Don't get a DTG printer for home use. Instead, consider a Uninet white toner printer! Use code NEKOPRINTS5OFF to get 5% off your order from Uninet iColor www.icolorprint.com/store/products?search=icolor%20560%20white%20printer&rs=NP

He's coming from a perspective of someone who printed garments using DTF transfers as his main process. If you ever started from screen printing, you know how much work is done just to get even started with printing- reclaiming, burning, registering, mixing colors, printing, and then finally drying, just to get even 1 shirt done. It can take a whole day. The DTG cuts your time drastically to print a shirt in contrast to manual screen printing. I'll take the maintenance on the DTG anyday then have to clean and reclaim a screen ever again. I'm adding the DTG to my shop because I'm getting over manual screen printing. Once, I start to expand even more, I'll invest in an automated press. If you started with DTF, stick with the DTFs. But, if you started with manual screen printing, go ahead and save some time and get a DTG printer.
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 7 месяцев назад
My issue isn't as much with the maintenance as it is with the ink it wastes when it's not in use. Of course the cost is offset if used daily all day every day. But in my case, I don't always print. I have days or even weeks where I focus on other things. As for comparing with screen printing, it does take a lot to get 1 shirt done. But after setting up, you're going to do 100 shirts way faster screen printing than in dtg. It's really a case by case scenario depending on what the user really needs the machine for and how often it's going to be used

Exactly. I've been in business for 42 years. Was looking into getting a DTG printer but once playing with numbers it just didn't seem profitable for us. It wouldn't run everyday. For designing art in PS for printing, you should only use CMYK not RGB then print in CMYK. Of course, if you did that, the colors wouldn't be as vibrant when printing to the shirt. You also need to play with the color levels and saturation in PS to get the colors right.
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 4 месяца назад
I did that, and increased the vibrancy and more. The reds just never came out good

This is how I feel with my dtf printer, I bought a dtf printer from China, no issues whatsoever, prints at perfect, vibrant, I can print on whatever substrate, or color I want, and I have the white ink circulation system. My major problem… I can’t get any sales. I run ads, get so many clicks, my prices are dirt cheap for big full color prints. I mean $12 a shirt, I can’t get sales to save my life
@NekoPrints

Ads NEVER worked for me. Try local apps and groups like local groups on FB and post on Marketplace. Also there's an app called Next Door that targets people in your surrounding areas. I also messaged people on Instagram, businesses specifically, and offered my services. Even samples at times if it was a business I really wanted to get. Don't give up, YOU GOT THIS!!!! Also, increase that price man. Too cheap! Especially for just 1 or 2 shirts. Don't undersell yourself too much. At first it's good to go cheap. But not too cheap.

The dull colors is due to the base white. When silk screening, you would put down a base white, and then put an actual color red ink down. When you sublimate, you are usually sublimating to a white T-shirt, which doesn’t absorb the CMYK ink, the same as a sheet of white ink. The color is sinking down into the ink, and therefore getting dimmed.
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 5 месяцев назад
🔥🔥🔥 That makes a lot of sense! I guess when screen printing, most of the time you cure the white ink and then lay down the top color right? Here the white ink gets a minute or two or simply air drying before the color is printed over it. So that makes a lot of sense the way you explained it. Thanks for clearing that up!

I own a DTG myself. To be precise i bought a used f2000 which only cost me a few 1000 dollars. But i can really agree with the points in this video. Especially if you buy a Brand new machine for around 20k€. The only thing that makes it worth owning for me is being able to be flexible with the number of pieces i sell for a single design. I dont have to rely on selling a specific quanitity. Sometimes i could only get 1 shirt order a week and still be somewhat profitable. But honestly the amount of money you save on a single shirt by printing it yourself, transfers into the time you spend standing infront of the printer and actually print the shirts if that makes sense. So if you have someone in your town who can do printing for you i would recommend outsourcing the printing process and focuss more on making new designs and on the marketing to sell your shirts. This only applys if you think of buying a printer for your own brand. It all has pros and cons but it really helped me push out new designs every month even if i had designs that only selled a few pieces of. Eventually i had a designs that sold for exaple 200pcs you will have your money back in no time but dont expect it to be a constant money flow. If you think of getting a DTG to take orders for other people thats a whole different chapter. Its not an easy business. If it would be printing MONEY everyone would do it lol. To summerise for me its only worth it because i cant outsource my printing in my town!
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 8 месяцев назад
My problem more than anything to be honest is the fact that ink is wasted on a daily basis whether or not the printer is used. That itself is a huge waste of money. For me, tranafers work better for either my own brand or customs. For my brand, I'll just order 4 or 5 and keel the rest on hand. It's not a huge expense. Once a design picks up then I can calculate accordingly. At the end of the day, its really whatever works best for you in your situation 🙂 this was just my experience
@TheDotzn

Everybody told my i need to keep my printer on 24/7. But i actually shut it down after work ist finished. If i dont have any business i will turn it on once a week and do a light clean and a nozzle check. Thats all it takes for me. Im doing it for 1 year now and still get 100% nozzle check every time. But i agree what works best for everyone is so different.@@NekoPrints

I have been screen printing for 10 years. This past year I purchased a DTF. I havent screen printed in 5 months. ALl my customers are estatic about it. The prints are so much lighter in feel. Most of my customers are two color prints, tops. So the feel is non existent on most cotton blends. The DTF from Omniprint is a freaking beast. It prints white in the same pass as color. I love it. I am kicking around the idea of a DTG, but that is a different market and maybe not necessary. I would have to start an online store and I am unsure, I want to do that. back to DTF. I buy my inks from China. They are terrific. I can get 5 xs the amount for 400 bucks shipped. Dont let these companies tell you their ink is bad. I wouldnt be surprised if they get their ink there too. The bottles are blank, ready for their decals! Omni's white ink system is the best. Wet cap the machine at night and you can leave it for up to 3 weeks in that state. I never go beyond a week anyway. But its a terrific printer. You need to know anything just ask.

