Lil Yachty's answer was the most honest: he can't name a Tupac or Biggie song. I think the issue is that these young rappers don't listen to music more than 10 years old so in interviews they just declare that old rappers suck rather than face the shame of not knowing anything. It's not like any of them are saying, "Tupac sucks, I'm way more of a Nas fan." Rather than asking about rappers' opinions on Tupac they should ask what his best album was. If you're going to say someone sucks but can't demonstrate the slightest bit of familiarity with his work then at least we know off the bat that we can just disregard your opinion-as if that wasn't already the case with Lil Xan.
@@blindturaga2309 If you don't listen to rap that's understandable but for someone who listens to rap or actually raps themselves, it's pretty ridiculous. "Changes", "Dear Mama", "California Love", "Hail Mary", "Big Poppa", "Juicy". These are all well known songs even among non-fans. They're some of their worst tracks in my opinion but they're very well known.
I don't think none of these new rappers hate Tupac. I personally think they use Tupac as a marketing strategy. They know Tupac is a iconic figure in Hip Hop and beloved. So they know if they say something controversial about him, it will go viral. That just shows you how iconic and legendary Tupac is. 21 years after his death and people are still using his name for relevancy. Tupac will always be the most iconic figure in Hip Hop. Tupac have statues around the world. Tupac have college classes for his music. Tupac have murals on all 7 continents. Tupac is the 1st solo Hip hop artist inducted into the Rock N Roll HOF. When your as iconic as Tupac, people will always mention you and try to challenge your legacy. Tupac is no different from Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan, Elvis and the list goes on. People will always try to compare or challenge their legacy. When your that Iconic, this is what comes with it.
yeah a long ass history of that. from my perspective, I cant seem to draw the line from the "how" and "why" that is...but i remember like back in the 90s how Andre 3000 was getting Q-Tip comparisons, and the feud that sort of started in the community; really strange. is this normal thing in all other groups/genres? am I missing a crucial detail here...
Saying someone's music is boring should be acceptable. I like Tupac, but not everyone is going to like his music, and they should be able to voice their criticisms. At the end of the day... It's all about your personal taste in music. There are artists you enjoy, that I probably would find boring as hell - and vice versa.
@@ShayHezarkhani It stems from Raps origins from being in dis-battles or which street/block/hood had the best DJ/B-boy/Lyricist, there's always been a competition aspect in hip-hop/rap, that leads to fans/stans/barbershop talk having arguments of who's the GOAT or top 5's
There’s a difference between hating 2Pac, and not really caring for him/his music. I wouldn’t say someone like Yachty was hateful or disrespectful to Pac
I mean Kurt Cobains Guitar case supposedly said "Fuck Elvis" which I mean same thing really. If someone constantly told me "you'll never be better than X" eventually I would be like "Fuck X" If anyone wants a modern rapper that worships 2Pac we have Kendrick, and he's great enjoy it.
corporatestatusbrah no fuck lil xan he just like extension and Kodak wack just looking for attention...i get it he's entitled to his own opinion but he got some fucking nerve saying Tupac is boring like his shit isn't
Let It Takeoff shit it’s his opinion. No need to trash him for it. Also X and Kodak just randomly tweeted that out, he was asked for his opinion and he gave it.
Not a big pac fan. Prefer biggie and a lot of his contemporaries over him but doesn't change the fact he's a legend with huge influence and lyrical substance. So while I understand not liking his music for whatever reason, insulting the man when he's lyrically far superior than the people giving him shit... come on
dpez11 did you watch the interview, I have never seen a more over exaggerated video ever. He just said it’s boring, I mean if you hear something for 20 years it doesn’t stay interesting
I totally agree w you - I'm old enough to not just have spent long stretches devouring records by both of them, but also to even remember hearing when both of them died. So unlike todays artists, i have both a connection and a basis w both Tupac and Biggie. But honestly at this point i dgaf to listen to Pac songs. Biggie is still a massive talent and a legend to me, to this day tho. Go figure.
I actually enjoy listening to this sort of bullshit because it makes me laugh. I mean XXX better than 2Pac.....how can you not laugh at that crap?maybe even XXX tentacles laughs at that secretly. But even Kodak Black saying he is better than 2pac and Biggie? But also some oldheads seem to want hip hop to stay with the sound of the 90s. Some of the do deserve being trolled like this
It's not about "auto tune" or "mumble rap" - it's about the fact that most of these kids have literally nothing of value to say. Tupac and hits contemporaries had tons of shit to say, and stories to tell. Maybe if anything that isn't a trap beat with a 100x repeated hook is "boring" to you, then you shouldn't call yourself a rapper.
