The nitrogen oxide sensor, also referred to as the NOx sensor, consists of a sensor and the associated control unit. The two parts cannot be separated. The control unit of the nitrogen oxide sensor, communicates with the engine management system across a CAN network, or controller area network.
In early GDI systems, the NOx sensor didn't necessarily have a control box attached to it. However, when it comes to NOx sensors, there are very few manufacturers dedicated to making them. Most NOx sensors are made by NGK Continental, with NGK making the sensor itself and Continental doing the electronic control module. This sensor is also called the Uni-NOx sensor by V D O for European cars.
The NOx sensor, as mentioned before, is sold as a stand alone unit with the control box attached to the sensor. These are a matched pair; and the control box or module is pre-programmed with the characteristics of that particular NOx sensor. The sensor and box does the following: ....
