I sort of agree with Webbon et al that we don't have a Constitutional Republic the way that the Founders intended. Direct election of senators undid the Republic as the Founders intended. We now sort of have a Republic-Democracy hybrid, trending more toward Democracy (hence the left trying to dump the Electoral College). However, there are still a lot of features of the Republic left, and it could still be salvaged. It would take a TON of work and political will, but the clock could still be turned back. And that is where I differ very strongly from the CN people. We agree that there are problems, big ones. They seem to think the current system cannot solve the problems. I disagree vehemently and think their solution is worse than the problem.
33:00 on one hand, I wouldn’t say that I’m a Christian nationalist but I do believe you are missing key details of the Christian cultural analysis that have given rise to this kind of talk. It’s not only Webbon and co. that talk about the unsuitable nature of the constitutional order, but there are others groups who take a broader view and see the dynamics more from the perspective of someone like a Charles Taylor (such as in “A Secular Age”). On one hand, it seems like things are very much looking like a powder keg, and even more as the days go on, but on the other hand, I think of Schaeffer’s line of despair and the way he mobilized near the end of his life to try and make a difference despite odds looking grim even at that stage in history. In other words, how does a work like Schaeffer’s a “Christian Manifesto” fit into the dialogue? 1:08:52 19th amendment Nancy Pearcey takes up a cultural assessment of this topic in her new book “The Toxic War on Masculinity”. Not that she would want this overturned by say, but the cultural conditions that brought about this change, didn’t desolve after they achieved these ends, but went on to break down all distinctions of man and woman in society and lead to the breakdown of the family.
One example of a “3rd way” type of approach to understanding the cultural moment: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gI2ACE34a9Q.htmlsi=wehCE2P-l8TmXqAF
57:35 apparent vs formal maintenance That seems correct. There have been a number of landmark Supreme Court cases that have forever changed the landscape of American politics, and there is also an assumed “wax nose” posture on the part of many in society today concerning the constitution, which has given way to rapid onset societal change in place of the slow and gradual change intended by the system of checks and balances which is in place. Even if the lines he’s defining this dynamic down aren’t precise, again the social imaginary and the individual’s “self-conception” has rapidly changed sometimes in response to external cultural factors, but also often due to major shifts in legislative decisions.
@@DrBillRoach Thank you! I appreciate the content, I’m just wondering if the reactionary tendency that our culture embraces (on all sides of every issue) will in the end actually be able to resolve the issues of the day.
Hi Bill, as you know I did comment earlier but I took it it down because as I watched the video you did provide good context for the comments made, I hadn’t given you enough time and I do apologise. I don’t agree with CN but I do find that their cause is to seek to please the Lord p, as I’m sure you do too. I do find it hard though when you delve into Joseph Le Maistre and then Karl Schmidt when you cite Peterson and Lindsay, who aren’t Christians either and happily go along with homosexuality and Jordan Peterson, after warning us about total power, told everyone to get the damn vaccine. I t doesn’t come across well to be using non Christians who wear the mask when it suits them of pseudo Christianity as they speak on certain topics pertaining to Christianity or the Bible and equally lead people down the wrong path.
1 Samuel 8:7 The LORD said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them. John 19:15 So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
