Welcome!
This episode is about restoring the Mini clutch master cylinder.
After cleaning and polishing, the seals, spring and plunger were replaced.
There was also some noticeable wear where the clevis pin is attached to. This slack could be felt when pushing in the clutch pedal.
Feel free to leave a comment!
Kind Regards
RAC

New subscriber here. Wonderful videos I really like the restorations that you are doing. Please keep them coming, you are going really nice work. I will begin restoring my 79 mini later this spring ( really cold here in Canada,garage not heated) and I can use all the help I can get. Thank you, your videos will make my voyage into the mini world easier for sure.

Hi @Daniel Cote, thanks for subscribing and the kind words! What really helps for me is the Haynes manual and exploded views of parts, and I also use RU-vid :D Glad I'm able to help :) Have fun with the restoration of your Mini (when it's a little bit warmer there)!!

Thanks! Nice video as always ;) That job is also on my list of thousand of things to do before driving my mini again... Just completed the stripping down. Body work comes first...

Nice job defo like the finish at the end, myself I would be a bit concerned about the petrol. As i used to be petrol deliverer and aluminium oxide in side could be very risky. But good for you looks great ❤

Petrol really is a no no. Use white spirit or paraffin. Really good restoration though.

Thanks! Oh I didn't know, always cleaned parts with petrol before 😅 Is it because it leaves a layer of "greasy" stuff on it?

Excellent video. But according to the note inside the seal kit the thicker seal (Main) goes nearest to the spring and the other thinner seal (Secondary) goes towards the plunger.

I'd make sure that the bore itself is not too pitted before going to all this trouble

How would you go about it without the ultrasonic cleaner ? I’m wanting to try restore mine before spending all the money on a new one but don’t have an ultrasonic cleaner 🙏

Nah. This is a component that needs to be replaced if in this condition.

i would love to have a 2nd mini for spare parts and start doing this to make the main one better and nicer while keeping it on the road

You could restore some parts while keeping it driving :) That was also the plan for my Mini, but when it broke down, I decided to do a full restoration. I do miss driving the Mini 😅

@@restoringaclassic9489 I still don't have one. But I hope this year will be the one when I can go and get one.

@Frans Kamstra Oh okay 😋 Are there a lot of Mini's available in your country for spare parts? Here (in Belgium) you can occasionally find one for a decent price, but it seems like there are less available than a year a go or so.

@@restoringaclassic9489 I'm from the Netherlands, so we're are fishing in the same pond. I'm looking at a 3000 to 6000 mini. I dont want a perfect one as I want to have a nice hobby. Small rust patches are not the problem. And I want to do a big body restoration in a few years and make it dutch orange. But just like you i want to make the engine bay absolutely awesome.

@Frans Kamstra You're a neighbour then 😋 Should be possible to find one within that price range. I've bought mine for 3400 euros. Not too rusty, but enough to keep me busy 😅 Feel free to send some pics when it's painted in dutch orange!

Nice work Sir! Can you tell us how/what you used to access that cotter pin on the clutch fork pin to remove it from the car? Also, did you do anything to the cylinder bore like honing it to make sure it was perfectly smooth?
@restoringaclassic9489
@restoringaclassic9489 2 года назад
Thank you @TornadeCAN99! If I still remember correctly, i've first cut the "legs" of the cotter pin with some cutter pliers, or by wiggling, so they break off. Then I've rotated the the clevis pin, so the cotter pin could be pulled out with some long nose pliers. It a bit of a fiddly job and not that comfortable 😅 And I didn't hone the cylinder bore, as I don't want to enlarge it. The cylinder bore was pretty good after a clean, some little marks where the oil enters the cylinder from the reservoir, but it should be fine.

I had the same question about the bore - something I am about to grapple with!

Its too late, but NEVER use granulated media on the inside of a brake master cylinder. one missed grain, and you have no brakes. you should only used chemicals on those.

Hi, thanks for the tip, didn't know that 😅 But I will replace it anyway with a new one :)