Or maybe it's because they're annoyed at being constantly compared to someone they don't care about. They didn't grow up listening to Tupac. Ask them about Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka, Chief Keef. Those are their inspirations. Tupac isn't someone who influenced their music in any way. Rap has evolved a ton since two decades ago. That's how music works. Don't get mad at shit you don't understand, NJOvercooked.
If you want young rappers to stop calling out Pac, you're gonna need blogs to stop asking them about him. Outrage gets clicks guys, they do it for a reason.

Andre Bryant you must feel good about yourself. I'm ok with Pac, but is he the GOAt? I've listened to ALL of his albums his is no way the best rapper ever. He barely makes my top ten list. But people don't listen to hip hop like me so it's ok if you don't understand
Andre Bryant bruh that's my birthday the last digit was just random. It could have been anything triple six is just easier to remember. So bitchass nigga don't act like you know me just because I talked about your idol your trying to make stuff up to get back at me. Your a blind Stan who probably hasn't listened to all Pac's albums
Trust me there is so much to write about to we have so many problems in our society more than theres ever been so they'll even have more inspiration. If you think about the 60's the vietnam war produced some of the greatest music that ever happened. Struggles in society and pain produce the best music see the milenials had cushey lives and a massive sense of entitlement with a lack of life experience but the next generation have not had it easy so they are gonna maybe produce some better stuff because they'll be angry at us milenials for being snowflakes instead of being good parents.
I think a big part of it is hip hop has over time rejected the notion of passing the throne. I think what killed that was the shift from "party rap" to "reality rap", before that rappers referenced older MCs with reverence even if they didn't deserve it (See: Biggie referencing fucking Rappin' Duke). That shit died in the 1990s when rappers tried to become hard and some really weren't, there wasn't room for showing respect to OG rappers, so you could say that's really when it ended. Plus, the 1990s rappers also grew up on older records from their parents, hence the later G-Funk sound or Jazz Rap like Tribe, so it was easier to revere that compared to rappers today, who have always had control of their entire library of music. Another thing is that, these young rappers today aren't one generation ahead of Pac and Biggie, they're really two. Lil Yachty, Kodak Black, Lil Xan (lol) and even Vince Staples (who also talked about how he's not influenced by 1990s rappers) are really two generations away from Pac and Biggie. What they grew up on were the 2000s rappers, so the reverence loses a little mystique compared to the 1990s rappers that showed "respect" to the 1980s oldheads. Lastly, I think a big reason is that rappers' statures became unattainable, Biggie and 2Pac's stature is unattainable because they died at their peak. I think self-interest only goes so far, I think there is influences from what these young rappers are influenced by, but the reality is that they have to set themselves apart from what's unattainable. Even Kurt Cobain had to say "Fuck Elvis".
It has little to do with hip hop’s cultural changes. I think you’re overthinking the thought process these guys are capable of. It’s literally irresponsibility. It’s ignorance. The people he’s talking about are no longer relevant. Tupac is still relevant. I wouldn’t put so much energy towards people that are not great figures. Words have meaning and quality, depending on what they say and when. Nobody today has more to say about PACs time. Big and PAC are the guys that have the influence and voice to maintain influence. Long after their passing. Nobody that misunderstands Tupac is going to be successful. It’s simply not possible
Dr Funkenstein No its not lol I know what your talking about but underground rappers from Flordia are the reason soundcloud got so popular but I do enjoy some underground Memphis rap.
Current generations will ALWAYS need to be iconoclastic - it's crucial to the development of culture. It's the previous generation who hold people up to the level of being an 'idol' and then the next generation has to tear them down. We should be thanking them for provoking discussion and making us question what it is to make great hip-hop (even if it's not what they're actually making). There is such a clear swing right now not just in ages but in attitudes - the new attitude is that greatness is to be made NOW, the old is that greatness is something that happened in history. Of course, both are true. But if I have to pick one - I pick trying to make greatness NOW.
I see exactly what you're saying, standards are changing so our opinions must change or else we stay stagnant. how can something new be great if I just only see the past as the greatest
Clear swing of what? You don't have to like tupac. No one is holding a gun to your head but disrespecting is just downright disgusting. Like this new gen goes gaga over domestic abuser xxx hut tupac is not relevant to them lmao gtfo
We say Kendrick Lamar and they say 2Pac We say J.Cole and they say Biggie We say Drake and they say Ja Rule ......... I don't want to be that dude arguing with next generation 20 years from now, being in my 40s. Change with the times or move on.
