As someone with a physical disability, I am so glad that my parents are nothing like these people. They would never embarrass me like this, they never exploited me as a child, especially since we didn't have RU-vid in the 90's and early 2000's. They took me to so many doctor's appointments, surgeries, consultations, sleep studies, etc. but they never once filmed any of these events to show their friends and say, "Look how my daughter is screaming and crying and in so much pain! Isn't that silly?! God, what's wrong with her?" They bought me toys and took me out for ice cream and held me for hours when I was recovering from anesthesia, comforting me and letting me be me, loving and accepting me no matter what. IT WAS GENUINE. Thank you Josh, for raising awareness about how disgusting some parents can be when it comes to their children and how they don't care how they make them feel and look.

As a mother of an autistic child - this disgusts me. Listening to my son cry because he is terrified and doesn’t understand why is torturous. I don’t understand how this mother can hold a camera and capture this moment and worse publish it for strangers to see on the internet. This doesn’t help anyone to see. The only videos I ever watched to help me as a parent were ones that other parents put out with examples for signs of autism when I was concerned for my son and I did find those extremely helpful. If you want to help educate other autism parents or give them tips or advice then all you need to do is talk to us - leave your kids off video. All children need to be protected - especially those with special needs.

@@CrystalCat24 If a disabled person is telling you that special needs is an offensive term then you have to have some respect. Special needs is offensive because it isn’t an accurate description of an individual’s needs. The needs of a disabled person aren’t special. There isn’t anything special about a disabled person who needs a wheelchair, who needs accommodations, who just needs help with tasks. You wouldn’t describe your needs as special so why would people describe disabled people’s needs as special? Disabled people have human needs, not special needs. The term is very condescending and infantilizing. I may not be a parent but I’m an autistic deaf individual and can’t stand it when people use the term special needs. Disabled people do not have “special” needs. They have human needs.

As a special needs parent, I just want to say again and again how incredibly grateful I am that this is how you use your platform. Often, parents are these kids only true advocate in the world. And when they turn from advocating to exploitation, it's amazing to know there is someone like you waiting in the wings to take up the cause for their basic human rights. Thank you for that Josh ❤
@jesswoodmanc4794
@jesswoodmanc4794 2 года назад
I agree wholeheartedly. When we raise children with extra needs we are often backed into corners, begging, looking for answers too. Desperation becomes an actual thing. It is understandable that a parent advocating would look to these types of influencers, simply because they exist. However, it is just like any mommy influencer, not face value. We have to jump through hoops and climb mountains to see to our children's needs because they deserve normal, safe, functional lives. It is incredibly unsafe and frustrating to see an advocate plastering photos alone, to tell a story that doesn't belong to her though is a whole other thing.

Along with the money aspect, I think a lot of these people do it as a "look at me and what a great parent I am", "look how fantastic I am to be raising such a difficult child". They get a lot of praise from people, and that's reinforcing, it makes them feel good. I think that's why a lot of even the smaller channels who don't get as much income choose to exploit their children in these ways.

I’m just under 15 minutes in and I’m having a really hard time watching this. Having a ten year old son who is non verbal with autism every part of me is cringing, wanting to face this mother. People think that kids and adults with autism who struggle verbally and have lots of stimms are somehow less intelligent, they don’t understand what’s going on around them, and that is completely false. My son understands you, he can use a talking device to tell you off (in 10 yr old terms), he has feelings that get hurt by stupid people saying stupid things, he is the sweetest kid on the planet, has a smile that is healing, he also has meltdowns, gets angry just like everyone else, but he doesn’t have the words all the time. Imagine being trapped in your head, knowing what you want to say/do, and not being able to. They talk about this girl like she isn’t in the room, and it’s sickening. A real autism mom is too busy being there for their kid, listening to her doctor to film everything. I have met some of the most amazing moms in my support group, and none of them are bringing in thousands exploiting their kids. Most of the women in my group are like me…we are single because most men run when it gets really hard, not sure how we are going to pay the bills, sacrificing everything to get our child the best therapies out there, and we spend our days fighting for our kids not exploiting them on social media. Can you see the occasional video of my son on Instagram, yes, but usually it’s because he’s doing something so amazing I have to share, just like a neurotypical parent films their baby’s first word. I have a video of him saying “Good Girl” to our dog the other day, and it was a celebration in our home, we celebrate every new word or sentence. But, I will never shove a camera in my child’s face for money, or share his personal business. It’s not with the money! Put you’re kid first!

