Our tab didnt break off but after watching this, we seen the crack underneath.!! This video still helpful in 2023.!! **Been in contact with Dyson, replacement on way.
Thanks for this video. It helped me identify the point of breakage. Called Dyson Support. The whole body needs to be replaced. They charged me $79.50 including shipping for the new body. Should arrive in 5-6 days via UPS. The vacuum is still usable, but when emptying, I need to take it outside to the bigger trash bin as the dust flys all over due to the whole bin coming off.
Thank you for sharing this, else i keep thinking it's my bin that is broken! Anyway I just like to share that this broken part (the retaining latch/lip) can be replaced at the Dyson Service Centre. They won't be able to send you the part, but they can get it fixed under 10mins. Just call ahead 1st to let them know about the broken plastic tab and that your bin canister can't stay on while being emptied, just to make sure they have the part before you head sown. I hope this is helpful for all dyson owners. I just got mine fixed today.
Same happened to my V10 Absolute. I'm in Canada and did an online chat with Dyson. I told them a dumb little piece of plastic broke off and I needed to order a replacement part that I think is called a Bin Runner. I do have my machine registered. It is 7 months out of warranty. They are simply sending me out a replacement part - free of charge - no other questions asked. Kind of fabulous.
Lucky me... still under warranty Sending a new one. Need the whole piece! Got a very effective helpful lady on the help line within minutes. I guess that we need to be gentle with the open and close, that we do a few times to release dirt and all that hair. Thanks whoever posted this. Was so glad to understand the problem right away
Thank you for this video and for all the people who commented! I spent 1:35 minutes on the phone with Dyson yesterday (40 of those minutes were me waiting to speak to a representative - maybe COVID-related?). I told the the rep. the problem and he had no clue what I was saying. It was so frustrating. During the call, I actually noticed the broken piece from this video and said I think I found the problem. He totally dismissed it or didn't understand; I don't know which. He just kept ignoring me and asking me to try different troubleshooting steps. I kept going back to that piece. I'm thinking, "I'm no engineer, but this lines up perfectly with this, so if this is broken, there's nothing to stop the bin from sliding off...." The language barrier and him continuously talking over me prolonged this painful, completely ineffective, non-communication. It was super frustrating, and 1:35 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Final result: I'm SOL. We've had it for 2 years and 3 months. He's sending me some pieces which, frankly, I have no idea which pieces he was talking about because he lacked the ability to explain, well, anything. He said I'd need to drive to Ft. Lauderdale or Tampa for an authorized person to somehow make use of these parts; I'm speculating on this because he was so vague. Anyway, I live in Miami so, yeah, that's not happening. And really? The population of Miami-Dade County is nearly 2.8 million. You don't have any authorized Dyson folks here?? The worst thing is that I bought this in 2018 when it first came out so I paid over $700 for it. Lesson learned.
Ouch! I hate when that happens. Call back first minute they are open and insist on a manager or US based rep. Tell them to send you a new unit because it's defective. Send them video. If they won't replace tell them to send those body parts. It will be easy to rebuild. I actually have thought about building a metal tab to rivet on. Gl
Same happened to me. I bought the genuine replacement part online for $18. Now I’m researching how to best install. Funny thing though - I stopped in one of their retail locations last week, and the customer service was fantastic, and when I asked about how and where my V10 broke the lady said, “Oh, YOU did that?” while wincing at me with sympathy. Clearly, they know of this design flaw, and I’m sure have coached their staff in how to address it I.e. “you are being too forceful on the vacuum” or something to that tune. For me it’s not a big issue because it did last about a year and half and the part is easily found online for cheap. Great vacuum.
Cool, thanks for that info. A few folks were wondering including myself. I did not realize it could be found easily online, good to know. Yes, you bet they know it's a flaw, I imagine they designed it out of the 11 but I don't know yet. I like this vac alot too. Tc
I had this problem as well. It's definitely a design flaw. There should be more material in that area to stop the red release lever, not just a simple tab. After a five minute live chat with Dyson they said this problem is not common and shouldn't have happened so they are sending me a the main body to replace it. Basically it's the vacuum minus the battery, filter and dust bin. They said I don't need to send back the failed part. I too like to slide the bin back and forth when emptying the dirt to get all the hair out, but now I realize that was putting a lot of stress on that plastic tab.
