Finally a video on the M5! Would you perhaps know how to get a closed iris unstuck? Playback works but it doesn't "see anything"...
@Elecami
@Elecami 6 месяцев назад
You would have to take the lens assembly apart and give the iris a poke to free it. Be sure that is the actual problem first. Quite likely to see capacitors gone bad in the power supply on these cameras. That could prevent the camera from working while other parts still function. You could judge the power supply performance by looking for distortion on the view finder while the tape is entering play mode. The power load or the loading motor will sag the power supply if the capacitors are bad.

very nice teardown, lots of boards an moving parts

Thanks. I am thinking about a part 2 trying to get the mechanism to work better.

I recently acquired one of these for rather cheap, it switches on but when I look into the viewfinder it’s just white with loads of jumpy lines, do you know what this could be?…plays back video fine thought so I know it’s not the CRT. Also struggling to get it to connect to tv, if you have any tips, that would be great!
@Elecami

The usual problem with these is that the power supply capacitors have gone bad. This can be seen as camera not working or picture very distorted, lines on the screen / Viewfinder when the tape is loading and unloading. That would be the first thing I would check / replace.

I have been looking for one of those for a teardown video for many years now. I think it would also be a neat project to make a usable mini display with the viewfinder crt
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
I think it would be better to get the view finder from a professional video camera. The tube is larger much more interesting. Like seen here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zdK2e87bc5s.html The consumer cameras have very tiny CRTs.

Pulled the family NV M5 out of storage and have been giving it a go - the camera doesn't seem to expose properly with inside lighting, and the backlight button doesn't work - is there a simple solution to this?
@Elecami
@Elecami 2 месяца назад
Not sure it depends on the specific cause of the issue. These camera will need a lot more light than modern cameras. Does it work ok in daylight / outdoor? Likely the power supply circuits are going bad from work out capacitors. That is a common issue with these.
@lethalwithalens
@lethalwithalens 2 месяца назад
@@Elecami works okay under daylight and full power studio LED lighting, certainly not bright though! I might just be unsure what to expect! Sounds like the external power supply needs the capacitors changed? PS thankyou very much for the response!
@Elecami

@@lethalwithalens Power supply circuits in the camera. If you see lines in the view finder or distortions on the video output when the Tape in loading up into play or record mode, that will indication power supply problems are starting.

I have Hitachi 500E full size vhs camcorder problem is when i turn on camera the red light blinking and loading motor run automatically for some seconds then camera off same things happen when my Panasonic nv-m3000 what is the case of this? I checked power supply with another unit its power supply is ok dose it main pcb problem i don't know what i check in main pcb can u please help me its really helpful because its really stressed
@Elecami

Probably is the belt on the loading motor slipping. That means the mechanism can't reset back to the stopped state and VCR goes into error state..
@KylesDigitalLab
@KylesDigitalLab Год назад
Do you have to take off the camera section to access the belts? I just purchased a PV-220D which appears to use the same chassis/design, expect it uses a Newvicon tube instead of a CCD. I've also read that these have capacitor issues, is that true? The one I bought was manufactured in February 1986, and it looks like the capacitors are though hole so it shouldn't really be a problem I think. I ended up just scrapping the parts off of my PV-200D since I couldn't figure out the problem with the tape mechanism.
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
I think you will need to take the camera part off to access the belts, especially the tube type since it has a big board that covers the mechanism. Capacitors can be a problem in the power supply. Because it is a switching power supply, that is hard on capacitors due to high ripple current.
@KylesDigitalLab

@@Elecami I just got my PV-220D, the camera section works but I believe the capstan belt is bad as it is squeaking. I can get it to play a pre-recorded tape and I've managed to make a recording but since I have a replacement belt I will replace it.
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
@@KylesDigitalLab Sounds good. I am not sure if the belt would be the cause of squeaking though.
@KylesDigitalLab
@KylesDigitalLab Год назад
@@Elecami I got the belt replaced and it's fixed now, but I broke the metal piece for the "cursor" which is that sliding part that engages the switch on the operation PCB between VTR and camera mode. Everything else is intact so I'm wondering if it's possible to do anything to make it engage with the switch again. Like using epoxy or soldering metal tabs to the remaining piece of metal. If you have any ideas please let me know because it's perfectly functional and working now.
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
@@KylesDigitalLab I am not sure of the exact piece that is broken. Probably can't be soldered easily. Would depend what metal it is made form and plated with. Epoxy might be better. Probably be easier to solder in another separate external switch like a small toggle or slide switch.

My NV-M5 seems to be stuck in FFW mode when playing back and recording. I have no idea why. The buttons work OK so its not a stuck FFW button.
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
Maybe the pinch roller is bad and the take-up is pulling the tape through. OR bad serveo and capstan is running fast OR bad control telling capstan the wrong thing. Maybe capacitors have gone bad. Almost guarantee they've gone bad in the power supply circuit.

I had this same issue with my m5 (ag 160, but similar in everything) possible issue with the model fast-forwarding could be the mode switch, you may need to open the camcorder to get into the mode switch and clean the contacts with contact cleaner. I did this and now it works perfectly okay for the most part.

Out of the blue I know, do you ever sell parts from these teardowns? I'm on the lookout for a replacement rubber eyecup for the viewfinder on my M5.
@Elecami
@Elecami Год назад
Often I put it all back together and put it back in my collection. Not always. I don't often sell things because I can't be bothered with hassle of shipping especially for overseas. I think you should check first if you can buy the same of similar camera locally for spare parts.
