time for the other techs to make any money on. I don't know if other dealers do that, but I do know the techs will squeal pretty loud if they get jobs, they can't make the $$$.

Colt, great video. Yes, it’s a shame that the dealers don’t stand by there vehicles anymore. I have a 2015 Chevy Silverado that the check engine light came on and was told that it needed the oil pump and sensors replaced. I had them do it and they replaced the oil pump, water pump, timing chain and sensors that cost me $3600. After I got it back and a few weeks later the light came back on. I took it back to the dealer and they returned my money and said that they couldn’t fix it. At least I got to keep the new parts. I guess the dealer didn’t want to loose anymore money messing with it. It’s a shame that they’ve designed these engines so that the dealers mechanics can’t make a profitable repair. I ended up taking it to a friend who fixed it. He took it back apart and replaced the sensors and the oil pickup O-ring. He didn’t think that they had taken the front diff and the oil pan all the way off. Anyway, I sure miss my old ‘94 square body. Wish I was still young enough to do it myself, but at 70 YO and a bad back, my automotive working days are over. Have a great day and keep the videos coming. 😊😊

I’ve been told that those liberties are the same platform is a WK1 or 2 can’t member which, right now those liberties are extremely inexpensive on the use market you can pick one up for 1500 $2000. They would probably make a really good basic Overlanding adventure vehicle set up, and there might be a larger audience for that little full-blown Rockcrawler.

My wife and I have an 05 Jeep Liberty Limited that is in its 190,000 mile, starting to not be reliable, death throes. It has the total rocker box rust out, the beginnings of electrical failures, and consistent, rapidly disappearing antifreeze. Otherwise, its mint! I really don't want to junk such a nice looking, WORKING, (semi-consistently) RUNNING vehicle. I'd really like to see you do a streetable, maybe V-8, moderate 4 wheel drive build, that I can follow, to know how to do ours! The dealerships are basically just a ripoff. One of the gauges I use is do they hire mechanics or are the technicians. Technicians are essentially just parts changers, their entire repair diagnostic is what ever the computer says. A true mechanic actually has a troubleshooting guide that gets to the true problem not just the symptom

hey colt i have been wanting to write a comment and thank you but just now getting to it. Great info after watching your video i looked Wrangler fix i found that they were only 8 minutes from my house in Davie. I took them my computer for my Ram and told them the problem and the BS from the dealer. My truck is working but had more lights on than a christmas tree. i had removed them all with my code reader only for them to come back. the components were not the issue it was a communication issue, i dropped off my computer along with my contact info and asked them to call me when it was ready he said no need just come back in an hour we just need to re flash it with a software fix, Something that the dealer wanted to charge me some crazy fees and leave my truck for a week and that i had to submitted my bill to the dodge warranty department so they refund the money since it was under warranty. and as we all know this is a nigthmare and 20 hoops to jump thru. plus drive the tin can car they give you while in service. i needed to leave it for a week. ( yeah not happening )

I lost the only chipped key to my 2000 Mustang in a snow bank about 20 years ago. The Ford system of that Era is called PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System). Panicking at the cost of a dealership replacement of the key, I found the aftermarket community. An SCT chip later, along with the pro-racer package that facilitated tuning the turbos I wanted to install a few months later, and I was back on the road. On the Ford cars, the key light will flash for about 20 seconds after you start it up, and then will go quiet.

Just on principle, if I had as much technical/mechanical knowledge as you have, I wouldn't let an outside mechanic touch any of my cars, much less a dealership mechanic. I mean, there are few exceptions to that: 1. You don't want to bother with it. 2. You just don't have the time. 3. It is a mechanic that you know for years and trust that is going to do better than you. I'm glad you got it figured out.🤙

my WK2 grand Cherokee was doing exactly the same thing turned out to be a bad key fob. Unfortunately, this happened just months after I bought the vehicle and I can never get the selling dealer to do a damn thing about it. They wanted to charge me for a new key fob which they weren’t even sure how long it would take to get. But that was only preventing me from starting in the car didn’t make the car die, and it would also set off the vehicle alarm and all the lights every time I try to start it.

The Dealerships are getting worse and worse. I have 2 TPMS sensors that aren't reading on my brand new 2023 Jeep and they said they opened up a ticket with Chrysler but I haven't heard anything back in months and I have no faith so I'll probably by a TPMS programmer and try and fix it myself.

Id like to see a build on the lLberty. Not something as crazy as the BDS Suspension guys did, but a long travel front suspension would be cool to see!

