Whenever I'm doing maintenance on my 6.4 I come to your videos Ron. I can tell you were a good guy, the kind of guy if hang out with. You certainly are missed Sir.
Changed out my filter last night and feeling very accomplished, thanks to this video! I must have watched it 14 times, to make sure everything went smooth. Much appreciated!... and after reviewing Ron's channel, am terribly sorry to Ron's family and friends for their loss. Ron seemed like a fantastic guy (loved his reference to the cross on this video...). RIP, Ron.
Thanks for the video, specially the info (nib/tab and bleed hole, gasket, water separator membreme) info to look for on aftermarket primary filter - purolator had all four features.
Thanks Rom You always come up with good videos. Some time make one on all the right ways to pull the EGR valve from a 6.0 I wanted to show someone how and the only videos I found were lacking.
Hey body....tnx, for those great videos you do for people like us. Now the other day I change fuel filters, bottom one it was wrong and when I screwed the cap the filter got ripped in the middle So I change it with the one you show.. That day my truck worked perfectly, But next morning couldn't make to work it turn on them goes off...after copple day I've tried again, and does the same thing. WATCH YOU THING IT IS.....stays on 5 or so minutes then goes off...
Ron. Great video. Top filter is EASY.... bottom filter...wow.. that was terrible. The wiring loom was a bear to move (i have a 6.4). Make sure to others that you have a large drain bucket under the lower unit. i had 70 oz of fuel drain out and I was not prepared for that much fuel to come out.. One last point.. your ON/OFF trick was great... i had air in my system and it 6 times on the purge to get it cleaned out...
Hi Ron, Thanks for the great video. I was able to change the secondary filter fairly easily and I was also able to install a new water seperator valve and o rings. However, even with a 2 ft extension I am having a hard time getting the primary fuel filter cap off. I have a fairly shallow socket but can barely get it on the cap because of the wiring underneath. I didn't see any obvious wire clips that I could release to move the bundles. Any suggestions?
Changed my 1st fuel filter (primary) the same way. I had every extension on that I could find on my ratchet. That's the best and really only way to go. Ford made it a pain to change out that filter especially with a 4x4
I hadn't watched this particular video before changing my fuel filter and so I missed the part about the key switch trick. I tried starting my engine, which did and then it die. Turning the key several times did nothing. That's when I went searching for answers. After viewing this, I tried the key trick 6 times, then again six times and it didn't work. Looks like I was going to have to vent. After thinking about it, I unscrew the secondary filter cap. I slowly poured diesel fuel down the center tube, allow excess into the container, then reassembled the filter and cap. About a cup full. Back in the cab, I turned the key and I could hear a buzz. I waited for it to stop. Turned off the key and turned it back on six times. Then I started the engine, running it at about 2000 rpm's for a while. It seemed to work. Next, a 10 mile drive to be sure. I'll probably repeat the key trick once or twice (not six) now and then. Don't know for sure what made it work, but I thought I'd share.
Hey Ron, what would Couse a 6.0 to loose fuel prime over night? Changed fuel filters already with OEM ones but still loosing prime over a 10-12 hour period are there any check valves?
I'd heard that this Fuel Pump Jumper Harness (Ford part number 6C3Z-9F759-A) is used with the factory fuel pump wiring when replacing due to a new version pump being produced. do you know anything about it? is it a plug and play thing that would plug into my 05 6.0's that I could chop up for an aftermarket pump? or know of one I could use for that purpose if I ever look into a fass style pump?
Ron, I had to use a 3 foot long cheater bar to get the top filter cap off. The bottom cap is so tight I can't move it at all. Any ideas on how to get that thing loose? I cant get my cheater bar under the truck. Maybe jack it up?
Bud I need your advice, our 6L PS will crank and crank but it wont start I took the top fuel filter cap and filter out the fuel is green'ish the filter is fairly dirty and twisted haven't got to the bottom filter yet the truck is a tow truck w commercial chasis 2wd 550 going to change both out tomorrow and go from there, I didn't see any water or contaminants in the top fuel filter canister so im going to check the bottom after that im at a loss :( IDK ? now just to find the bottom fuel filter ?
Hey Ron, you have probably answered this before, but how often do you change your fuel filters? do you do it every 12K or more? I think i have about or a little over 12K on mine sense i have had my truck. just would like to have your thought on it.
we drained water on 2004 f250 but it feels like fuel keep coming from the drain plug none-stop, after 1 gallon we decided to shut the plug back on . Any ideas whats going on? does this means that part is broken or bad ?
