When I was young and had tantrums my mom would take out a camera and record me so I understand how bad that feels, as a child in distress you want to be comforted not recorded. I couldn’t even imagine her putting it online for everyone to see.That would have affected my life tremendously. I can’t believe people do this. That poor girl deserves respect.

I’m a 19 year old autistic adult with many autistic family members. Personally, I see no gain to me or my community. Videos that would help the community, or family or friends of autistic people would be things like: signs of autism not commonly spoken about, stim toys or sensory toys and gifts and where to find them, communication devices, things you can use or do in public to help someone with autism (such as wearing noise cancelling headphones), baby proofing the house, etc. Showing someone who cannot say no is like posting naked baby photos on the internet to me. The only difference is those kids will grow up and can sue their parents, but can’t change or fix it. I know someone nonverbal and it breaks my heart to think that they could’ve been in this situation. It does nothing but hurt her and doesn’t educate people about autism, honestly it scares people! I may be mistaken, but I believe they also like autism speaks and are fans. You can do your own research on it, but most autistic people and those in the community dislike them and causes a lot of negative things.

“ Kids don’t have rights, what?!?!” I SPAT MY DRINK OUT. I CANNOT believe they said that. Kids ABSOLUTELY have rights that’s why we have child protective services to PROTECT children BECAUSE they have rights. I’m literally fuming. The answer to the “ leg humper “ question has NO answer because ABIGAIL CANNOT CONSENT AND WILL LIKELY NEVER CONSENT. I signed the petition. We will get justice for you sweet girl if it is the LAST thing we do ❤️ Great video as always Josh 👍

@kaseymomier1868
@kaseymomier1868 2 года назад
Yes, but we don’t know what level she is at in her learning of AAC and her developmental level for expressive receptive language. Until they have a better grasp of communication, if “no” and “stop” is not a well understood concept, as it is a difficult concept to teach those with severe receptive delay, it can actually be confusing and detrimental to progression to introduce that symbol too early into the process of learning the SGD. Of course you want to actively work on teaching the concept as a whole, and hopefully working on other ways to help learn how to advocate and communicate for themselves what they don’t want, don’t like, and no. But in the early stages of learning a speech device, in someone with her severity of communication delay that she is still at a beginner level of learning AAC device at 16, you have to be very careful about what symbols are introduced and when. Some people may get the idea that it’s as simple as putting in symbols you want your kid to learn and they can learn it, and that is so far from reality for many people. Some never can fully communicate Using any form of AAC unfortunately

Exactly and don't even get me started on how curated her AAC is she doesn't have signs or pecs for herself or any family members, most of it is food related and then there's a couple of her hobbies and then "toilet" and "break" nobody seems concerned about how this young lady has no way of telling others when she's sick, hurt or scared you think that as parents they'd want to teach her to tell them when she needs their help it would also greatly cut down on her meltdowns but they don't care about any of that I'm glad your daughter has access to full language reminds me of the channel "Kreeds World" his mom put curse words on his AAC and the phrase "I hate you" when people asked why she'd allow him to speak to her that way she simply said that he's a teenager too and autism or not he should have the freedom to express himself she didn't want to censor him, baby him or speak for him and that the diffence between special needs parents like you and "fathering autism" who take their parental and advocacy role to the extreme so much so that they've stiffled Abby freedom and development

I'm autistic and use to watch/adore them, then I found channels like this that expose the weird stuff that family vloggers/people like Assa and Cilla do. Then I realised how wrong everything was, and that was terrifying as someone on the spectrum that parents could treat their beautiful baby girl like this. They are taking advantage of their daughter, her disability and her dignity. I gotta agree with Josh when he says “they treat her like a zoo animal” cause they do..

Put the damn camera down and love your child and help her understand herself and her amazing differences. This is not fair to Abbie AT ALL. It really needs to stop. I hate that her parents exploit her. I always say to parents of autistic children “if you want advice ot help on how to help your autistic child then go to the experts…actually autistic adults who have lived experiences and are willing to share and advise with you” (many are willing) leave the kids alone!!!!