@@keriezy my youngest son and niece were completely nonverbal until they were 5.5, and 8 years old respectively - yes they were much more aware of peoples facial and body language, they picked up on more than people were saying - but they both refused to interact with people outside of their immediate family, including their therapists - it was the GAPS protocol that eventually healed them and got them to a point of being able and willing to interact with others, and their therapists. Yes, while many nonverbal people are of above average intelligence, that often leads them to distance themselves from people and their trivialities = they also realize that whilst they are unable to talk, that it is expected of them in social settings, and making eye contact leads to people trying to talk to them, and someone having to expose their truth yet *again to some random stranger.

I really agree with you on this one, Josh. As a professional that works with disabled children I think it’s important to get education out about ASD/DS but I think this video could easily be made without their child in it. They can just retell the story and give tips/tricks for doctors appointments with autistic children or children with Down Syndrome (For example, they could have said “we wish we brought our wheelchair, because we had a hard time getting her to walk into the building) Additionally, I agree with their strategy to warn her in advance but saying “they might take your blood” isn’t nearly as helpful as telling the truth (ex. “They ARE going to take your blood.”) I also imagine she has receptive language difficulties and they would have better prepared her by showing her pictures and reading stories about the doctor and getting shots/blood drawn. Keeping things in the grey area isn’t helpful for any child. On another note, imagine being that nurse that had to come in and support her while the mom stands there with a camera 😂🤦‍♀️
@kristin8886

I’m absolutely on board with your mission to end the exploitation of kids and their families cashing in on them. Autumn has autism but also Down syndrome which in itself is a disability that many of us parents want to bring awareness to. I have a daughter who is the same age as Autumn and has Down syndrome. As a parent of a child in a similar situation, to answer your question at around minute 4:50, the reason we connect as special needs parents to these videos is because we fell less alone and more “normal” than we do any other time. I had a video recommendation on this channel years ago and I did find value in some of her advice regarding an issue I was also dealing with with my daughter. HOWEVER, when I personally share situations, moments that are positive or struggles or photos/videos of my daughter I do it WITHIN a community of people I personally know who can offer support or advice or appreciate that moment. Never in a million years would I ever open the door to a world of strangers and creeps to see those moments. I’ll never understand how a mother could sit and read hateful comments when I am a literal wolf when it comes to protecting my vulnerable child. I have and will tear apart a human soul if that person ever mistreated or devalued my child. I’ll never understand how money and a small internet fame can take that instinct away.

As someone who is autistic "special needs" is a term many of us don't like, because it is infantilizing and our needs are just needs! This is also why you should be listing to those who are autistic! It's sad that people do this. Disabled people aren't not content either. Wanted to say as an autistic individual, special needs is not a term I personally agree with because it says our needs as disabled people are extraordinary or special. Our needs are varying and they just need adapting to and accepting from non disabled people. Keep calling these people out! I'm doing it too! ✊🏾 Edit- ABA therapy is strongly disliked by most autistic people because it teaches the child to hide who they are. Not only autistic people are in ABA, but other people who have other disabilities are subjected to this "therapy". There's many studies that prove that ABA is ineffective. I can't post them here because RU-vid deletes comments with links in them.

I don't know if RU-vid deleted this comment (even though I never provided a link) or what, but I will repost this. Also autistic. Thank you, this comment section needs this. Just call us disabled. If anything, as extreme as it sounds, the term "special needs" is almost a slur at this point. And yes, is harmful, even "good" and "modern" ABA.

Legitimate curiosity follows. I have no experience or knowledge of ABA. Do you have any knowledge if the ABA therapies are developed by experts in disability care using peer reviewed research based knowledge? I am just wondering about the quality of the therapy. There isn’t a one size fits all therapy for a group label so I’m thinking that these type of therapies exist for the families to cope better than actually helping the differently baled person.
@kaishawna3753
@kaishawna3753 2 года назад
@@LadyGreyAgeingDisGracefully I can better explain this via reddit or discord because talking about it would take forever to discuss. ABA is a therapy simply that does not help autistics. It teaches autistic people that who they are is wrong and that they have pretend and hide who they are. Also differently abled is not taken lightly by me personally. I prefer autistic or disabled.