Thanks Wet Life Sports! I was vacuuming today and mine broke. Was looking all over the Internet for a solution and ran across your video. A bit concerned they won’t replace mine though. Hopefully I have the same luck. My warranty is good till 6-20-20 so I hope they replace mine as well. I agree with you, why wouldn’t they just send the small piece. It should be metal instead of plastic.
me tooo!! Same issue. So I bought mine from BEST BUY without a warranty cause vacumn already very costly and I knew I had manufactorers. Then after 3 months of glory, as it truly vacumns like a dream, the cannister lid detached and I couldnt fix it after a couple times of re-attaching it. I bring it into Best Buy, the whole vacumn all boxed up in the OG box I had saved, they say no, take it to Dyson company, etc.. So I get ahold of Dyson via chat on my phone, the guy sets it up to send a new cannister to me, I was not asked to send my broken one and it only took minutes of chatting via text ponline. Sadly the order never came after 10 days so I called back, the order had been inadvertently canceled ??? so strange. The guy assiting me via phone is 100% helpful but Dyson will not escalate a faster shipment. I waited another 8 days for piece to arrive ( ended up purchasing two more from Best Buy so I coulds vacumn my home and retujrned them both to Best Buy ) . Now I have my old Dyson back and after 3 days , new cannister and I am typing this as the lid/ cannister just crashed again.. Aghhh. Now you tell me that isnt a design flaw. Yeah, I may be forceful, but I have to to get the cannister open. And come on, most people wouldnt call measly me "forceful". Now I am kinda angry because at this rate If I do not get a refund I will be pissed. Frankly the vacumn needs a little re-draw or something or else lower the price from 320 down to 120. That was a ton of money to drop for a vacumn and I waited several years and until I was 44 to finally buy this magical machine.. Damn it.
I hear ya!! Mr Dyson needs to address this head on and retool that part and send it out asap when we ask. Just get on the phone with Dyson and have them send you the whole new vac and ask for 2 or 3 of those replacement parts to be included with directions to install. I'm surprised best buy did not help. Good luck, you'll get it.
Thanks for vid - just had same issue. Lasted 2.5yrs in my case, with a lot of slamming back/forth as you mention. Per Dyson, requires new main unit, though I saw the £3 alternate part listed in another comment. Pretty disappointing design flaw. In Dyson's favour, I'm 6 months out of 2 year warranty, but they cut me a 20% break on the replacement head/filter/etc they are sending, which was already surprisingly cheap (~$150CAD) considering it's the core piece of the unit - motor, battery, filter housing, etc. No RMA or core charge for the old / broken unit (which still "works", just lets the bin fly off when emptying).
Thats good, I hear there is a replacement part for that plastic part. Maybe you can get the broken one fixed. Still seems like they should have a fix at no cost seeing as it's a very weak point. GL
Thanks for the video! I guess I'll have to exercise the warranty. One model later and Dyson still has yet to solve this flaw with the V11 line, it's kinda hilarious when you think about it.
Your welcome, I don't get it either, a company with so many resources and engineers can have such a simple weak point... I see it so often in so many products seems odd.
I just fixed mine by fabricating a small metal tab just as you mentioned. I have a bin full of small parts from various projects and formed a very small metal tab which I trimmed with my Dremel tool. I attached with a tiny screw and finished off with JB Weld. Took some work to get it just right to match the close tolerances. Works great, and because it is metal it won’t break like the thin plastic original tab. Definitely a design flaw!
I have a V8 very similar issue. There's a red release button on the main body. Mine had broken twice now. after I had to replaced the first time, it broke within a few months.
Just happened to me tonight and within minutes I found your video. Going to have to start the process of getting it fixed or replaced Monday. It looks like the part everyone's talking about is NOT a "legitimate" Dyson part, at least according to Dyson's website. All the sellers are 3rd party and I feel nervous trying to order one of those parts in case it voids my warranty. I feel like this could be prevented by designing some sort of robber stopper on that edge, perhaps it could be designed in such a way that anyone can add it to their machine at home. I always slide the cannister tab back and forth to shake out the dirt fully, so the fact the machine can't handle what it was DESIGNED for is astounding to me, especially how this thing is so expensive. We got it as a wedding gift too so it's a huge bummer; we normally wouldn't be able to afford one of these!
Same issue for me. Got an extended warranty but I suspect they may try to wriggle out of it but saying it's wear and tear. At least now I can quote this video and show them I'm not the only one. Thank you.
Same problem here. I managed to fix /upgrade the tab by drilling a very small hole through the plastic up through where the tab was located. Then I took a very small screw and hand drove it through to get the hole ready. Then I measured the length I'd need the screw to be to stop the bin without scraping or catching (same length as tab was). Then cut the screw to size. Hand drive the screw In. Connected bin and brought it forward and checked the screw catches the bin stop lever thing. Adjusted the screw in/out until it stops the bin sufficiently but also still allows enough of a gap that you can still depress the catch to remove the bin completely for cleaning. Hey presto! (just be careful not to force the bin down too hard when emptying as metal wins against plastic 😁😂
Mine broke 5 month into it too !!! For as expensive as they are this should be better . Now debating getting the v 11 but I hate that it doesn’t come with a fluffy head and I’m afraid same problem will happened plus I have had it for a year and I feel the suction not as good as when new .