I agree completely. It's not fair to Abbie at all & it needs to stop. The fact that they exploit her & disregard her privacy on a literal day-to-day basis is bad enough, but it's even worse when you consider the fact that she doesn't have a "stop" or "no" button on her ipad -- presumably because her parents don't want to hear her say those things, so they don't even give her the option. It's so wrong. They should really be ashamed of themselves.

This is so sad. As a mom with a 14 year old son on the spectrum I can say that my son won't even allow me to take pictures and it is sad because I've barely got any pictures of him from the age of maybe 8 up until now because I had to respect him since it stressed him. The only time that I recorded a meltdown was during a period I was trying to get a diagnosis and believe me it didn't calm him down at all in fact he became more enraged and charged at me to get the phone out my hand. A meltdown is a meltdown and in my experience there is nothing I can do to change the situation, I have to just try and make sure everyone is safe and let it run its course. It's stressful as hell but imagine how much it is for the child going through it. 😢

When I used to have a channel, I uploaded one of my daughter's meltdowns and several people who are autistic told me how they would feel if someone taped them having a meltdown. It really opened my eyes. I respect and value their opinions very much because my daughter is not capable of telling me how she feels about being taped. For a while I went by the rule that if I wouldn't want anyone to see me doing what she was doing I wouldn't show it, but then eventually I stopped filming at all because my daughter is actually incapable of giving her consent. She can't and won't ever understand that lots of people, both good and bad can see her. Abbie may love seeing herself on film but she also cannot understand that thousands of people are watching her.

I’m a single mom with a 10 yr old boy and it’s autism, I don’t have the respite, and tons of people around they do helping. I give my son the attention he needs instead of having a camera in his face. When the kid is having a meltdown you deal with it, putting a camera in the kid’s face only makes things worse. Would you show these images with the world of it were your kid? Neurotypical kids do crazy things all the time, they have accidents, but nobody cares to film these kids at their most vulnerable moments…Why? Is it because your kid would be embarrassed or upset to have such vulnerable images of them out on RU-vid? But, it’s somehow ok for Abby to be exploited because she has autism. I think people think that they don’t understand what’s being shared, or won’t have the capabilities of being embarrassed. Even those who are nonverbal autistic still understand what is going on around them, they just haven’t been able to get their words out yet. My son can sign when he needs a break, and he uses his talker to say outright, “I need a break”. These kids deserve respect, to have their dignity made a priority. I expect my son to listen to me, but it’s also my job to do what is right for him, to protect his dignity, and not to exploit him and his disability for fame or money. Abby has outright said no in videos and they ignore her. They treat her like an animal instead of a young girl. It is no one’s business how she uses the bathroom, when she has an accident, a bad meltdown, her period…I wouldn’t want anyone seeing me at my most vulnerable moments, and Abby deserves that right even if she doesn’t fully understand it.

@@graced2321 That is so true. You can tell my son visibly relaxes when he comes home. If he’s had a frustrating day at school he will come home and act out usually because he knows that it’s safe for him to let those feelings out. It’s a good thing that our kids feel that safety with us and the home we provide them. My heart breaks for Abby because she gets a camera shoved in her face when she is just trying to be at home. They don’t listen to her when she communicates that she doesn’t want something, in fact they usually make her do the very thing she doesn’t want to. How are oils they feel if we took videos of them on the toilet, or talked about moments in their lives that were embarrassing, it should be no different for Abby!

no child should EVER be made to hug a stranger or even a family member if they choose not to.. My mom (and I am 49), always told us kids that no one has a right to touch your body without consent including Mom and Dad. I can remember my aunt wanting me to hug her boyfriend when I was little,, I was a super shy kid and I didn't want to,, my aunt tried to force it and my mom stepped up and told her I didn't have to if I wasn't comfortable. Believe me, I ended up hugging him as I got to know him,, he was an awesome guy but the point is, I was not comfortable at that moment in time and wasn't forced on me,, that is how sexual assault happens and how the victim learns to keep secrets.. Abbie should never be forced to hug a person no matter who it is.. I do agree to an extent that kids shouldn't have the say on everything,, I believe kids nowadays do have a little too much rights over their parents,,,, BUT when it comes to making videos,, that is a privacy issue and should be respected,, kids are not put on this earth to be our money makers,, that is our job, to provide for them,, not the other way around.

