The reason I started this project is that I noticed that frequently, households have reticulation controllers installed that cost up to $300 plus and are packed with features, which is fine if you need them, but most people don't.
So over the past year and a bit, I have been working on this project, testing and trying and this is the result, a simple easy-to-use controller, that connects to Home Assistant using ESPhome, it will be a good basis for future improvement, and additional uses, including stand-alone features no WIFI required using the MAX31328 and MAX31329 real-time clocks.
For additional applications and uses please subscribe to follow along.

Always good to see Australian content on home automation. Direct from a sparky (electrician). 👍

Love your work Jim. As a future enhancement you could even add a Nextion or WT32 touchscreen on the box for local control & status.

I have thought about it, only I real want to try and keep it simple, but you could certainly use an OLED I2C screen, that is why I have 3 input I was thinking up/down/enter to change the run time and start time.

@@SparkyJames Yes that's pretty much what I was thinking. I don't have a need for it right at the moment but have no doubt this project is perfect for many out there.

I'd love to invite you over for a coffee or beer and a training session on home assistant. Have a house full of Shelly devices after watching your video. Bought a raspberry pi to set up home assistant but it's been gathering dust for a year.

Nice work. I also made one of these with ESP. Have you had any luck automating this based on local rain fall to prevent un necessary watering if it has rained or due to rain?
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 2 года назад
Yes, I used the local weather rainfall since 9am in home assistant as a condition of starting the program, the problem is working out your threshold and watering as it is actually raining but because the weather reports the rain, it requires a bit of tuning and testing before I can share that as well

ohhh. I smell another project. I set myself up with a Hunter 8 station system a few years ago before I discovered Home Assistant. Stumbling across this today. Few questions - I don't have a master valve - any issues with using all four as general stations? And how would you wire two of your units together in parallel with the existing 8 station Hunter? Setting up as a replacement looks so easy - and I'm sure in parallel wouldn't be too much harder - but is a retrofit worth a separate video? Cheers for your content.

Hi Mansell, lots of good questions, if you don't have a master then you can have 5 stations. The Retro fit video will be next weekend and the following weekend how to use it to keep a pool level topped up. It would probably be better to use an I2c port expander and 3 triacs, if you like DIY electronics, it wouldn't be too hard, there will very soon be a plug-and-play expansion board to add a few stations though, using the JST port on the board.

Awesome work Jimmy, what power supply do you recommend if I want to run this and 2x Pope 25mm Solenoid Valve With Flow Control from bunnings.
@SparkyJames
@SparkyJames 2 года назад
The supply I have been using is a 800mA 24vac which is fairly standard, that lets you run 2 valves at once no problems, you could use a bigger one if you wanted but that’s all you need

Great, thanks for your support, I'm just getting them ready to ship out to you asap, would you like a RTC module as well? I've got a few DS3231 modules left over that I'm sending to anyone that might be interested in playing with them.

@daveblanch476 2 года назад
@@SparkyJames Hi Jimmy sorry for the late reply, I have a few ESPHome devices already so the DS3231 was tempting, I still need to order an ftdi adapter so went with the plug and play ESP8285 option.

Thanks Jimmy, they arrived today and look very neat. I will pickup a power supply in the weekend to give them a try.
