Dora's Tracheostomy Surgery 

Elijah, the farrier, sorted her hooves out..she'll need another few go's to get them to where he was happy, but no long term issues with her feet..so Dora has a clean bill of health..that tracheotomy was yukky.. no wonder she had an infection when she arrived.. God, it must have smelt bad as the vets are used to smelly stuff..well done on Dora's behalf everyone !!🇬🇧💕✝️🙏👍👏🐎🇺🇸

I was a nurse for humans with tracheostomies and I’m SO impressed with the vets’ work with Dora. It’s terribly sad to think of her suffering for so long, then getting thrown away by her previous owners. Thank you for the life saving work that you do!

I'm really happy Horse Plus got Dora. If nothing else just to get that trach out of her. She probably didnt like the smell either! It probably feels alot better and especially if she puts her neck over a fence and hits it. I hope Dora's feet can be fixed so that hopefully, she can be somebody's pasture pet. She deserves to live with fairly good health for awhile. As long as shes happy and not in pain. Good job Team!!♥️

For a girl like Dora I would recommend connecting with Fletcher Farm Amarillo. They have 40 acres and at this time have 23 Belgians. They are so good to them with all daily care and vet care needed. it would be a great home for Dora to retire to.! I will write to them and tell them about Dora!

I have been anticipating this one!

I know other times you would allow an infected area open to drain as you don't want a massive abscess to form. But because this is such a delicate and exposed to the elements, closure is definitely needed. I have seen it where they have left infected wounds alone until the infection has been treated and then closed afterwards

Great work! That Tracheostomy looked nasty and you know it's really bad when a vet actually gags. Here's to hoping that once Elijah has seen to her feet she will be on her way toward adoption!

I am sure the surgery to insert the Tracheostomy would have been expensive, it would be very interesting to see what her story is. Could that surgery have been done by a lay person?? Pity the metal trach does not have a serial number to try and trace it back to a Vet. If I could have a horse it would be a big girl like Dora drafts are so beautiful and majestic. Dr Gina and Dr Lydia are such a blessing to these amazing animals. Dr Lydia please give all the drafts a super long hug for me all the way in Australia they so need to feel the love after most have been working their entire lives and then are thrown away without a second thought.

Just blows me away that someone could spend so much for the tracheotomy and let her feet go. She seems like such a nice mare. Hopefully her feet will be able to get to some semblance to keep her free from lameness.

Wowee, I felt so bad for y'all at first, the smell of that trache was making Caitlin gag! Yucky! Thank you for giving Dora a shot at a long and happy life. In the previous HSH episode, Elijah was working on her feet, and I think he said he had some work to do, but felt her feet could be fixed and they weren't actually as bad as they looked. I wonder if he's been back out to see her again.

We use those tracheostomy ‚tubes‘ - clean and change them DAILY. It’s just crazy to think this one has been in place for so long and despite everything Dora is looking great. That’s a resilient mare if I’ve ever seen one!

Hi Dr Lydia and Dr Gina Dora was so good and handled that extremely well. Just a bit of an ask if possible could you explain some of the terminology that you use. I am not a vet but would love to understand better what is going on. I love seeing the whole of the surgery but would like some plain English terms as to what you are doing. Mentholatum under your nostrils helps cover the smell. I believe coroners use this trick!

I have been watching you work on the rescue videos and had an idea . Is it possible to create some vet or ferrier training clinics where schools can have students go to the shelter to learn and work? The shelters get the benefit of extra medical care and the schools train vets and do charity simultaneously . I’ll bet the schools would give money for the clinics for exposure . Plus seeing all of these mistreated animals may instill something in the next generations of vets to do charity work. Either way, Great job as always.
