Downtown Santa Barbara 

My hometown. Miss it terribly, but I'll never be able to afford to live there again!Still my town and my memories. Peter, thanks for the great film!

I love the beaches in this town as much as the hiking trails in the mountains. The hot springs and the lush gardens ease me out of the day to day stresses and strains. But the magic I find in this town has much more to do with the creative community of people who live and love here. I will always visit this little home away from hell every chance I can get. LA is to SB what a bugle is to symphony.

I was born here...moved when I was 7 to Indiana. I will always miss this place even though I moved when I was young. I remember seeing the Nutcracker at the Arlington as a kid. I went back to visit a few years ago and saw Ellen's Here and Now tour at the Arlington. Such a beautiful city. I miss the mountains!

My last vacation was 20 years ago. I went to Santa Barbara, California and felt I was in heaven. Because the economy is so bad I doubt I will be ever be able to go back. I am so glad I went there when I could.

I went to SB last year for New Years and it was the most beautiful places I've ever been. I live in Florida now, but I was born in Santa Ana, CA. So my heart will always stay with Cali. I would move back to Cali, but Florida is so much cheaper, I don't think I could afford it out there on my own. Awesome place to visit though.

Just came back from Santa Barabara 2 days ago, and coming home to Chicago which was under ice was extreme! I miss Santa Barbara so much that I called off work and has yet to leave my apartment! It reminds me of the Spanish city, Zamboanga Philippines, where I grew up. I felt really comfortable in Santa Barbara. Might even move there...

This is truly an amazing place to visit or live. I lived in Michigan my whole life and in 2011 I moved to Santa Barbara for 3 months and was shocked it was like I was living in some kinda dream. I'm back in Michigan and not a day goes by that I think and miss SB =/

Growing up in SLO county, I used to think the same thing...but only because at the age of 10 my family moved out of Los Angeles county and headed to SLO county...early 80's. So my boredom was from seeing kids my age all over our cul-de-sac to ghost town on the new street. But as time moves on, many beautiful areas spring up that weren't paid attention to before. Santa Barbara was always a beautiful city either passing through on the 101 or driving in for a night life, but that was eons ago.

Loved it. Full of wonderfully casual vignettes and "local insider" tips. F the tourists, the place has this magnetic vibe that that makes you want to keep coming back. Sign me up if you ever offer private tours that involve coffee at Reds and drinks at Elsie's.

Woww, you really made good points about SB where I used to live for 2 years as an international student. Elsie's and Reds...my favorite places too! I can add blue agave :) I have to confess and apoligize that I badly threw up in the Elsie's bathroom one night..except that, all those places remind me sweet memories...

I love SB. I thought it was amazing the last 2 weeks I spent there, and so want to live there. Just didn't get a job. :( Then, when I return to dry-ass Denver, I get a call from the cake shop? WOW. Things do move a little slower though, I guess. Thanks for the beautiful tour.

Nice video! I love the reason you got fired from the Arlington... Really a sweet town, man! I just spent a week in SB at the film festival. We had a film in the fest(Automorphosis, about art cars!), and saw many great films including the local doc called The Women and the Waves, and Hold It Like A Baby(you will laugh your a.s.s. off!)

History of SB: About 13,000 years ago Native Americans called the Chumash settled this area. The Mission and El Presidio were settled in in the 1780s. They began an era of colonization and the Christianization of the native Chumash. The Spanish governed the area until 1822, when California became a Mexican territory until 1846 when Colonel John Fremont and his soldiers took Santa Barbara for the United States.

Hey man, My name is Gabriel and I´m from Brazil. I was a foreign exchange student in gering, Ne, in 2005/2006, and I´m going to visit my hostfamily in Nebraska next january(2010) and from there we´re going to colorado and NYC and then I wanna go to California, they can´t come with me so I´m going by myself.

I wanna go to san francisco and LA, but I would love to meet santa barbara and spend couple days there because I´m not used to be in real big cities, so I like a smaller one like Santa Barbara, it is much better to rent a car and meet some cool places. @mechanamer I have been living in santa barbara for 4 years now... everyone does not smoke weed, do not listen to people on youtube... sure many people do smoke it, but you almost never see anyone do it, specially not in public.. there are some hippies here, but its mostly surfers and rich people living in santa barbara, a lot of young people aswell... its my favorite city of all time, 320 days of sun every year!!!

omg i can't agree with you more, i think the same the same thing and i can't wait to leave, the only thing nice about it here are the houses which actually are pretty cool if you keep them tidy, but it pisses me off when people sugar coat it, did you know even without the tourists santa barbara has like 130,000+ people, nobody wants you to know that they all want you to only believe in its "small town charm" uuuggggghhh i hate when people say that!

Although the architecture is colonial, it does not necessarily mean it was done by spanish. Do you know who did the labor to build the California missions?

I was born in Ventura and I moved from Santa Babylon several years ago. I miss a quite a few things but it sure can get monotonous with only two seasons, fire and mud. Santa Babylon is pretty, but if you live there too long you don't see it. I remember Too many phony 'aggressively laid back' people wearing all the 'right' 'laid back gear' to look laid back. Mainly tourists from L.A. Much too expensive 100% of the time everywhere. I don't know how working people survive.

I've just finished watching a video highlighting SB's efforts at ELS for the newcomer to the US, specifically SB. But as I watched the video, this much occurred to me. Perhaps this same ELS could've forestalled many of the seemingly intractable academic difficulties many lower income African Americans are having. Said population, unfortunately, have been so marginalized that they, too, are among the immigrant population (figuratively speaking), e.g., a better understanding of English syntax and semantics; verb conjugation which would've eliminated subject/verb misalignment, enhanced cognition (I've wondered whether the African American test taker even understands the mainstream language the test is written in?). It was interesting to me, watching Wheel of Fortune, that a young student from Indiana mispronounced a word common in everyday English parlance, "Achilles." But suffice it to say that the African American, despite American birth, could so benefit from ELS. Adelante, Santa Barbara!
