@@BlackPegasusRaps Listen to the Genesis album TRICK OF THE TAIL... and the song by that title. But if you want to go off on a major tangent in music.. song title In the Year 2525 from the 60's that made some startling predictions that appear to be coming true today
@@RobynHurley-zp9sh Same. Goosebumps EVERY time. And I grew up with it, have prob listened to it 200 times, watched the live version 50 or 60 times. IT DOES NOT get old!!!
Phil Collins' song "In the Air Tonight" is about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980. Collins wrote the song in 1981 for his debut solo album, Face Value, and released it as the lead single. The song's dark lyrics and moody drums reflect Collins' emotions, but he has said that the song's content doesn't represent anything specific. In a 2016 interview, Collins said, "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration".
I saw an interview with Phil and they asked him what the song was about. That's what he said it was. I remember growing up when this song first came out. The story at the time was Phil was watching a guy who just sat there while a guy was drowning and didn't help. Later at his concert he saw the guy in the front row and this was what the song was about. It wasn't, but you know how things go around.
@@martinarscott3524 Why would he fabricate that kind of meaning? Just say it's what poped out of my head one evening. Why go into detail about a relationship if that's not what is was about. I read the lyrics again and what he said "its about the anger, despair, and frustration Collins felt after divorcing his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli, in 1980" sounds pretty legit to me. Drinking will do a lot with someone's psyche. I never wrote any songs but did do drugs in the '70s and had some wild stories. Just saying.
Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, and Mike Rutherford were all in Genesis. All are talented. Gabriel left first to do a solo career, and Phil stepped up as new lead singer.
Don't forget Tony Banks on keyboards. All four of them have done solo work. Genesis started out with just those 4. But their biggest success was after Peter Gabriel left with the album "Invisible Touch". I saw them on that tour and Phil Collins did a bit like the beginning of this video in that concert. It was cool. Also check out the video for Invisible Touch. It's cute. My favorite was/is Take Me Home. Love the song and the video. Also he was an actor and appears during the 80's on Miami Vice a few times. He is retired now as he injured his back and can no longer tour.
This song doesn't even feel like it was written. This song feels like it was manifested into existence from him diving into the deepest and darkest part of his soul in order to have an honest conversation with the monster he's been hiding from his entire life. I've gone back to this song during the worst moments in my life and it's given me the strength I've needed to survive.
Many rock artists hated Phil Collins. Why? The man was a hit maker. Phil has more hit songs than any artist. After retiring he said he was so absorbed in writing songs he MISSED LIFE.
I remember being stuck in Dallas traffic on a hot summer afternoon and this song came on the radio. Somebody put an arm out their window and yelled turn it up... and we did!!!
Not to be overlooked is the man with the long white beard, playing bass, looks like a wizard - Leland Sklar, another music legend, prolific, contributing to at least 2,600 albums by various artists . Leland has a YT channel worth checking out - he often plays his bass parts along with recorded music for which he was the bassist originally. He has talked about his bass guitars, some also legends with stories of their own. Lovely man, currently a member of The Immediate Family composed of members of the studio group The Section (1970's). OK, I'll shut up now.
I have watched this performance so many times and I get goosebumps every time he starts playing the drums. Phil Collins was the drummer for the band Genesis, they formed in Charterhouse School, Surrey, England in 1967. Phil Collins joined the band in 1970 and when Peter Gabriel, the frontman left in 1975, Collins took over lead vocals. Yes, I've read that Collins wrote this song after he and his first wife Andrea Bertorelli divorced, and the singer was haunted by the emotions that came rolling in afterward.
Phil was going through a divorce from his wife who he caught cheating on him with another dude. He wrote this song as a kind of therapy from the whole emotional situation that he was going through at the time. Unfortunately Phil has had some physical health issues recently and he is not able to perform playing the drums but his son is a great drummer and he now plays father whenever he has a performance. Phil's voice has never change one tiny bit.
But he had ready been unfaithful while on tour. No one ever mentions that fact. And the wife he had after that, he dumped by fax as he was having an affair with another woman. He’s not Mr Innocent!!
Phil Collins claims he has “no idea” what any of the words of "In The Air Tonight" mean. According to Phil; “Obviously, having my wife leave me, and losing my two little ones, there was anger, bitterness, and hurt. Those emotions are in the song, but in an abstract way. I have no idea what 'coming in the air tonight' means-apart from an impending darkness, possibly.” Without any initial preparation, Collins had recorded himself singing freestyle to pour out his intense feelings of distress and heartbreak following his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. After listening back to these ad-libbed vocals, Collins reportedly wrote the lyrics down on a piece of stationery belonging to the interior decorator he says his wife left him for. Virtually all of the lyrics he wrote down made the finished version of “In the Air Tonight". The song gained significant popularity after Phil Collins performed it on the British program "Top of the Pops", where he famously brought a can of paint and a brush to symbolise his ex-wife's relationship with the interior decorator. Bertorelli has since disputed this claim, insisting that Collins's "short fuse and preference for arguing" were the real reasons for the divorce. Either way, it was an acrimonious split, and that filters into the sound of “In the Air Tonight.” The opening lines of "In The Ait Tonight" resonate with longing and anticipation: I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord And I’ve been waiting for this moment, for all my life, oh lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight, oh lord, oh lord I feel that these lines convey a sense of urgency and a longing for resolution, mirroring Collins’ own emotional journey.