Yes, silly weak point. As you can see from other comments the part seems to be available online now. Dyson gave me a while new unit, you could get one too, your still under warranty. Like all mechanical things, they have flaws and need maintenance. I get frustrated with the poorly designed things I see but then I know I've tried to build certain things and it's hard to get it perfect. But Dyson should back you up because that's good business. If you get a whole new unit then you'll get your suction back. GL
Wet Life Sports The suction loss is probably to do with the filters losing efficiency over time. They are never good again even after washing. Plus so much dust gets stuck in the cyclone area. Very poor product.
Same here, just a few months old and this tab has broken. We're a 2 dog house and have been doing a lot of renovations which makes for a lot of vacuum use overall --, but our shop vac handled all the construction stuff leaving the Dyson to just handle our usual fur plus some additional dust... nothing out of the ordinary. For this premium, expected better craftsmanship.
The same thing just happened to our Dyson V10 absolute this second...Now do tell the missus that broke the Dyson or quickly replace the part before she finds out?
Mine just broke after 8/9 months of use “V10 Animal Pro.” The issue was the Bin, the grey plastic part you point out continuously in this video I don’t believe is the design flaw. I believe it’s the clear plastic “clip” on the bin itself. Mine is about to break off, so the door isn’t completely sealing. I ordered a new Bin off Dyson’s website the part was $29, however with Tax and shipping it’s $42.
This "tab" issue you speak of, could this be the root of the problem when encountering "difficult to remove" panties that have stubbornly decided to not fall to the floor when being tugged upon.
Realised mine had snapped off today, after 9 months. However, just called Dyson as its still under warranty and they're sending me a whole new body for free.
Well, well, well, this is clear to me now. I'm a 58 year old lady who loves her Dyson, but not when the dust bin it flies into the garbage can. I see now the little broken area where some tiny piece of plastic used to be. Dammit. I have a two year old V11.
A whole new vacuum? Or a new piece? (Tongue in cheek) You can only ask, right? I'll have at it tomorrow morning when my pissed off brain is tempered by my polite but yes I'm choked brain. Don't email while angry.
Can you update the end of this video to include what the tab should look like? Most of the people watching this video are probably missing the tab :). I'm kind of thinking a 3D printed block that is epoxied on might work fine, and save me the trouble of fighting with their customer service! Thanks for the video!
Same thing happened to me also. You aren’t the only one! Why the heck would they design something so brittle when it’s literally being slammed into 5+x to empty it. And I’d they made it easier to open it wouldn’t slam into it
FYI Folks, that part is available on Amazon for some of the bins, see my link in description. Also try Ebay for different length bins. Its and easy fix and the part is about $25. Just make sure you get the right length for your bin.
@@wetlifesports For the lack of having super glue on hand I opted for drilling a hole and inserting a screw from the underside to make a stop. After adjusting the depth it worked fine. I then passed it to the main operator (Wife) who then tested it and was very happy so see we had a win.
CONCLUSION: Dyson was very helpful and wound up sending me an entire new unit. I had to send back the broken one and they sent a new one right away. I don't think they actually improved the design so I will need to be careful not to break it again. But sliding it back and fourth a bunch of times really helps get the dirt and hairs out. Beats using your hand...
@@rtcivic no, I got new unit for free. Call them and say you need the part. They will send you a new unit and if they don't, tell them to send that part, and tell them you need tech help to install it. I think it's easy to install and they owe you for that design flaw. The part cost them about 3 cents.
@@wetlifesports is the tab connected to the whole vacuum itself or the whole plastic tab part is removal? Love the vacuum but this design flaw just sucks. Broke after a year though. Cheers.
Thanks for this video and for the update! Our 4 month old Dyson is V10 has suffered the same issue and now I see, the same broken piece. I've been trying to figure out the issue with the bin and have watched so many cleaning videos but nothing had helped until I found this. Hopefully tomorrow I can get a warranty replacement started. Thanks again!
I also got a replacement vacuum for this issue. Now the new one has a latch that sticks and the bin won’t open at all. Luckily I have two bins, but really!! I’m guessing they won’t replace it twice and they did not fix the flaw. Love the vacuum otherwise.
Same happened to ours after 1.5years, definitely a design flaw that should be recalled and replaced with an improved piece. Sneaky money grabbing James Dyson at it again! Won't be buying Dyson ever again
Here in the UK I work with a Dyson rep. It happened to all his display machines. It’s a very poor design. I don’t know of any Dyson vacuum that is robust. My Dyson V8 is 3 years old and has so many cracks in the main handheld unit. I’ve tried gluing many areas of it.
Same thing just happened mine. The plastics engineering on this thing is pretty poor. The flange below the trigger snapped on mine after less than a year. Very similar design flaw to the bin stop flange.
