Ignore the criticism, your off the couch learning and having fun. The knowledge and experience your gaining is worth it, even if its all scrap in the end.
I watch your videos after my day in bed and it satisfies me so much knowing that there are more people who love just as much as I do fixing things, particularly motors/vehicles and other machines. The comments section and your videos make my day great and bring it to a perfect end.
Your are doing just fine. If the pistons are stuck, remove the camshaft, put a grease fitting in a spark plug, with both valves closed pump grease into the cylinder, until it breaks the piston free. It will use a lot of grease, but it works. I would get stuck marine engines free that way.
Think about building a overhead crane for your shop man. If you keep wrestling things like that you will be essentially cripple when you get 40 and you will have no choice but build one or quit. so build one now. i really enjoyed your lathe build, I know you have the engineering skills needed for a overhead crane and would be youtube gold to watch. keep up the good work...and keep your back in the process
Don't let people sitting in front of there computer tell you how to tinker. if it wasn't fro tinkers we would have no automobiles no telephones and no internet to criticise people for there creativity. Just do what makes you happy and never apologize for wanting to learn hands on. Keep up the good work.
best thing to do is NOT face a camera towards light sources...... like the 2 windows behind you... put lights and windows behind your cam. P.S. don't worry about anyone thinkin' u don't know what ur doing even if you don't!! I was the same when i was young, and I fixed all my toys by trial, error, manuals, and google! I'm a good mechanic now. keep it up!
I love the attitude, You may not have much of an idea what you are doing but at least that's exactly how you are going into this. After all you aint going to learn anything unless you throw yourself into the deep end from time to time.
Awesome Video man. Worse case you can grab a cheap drill mounted hone from harbor freight runt it through the cylinders and just run it just like it is may smoke a little but not sure that is that is a big of a deal. Looks really good though. Timing chain and tensioner look decent too those are the parts that where toast on a few that I bought over the years.
By far my favorite video bro.seems people care more about something that ISNT theirs then their own.to them it must feel like they're being violated😂 keep the vids coming bro
nice man I got a Kawasaki 500 I wanted to put into a dune buggy frame slash go-kart frame but it ended up being too nice of a bike to Salvage the motor good luck with your build man
I love the armchair in the garage. Personally, I find that half the work I get done is made possible by sitting on my little garage couch for a sec to re-gather my thoughts.
Who cares what people say. You’re learning as you go. As long as you learn from your mistakes, you’re all good man. You’re a talented kid, keep doing what you’re doing man.
I love the learning and I love you just dropped the cam chain in the case good thing your taking cylinder off cause if you wasn’t that’s some you wouldn’t want to drop in the case. Hahahaha.
I been thinking to re-watch this series and that moment the shop caught my attention like, damn mate your shop has a lot of stuffs now compare to these days. wow.
I rebuilt a 1973 cb500 engine. Bro. If you're gonna try to salvage it by rebuilding the top end and reboring out the cylinders (DOO EET) just please look up a service manual. Those cams and timing chain have to be on there a certain way when they're put back together. Also since you dropped the timing chain, you have to take the engine all the away apart to the bottom now
If there is no pitting in the walls take some atf+ gas And put that in the cylinders and let them sit and then drain them out you'll need new rings but you won't need cylinders
forgot to say that the other comments are pretty great of an idea clean the cylinder with vinegar .but remember to clean the bottom part of the carbs with GAS and ill recomment A old toothbrush to clean the inside walls of the carb DO NOT TAKE THE RUBBER GASKET OFF when cleaning the carb it WILL RUIN IT. and the last thing is blow in all the holes when you take the carburator all apart!. im just writing this of my exp(i cant spell that well) i have been working on alot of 2 wheelers :-) like the channel
If you manage to scrub and hone the cylinders enough to get it to run, that would be great, even if you eventually get new jugs and pistons. Just check the compression after you lap the valves with compound(it's easy if you have a valve spring compressor). then reassemble it. Put some 2 stroke gas in the sparkplug hole, and try to start it.
up to you but i had a predator 212 came to me off a go cart it was stuck just like that had a lot of rust in the bore so i took it all apart cleaned it all and honed it out the guy brought me a parts engine that had blew the rod and i used the old rings on the piston that was stuck sure enough it runs good no smoke and power can be done is it the right way no but does work. just a thought. the piston rings were stuck and i broke it that y i got different set
those motors are very good and will run for significantly more miles than 22,000 miles. However, the gs500 engines are very particular on valve clearances. Go ahead and check clearances all around and shim them if needed.
