It may look very similar to the AK-47, but it's definitely NOT a Kalashnikov! Brownells Gun Tech and resident firearm historian Keith Ford tells us about one of his favorite rifles, the Czech VZ 58. Developed during the 1950s by Česká Zbrojovka (CZ), the VZ 58 assault rifle was in production from 1959 to 1984 and served with the Czechoslovakian military - now the separate Slovak and Czech Republic armies - almost until the present day. While it's chambered for the same 7.62x39mm round, the VZ 58's short-stroke piston operating system is entirely different from the AK's. Keith explains these differences and tells us about the many virtues of the VZ 58. Weighing 1.5 lbs. less than the AK, it's more maneuverable and more ergonomic, so it's easier to control and more pleasant shoot, too.
