Clearly one of those nights where the entire band is on fire. Every single note and beat counts. I think this maybe one of EC’s top 10 concerts in his career. Anybody agrees?
I agree. Not sure where and when this performance was. Might anyone know? He did a version of Layla with this same band and Stratocaster, but I can't seem to find it now.
Put these guys together and they could be phenomenal with a bunch of rocks. Clapton is just the greatest, but you have Nathan East just killing that Bass, Steve Gadd on Drums, and anytime you have Billy Preston on that Hammond, you're goin to Church. The amount of talent on that Stage is thru the roof ✌️
it seems impossible that you would be watching a video with Eric Clapton playing guitar and the drummer steals the show. I guess that is what you get when you have Steve Gadd on drums.
Hmmm....a couple of other guys Clapton played with weren't half bad either. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, perhaps that's why they called themselves The Cream.
@@briankorbelik2873 I don't think anyone disagrees with you, but this band has a wall of sound quality to it. Steve Gadd is just an otherworldly drummer. The guy everyone would talk about if Rush never existed.
@@robinblackmoor8732 I'm a Rush fan and I agree with this message. Neil Peart on Mr Gadd "I've tried to point out to people, a simple thing in the hands of a master is... you know, when you hear Steve Gadd play a simple rhythm, you could not write that down"
@@sodoberman Ringo Starr got a lot of criticism for his simplistic drumming. The thing his he could hold a steady beat throughout an entire song and a whole show. That is hard to do. You can measure Ringo's playing and he has perfect time. Gadd does that too, but then he goes off into that Godlike drumming that Neil Peart is famous for. Drumming is no where near as easy as men like this make it look. I can play a bit of guitar and bass. I could not play drums well to save my life.
Andy Fairweather-Low, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Billy Preston, Greg Phillinganes, and David Sancious. Gee, Clapton thought he'd put a band together and do some gigs.Just call a few mates and book some rehearsal time. Oh jumpin' jesus! To have been a fly on the wall! This is stellar.
@giri kotte Mate, not in any way trying to start a fight, but i think i misunderstood you (probably 'cause my bad english). By saying " He isn't nearly as great a guitarist or a musician" did you mean Clapton is not a great guitarist/musician?
Very underrated song love it lyrics spot on , George done this with Eric , ringo walks by says about the swans they live in the park what agigle just like that 😜
@@rickmajdowski5264 Yeah, no kidding. One of the best guitar players ever and Steve Gadd just steals the show. It does not seem possible, and all the other musicians are fantastic too, but the drumming is other worldly. I am not sure most people get that. Drummers hear it, but not sure if others get it.
This is perhaps the finest live version I have ever heard. Several of the songs in this concert are the finest versions I have ever heard. What a band.
Great riff, for sure, but there is no most iconic, what about Smoke on the Water, whole lotta love, All right now, Layla, then of course there is Stairway. How about any Fab Four riff? Or perhaps for something a little different Bittersweet Symphony, or the drum opening riff to Rock n Roll. Theres just do many phenomenal pieces of music out there. Heres one you'd never think of, but go listen, The Blue Danube Waltz. Just enjoy without comparing
How old is your daughter? If she's 12, that's cool to confuse Steve Gadd with George Clooney. On the other hand, if your daughter is 52, the drummer is the least of her problems! 🤣😂🤣
Andy Fairweather-Low, Steve Gadd, Nathan East, Billy Preston, Greg Phillinganes, and David Sancious..… and last but not least Eric Clapton….what can I say? Absolutely amazing. Chapeau Maestri
@@maxbernuzzi7390 Yes, there is no question that player for player this is the finest band Clapton has ever assembled. And don't forget the 2 female vocalists. The one who sings that beautiful aria part during Wonderful Tonight is just stunning.
Nathan east is a SUPERB Bass player - I saw him many times behind Eric, and he was ALWAYS brilliant. But, Jack Bruce was one of the GREATEST and most ground-breaking bass players of all time. Such a tragedy that he and Ginger Baker hated each other quite so profoundly.
I have to admit, i feel that all of Claptons classic songs sound just so much better in recent live versions compared to the original studio versions. I never liked Badge that much but I heard from many that it was good so I gave it another try with this. Love it!
It was actually taken by Eric Clapton from George at George’s house, Eric thought the paper said “badge” but George’s sloppy hand writing said “bridge” he had written the music labeling where the bridge was, Eric thought the song name was badge, and Eric helped write the lyrics.