Dude, sometimes I feel your mistakes are just happening cuz you're always hushing things too much. Dude you're awesome! Plan ahead. Take some time to allow yourself to see the mistakes you don't want to make 🙂
for the 175 you could just look up wich size the carb is originally then buy one in the same size, make a custom mount for it, put the right jet in it and it will run
Not sure if you read these. I like the progression of your vids. You're learning. I remembered when I was your age. Here is my two cents. I would pick up a hone and hone the cylinders. I would say a ball hone, but kinda pricey. Just pick up a stone hone and touch up the cylinders, See how they look. It you have some pitting, see how deep it is. Don't be to worried about small ones. If you can, hone it all out. But if not just clean up the cylinder walls with a nice cross hatch. Then I would clean the pistons and then throw some new rings on it, Make you you file them properly. You can google this, if you never have. The only real concern here is the valves and valve seats. All can be fix but more difficult on your own. You could lap them depending on the condition. But I'm sure a local machine shop could clean them up for you. Meaning they would cut the seat and the valve. That is if they are savable. Sorry for the novel, Keep on pulling stuff apart and learning. Nothing wrong with messing up and hey Fuck the haters. They are out there and nothing you can do about it. Keep wrenching man!
any engine I've come across that has had a possibility of rust in the cylinders. or has just sat for years I fill with auto trans fluid let it set at least over night. it will lubricate it will take care of any rust and it burns once the fires. just make sure to rotate the engine by hand to purge the excess out of the cylinders
Next time with the chain get some wire and hold it up as you pull the head off. dont want to be dropping chain down if your not going to split the case
Hows the piston and rings in that engine? MIGHT be good enough to re-use. You might even get away with just new rings. Having this engine on a go kart would be awesome.
Ratherbwelding your probably not reading this but I am your most biggest fan of all time I love the stuff you do please give me a shout out if you don't want to that's fine just want you know good job good luck on the gs500 Ps if your reading please reply
Places like that exaggerate it to be way bigger of a problem than it actually is. You could honestly just Hone the cylinder walls and get new piston rings and call it a day
Dude it's not the bad let the valves soak in Apple chider vinegar for 3 days and dingle ball hone the cylinder wall clean the carbs and it should be good to go
Clean everything with spray Carb clean and a cheap BRASS wire toothbrush (not Steel) from like harbor freight- , I'd try to clean and HONE that Cyl you have there before you buy a new one! either way you'll need to run a hone up and down the new one to make some fresh cross-hatch marks to re-seat the rings........ Watch out as I said in an earlier video, those GS500 twins are prone to have a bad 2nd gear!
Make sure you balance the crankshaft in that 4speed gear box before you you make it run with a briggs 3hp. You can do it yourself in your shop, but you will need to take out the crank. If you would like details on how to balance the crank leave me a comment. I would be glad to help if you would like.
it is possible to reuse the rusty parts ive seen people get engine found outside and repair them if you were to jetwash the piston and cylinders while there stuck ike that dry the and then coat them with oil it will hel you to remove the pistons without scoring the cylinder or ruining the rings
For that year of bike 22,000 miles isn't that bad. Not sure how dependable those motors are known to be but but id say if you got it running the bearings and other stuff should have another 10,000+ miles left before showing any signs of wear
should build a mini trophy truck or long travel buggy, those are always fun, what kind of goof thinks its a good idea to pull the plugs from an engine and leave it outside...
You got that cylinder for so cheep because it scored on the inside people so those for really cheap so people can bore them out it's probably going to be messed up
Take piston out and clean them up hone e cylinders and pit new rings on sperate ring gaps the only way its bad is if it has pits in metal then throw away pits can't bfixed but most time clean up and fix let me see parts online I can tell you I've been building engines for a long long time