I got from it from the words was catching, even walking in on a CHEATING situation after suspicions and past situations that lead finally up to a YOUR CAUGHT MOMENT. That is what I got long after listening to the words when you do not always go deeper into words when you are just into music and what is on radio of the past.
Phil was in the middle of a very messy divorce, he knows (and so do we) exactly what this song is about… another one that surfaced from him and shows the anger is “I Don’t Care Anymore”.
This song took off like a rocket when it was used as the backing track in a HUGE scene in the 1984 premiere episode of Miami Vice! Regardless of what Phil’s meaning was when he wrote the song, that moment in that specific episode will always define what this song means to me!
Phil Collins plays many instruments. He is amazing live. I saw him years ago. The man is amazingly talented. This was my favorite artist I've ever seen live!!
I love when you share your discoveries with others…especially the youngins’😊 He was the drummer & when Peter Gabriel left Genesis, Phil became lead singer also-but kept drumming!! I think the moment he’s waiting for is facing down the other man or his wife or both of them. “If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand”
I read about Phil and his skill and devotion to music. I knew he was popular of course. This specific clip though is one of the best live performances I can say I have ever watched. If anything this is worth study to understand exactly how to rile a crowd. And yeah. Divorce. His own. I think some of the lyrics are describing how he felt during all that, like "waited for this moment all my life". Obviously he did not wait since birth to part ways with this person. It was just such a raw thing that it felt that way.
Phil Collins has explained that "In the Air Tonight" was written during a particularly turbulent period in his life, specifically his divorce from his first wife, Andrea Bertorelli. He has stated that the song's lyrics are not based on any specific event or story but rather reflect his feelings of anger, frustration, and heartbreak at the time. Collins has emphasized that the song's mysterious and haunting lyrics came from his emotional state during the divorce rather than any literal experience or incident.
Collins wrote the song amid the grief he felt after divorcing his first wife Andrea Bertorelli in 1980. In a 2016 interview, Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."
I love that!! If he's not already taking piano lessons, PLEASE get him started~ the best foundation for musical proficiency, before taking up any other instrument. 💯 God Bless!
I’m 70 and have always said I would run away with Phil if he asked me to!! Wouldn’t pack a bag or even a toothbrush…just “Let’s go!!” We could be the old farts we are together. Such a talent. Everything he does is gold.
The hook is when he runs into the guy screwing he's wife He says i know what you did but you don't know who i am So wipe the sm8le off your face He walked in on his wife and the guy going at it But they didn't hear him and he backed out and left Rang lawyer to start divorce proceedings Kicked he's wife out and they had prenuptial with time limit So he didn't have to pay her either and never spoke to her again All done by lawyers and wrote the song so she knows why He did a interview on it The reason he sings the song all the time is to release the anger that builds up in him He's never forgotten and carries it with him all the time so its a copping mechanism for him So you are both right in parts To G seem a nice young lad well mannered hope he gets heaps of success in he's life path of choice He's parents must be happy with how he seems to have turned out thoughtful young man Cheers guys 🦘🇦🇺👍
I have listened to Phil for so many decades now....the man can literally go from one instrument to another with out missing a beat...trumpet' to string' to piano too whatever...true musical genius there....now with that said...how i was introduced to this song was through a show called Miami Vice...that show was so crazy good it is scary...and that song if a song can match a show perfectly it matched it! Love it! I also loved genesis as well....dude is a beast!
The amazing artists of my youth - the 60's & 70's! Phil Collins is one of the finest drummers of the 60's & 70's . . . Culminating as Genesis - Peter Gabriel.
Love Phil Collins voice & music which was a big part of my youth. It was a great time in the 70’s & 80’s for music & boy were we spoiled. Love your reactions & also watching you passing on the experience to a new comer & educating them with what you have learned about the artists. Thanks for sharing.
You could do Phil Collins every day and I would never tire of watching . Ive watched this entire Paris concert so many times I've lost count. I'd love to see your reaction to Take Me Home at the end of this concert. Phil and Chester start out on the drums and It's pretty epic IMO. And the crowd at the end makes it even more so.. More please❤🎉
I saw Genesis in 1974 at the Indianapolis Convo Center, Peter Gabriel singing and Phil Collin’s on drums. I was 14, there were about 500 people there. ❤😊
Collins said of the song's lyrics: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration." For a long time people thought the song was about a murder Phil Collins witnessed. That's just an urban legend ..
