Hi everyone,
My name is Tracy and I garden (indoors and outdoors) in zone 5/6 (judging by our last winter) in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching a video of my Amaryllis Bulbs Starting to Bloom and Easy Care filmed on December 18, 2021.
These are one of my favourite Christmas/Holiday blooming plants and they are super easy to care for and the bulbs last for many years of enjoyment.
Just in case you wonder why - I keep the bulbs planted in the plastic cans for easy transport (lighter) throughout the season.
In terms of fertilizer - I sprinkle about 1/4 tsp of my all-purpose slow release fertilizer (10-10-10) on top after they finish blooming every 2 years or so.
Amaryllis plants do best in bright light or a sunny spot with lots of morning sun.
To get the bulbs to re-bloom:
1) Remove the spent bloom stalks after blooming
2) Keep the plants In a location with a lot of morning sun until early September
*6-8 weeks from Mid-December:
3) Move the plants Into a low light spot and STOP watering in order to let the bulbs go dormant…or you can remove the bulbs from soil (cut off all leaves about 1” above the top of the bulb)
4) When the leaves dry out…cut everything off.
5) In order for the bulbs to rebloom by mid December: In early October, bring the plants and place them in a Location with morning sun (or put them under grow lights for 2-4 hours). Start watering the plants once you start seeing new growth.
6) In order to get them to rebloom around Valentine’s Day (early Feb)…I bring the bulbs out of dormancy around mid-December.
Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video.
Happy holidays and see you next time! 🪴💚

Wanted to add how fantastic this channel is because 1) it's Canadian 2) it's zone 5 Canadian and 3) you maximize all of your indoor blooms! I am a fellow "Christmas" cactus addict. Your geraniums inspired me so much that I took cuttings off my (overwintering) geraniums THIS MORNING! Just like you showed. Also, your tips to plant up multiple orchids. Beautiful. Thank you for showing me that I can have flowers in this horrible winter, too.

The “Christmas” cacti, Amaryllis and Orchids are my go to plants during the winter…the cacti start in November, then amaryllis and the orchids…some of my orchids are still blooming beautifully right now….these take me through to “spring” when I can start to do some outdoor gardening. Thank you Madeleine. We definitely share many love for plants.

@@TracysHomeGarden I agree 100%. I need to "up" my indoor game. I don't do well in the Canadian winter. Now that I see how many indoor blooms you have, and how beautifully they are arranged, I think that I have to get many more cacti, orchids & amaryllis. Cheaper than flying to Mexico, right? As for outdoor gardening, yes, I love your style. I love the hydrangeas and think because they are ? kind of native to this part of the world, pack in the hydrangeas & cornflowers. I have great success with lavender, but no luck with clematis and little luck with roses. I love your content!!

Just saw Soleil’s video yesterday and now I see you have beautiful snow in Toronto too❄️ We have had crazy weather almost all year and haven’t had any snow yet this year in the Chicago area😢 Your amaryllis are going to be so beautiful😍 I was really late to the game with amaryllis (planted early Dec) plus it’s actually my first time growing them, so mine are only just starting to peek out but hopefully they do okay. I’m not sure how much water to give - I’m scared to under/overwater them. Once a week, just a little bit? Do you water from above the moss, or peel it back? I didn’t know they do so well under grow lights. Will remember that for next year. Your holiday cacti are divine😍 - I have a few smaller plants with far fewer flowers so yours are definitely goals! Thank you for all your videos, they’ve given me so much inspiration and enjoyment this past year. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas🎄🌟❤️
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 2 года назад
Thank you Anita! 💚 I normally water under the moss and away from the crown of the bulb (but sometimes I water the moss as we have very dry winter air due to our central heating). I usually give each plant about 1-2 oz of water - they don’t need too much water as the bulbs already have a lot of water stored. Also there isn’t much soil in the pots so a little water goes a long way. In addition, every house has its own micro-climate so plants will have slightly different water requirements. My thing is “less is more”….so if you’re not sure - give it a little less water and if the leaves look droopy then increase the amount. Hope you have amaryllis blooms soon. Ps. I watched Soleil’s snow garden too! I think we may be great rivals for most snow ❄️ in the winter. 😁

Tracy, I have to add that I bought some amaryllis bulbs, including waxed, and they refused to bloom. I blamed Sobeys. After two years, I chopped off all their foliage, yelled at them. Told them "bloom or else" and guess what? They bloomed!!!
@madeleinewinterdown3256
@madeleinewinterdown3256 2 года назад
(I think the cutting of the foliage sends energy back into the bulb, doesn't it)... then they bloom (It wasn't the yelling!)
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 2 года назад
Hi Madeleine, These waxed amaryllis bulbs are my first ever as well. Someone also said the same about them not blooming. I wonder if they were sprayed with something to inhibit their growth (so the bulbs could just focus on blooms). I planted them up and they are blooming (last few bloom stalks) right now.
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden 2 года назад
With my other amaryllis bulbs…right about early in September….I put them in the dark…and I cut off all the leaves…and they bloom for me. Wait…the waxed bulbs did bloom for you? How wonderful! I’m so glad that it won’t be a “waste” of time for my waxed bulbs. Thank you for letting me know Madeleine. 💚💚💚
@madeleinewinterdown3256
@madeleinewinterdown3256 2 года назад
@@TracysHomeGarden yes, I admired yours, they are beautiful, but I am wary to buy the waxed ones again. Do you ever plant your amaryllis in the ground for the summer, then store them?
@madeleinewinterdown3256
@madeleinewinterdown3256 2 года назад
@@TracysHomeGarden the waxed one did, but it took two years and I hacked all its leaves off and threatened to throw it in the compost. Then it bloomed. But i won't buy those again! I wish we lived somewhere where we could get daffodil bulbs, narcissus, amaryllis, hyacinth, tulips for forcing etc. very easily every spring. (Like the UK) -- they're everywhere there!

Hi Tracy, I enjoy every video in your channel and I have introduced your channel to all my friends who love gardening. May I ask do these amaryllises come back every year? And what is your basement temperature for the dormancy purposes?
@TracysHomeGarden
@TracysHomeGarden Год назад
Hi Polly, I keep them in the cold room right now where it is dark and the temperature matches outside temperature. The next few days when the temps drop to single digit, I will move them into another spot where the temperature will be in the high teens or low 20. Our October and November temps have been warmer than usual so that may have an affect on the bulbs…and possibly delay the blooms. Ps. Thank you Polly 💚💚💚

Hi Tanya, I hope you are doing well. This past 6 weeks have been busy for me: I had surgery and had to isolate (twice) due to my close contact with someone who tested positive at work. I’m not sure if I have already mentioned that I’m a high school teacher and have also been very busy at work as we are coming close to the end of the first semester of hybrid teaching. Everything is much better for me now. Thank you so much for thinking of me. Take care and I’ll see you on my next video. 💚🙏💚

Gulseh, If you had the bulbs planted in the ground all summer then I would dig them up and place them in pots in early September. Then place the potted bulbs in a cool dark place…can cut off the leaves or let the leaves go yellow then cut. I think you did it right. 💚😁