@@joeamato3234 I have read that it was Eric's backyard. Yes, Clapton was also reading "bridge" upside down which made Harrison laugh. In later version Eric closes the tune with "where is my Badge" ?
Steve Gadd is one of, if not the, best rock drummers of his generation. (It's mine too😎) I do miss the long hair of our youth. At least I still have mine.
I like the keyboardist also. I’m not sure why, but this has always been a favourite song of mine. I guess the lyrics don’t make much sense. But it’s still my favourite. I never knew the title til I bought a whole box set…just to get #BellBottomBlues🎶😂🛍 Happy holidays 🎄
No, it was played too fast. Every live version of him playing it is usually too fast. It’s like he’s sick of playing it and wants to get it behind him.
Agreed. Mastery level achieved with Billy Preston on Hammond B3, Steve Gadd on drums, David Sancious on various keyboards, Nathan East on bass and backing vocals, Andy Fairweather-Low, second guitar and backing vocals? Holy moly.
Nobody could play long melodious riffs like Eric. He is the best by far. On the other had Jimi Hendrix would come up with quick bursts of lead and he had tremendous showmanship whereas Eric stood in one place and from there he blew the universe. Clapton is God. The closest he came to the cross is Crossroads.
@@krissgennrich8988 Prolific session drummer. He's played with everyone from Paul Simon to Chick Correa to Kenny Loggins. Plus he's from my hometown of Rochester, NY.
OMG! This is still so relevant to today. I'm in my 60's and this still brings me back to feeling like I'm 16 with a whole lot of more life experience and wisdom. Full life cycle with completion. . .
Thanks Eric and his band. This is the best version of this song I have ever listened. Drums on every ( x 2N x 4N) makes this song fascinating. All solos are great and really delightful. Even Eric smile on Keyboard solo showing his satisfaction.
I never knew this video existed, after all these years, just the audio.. seeing this blows my mind! Absolutely the Best reworking of a Cream classic right here.. and that gorgeously thematic keys solo at the end! wow
Ditto. A good night to hear this and celebrate the end of a sad era and the beginning of what I hope will be . . . well, you get the picture, no need to go there. Just hope that the vaccine is around the corner for real . . . and we can return to seeing friends for real and remember these wonderful times of our lives. Thanks Steve.
@@joelwerth528 that outro synth solo! I'm blown away every time I hear it. you can see Claptons look of approval, with Steve Gadd just laying behind the beat.. just brilliant..
Half a century later this songs sounds as fresh as it did in '69. That is what you call legs. What a fantastic production. Wish we all could have been there. Warner Brothers are a couple fortunate dudes. Thanks for sharing, now free up the embedded, boys....;~}}}
Man think of all the classic songs and groups Clapton has done and been a part of ? It`s staggering. Since the mid 60`s he has been writing and performing and played with the best musicians of all time. All for the love of the blues. This song is one of his best beautiful chord structure and great melody. God Bless you E.C. and please keep on playing man. Glenn Augustyn
I wish George was still alive so that he and Eric could play this live again:( They we're so great together, George & Eric will be the greatest Rock Stars of all Time!!!!!
This song never gets old. I absolutely love this version. The sound is amazing, the bass lines are awesome, the solos are killer. It's literally perfect.
Thinkin' 'bout the times you drove in my car Thinkin' that I might have drove you too far And I'm thinkin' 'bout the love that you laid on my table I told you not to wander 'round in the dark I told you 'bout the swans, that they live in the park Then I told you 'bout our kid, now he's married to Mabel Yes, I told you that the light goes up and down Don't you notice how the wheel goes 'round? And you better pick yourself up from the ground Before they bring the curtain down Yes, before they bring the curtain down Talkin' 'bout a girl that looks quite like you She didn't have the time to wait in the queue She cried away her life since she fell out the cradle Where is my badge? Where is my badge? Where is my badge? Where is my badge?
When I worked at a Bose store, I would use this song at these time stamps to demo the systems' capabilities at extreme loud and quiet volumes, how the quality stayed the same. Great song, great tour, great performers!
This guy on the drums Is the absolute best with seemingly Little effort! Just fantastic as Is All of them. Clapton, the best, stands to reason, surrounds himself with the best
@@SG13232 yes and so sorry to Mr. Gadd for forgetting his name because really I think Eric could not have chosen a Better drummer And musical personality as Mr. Gadd to be part of "the show"! He really does impress me sooooo much!
This one give me the chills... i makes me feel how huge they all are as musicians.. feeling the voids with splendid music... that really is high quality...