I love dtf. I use it now more than ever. I get transfers rather than print them myself. It's quicker and quite frankly in my opinion it's more efficient than dtg.
@ParanormalResponse
@ParanormalResponse 6 месяцев назад
I was buying the transfers but when I got a huge order I hated giving the printer so much cash. lol. I had a 15k order and gave him 4k to print. They charge 2.50 per print and that is a huge cut into profit, I am in a small town so I cant add 2.50 more to my cost, they will go elsewhere. So with that profit off the large job I bought the printer. Its paid for so I dont have to worry about it. Upkeep is so much easier that screen printing. I was spending 700 every few months on inks, emulsion, cleaners, tack, dip tank solution etc. The money that goes out for screen printing is endless and it really isnt profitable. My taxes tell me that each year.@@NekoPrints

The things you've described here remind me of the shady printing practices during the "ink bubble jet" boom for paper printers. Each of the major companies (HP, Lexmark, Canon, etc) had their own gimmicks to waste ink. Some wouldn't let you print with the black ink cartridge if your yellow was empty. Cartridges would "clog" if not used daily while the cleaning print page would use tons of ink. Others used cartridges with chips and expiration dates strictly preventing at-home cartridge refills. Many gimmicks to nickel and dime the consumer to waste ink, or to always be paying top dollar for cartridges. To be honest I know nothing about DTG printers, just sharing my thoughts.
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 6 месяцев назад
I get it trust me. And to be fair, it could seem that way. But in my opinion, it's just not yet optimized for home use. The white ink is the main culprit, and it's not just with DTG. It's with DTF and DTG. White in in general tends to clog if not agitated. The other colors can clog, but not as bad as the white. Hopefully one day they'll be good for home use

RICOH DTG printers are commercial-grade apparel printers that are designed to be run daily for maximum output and profit potential. Some of our customers have 5-6 printers to keep up with their print-on-demand businesses. They do need some daily and weekly maintenance as well to stay operating as intended. As for the ink circulation, it should not waste more than 10% of the cartridge. In addition, if you're buying directly from RICOH DTG, you will receive the best Tech Support in the industry. Hope this clarifies!

I'm a strong believer in "not everything works for everyone". But that doesn't mean that it doesn't work! If that makes sense. The printer works great as I mentioned. I never had issues. Tbh, I wouldn't get another DTG unless it was guaranteed maintenance free and was efficient with ink cycling. Maybe a bit of maintenance is fine, but not as much as this one requires. What really grinds my gears is the sound of the printer starting up to cycle ink, and me knowing thats just money being wasted.

I'd go with something smaller personally like a Print and Cut or white toner. But if you don't mind the maintenance and a bit of extra prep work, a DTG could very well be worth it. But you need to make sure you have and will continue to have consistent demand.

@NekoPrints

Unfortunately no. The point of the cycling is to keep the print heads from drying up. So ink has to flow through it every few hours. If it doesn't, they dry and clog. And can potentially be completely ruined

Hay just got a ricoma vision I am having a few problems 1. Out the gate the white is blotchy. Even with 3rd party treated shirts. 2. The colors are not matching? Like way to Saturated. 3. When heat pressed it will lose all color saturation. (Like when it is prints it is +10% saturation and when I heat pressure it is like -50% saturation) If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong that will be great lol
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 6 дней назад
You're not doing anything wrong! That's how the colors usually work on DTG printers since they work on CMYK. For the blotchyness, maybe too much humitity in the room? Or you might need to do a few head cleans there's a lot that can factor in. I suggest contacting Ricoma if you can

For me personally, yes. But it's very dependent on the type of work that you do. The machine could work for you, but you need to take into consideration a lot of things. Primarily, what kinds of shirts you print and orders you have. If you print a high volume of shirts that are all unique, then a DTG could be a good investment for you. But transfers would most likely work best if you print bigger orders of the same shirts or lots of different orders of the same designs.

Would you recommend sublimation over dtg? I'm interested in making deskmats and cut&sew shirts, and am looking at investing into a large format sublimation printer and heat press. You mentioned your sublimation printer didnt require much maintenance, is that true for most of them?
@NekoPrints
@NekoPrints 8 месяцев назад
That would really depend on what you're looking to print. Sublimation will be limiting since you'll only be able to print directly on light and polyester garments. My sublimation printer doesn't need much (if any) maintenance. But a converted one will need more frequent maintenance. I suggest getting a dedicated sublimation printer if you decide to go that route.

For the Ricoh, it cycles the ink and dumps it out multiple times a day. Most printers do this, actually. Just not as often, and not as much. Your typical home inkjet printer has its maintenance cycle it does that does this same thing, just on a much, much smaller scale. If you've heard your home printer move on its own or make a noise randomly, it's not a ghost! It's most likely doing the maintenance cycle.