This is the "circus freak" phenomenon. People are drawn to the "unusual", "weird", "exotic", etc. *This is NOT about "awareness".* You can speak to doctors and professionals who treat children with illnesses or disorders about what a meltdown looks like (or seizures, etc). NO ONE needs to get this information from watching an innocent child on RU-vid. This is incredibly inhumane. She is not an adult consenting to life of being a sideshow attraction.

In my eyes this is simple. We can educate and help people without filming constantly and abusing someone’s inability to give informed consent . PERIOD. I have autism. When a melt down happens its because Im having sensory overload. I want to stop the world and get off. Want to be somewhere alone so I can chill out again. If someone filmed me during that time I don't think it would end well for them! The fact is, Abby is not able to understand the concept of what you tube is. She can't comprehend that her dad makes all these videos and they are watched by millions of strangers around the world. She cannot consent because she would not understand what she is consenting to. This is abuse of a vulnerable person , plain and simple. In life, we make decisions to protect our own dignity. For children and vulnerable people, it's up to the caretakers to protect their dignity.

I guess Abby got sick and threw up and Asa and Cilla made a HUGE deal of it, and made a big deal that the son had to pick up after Abby being sick instead of be with his friends. They made Abby go to her room right away (said, this isn't a punishment...) and then the 3 cried in the hallway....Cilla said, "THIS IS OUR LIFE..." well crying. Like they have it soo hard cause Abby puked ( and Asa went on and on about how she pukes soooo much and it gets everywhere). So awful. I'll be 100% honest I used to watch autism channels like father autism because it was like watching a TV drama. Things going wrong was interesting to me. Like looking into an animal exhibit. I always knew it was not right and I was supervised the parents would allow the public to view half the things they filmed. I'm glad people are calling it out because people like me watched for the wrong reasons. Not to learn but to observe disaster.

How come Isiah gets the choice to say no but Abby doesn’t? What do they mean children don’t have rights?? THEY DON’T MAKE ANY SENSE!! Abby straight up says no and they ignore her. Children absolutely have rights. They are entitled to a safe environment, good nutrition, healthcare, and education. Not only is she a child but she’s also disabled, her rights are being violated all around the board. As a disabled child she has the right to survive, the right to develop, she has the right to dignity, the right to be protected from harm, and the right to participate. And with the right to participate, is the right to deny. Disabled children also have the right to voice their opinion and one of the only things she is truly able to voice is NO, which they often violate. They’re supposed to protect her and they’re not. They are constantly putting her in harms way. Let’s not forget her being left with underage Isiah at the convention when she had a meltdown and refused to take elevators from sensory overload and they had to take the stairs and the parents were nowhere to be found. The kids were WIPED after and Isiah was clearly nervous. If she was at a residential home, they would be sued for the way they treat her. If they were staff, they would instantly be fired for nonstop violations of rights. She cannot give informed consent because she cannot be properly informed. When she sees her face in the viewfinder, she doesn’t realize that hundreds of thousands of other people are seeing it too. All she sees is her beautiful reflection. It breaks my heart to see her in sensory overload with a camera in her face. Or if they ask her if she wants to do something and she clearly says no and they make her do it anyways. Or how they constantly put her in overwhelming situations, acting as if it’s “exposure”, but it’s just ways to push her buttons to get content. THEY’RE DISGUSTING, I have to stop otherwise I will go all day.

