Let's face it. The natural end of Southgate's cycle was the defeat to France in the World Cup. He had a chance to finally prove he could outwit a top nation and he failed. Now the only major positive of Southgate's reign (players not being burdened by fear) is over, so what is the point in him anymore? He has seemingly learned nothing tactically in his tenure
I think he’ll resign, rather than be fired. I’d give the job to Klopp. He’s tactically astute, good motivator, lived in England for years. At least with him, we won’t die wonder if they team could have won with a better coach.

As a neutral viewer the 2 England games were amongst the 4 worst games of the tournament. You'll literally never see an England performance like yesterday's Belgium for example, they never stopped attacking no matter the score and no matter how many goals they get disallowed.
England played alright against france in the last world cup tbf. That was when Southgate seemed to take the handbrake off a bit as his job was on the line but now he's just continued like nothing happened. I think this is partially the result of Southgate knowing no matter what happens, excuses will continue to be made to keep him in place, by the pundits, by the FA, by the non-performance side of the institution of english football who want a media-training, brand-friendly manager and are only concerned with optics.
@@ecaeas4439 Great point. He rolled the dice and lost in the France game, so probably puts that down to not being defensive enough. So he's reverted to type since and the result is what we've seen in the last 3 games. Instead, what he should have done is looked at the stats and the opposition and realised we played well and just lost to a better team. Someone has to win. I love Mark but sometimes he seems to forget there are other good teams in the tournament.

it was one of them games that could have finished 0-0, 5-0 to either team, 4-2, literally it could have finished in any score line possible and it would have felt deserved for the winner. it was a great great game to watch.
They are compact, that team is a small pool, the lads have been playing since 14 15 without any change, well coached, less pressure, each player knows each others moves, England are still going with walker and tripper when in reality Trent should have built himself up to comfort in that position, look at ghehi, mguire who, Trent should be doing a Liverpool like he does every 3 days for Liverpool 😊

Trippier at left is definitely not working and I don’t know why Southgate is doing that but the fact there are so many more options shows how bad Southgate is. He could put colwill, who left footed and has played as a defensive full back for Chelsea so then we can maybe play stones going’s I not midfield next to rice or even play Trent for walker as an attacking right back, both of those sound better than trippier as a left wingback

Fans don't help overrating the squad each tournament when realistically we've only got 5/6 players that come under the "world class" bracket, then also got a squad of largely mediocre players to below average players, as well as a poor manager.

Win next game which reinforces the previous. Lots of Z-listers start posting on social that it is coming home. Get beat in next game because of some form of stupidity on coaching or playing side. Rinse and repeat for every tournament. The only people who don't realise this are the English.

Southgate would rather draw every match provided that offers more safety than pushing the boat out and potentially losing. Wiegman doesn't make excuses when the team don't perform and she fixes what goes wrong. Southgate's response to every failure is "Well obviously we didn't play well enough and we'll need to take that into the next game", but this NEVER happens.
Everything you said here was spot on but specifically that point about how we glorify failure. A good example of that is Southgate getting an OBE for getting to a semi final, some countries don’t give the equivalent of that for winning
The overhyping all started in 1990 when we celebrated a semifinal loss with an open bus tour. Should have just kept quiet and just aimed to do better. Can't see us getting past the next round. Even starting to hope the jocks get through !