Of course they were influenced by 90s rap. They didn't create this music in a vacuum. They might not be conscious of these influences but they're still there.
Because reviewing dead people's work (who are also seen as the two goats of hiphop) will only give you insane amount of hate for every think you critique.
Anthony quick advice for making your comment section a little better. Like or pin comments that are serious or contribute something. This way people will replicate that behaviour.
Music changes throughout the years through influences of different genres. Nothing will stop that so it’s a temporary standard that is set whenever a great artist like 2pac comes around. Every generation changes.
Spot on dude, some people still don't realize you get back what you send out. It's easy to criticize others, especially young people for not conforming to your ideas of greatness or whatever, but it's essential to allow others to be great in their own way otherwise everything would get boring real quick and people are going to do what they want whether others approve of it or not.
They say that stuff because that’s not what they grew up on, and for some reason these old ass men seem to think that it’s wrong to not kiss their ring and be able to name numerous songs. If you ask most of these new rappers they’re inspired by Wayne, cudi,Kanye, and 50 cent that’s what they grew up on but we seem to jump down their throat over it
Jesus, to think how fucking EMBARRASSING it would be to have to acknowledge the artschooled, try-hard "gangsta" who was the dancer for Digital Underground and had ballet training as one's OG. I'd go get a real job before stooping THAT fucking low
Johnny Holiday bro he was living in poverty and I'd rather follow that path then some ignorant dumb ass pill popping idiot thinking drugs are cool and doing stupid stuff
Great video melon, I feel like when old heads complain about mumble rap, they're really complaining about Atlanta being the new hub for hip hop, and all hip hop using Atlanta slang (which anyone can understand in a couple days if they use google). I think they are just wishing that East coast West coast was still super mainstream.
I dont see the reason for why young rappers have to like tupac anyways and why this is such a big deal. I love tupac, biggie, old school rap is great and all but theres literally no reason to be mocking these rappers for having an opinion. Saying they "dont get it" because they "dont want to get it" lol. Hey dont bully me fantano fanbase just dont try to force your opinion on people. Some people like him some dont wtf do you wanna do? Make them "get it"? Get what? Your own opinion on an artist? Why are they supposed to like him or "appreciate" him. Appreciating his legacy sure, but his music overall thats a completely different subject and its really sad to see so many people overreacting over this tbh. But whatever.
Btw i dont listen to any of these rappers except for joey. So dont say im trying to "defend my fav artist"or whatever. Half these dudes whack but that has nothing to do with this
It still feels like they were doing it out of clout or spite. It was random, they were completely ignoring his actual feats, and some were talking about the man like he was never on in the first place, not to mention they negged a lot of the things Pac was dealing with and why the music was actually important at the time. We're talking about a guy who rap battled two entire coasts on his own at the same time, and still came out on top, as well as his judicial hearings when he told the judge he can tell he's not paying attention to him or his attorney and to give him whatever sentence he wants and tells him his fate is in God's hands now, very few black people could say that. You can't say someone is a bad rapper (or bad at their craft opinionated or not) or overrated if they accomplished insane things like that, especially in comparisons. Same result happens in anime/comic character versus debates when people try to discredit the old for the new when they don't know, especially in combat (Naruto beats Goku).
Excellent thinkpiece here. Really like the concept of uniting both sides of this old-school/new-school genres, not only in hiphop but in all genres. Experimentation is the only way to branch out.
5:07 There will be a time when no one is talking about Lil xan or Kodak black. 2020- Lil Xan is irrelevant and Kodak is in jail for at least 2 yrs. Yes anthony that time is 2020
You hit the nail on the melon. It’s exhausting trying to be a young rapper with a modern sound because there’s the ball & chain (old school hip hop) always on.
As much as i love Pac and think he should be monumental to everyone, old heads need to stop shoving 2Pac and BIG down the young kid's throats. They didn't grow up on these artists so we shouldn't expect them to reach out and listen to these people
Anyone who hasn't heard 2pac or hasn't heard him thoroughly will never understand why hes great. Im 19 about to ne 20 and it amazes me how great of an artist tupac was. He's one of the greatest song writers of all time. The passion and aggression in his voice is untouchable. His work ethic was insane. His music was great. He means a lot to many people around the world. 2pac is bigger then rap he has transcended RAP. I know many rock fans who hear and respect 2Pac. 22 yrs later people still speak on him that tells u he was a special person. 2pac was also the most versatile rapper he has songs for every occasion in life. Lil xan is being idiotic and ignorant. I guarantee he hasn't heard over 20 2Pac songs.