I don’t think it would be a bad idea if Abbie experienced a group home setting. The things they do with her and what she is allowed to do is unrealistic in most situations. If Asa and Priscilla should perish who is going to take her to Dunkin’s everyday, will “going” everyday be a possibility, as she gets older I think it unrealistic to expect Summer and Isiah to take on the responsibility of Abbie. For the record, I do think they exploit her and probably would have different made decisions if she wasn’t income producing.

Kids DO have rights! Unfortunately, they have to rely on their parents to uphold them...KIDS like poor Abby get screwed when their parents have dollar signs clouding their judgement. If you are someone who has no experience with Autism Autistic people OR people with disabilities in general, please DON'T go to RU-vid to try to educate yourself because you're probably not going to get an honest depiction of what someone actually goes through. Find an organization near you & reach out to them. Almost ALL of them are 100% willing to provide resources to you & will gladly answer any questions you may have. A lot of them even have free trainings, etc. that offered online. I even suggest asking about volunteer opportunities with these organizations...The Special Olympics always needs people to help & it's an absolute blast attending their events! Since Abby is non verbal they can get her a AAC device. This is used for non verbal people to communicate with. She can press “no” or “yes” along with other buttons so she can communicate. But of course they won’t get her that because they want her to remain non verbal so they can just take advantage of her.
@kaseymomier1868
@kaseymomier1868 2 года назад
as far as speech generating devices, I see many people in the comments getting the false idea that you can just say “I want so and so to be able to communicate this and this and this, so I’ll put it on their iPad!” This is not how it works. I am not commenting on Fathering Autism , only trying to educate people about parts of Autism that are being misinterpreted or misunderstood in the comments section.. It is like learning a language, because, well, it is learning a language. Overwhelming them with way too many symbols can have the opposite effect and overwhelm them. Speech devices typically will have all of the spots available for a beginner set up with someone with equivalent expressive skills as Abby, which may be 6-12 ish squares per page but this can vary. You ALWAYS only put symbols to represent things they would commonly attempt to communicate. So if they LOVE crackers, then there will be the symbol for food, leading to the symbol for cracker, if they love to swing every single day, a button for play, and then swing. Until they have a better grasp of communication, if “no” and “stop” is not a well understood concept, as it is a difficult concept to teach those with severe receptive delay, it can actually be confusing and detrimental to progression to introduce that symbol too early into the process of learning the SGD.
@kaseymomier1868
@kaseymomier1868 2 года назад
I copied and pasted lol, not referring to fathering Autism specifically, just trying to help people better understand that the journey to learning communication for non verbal Autistics varies just as widely as Autism itself!❤️ Many Autistics unfortunately never are able to learn AAC methods at all, and have a more physical, but less functional form of communication. Some don’t learn until well into adulthood. And no and yes are difficult concepts for those with severe receptive language struggle unfortunately, which leaves them more vulnerable in many environments

They keep talking about meltdowns as if they're synonymous with tantrums. They are NOT the same thing. A child throws a tantrum because they want something. An autistic child (or adult) melts down because they're completely overwhelmed by the situation and don't know how else they can deal with their emotions. It's not something that should be looked at as "bad" behavior that needs to be punished, because the autistic person isn't acting destructively on purpose in order to manipulate the people around them. Saying "Abby's meltdowns stop when we turn the camera on" as if filming her is some kind of discipline strategy, and likening her meltdowns to a neurotypical kid's tantrums, just proves that they aren't even properly informed about their child's disability that they claim to be "advocating" for.