My Ford Explorer decided not to start one day so I had to get flat-towed to the dealership two miles away. I rented another car to continue with my work day/week and headed out. Within the hour, the technician called and said the car required a Chip Key and I had only left a regular key. I told him I had been driving it like that for years, having bought it used. He discovered the previous owner had removed the SKIM Module from the steering column, taped the chip key into the Loop, and tucked the assembly under the dash. The tape had come loose and the key was slipping out of the loop. He put some better electrical tape on it and put it back like it was.

Same problem with an 08 Cooper S MINI. $300 for a relay replacement. The car never made it off the lot before failing again. Next they wanted $2700 to replace the DME with no guarantee that it would fix it. They say that they can not reprogram or repair a DME only replace it with a new one which is on backorder.

I had an almost near identical situation in my 05 LJ, except it was 8 miles into the Dusy Ershim trail, no fun. Eventually replaced the pcm with a wrangler fix pcm and everything has been working for years now! Were you able to clear the security light on the dash? My code reader doesn’t recognize it.

Always enjoy a Colt episode. This key situation was of course ridiculous but sadly not surprising.

You should build a IFS Long travel Jeep liberty. You have a bunch of Solid axle stuff already.

We had an intermittent problem with our Jeep, when it got hot it would stop running but started with Starting Fluid 32:19 . We thought insulation of fuel lines, nope, replaced fuel pump, nope, cam position sensor, nope, it was the ECM. REPLACED WITH NEW, no problem.

I went with smaller tires on my 3/4t..so I took it into the dealer to set the comp for size change. They charged me a bunch just to deflate them to shut the dash light off

Great video. Given the overall great condition of the Liberty, I suggest a mild lift to make it best suited for your wonderful winter weather. Amazing the way Matt is able to make those Corvairs work. Many years ago my dad knew an older guy who had two of them in his yard, grass up around them & such. Dad "volunteered" me to buy both of then, $200 each. I wanted nothing to do with them. I was pressured into buying them. When we went to move them they pretty much crumbled into useless piles of rust. I was Pissed. My dad and I didn't talk much after that.

A little bit of black nail polish on that light will work just as well with a fraction of the effort.

I just found your post on the liberty jeep! And it was well interesting. I say when you took the cover off the steering column , that reminded me of my 012' Dodge Ram 1500. There was a call back on some dodges for there shifter on the column could be moved into gear without applying the brake. But mine was the apposite, I couldn't even move the lever into gear with the brake on. It would have cost at least $100.0 dollars in shop time to fix. I went home and tore the column apart ,and init as you probably know there was a little leaver that locked the lever in place , Now what I found was on the plastic under cover was a factory whole installed to stick a long rod or something up into the colum to release that lever. Then I can put it in gear with my foot on the brake. That whole I found was smooth and with a raised rib line around the whole . So I attached a little plastic arm to the lever in the column, so if down the road it happens ,which it has. I just push up on it and it release to put into gear. I know I should have sprayed a lubricant on it but at the time I was out. I also have looked at several other dodge trucks of that year's, and they have the whole also. Just letting you know I follow Matt's off road recovery , and I'll follow yours as well, just wanted to put my story out to you. Thanks sorry for the lengthy

I would love to see you do some mods on that Jeep liberty. My daughter has a 2002 that she bought two years ago when she was 14. It had 35,000 miles on it. And it is in showroom condition both inside and out. It was an elderly lady that had it until she lost her eyesight. She paid $2700 for it. We are new to your channel and would like to see power upgrades, and a good solid, lifted 4 x 4. she wants a good off-road capable machine that can handle mud and have good traction. But also be economical to be in every day driver. So nothing too wild.

Thanks Colt.. I watched Matt's video.. Speaking of Liberty's. I have an 02 I need to know how to remove the left rear interior panels to get at the Wiring I think Rodents got at it which I think is inside. My 2 side Brake lights and Speedo does not work. I have replaced the Speed sensor on the Diff and the Center Brake light works fine. The Trailer Brake lights work. I am using Magnetic Trailer lights so I have Brake lights. I can send 12 volts across to the side lights and they are fine. It may be the splice in the wire from the Brake switch where it splits to go to the top light, which works. Mike M Central Wis.

Those jeeps, if the battery is weak, will also do that. First check is the battery on them. My daughters has done this 2x so far and each time a battery swap. (3 years a part about what we get in the desert). Also have had if the battery goes it scrambles the computer. Also the newer ones, wont jump start if the battery is dead. You get them started, computer checks the battery and shuts off once you remove the jumper cables. Does not hurt to replace the battery and go from there.
