School buses can have seatbelts. The hardest part is having the little kids stay in their seatbelts. I currently have 20 yrs in transportation.

I drove a school bus for 3 years while going to college full time days and nights.18 hour days were hard but I was very young out of the Navy. It is a really great part time job that can be done together WITH full time employment. my BROTHER IN LAW DID IT FOR 50+ YEARS ALONG WITH MY SISTER WHO WAS HOUSE KEEPER and Mom AT HOME ,AND MANAGER AT A SUMBHOUSE. Three perfect safety Records, and a top ten in the state school bus drivers rodeo held by the highway patrol, promoting safety and awareness of special needs in that job

@Plasmastorm73_n5evv there are seatbelts on older buses, as someone who was a kid back in the day rode them. But those are probably all out of service now. I think seatbelts should be on all buses - Even public transit. Although not sure how much of a difference it will make in certain situations. On public transit lile buses and subways where seats are not all facing the front, but some on the side, as well as facing face to face. Seatbelts could prove more harm than good. Really frustrating.

People are putting so much blame on the fact that the school bus didn't have seatbelts yet in reality the crash determined that the school bus driver was not at fault for it. Shouldn't the driver of the concrete truck be held responsible for the crash since they killed 2 people in the crash? Why are y'all solely putting blame on the school district all because the bus that was used did not have seatbelts? It would literally take about 7 billion dollars to refit every non-seatbelt-equipped school bus in the US with seatbelts. Plus, school buses with seatbelts are more expensive than buses without seatbelts, and some school districts may have budget issues, so they buy buses without seatbelts.

So..... where's the video from the cam INSIDE the bus? How exactly were the children seated? Where were the 11 adults seated? Was the boy who died on the side of impact sitting right behind the driver? Was he on the opposite side? Was he in the rear seats? Spinning 360° with just a lap belt is going to cause injury. its why auto manufacturers also have a shoulder restraint small kids under a certain height and weight are required by law to be secured in a car seat. In Missouri ,children age 4 and under must ride in the back seat, RESTRAINED in a FORWARD FACING CAR SEAT. We gonna start needing specialized "field trip" busses with provisions Pre-K kids can be strapped into their car seats for safety?

Why don't school buses have seatbelts? Large school buses are designed with “compartmentalization” in mind. They utilize protective seating and are created to distribute crash forces differently than a regular passenger vehicle. They are also designed to withstand a rollover better than your everyday car. Modern school buses are large and heavy, and their passengers sit high off the ground. This means they are remarkably safe. Each year, over 400,000 public school buses carry almost 25 million children more than 4 billion miles. Yet, fewer than 10 children die each year in school bus accidents, and studies show that seat belts would not have prevented most of those deaths. By way of comparison, about 800 children die each year while walking, biking, or riding in a passenger car to or from school. The National Safety Council concluded that school buses are 40 times safer than the average family car, making them the safest of all forms of ground transportation. School buses are designed to be safe. School bus seats have high backs and lots of cushioning. In addition, they're packed together tightly to achieve compartmentalization. In the event of a crash, the seats absorb most of the impact, protecting the children who sit in them. Not only would adding seat belts to school buses be costly, experts cannot agree on what type of seat belts should even be used. Because children tend to move around a lot, there's no guarantee they would use seat belts, if installed, or use them properly. Bus drivers certainly cannot be tasked with enforcing proper seat belt use, because their attention must remain focused on the task of driving. Given that experts believe that adding seat belts to school buses would have very little, if any, impact on safety, most states have concluded that there's simply not enough benefit to justify the cost of adding seat belts to school buses. And the cost to do so is not insignificant. Experts estimate adding seat belts to all school buses could easily cost each state over $100 million. Experts also fear that adding seat belts to school buses would reduce overall bus capacity. To the extent that fewer children can ride buses, they might be forced to seek other means of getting to and from school - means that have proven to be more dangerous than riding a school bus without seat belts.

I still don’t understand why there’re no seat belts on school buses, why can’t our government invest in this for our children?? Every state should provide this for our kids! 😢😢

Today, the United States government, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), does not require seat belts on school buses weighing over 10,000 pounds. Federal law does require seat belts on lighter buses, but the seat belt decision for larger buses is left to the states. To date, only six states (California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, and Texas) require seat belts on school buses, and some of those states only require them on newer buses.

A concrete pumper truck veered into the opposite lane side swiping the middle to rear of the bus making it spin on its side then rolled onto its top landing back on its wheels. After the pumper truck passed the bus it immediately hit the car following the bus head on removing 3/4 of the car killing the driver leaving 1/4 of the car still on the road. The pumper truck ran off the road with 3/4 of the car and landed on its side. This is my opinion from photos.