Will you be a good girl? Maybe not cry today?". Like wtf, she is literally making her feel anxious by anticipation, why is she telling her that in the doctor they will do something to her that might make her cry? Also, why does she crying means she's not strong or not a "big girl"? Ffs

Same as a acual autstic, Alot of them extreamly miseducate then refuse to listen to the acual autstic community who has lived experience 🤦🏻‍♀️ I couldn't imagine, if my child had something I didn't, I would listen to the community they where apart of, like it or not, they know what my child's going through where as I could only guess. But they refuse to listen. I couldn't imagine if my mom exploited all of my disabilties before I could give informed consent 🤦🏻‍♀️ it's gross. Then they claim it's for "autism acceptance or autism awareness" but there's PLENTY of adult autstics on RU-vid, TikTok, etc, that they could follow to get that info from! We share what we feel comfortable with & are adults who can consent to what we chose to share. We also live with autstim, so know it better then anyone else who's not in our bodies & doesn't know what we go through 🤦🏻‍♀️

A little tangent: One of the reasons why many people hate the term ‘special needs’ is because it’s an unnecessary euphemism. There is already a term for this concept: ‘disability’, which is not a bad word in itself. It is purely neutral. Dis- means different. Ability means, of course, the capacity of doing something. Therefore, Disability means The person is capable but in a different way. For example, a non-vocal person can communicate via a device, a person that had a spinal cord injury can get around in a wheelchair.

I used to work in an Alzheimer’s Care facility and one of the biggest rules we as staff had was to preserve the dignity of the patients. Sure, they don’t understand or remember when they’re embarrassed by having messy hair or pajamas on all day. But they are still human beings that have the right to dignity. Just because someone is disabled and you think they don’t understand embarrassment doesn’t mean that they aren’t still intelligent humans. Every single human being should be treated with dignity and respect. Showing these low moments online, carrying your daughter through a parking garage over your shoulder like that, etc are all things that take away that child’s dignity. Do better!!!!

I never thought about monetary value. I wanted anyone - someone to help us. Well through FB a woman helped me get to the right doctor and she was diagnosed with a newly discovered variant. So we used it for the good! My daughter will be in a published paper and that will help other children get diagnosed but never in ten years did we see another child with CdLS because it is very rare. By the way, this mother doesn't understand how to really parent much less parent a child who needs higher supports. Behavior is communication.

I agree I do not understand why doctors are allowing this to happen in the state I live in it we live in a it's a two-party consent basically that means both parties in the conversation is being recorded have to give consent for it to be recorded it's so most of the doctors here at least the doctors that I know of do not allow any type of video recording any type of audio recording anything like that. The only reason I would even think reasonably that you should film a doctor's appointment of a child or yourself is for your personal use only for example if the doctor was talking about certain different types of treatments things like that so that you can head go back and read and see what the doctor said but it definitely don't need to be on the internet for everybody to see

My children would act this way if I was constantly saying ‘she doesn’t like this, this causes her anxiety, she doesn’t like things in her ears’ etcetera then my children would just assume (because of the mothers controlling behaviour) that it’s something to be scared of, to fear, that it’s going to be painful so you’re telling/showing them that what we’re doing once we get there is going to be dreadful!!! I have a grandson that has a mother just like this but the funny thing is is that when my grandson is with me, I believe he feels free (she has over the past 3 years reduced our contact but I know it’s because she controls his behaviour & can’t control him when he spends time with his paternal family & she doesn’t speak to her own family but he has many illnesses that are made up/exaggerated massively)! Also, funny story, raising autumn blocked me on TikTok a while back 😂 They block ALOT of the acually autstic community because they don't like when we stand up for our community and things we know are wrong or not, as autstics with learned experience. We know how things affect us, we LIVE & have always had autstim! But they block ALOT of us when we say things they say/do/educate about it HARMFUL. Or when we say, as autstics, we'd be disgusted if our parents exploited or showed our meltdowns or something, they don't like when the acual autstic community says anything against what they do, so *block*. This is how so much miseducation gets out there 🤦🏻‍♀️ bc they refuse to listen to the community this affects and has to be "right". 🤦🏻‍♀️ So things with disabled kids, if the community of such disabilty chimes in, they block the minute someone says what they're saying or doing is harmful. Like it or not, we'll always know what your child's feeling & going through better then u. We live & grew up with autstim. U can only guess how they feel, we KNOW. But these autstim mommies refuse to listen and block us first chance they get 🤦🏻‍♀️ They shut up the Autstim community there child is apart of, and silence us. I really don't get it. What if there child grows up, educates on what was harmful to them with lived experience as a autstic, then able bodied "mommy" influencers came in to shut them up? We have this disabilty. We'll always know what it's like over someone who doesn't have autstim. That's just fact 🤷🏻‍♀️