Right after he said, "she doesn't have a button on her iPad for 'no filming'," I said: "Add it." And I've only become aware like this since watching your videos. I watched the Maass family's video when it was first uploaded and because I didn't know any better and had exposure to that same toxic thinking (you do what we tell you (when it's not even something important)), I didn't think twice about it (at that time). I used to think what they did was good because it made IDD less taboo. I agreed they shouldn't have to keep her inside all the time; so the more people who knew about IDD and autism, the more understanding there would be in general. Then parents of children in the same and similar situations wouldn't have to deal with the staring, whispering, and ignorant remarks. But you're absolutely right about most of the videos. I don't need to see how she uses the pot, I don't need to see how her pits get shaved, I don't need to see her face covered in blood, and I don't need the camera in her face when she's having a difficult moment and needs de-escalation. (The toilet video never sat right with me anyway. I avoided that one.) Also, can you tell me that trick to download RU-vid videos? You type something extra in the link. 👀

I am leery of commenting on any vlogs anymore. I have been attacked so many times for an opinion so before I give mine, please understand that I was a fan of FA but I no longer am and that is, in large part due to this channel expanding my mind on several points. Okay, that said, I know that on social media a lot of people put themselves out there as perfect. Their house is always clean, their kids are always well behaved, etc. And then you have other mothers who are struggling constantly watching these "perfect" parents wondering why they can't be the same way. And that they are failing as parents. They are probably much happier to find a vlog with "normal" kids that talk back, have tantrums, etc In that same thinking, I can imagine that some parents with autistic children do see some of Abbie's bad days, can relate and even feel a bit better about what they deal with when they see Asa & Priscilla going through the same. That is the only thing I can imagine may be a comfort to some people watching their vlog. However, the more I watched FA, the more I realized that Asa films the bad moments to put the hero's spotlight on himself and Priscilla. Like "look at all we have to deal with". Especially if they are under fire of criticism...then it becomes "look at all we have to deal with and on top of that, we get internet bullied". My aha moment with Asa was one vlog when in the beginning he mentioned Abbie was to have a dr appt later that day. At the end of the vlog he says the dr appt didn't happen but that he wasn't going to go into why that was because he "doesn't have to share everything". True. He doesn't have to share everything but who edits the vlog? Why not remove the part mentioning the appt. to begin with? No, he left it in so people would ask about it and then he could make a point of how people demand to know everything and he doesn't have to share anything he doesn't want to. He made himself look like a victim and his fans look like they don't know how to be respectful of Abbie's privacy. Ironic. I find him to be very manipulative not only of his viewers but of his family. When Isaiah was preparing to leave for his first year of college, so many times Asa would shove his camera in Priscilla's face and mention Isaiah leaving...she would cry and then he would say "oh don't cry". The desired effect for the vlog. Manipulation again. I do believe he started the vlog for good reasons but as time went on, he learned to manipulate the viewers to pull in the most money. Abbie has been lost in this. There have been several times where Abbie is signing "break" when Asa sits beside her with the camera. Is she asking for a break from the camera, a break from Asa...who knows? Maybe neither. But what I do know is Asa doesn't seem to care because he keeps on recording.

I cannot stand parents like this. Saying children don’t have rights, excuse me?? There are so many parents that think they own their children and they can do anything they want with/to them. It’s disgusting. Things like this have lasting effects.

I hate parents like that more than anything. Like seeing someone smack their child on the bus or the store and if I speak up I just get the "Don't tell me how to raise my kid" spiel. No, sorry, your child is not your property. It is a human with rights to not be mistreated, and people can and should stand up for them.

I have Autism, having a meltdown, should not be shown on carmer, when I have a meltdown, I feel so embarrassed afterwards.

How come they think its Abbie's responsibility to teach people about autism? These people make me sick.

You can be an advocate for autism. You can spread awareness about how it’s OK to be frustrated because it has difficulties. But you can do all that without recording your child and blasting their business all over the internet for the world to see. That kind of stuff is for small communities and only when your trying to seek for help and guidance. It’s not for millions of people. But like you said they are doing it this way because it’s a video that will get views and having all that money I’m sure makes them feel better about it.

In this case, it's even more evil and vulgar, as Abby is not only autistic, she is also severely IDD, regardless if she's 10 or 40, she is unable to give consent or comprehend that she's being exploited and abused. She has no idea what is internet or RU-vid and how she's displayed for monetary gains.

The minimum age should be 18 for these platforms but kids with disabilities should never be on the platform unless they can make the decision theirself!
