I bet you never looked at Bobby Jones' swing and thought to yourself, man, he swung just like Tiger Woods.
How about now? You see, the greats of golf actually have more similarities than dissimilarities when you get down to what really matters in the golf swing.
That's part of what makes them great! Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones and Tiger Woods actually swung the club in a very similar way when it comes to how they produced power in the golf swing.

I go back and watch old videos of Bobby Jones often. He was totally free flowing anf not tight. I learn when I watch him.

My answer to your question is what you have been teaching since I started with Rotatory Swing back in 2014: Effortless power with as little stress as possible on the body. The swing that Tiger has now is so efficient and stress free. Of course I love Bobby Jones’ swing especially when you broke down how he looks at the left arm parallel point in the downswing.

I would argue that what separates these great players is this totally crazy idea that you shift back to lead side even though backswing is still going this is the holy grail that all good players seem to be adept at. Will be trying to drill this into my swing it’s something that is so foreign to me at moment.

Thank you! The golf swing is much the same as it ever was in my mind. What I teach today has been done for at least 100 years.

I thought Rotary Swing teaches to stop turning the hips and shoulders to let the club release on its own. Tiger keeps rotating his hips almost facing the target at impact.

I rotate my hips as far as I possibly can. The hips do stop but only once they've turned as far as they can go. That's the only thing you have to bring the club down.

I agree with you but I am not sure I’m understanding it right. I think the idea is force of motion from the ground up on the downswing which delivers the shoulders square to the ball with the hips open then the just release the club from there. So there is rotation with lower half then momentum pulls the top half through to the finish.

I think modern teaching is a reaction to the improved fitness of professional golfers in recent years. And if you are fit enough to hold off and rotate the body it can bring more consistency than full release. I think also that full release needs perfect timing, and if you hit hundreds of practice shots a day you can get consistency. Most of us can't. (Max Faulkner, interviewed in his eighties, said that in his day they never practiced like they do now - he said "well I practiced until I was 17, then "I'd got it"!)

If you took away Bobbys left knee turning in the backswing the whole swing would look like Tigers. MacDonald Smith said he lifted his left heal to help with tempo. Could the turning of the knee and replanting help with the rapid weight shift going on in the swing?

Absolutely. I use it in my lessons all the time for someone who isnt firing the hips

The Biggest difference is because of the clubs, Bobby had the hickory shafts. Golf Digest made a similar comparison between Jones and Payne Stewart a few decades ago.

Yes, his right clavicle doesn't seem to turn thru. In the latter day bobby jones tommy armour horton smith vid, jones seem to turn thru more. And, it is very notable that he doesn't snap his left leg straight straight. Maybe he intoduced that change with the advent of steel shafts. I can't play without turning my right clavicle thru. Broke it when I was young and it is the only way I can play

I have his book and studied it for years and his videos - I think this gets misunderstood - he was advocating to not use the right side in the swing... until the last moment, the punch release in the swing - there are plenty of statements in his book that certainly does say to use the right side in hitting the ball, he's saying essentially don't think about it too much consciously or you may overdo it and hook... if you see Faldo, Woods, most advocate the right side/right hand being the club face. Hope that helps.

As far as I hear, you still talk about the followthru when we are dealing with the FINISH. They are not the same.

I’ve recently started studying the swings of Jones, Snead, Hogan, and Nelson. I figure why try to reinvent the wheel. I grew up watching Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino, Watson and Miller and just love that era of golf. But I never got to see the early pioneers play so lately I decided to study up on those guys and I’ve been amazed at the smoothness and fluidity of their swings so unlike the jerky, try to kill it, swing out of your shoes swings of todays players. Golf has become a game of strength and power and that’s ruining the game. The old school style of golf is more aligned to way the game was meant to be played imo.

I like your style! The cool thing is, with proper sequencing like Jones, Hogan and Snead, you can hit the ball far and look like Bryson trying to do it!

You can’t use much from Jones’ swing. The equipment back then required different techniques to be able to play well. You can’t swing like that in today’s world
