just to add and maybe clarify the journalism conversation, as a journalist myself: from like a conceptual standpoint, yes paparazzi are journalists. they take photos and write on events. the real difference is that I would bet most companies that we consider paparazzi in the US are probably registered as entertainment companies rather than news organizations. (fun fact, so is Fox News. that's why it's like that.) they can use this in a legal sense to dodge accusations of slander/libel: "hey, we're just entertainment, we never said we report the facts." that's also why they say things like "reportedly" CONSTANTLY and never mention sources. it's literally gossip. "actual" journalism is held to a much higher standard as it's actually pretty easy to sue a newspaper or news station if they've reported something that isn't factual. also broadcast has a lot of rules to follow from the FCC but that's a different thing altogether. also, England has different and weird free speech laws comparatively so that might be where Jordan is coming from here. basically big news orgs that are famously reliable want to keep that reputation and have a huge spotlight on them and will absolutely get sued for libel if they slip up. local news orgs are also usually good sources because they're people right in your community... and you can usually easily fact check them since you're right around whatever they're reporting on.
@luketaylor7262
@luketaylor7262 Год назад
but also just to be clear, the idea of journalists as like Big Heroes is pretty silly. there have definitely been some huge things uncovered by journalists that have changed the course of history but like... those are famous moments for a reason: they're rare. all I know is that every college professor I've ever had has reminded students to minimize harm as much as possible in our reporting and do our best to shine a light on those in power. still, imo some of the most important work journalists do is just going to the boring government stuff and parsing out legal language for the public to better understand. super boring work with usually no big news but imagine how much worse our government would be without it.
@greensleeves98
@greensleeves98 Год назад
@@luketaylor7262 i'm also a journalist, and i was hoping someone clarified this! i think your additional comment is almost exactly what I would have said. on a personal note: it made me think of my first local beat and the meetings i sat in to hear the latest decision on the town's plastic bag ban or the addition of new stairs to the back of an old building. not always "exciting" but still some of my favorite pieces i've ever contributed.

I once had a conversation with a girl who was convinced there was nothing weird about it. "It's just fantasy," was essentially her argument, but like... no. If this dude cheated on his wife, slept with his best friend, and we all got to watch."

This is how I feel when people ship Taylor Swift with women. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being in the LGBTQ+ community but she has never expressed that she’s part of it and we live in an increasingly hostile world surrounding it. On the lower end it’s very creepy and on the higher end it could put her in actual danger with bigots. There are so many fictional characters in this world - we don’t need to publicly fantasize about real people.
@malavery5017
@malavery5017 11 месяцев назад
@@GamingintheAM0801 I agree that you shouldn’t post it where they can see it-in the case of internet personalities that means you should keep it off the internet. But i really don’t think the very act of fantasizing or theorizing about a relationship is morally wrong. if you like to imagine two influencers or actors being together, that’s you weird little thing, and that’s fine. the issue is when the people being fantasized about are exposed to material. what i have even more of an issue with isn’t really the people who write stories or weird conspiracy posts about famous people dating-it’s the people who purposefully expose the famous people to that material. anyone who tries to show actors rpf fanfic about them during like conventions or meet-ups is a freak who needs seriously consider why they are doing that. that also applies to like, media orgs that do it as a bit during interviews and stuff. it’s so unprofessional and unnecessary. RPF for massively famous people who are probably never going to see it posted in niche places is one thing-but the people purposefully finding it and showing it to people are bizarre. the original creators of that content never asked for it to be shown to the subject.

I relate a lot on the reading subject, I used to read so much as a kid! I am autistic and reading was my very first special interest, and like Jarvis a lot of the time I spent reading as a kid was Harry Potter. Now as an adult I just have such a hard time quieting my mind when I sit down to read, it's been a really big struggle because it is something I desperately want to reconnect with and throw myself into again. Every time I open a book to start reading I will read the words from 4 paragraphs, and then realize I don't remember ANY of it. The entire time I was reading it I was just thinking about the medical problems I am dealing with right now, or a conversation I had earlier that week, or what I need to get at the grocery store tomorrow or whatever else it might be. I will catch that I did that and reread the paragraphs trying to really dedicate myself to absorbing the words and painting the story in my imagination. That works for the stuff I had already read, but then I get to new paragraphs and start drifting off again. It's very frustrating and I have been trying to force myself to just engage in it again the way that I used to in hopes that things will click later down the line. I sometimes think there might be some kind of mental block because of the fact that the author of the books that got me so invested in the hobby wants me dead now, because every time I read it is hard not to connect it to my memories of Harry Potter in some ways. I'm planning on just trying to replace those memories with better fantasy authors like N.K. Jemisin, Ursula Le Guin and Terry Pratchett. I just started reading a series called Riddle-Master that is very Tolkien inspired (reluctant sweet little boy forced onto a quest of incredible gravity kind of deal) by an author named Patricia McKillip that my chiropractor gifted me and I have been enjoying it a lot even though I have to read most of the paragraphs twice.

I hope you can maybe figure out what the block could be maybe as a child you weren’t to worried or obsessed with how your days were like or what they will be like. I hope you can find out how to immerse yourself in a book. Or at the end of the day as long as you understand the information and go back in the book then that’s fine too
@wormcemetery
@wormcemetery Год назад
@@itsgrace1163 Definitely wasn't as worried or obsessive about things that weren't my special interest as a kid, feels like getting older kind of forced me to worry about the things I didn't want to engage with as a kid to some extent. I am having a hard time finding the right balance between not ignoring my needs and not obsessing over every little problem in my life. I hope I am able to find it again too, and I am feeling more confident that I will be able to every day! I am trying to accept things as they are and find the enjoyment I can in reading while trying to find my way back to the way I want it to be. I've always been a bit of a quitter when things stop giving my brain the same happy chemicals or when things start to get difficult, and it's been important for me to learn that even the things I love the most can have their ups and downs and as long as I stick it out I'll find my way back to where I want to be. Funnily enough I feel like my problems I have with eating food helped me realize this. My safe foods I rely on every day to eat just suddenly tasting disgusting to me and having to find out another way to prepare the same ingredients or another similar type of dish. It kind of feels like it's taught me how to find appreciation for things even when they stop being the experience I have come to expect.

watching the whole pokemon card craze is kinda wild. i used to buy pokemon cards from this one store and now the shelf is locked up for security and you have to ask someone to get you the cards which i bet looks insane to anyone who doesn't know

Just an aside, I’m pretty sure WotC is the only profitable section of Hasbro. So it’s lass that they’re trying to make as much profit as possible as Hasbro is trying to get them to make enough profit to support the entire company.

my elementary school had the RAH (reading at home) cart, where you got a certain amount of points from your reading at home log, and every friday they'd come by your class with a cart full of prizes. you could save your points for better stuff.

I know exactly what Jordan is talking about, at least the part how Journalism in the US is treated with reverence. Before I had to drop the semester for medical reasons, my news writing class exposed me to SO much about journalism and what journalists think. Funny enough, the best book in that class was written by a British man for a mainly British audience. He was the most concise, clear, and straight forward about news writing style compared to the American journalists. Writing for News Media by Ian Pickering- that was the book lol. The other books got all philosophical about journalism and waxed their own asses like they were poetic or something. I clearly didn’t have much patience for their writing styles 😂 But it’s interesting to me he picks up on it from an outside perspective, because before taking that class I didn’t really notice it. The UK must realllyyy not respect journalists 😂 But he’s absolutely right that many journalists will end up writing for gossip/yellow pages kinda stuff.