Mine just failed in the exact spot, started to sound weird when I started it but when came time to empty the bin it fell straight out and cracked at the same spot as yours. What options are available to fix?
Yes, not sure why they don't improve on it and or have a warning label that says don't slam to knock out dust.. I've been slamming on the backstroke more so that I don't bust my tab again.
I called Dyson and received a replacement part no problem. It’s called a Big Bin Runner. I came here hoping to find instructions on how to replace the part, does anyone know how to get the old part off and the new part on? It doesn’t come with any instructions at all. Hopefully someone on this thread knows!?Thanks
Thank you!! My V10 Animal started doing this the other day and I was looking and looking at what could be causing it to no avail. Watched this and sure as sh*t that tiny piece of plastic has broken off. Would never seen it if it wasn't for your video. Thank you. Now to contact Dyson and see how good their customer support is I guess. Fingers crossed.
This just happened to mine... 2 months out of warranty... The retaining piece of plastic broke off so the bin now falls off when emptied and now the clip that holds the lid closed also broke off. Had a Whatsapp chat with Dyson and they want to charge me £85.00 for a replacement main unit (which is out of stock) and £42.00 for a replacement bin.... £127.00 to fix a major design flaw; that will 100% fail again in the future - NO THANKS! I guess I'll be going to a competitor that actually stands by their products and offers more than a poxy 2 year warranty on a £500+ item.
Yes, that is very annoying. I would hit them up a little harder, mention the videos of the flaw, send links. Tell them they need to send the cheap plastic part to you for free. It's an easy fix with the part. Ask for a manager. I think you can get them to do it for free. It's not right, they are too expensive for this bs. I just got a brand new motor body because mine was hesitating after they sent me a new battery. All just under warranty by a few days. Remind them that the unit failed while still under warranty. It often hard to reach them. They said they were shipping mine when it was back in stock in 2 weeks. A month later I still did not have it so i had to baddger them. They had stock and finally sent it. Pressure!!! You paid alot, you need a working vac!!
If you are still within the 2-yr warranty period, contact Dyson via Chat. Send this youtube link as your reference video. I have the same problem and the rep sent me a new main body.
Yes, that's what I did too. Now I have to be super careful since I'm now out of warranty. I will repair mine with a metal tab riveted on next time and make a video showing how. GL
Yes, bad design because you need to keep using that slide to get dirt/hairs out. Call Juliette at Dyson 855-533-1098. She hooked me up with a new machine. She said replacing that plastic body was too much work for us consumers. I see a seam and thought that that small section would just snap off. It definitely has some hidden way of snapping on an off, I would think Dyson would tell us how and simply send that small section, I figure they make that part for .03 cents. Good luck.
If it don't break, you won't want to upgrade to the newer Dyson vacuum Like I have a hp office jet printer, it have a 5mm width belt to drive the paper feeder/print head cover... And after few 10k print, it will fail...
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y3YZP6M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 this is for the large bin v10. Agree with the video poster though, call Dyson, this is THEIR defect and they clearly know about it. Worth a shot to call it.
We've had ours about a year, that tab finally broke, I called Dyson and she said they dont offer that bin runner that Amazon has, but they'd replace the whole main body, but right now that part is out of stock till Oct 12. So at least they're offering a fix for it.
I don’t care about warranty, I’d be happy to purchase the damn part, but you can’t even do that. I’m over Dyson, this is my second Dyson and it will be my last. 100% guaranteed...
Update to mine; we just had one of the easiest customer service conversations I've ever had. Bad news: This is an obvious design flaw so your device will very likely break in this way. Good news: They clearly know about it and instantly send a replacement if you're still in warranty.
Exact same thing. There are 2 small screws by the handle but still a twat to get off. No luck yet. Very expensive cleaners, very very cheap parts....mr dyson rolls around in nice cars due to the inferior parts. I tell ya, you cant beat a henry for the heavy stuff, and a shark for day to day stuff. these cleaners are more for a odd cobweb here and there and even the horrid little buggers that make the webs. I've had 2 Dyson's and had nothing but problems. I'll never buy one again
Turns out you have to remove the whole back unit (where the filter attaches) to access a third screw in the base unit by the handle. This will allow the slide to come off. £15 on ebay as a genuine part. One is one order and hopefully will save me launching the thing throw the wall.
They are definitely not perfect.. yes, they need careful cleaning from time to time. We need to be careful not to slam slide it to knock dust out or tab will bust off. Then we need to wash filter carefully and let completely dry. Same with bin. Take bin off and wash and also throughly allow to dry. Any wet and you will make mud that will do the clogging which sounds like what you have. Just clean again and let dry a few days. Some times i even hit it with compressed air with the garage compressor to clean. Just becareful not to tear the light rubber seals. Good luck.