I remember in the early days of social media, on either FB or MySpace, there was a woman in my feed whose posts were a repeated refrain of something like "I dislike Phil Collins, and his music is following me everywhere", and she would list the song name and the store whose background muzak system had played it that day while she was out and about. She has long since dropped off my radar, but for a while there in the 90's and early 00's Phil was positively ubiquitous...you COUDN'T get away from his music!
I say yes to more Phil Collins. I said the same for the Eagles, Billy Joel, Bob seager.I just like the the show, the guests and the reactions. Keep on keeping on brother. G'day from Australia 🇦🇺
You should react to "Mama" next, also Phil Collins but such a great song and a little eerie at times.. but it's my second favorite after this one.. Love from Belgium
Lifelong Genesis fan. Phil is an icon in drumming history. I think they use this tune on Monday Night Football opening theme. Phil is one of the three most richest music stars ever. He sold a lot of records. With Genesis and his Solo albums.
Phil Collins also wrote songs on the soundtrack for Disney’s Tarzan including the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song “ You’ll be in my heart”. He also played the drums for the song Trashing the Camp. He is awesome!
I love to watch your reactions to the music that we love so much, that made us who we are,but I also love watching you share the fantastic music that you have discovered with young people. Its people like you who will insure these truly great artists legacies never die.
This is Phil Collins first solo single after all the great Genisis years. I remember it from Miami Vice a few years later, which was revolutionary at the time for being the first TV show to use original artist soundtracks over covers done by others, which was much less expensive expensive for TV shows to use. It was also in the romance thriller movie Against All Odds for the sex scene in a cave, so @GFM17 got the lust vibes right, too. Please bring him back for other songs!
“Against All Odds” (with Phil on piano) is on my top 10 ever list. I also love his “Call Me Al” video, featuring Chevy Chase. Comedic video with an awesome song. I laugh every time. ✌️❤️
Every time I watch this, when the drums are rising, before he touches them I get goosebumps and then he starts and goosebumps get bigger. Yes! Mike and the Mechanics was 3rd artist from Genesis.
"In the Air Tonight" is a mesmerizing song! In addition to the chilly synths, there are harsh, distorted chords-which Phil Collins liked to an “electric razor”-from guitarist Daryl Stuermer. And then there’s the iconic drum fill, which comes in quite late, just as the tension of the song reaches a breaking point. It helped that Collins cut the track with producer Hugh Padgham, a proven partner in creating mammoth drum sounds. While working on Peter Gabriel’s self-titled 1979 album, Collins and Padgham discovered that Phil’s drums sounded incredible when recorded through the microphone that engineers used to converse with musicians on the other side of the studio glass. Such mics utilize heavy compression, which makes loud sounds quiet and quiet sounds loud. Padgham also ran the drums through a “noise gate,” which artificially cuts off recorded sounds right after they start. So, "gated reverb" was born; the drum effect that would power “In the Air Tonight” and define pop music in the ’80s.
Im 60, a drummer, and have been following Phil his entire life amd mine. I've played every song known to man and all his music to a million times. I've always known and been told when this song came out what the meaning was, and it wasn't devorce. I always heard Phil had a twin brother that drownd when they were young boys and didn't know how to swim to save his broher who also didn't know how to swim. They was a man close enough, watching, that Phil believed could had helped save his brother, but didn't even try or get involved. The song says, i saw with my own two eyes and so much more of course, but relisten to the 😊ye song with that in mind and it will blow ur mind!!
Genesis - "mama" - live in 1990 oder 1987 - Phil Collins is/was the second vocalist of Genesis. There is many songs where his performance really shines. Mama is a song that was published when Genesis changed to much more pop sound in the early 80s. But it still has some weird art vibes in it. Maybe you try it out at some time.
He's been my idol since 1982 when I was in high school. I've collected all the albums and singles since Phil Collins joined Genesis. I really miss those wonderful years.
This song is what you need/want it to be personally. For myself it was my expression of the anger and unable to stop my stepfather drinking and the abuse that followed
I love it when the younger generations become slack-jawed when listening to the awesome music of a lot of our lives. In an interview Phil Collins stated that he wrote this while going through his first divorce. He was angry, hurt and a little vengeful in the lyrics. "If you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand.." I think that pretty much sums up how he was feeling at the time. If you like this performance you should check out "Mama' he did with Genesis. Also FYI the man is a musical genius. He scored, wrote lyrics and performed for the Disney movie "Tarzan' The lyrics and music are beautiful I would sing them to my children when they were little.