Ron, The top fuel filter was a breeze, the lower one not so easy. The drain valve must have drained a gallon of fuel and really never stopped, I took the cap off to change the filter and it kept on coming. Hurried up and got it all back together, not before getting soaked with diesel. No the key was not on so I have no idea why a steady stream kept on. How much fuel should empty before its done? Messy job but got it done.
I did exactly like the video.. when I opened the valve in the bottom filter, instead of getting about a pint of gas...I got 1/2 gallon, so I closed it, then removed filter, got about a pint of diseal, primed for 30 secs about 8 times, truck started for 5 secs, so i knew air got into system... question is... why did so much fuel come out... and air got in
Ron, I changed mine the other day lower and upper but after I drained the lower for 30 seconds like the book says, when I took out the lower, it just kept on leaking fuel. By the time I got the new one in after fighting to get it back I had lost two gallons. What did do wrong? Thank you in advanced.
Ron, Great Video. On a different topic, I have a 2012 F-350 with a radiator leak (front driver's side, bottom of radiator). Can't afford $1,700 from the dealer. Any suggestions?
The fuel lifter at the filter is leaking. Does anyone have a suggestion. I have a 2008 Ford F250 6.4 Power Stroke.. Any suggestions are welcomed!! Thnak
after watching this video and hearing about the fuel pump could be damaged. This is going to the dealer. I only save about $85 doing it in the driveway. If it was summer I would try it. But, it's January in WNY. I'll do the oil change and air filter. The savings from that will pay for the dealer.
On my 6.0 I could not get the secondary cap back on without it trying to cross thread, until I put the filter in the cap and put it together with no issues. Can anyone tell me, is this an okay method?
To anyone who may be able to answer this if you've ever done it. Couldn't you drill your own weep hole in an aftermarket filter to make it so it can do the same thing as an oem filter so it functions the same?
I would assume you could, IF you also were able to recreate the "locating tab" that sticks out, this is what holds the filter in the proper position so the bleed hole is facing up. But now you've really spent enough time modifying the filter that I doubt you've actually saved anything by not buying OEM to begin with....
Ron, can you just live the spout on the fuel filter on the bottom open since you always regularly want to drain that anyway. What is the draw back? Thx
+Sam Kwak The drawback would be you would always have fuel running out! That wasn't just water coming out when he drained it, that was mostly fuel. The only reason it stops flowing is because it runs out of pressure. As soon as you start the truck pressure would build and fuel will flow out of the water separator drain.
08 F350 6.4 Top filter cap leaks had o-ring replaced and torqued to 20 lbs. Ran good for a little over a month and started leaking again?? Any suggestions on how to fix this ongoing problem? Thank you sir.
Is the cap OEM or aftermarket? Lube the o-ring a bit before you put it on? Is the cap cracked? I had some aftermarket cap previous owner put in (Napa I think) on my 7.3l that didn't fit well and it took some fiddling to get it on right... Changed it to an OEM when I had the chance and no more leaks.
Hey ron we need your help man i have a 2008 f450 with the 6.4 engine, has the code p2291 and the low oressure fuel pump works with acceptable pressure but is not building fuel pressure any ideas
I don't know about the right way to pull the valve. It takes a. Expensive tool. I use a seal puller and pry bar. I can show that. Some things like that or fan clutch I don't show because people out there look for faults. I try not to give them too many opportunities to tell me how wrong I am.
It will vary. make sure there isn't any pressure. Maybe just to be sure remove then reinstall the fuel cap. The messy part is it runs down the frame rail. draining the water off first helps. If it doesn't do something weird and start siphoning then I would say maybe a pint to a quart.
Is there some reason why you don't snap the lower filter into the cap like you do with the upper filter? I've done mine both ways and it seems like snapping the filter into the cap might be required to make certain that the tab and bleed hole end up pointing up. When it is snapped in, the filter turns with the cap until it hits a stop with the tab pointing up. At that point, the filter stops turning as I run the cap the rest of the way down.
Hey Ron, did my filters today, primed it about 8x fired up then died a few sec later. Cranked it and it was cranking by itself for a few sec but it did start immediately after. Ever have a 6.4 do that?
They removed the sensor to those lights. I've never had a single light on for mine. There was some issues in the 6.0 with the design and it was always setting off the sensor. They simply removed the sensor. Check out the valve assembly on the lower fuel filter where it should be. It's not there.
Why they put the wiring harness in front of the cap is beyond me. If these educated idiots had to work on them things might change. Very helpful video. Thank you.