It's a personal taste thing. Personally, I'd rather hear a new Shock G album than a new Tupac album. Tupac was great, sure, but I prefer others. That's not because I don't know hip hop or don't understand it... It's because of my personal taste. Y favourite rapper doesn't have to be your favourite rapper. No right or wrong answers here. (Hint: I'd put Shock G in my top 5, but not Tupac. Right off the bat.... Shock G, MCA, Slick Rick, MF DOOM, Adrock. This could change. Q Tip never seems to disappoint either. Or El P. And RZA. You get my point. It's all about personal preference.)
I think its pretty much the same way people say they hate the Beatles or Led Zepplin, it's mainly to get a rise out of people because artists like that are generally widely known and respected, so its basically just to be an edgy contrarian (regardless if they geniunely believe it or not). Plus I agree with the notion that its a dig at the oldheads that dismiss any and all new rappers if its not some "super-conscious woke" shit like Tupac or Immortal Technique, the quintessential "back in my day" argument that always gets circulated.
He did have a rebellious attitude, but he always gave respect to the artist before him. He gives props to the old school and said he probably wouldn't have been without them. That's what these young kids lack now a days
Xan said Tupac is boring to him. Big deal, he has an opinion. Even then, he was asked to rate things from 1 to 9. He gave Beethoven a 9. What was he supposed to give Tupac then? An 8? Get real. If Beethoven is a 9 then Tupac is a -7, no disrespect to Tupac but let's not be ridiculous here.
When u said that the lil xans of the world and the chief keef of the world will soon be forgotten forever u made me feel so good. Thank u for saying that. I really appreciate that.
In the future if I get big and any other rappers talk about any legend they I'll just say ya just want people to get attracted to you so they can check they music. Keep all the legends out ya lips.
The fact that these rappers acknowledge Tupac (and Big) as the measuring stick for rappers, saying they're better than him, honestly just proves how great and influential he is. He's the first thing that comes to their minds when they're trying to think of who they're supposedly better than. It's ironic, really.
the standard they get judged by is either being able to rap or not in general, this new class we have, have to autoune and speed up their fucking voice so much to even try to sound good and even then they can't even write lyrics worth a shit if you can even understand the lyrics it's all production and no talent
X said it, kodak said it, joey said it. Any comment section with a video on pac, i guarantee you 50% of the comments will be pac was trash, overrated or insert rapper > Pac.
UV Scuti He thought pac had no clout, which means he thought pac wasn’t influential. That is just straight up incorrect.

TheNadroj10 If U R A rapper it doesn't mattr da age if 2PAC not in ur top5 u will not last long in dis rap game & da drug'z is killin U all brain cellz
TheNadroj10 x said that he's great, but ovverated.kodak Whack said he's the greatest, Better than big and pac.joey just said he's more lyrical than him, which he is.
Interesting to see how rappers don't really seem to appreciate the old stuff. I mostly listen to metal and the vast majority of metal fans are usually familiar with and can appreciate the older bands even if they particularity care for their content. Curious to see if this attitude will change once rap starts dying down for some new hip genre later down the line when mostly people who actually care about the music over listening to it to fit in will stay with it.
This guy died in 1996 when these noob mumble shits weren't even able to talk properly , and he foresaw all of this thing was gonna happen after he has gone . He foresaw the future of hip hop , that if rappers had a message to spread like him the future would be bright , and if they are just clout chasers , they end up like this way as it is now , to take it straight none of these mumble mouths can be close to what pac was , they are just trillions of miles away to the place where he was in 1996 then imagine the situation if he was to be alive
What we want is respect for a lifestyle that's called "hip hop" someone that represents all four elements of the culture. They need to label themselves pop music and give our lifestyle back to it true form
I dont think it's a matter of age, which is what some people think, as me being a 20 year old, the same age as most of these "soundcloud rappers" i and many others my age and younger do enjoy listening to "golden era" rap, the problem is the group of supposed hip hop fans who refuse to listen to anything that doesn't have a trap beat, call any rapper or song that has some form of substance "boring" and "corny", and overall are only riding the hip hop wave because that's what's popular right now and don't actually care about the culture, seem to have become the representatives of the younger generations attitude towards hip hop
