Man that’s a lot of work brother and you have it down man !!! I got a old dodge ram this year for cheap but a young guy owned it and cut wires and put stereos and crap in so periodically some things just start working some things stop working and now no start. I hope I don’t have as much trouble as you did but your video did help me out a lot. Good job brother wish you were closer.lol
That is exactly where I am with a 98 ram that got towed in, no pcm communications but airbag and abs were working, no CE light, no gauges... All power and grounds good at the pcm connector and still held up under load. Jumped ASD relay to force power and still nothing. Disconnected everything aftermarket including radio harness adapter. Showed 1.9V on the 5V line so assumed pcm was bad and had internal regulator failure. Got a used pcm and had vin programmed, so it had been working, but put in the truck and and nothing. Didn't know a grounded 5V line would disable the entire PCM, assumed it would overcurrent then cut off and give a code about 5V reference low. Will certainly try checking both 5V circuits for short to ground and see if the pcm wakes up.
I want to understand and comprehend reading electrical diagrams but my learning disability makes it difficult. I really liked this video alot and it would be cool if you can make videos teaching how to read electrical diagrams for newbies.
Wish you were near me in Texas...I have a 2001 Dakota that had overheated, a hose busted and the engine over heated as a result while driving down the road. I tested what I knew and found the heads were warped due to over heating, so I removed the heads and had them resurfaced and put a new timing set in and still have a NO START, I get a check engine light but it says the ASD relay isn't getting proper voltage. I get no click either. it turns over and I smell gas just no start. I'm lost when it comes to electrical that's the only thing I haven't learned over the years. I can tare an engine apart and rebuild it but I lack when it comes to wiring diagnostics. I'm here trying to learn, but I haven't seen any issues similar to mine yet.
Thanks bro I've been struggling for 5 days with my dakota 3.9l and you just gave me some the cure for my issue thank you for the knowledge man really appreciate it. I'm guna stay up till I fix this bithch cause Florida days are getting rough.
Jackson , MISSISSIPPI , is where I was going to grad school when my 96 ram started doing this. Jackson is the murder capitol of the U.S., so not where you need your car to break down.
Thank you so much, you are the first person i could find who would actually explain the diagnosis process fully and the reasoning of your approach. This will help people like me so much who just couldn't wrap their head around the computer system because everyone explains it tidbit at a time and never clearly. I was so impressed with your video how are you diagnosed it and you had your computer and your gauges in the screen tracing the wires and telling what why are the colors aren’t cutting wires really intense it’s the word that I with use. And we have to have a lot of patience to diagnose that and trace it down fantastic job I watch the entire video with us skipping through it I have a neighbor that has a vehicle same here and had the same issue I want to try to help them out but I’m not getting into that forMaybe I’ll just see if the ASD relay is bad great video though great workmanship and great knowledge!😊
Questions from a guy in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. I really am getting a lot out of your videos, but I need a list of tools. Make and model of that scan tool? How about that handy lime green voltage tester? 2002 Dodge Durango no start. Cranks, fuel at the fuel rail. No spark at plugs. Also, hot here. Those little pins you use.
Thanks , my 1996, 5.9 ram does this about every six months, and the repair shop has to tow it, then replace the crankshaft position sensor. I’m convinced something Elese is going on for this to happen EVERY SIX MONTHS. Must be a broken wire or a shorted wire somewhere.
I have 2004 Doge Durango that I can get started by spraying starter fluid. I can give it gas and it will rev up , but not all the way pass 3 RPM. Idles great. But when I shut the truck down it will not restart.
Hoping you can help me...looking at a 1998 ram 1500 with a 5.2 that sat for 4 years. Ive got a crank but no start condition. Verified no spark coming out of coil. I ran out of time that evening, so disconnected the battery and let it sit overnight. Came back the next day hooked up the battery and turned the key. it started right up. Then, i had a low gas indication, so figured id get 5 gallons of good gas in it to run it for a bit. Shut engine off, added gas, and now Im back to same problem....crank but no start. Verified no spark out of coil again. I discovered the ASD relay and swapped it, but no change. It ran really good the night before, so Im pretty sure im dealing with the ASD relay not clicking over which is keeping the spark off. When I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump kick on, so I know that is working properly. Just no spark out of coil. Next time I go back, im going to start with those two 5 volt wires you were looking at (assuming this vehicle has the same pin outs. Any other suggestions appreciated.
Nice video, good explanations with logical steps to troubleshoot the issues. Do you have a preference in automotive repair subscriptions (All Data, Mitchell On Demand, Chilton etc)?
I facing the same problem bit it has new alt and battery I don't know if they did a short cut and wires looks good and those 2 wires the purple white and orange in at 0.06 in both I already fixed some wires the only thing i have to do is the pcm
I have a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500.Cranks no start. Although if i tap the gas tank with a rubber mallet it will then start. As if there is something stopping it fir the relay to kick in. My relat is fine and i can here the clucking in engine as if they are working. Any thoughts?
Hayes, what do u think the reason is these old dodges dont hold much value.. those little v6 engines are usually good for close to 300,000 miles.,., I think the have the A500 transmission,, do they tend to have alot of electrical problems? I know they have very squeaky suspension systems,, everyone that passes by my hose sounds like it need a 100 point lube job. ha
Lol. I don’t run into many electrical issues on this vehicle. Mostly I get Distributor issues, cam Crank issues.. oh and flexplate issues besides all the COmmon repairs like starters and alternators. But overall they’re pretty good vehicles
I have a 98 with the v6, close to 300k on the clock, engine and tranny are worn out, hard to find a junkyard engine for these trucks that dont have well over 200k on them., getting them rebuilt is too expensive and sketchy. so im kind of stuck. talked to some engine rebuilders and they are having trouble sourcing quality parts. when the engine explodes, one company blames the other company.. lots of camshaft issue.. I think its because of poor mettalurgy. no quality control. they open boxes and find metal shavings in the camshaft holes. out of spec lobes, pit holes, ect.. they have to go to the junkyard to find a decent camshaft.. pretty sad,.,.
The schematics come from an online service providers… Alldata or Mitchell.. there are others as well, but those are the top two I believe.. Scan Tool I have is a maximus 3.0 by Matco, but any Scan Tool can access schematic information. They just need to buy the service.
