The Marathon Government Search and Rescue dive watch defines the functional tool watch category for me. Developed specifically to satisfy government contracts for military bodies like the US Marine Corps, there is a lot to like in the GSAR if you want a rugged, no nonsense, timepiece.

Great review! I was looking for a durable daily watch which wasn’t just a cheap ‘beater’. As I explored various Japanese and Swiss powered diver watches, I came across the Marathon MSAR, the version of this watch for smaller wrists. What a surprise to discover it’s Canadian heritage as well (I’m Canadian). Thank you for doing a very nice review. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.

I’m booking my first holiday to Canada so am looking for a Canadian holiday watch (any excuse for us watch geeks 😄). I’m stuck between a Halios Universa which I like but is hard to get, a Marathon or a cheap Momentum…. The marathon here is the most expensive but had the maple leaf… decisions decisions😄

Love the watch, and as a watch collector I think is one of the best diver designs above all. But as you said about the luminescent I was a little deceptioned too, cause I have watches 40 years old and even being kept for years in a drawer they still glow and took my GSAR after a couple of years without use and now it doesn't glow anymore. But still one of the best divers design without the necessity of a weird or very huge desing as many of new micro brands.

@hodlwise2470 Год назад
The half-life of tritium is 12 years. They're often used in iron sights on handguns, and even those will start to dim after about 3-5 years. The tritium they use most likely doesn't come directly from the manufacturing process directly into the watch, that tritium could already be a few years old before it's put into the watch. Who knows. Anyway, I'm sure you can get it serviced if you inquire. There is no deception if you understand what you're buying in the first place lol. As soon as I read tritium I knew it wouldn't glow after X amount of time has passed. Guess what...I'm still about to buy it lol. Edit: maybe there is some deception LOL. Description says "TRITIUM GAS TUBES: Self illuminated 24/7 tritium gas tubes for up to 25 years." Yeah that's bullshit lol. It's 2x the half-life of tritium rofl.

Please do, I'm very interested in the sizing too... that was one of the things I liked, but was a bit nervous about, with the MSAR 👍
@JLUnit416
@JLUnit416 3 года назад
So, I've only had it for a day, so take it for what it's worth, but I'm actually surprised how quickly I've acclimated to its size; my 40mm Hamilton looked huge this morning. The one thing I'll say, is that the thickness seems disproportionate to the width and I imagine the proportions balance better on the GSAR. But happy with it so far. I have approximately 7 inch wrists, for reference. Marathon MSAR imgur.com/gallery/DthjeIj
@JakeReevesVideo
@JakeReevesVideo 3 года назад
Nice 👍 ya, I think you're right about the height to width aspect being more balanced on the GSAR and JSAR. Just a function of the limitations on making it slimmer, but it looks good 👍

Great review Jake . I’ve been doing a lot of research into this watch and found your comments the most helpful. Thanks ! Favor, can you clarify for me , is the movement on your watch mechanical or automatic? I was on the website and none of GSAR look to be “mechanical “… perhaps I misunderstand movement.🥴. Thanks again Jake .
@JakeReevesVideo
@JakeReevesVideo 2 года назад
Hi Rob, I’m happy to hear you liked the video - Thanks! Automatic is a type of mechanical movement that will “automatically” wind the movement based on your hand moving throughout the day. The alternative would be a quartz movement, which is powered by a battery. I hope this helps 👍

Im just curious, i just purchased this watch and was wondering how much trouble it is to replace the band and is there a lug tool you would reccomend? Thanks.
@JakeReevesVideo
@JakeReevesVideo 3 года назад
First off, congrats! I really like the watch and hope you're happy with it as well. I have a few really basic lug tools that came with some buckles I bought for making my own straps, but I also bought the $15 Archer lug tool on Amazon - I broke the first one and they were nice enough to send a replacement, but I find it difficult to recommend that one since I did break it. If you can find one for like $30 then the quality is probably going to be better. I think there is one that Teddy Baldassarre usually recommends (look up his channel on RU-vid).

@JakeReevesVideo

Tough call. I’ve never had issues with my black dial in terms of visibility, but I believe the white one was specifically designed to improve visibility is white snowy outings. T25, T100, and T-Swiss Made-T refer to the total radioactivity in the timepiece; it is a label that satisfies regulatory requirements from the NRC and has no relation to brightness of individual GTLS tubes. There is no such thing as a T25 tube or a T100 tube.

Hi Jake great review! I'd love to buy one but do you recommend automatic or quartz variant?
@JakeReevesVideo
@JakeReevesVideo 2 года назад
I chose the automatic because I'm a sucker for a mechanical watch... I love knowing that the watch is keeping time through gears and springs. However, the quarts will be less daily upkeep because you'll never have to make sure the spring is wound. Really depends on your lifestyle and preference. Good luck with the decision 👍

Oh, the 41 will be fine. I have a slightly smaller wrist and it fits me well. I was torn between the 2 as well, but could only get the maple version in the 41, so I went for it. And when it arrived, I was surprised at how 'small' it was after seeing so many reviewers talking about the size of it, but they are really talking about thickness, not circumference. I think you would be fine with either, but the 41 would look more 'standard'. Good luck with your decision!

First of all, The movement in this watch is a Selitta SW200 not an ETA2824. Secondly, you can set the date whenever you want on this watch because the calendar mechanism allows to do so. The calendar rotation wheel has a spring finger which is a security for setting the date between 00:00 and 01:00.

Perhaps you have a newer (or older) version. But mine is definitely an ETA 2824.2. I've spoken with then engineers at Marathon about it. I believe in 2021 they switched to an in-house movement (the M2).

So far I'm not impressed with mine. The clasp exploded on my first day and within under a week I dropped it on the case back and all the indices fell off. Now I have to send it to be serviced by Marathon. I'm going to update this when this is all over. So far I'm extremely unhappy with the product and I dont understand how its achieved such a rugged perception if I cant even drop it. I bet I can drop my trench watch from 1905 and itll survive but this thing is so heavy and apparently not constructed as well as you watch guys think.
