THe character Jaime Lannister sneers at this assumed nobility and honor. JAime lives his life as he is perceived: a privileged son of a great lord, an elite swordsman, a man who sees no value in honor, an oath breaker who laughs at the term Kingslayer. Jaime does his best to live up to the awful reputations, with arrogance and pride.
Anything claimed against Jaime he can use as his mask, his shield, he protects himself with the worlds judgement. Yes he killed the king, yes he broke his vows, and yes he’s got no shame. Or at least that’s what he’d like everyone to think.
“The things we do for love” when stated by a man we would all condemn based on the information available to us at this point - at first this statement may ring hollow, but when we learn more of Jaime later on, you can see that the things Jaime does for love, has truly been what holds his life hostage in many ways. We’ll come back to this here shortly.
But for now lets take a look at Jaime’s reputation as it follows him deeper into the story.

Another point I love about Jaime is the subtle, one-way relationship he has with Ned. Jaime did somewhat respect Ned, as both a decent fighter and an honorable man. The unfair and sadistic execution of Ned's brother and father by the mad king was a traumatic experience to Jaime. And he did think that he was making justice for this, among other things of course, when he killed the mad king. But Ned despised Jaime all the same. This is very interesting for both characters, as it puts them both in a grey area. Jaime starts as very "black", and we see more and more "white" touches in his shade of grey. Ned starts as very "white", but this shows that his unbending honor leads to grossly oversimplifying and misjudging someone, which is a big "black" stain in his shade of grey. Though the two characters barely interact, the existence of Jaime also makes Ned a much deeper character that just "the perfect good guy".

Ned seemed to have beaten Arthur Dayne. That was a personal hero of Jamie's. A lot of the tension between them was because Jamie couldn't claim to be the best living swordsman while Ned was alive. If you want to be the man, you have to Beat the man!

I always love the hypocrisy of the way the Kingsguard are viewed compared to Jaime. Men like Gerold Hightower were legends and heroes despite actively silencing the disgust of a young Jaime as he watched Eddard's family cruelly tortured and murdered by a mad man. Similarly, Jonothor Darry, like Hightower, comfortably sat by and allowed Rhaella Targaryen to be raped and harmed by Aerys and even encouraged Jaime out of helping her ('we are sworn to defend her, but not from him'). That's why it is so heart-warming when Jaime does the total opposite and instructs Trant to come to him should Tommen begin pushing for cruelty and spite.

Reminded me so much of Judge Gabranth from Final Fantasy XII or Georg Prime from Suikoden V. When you look back Jaime was always telling the truth and was really only insulting when he was insulted. I couldn't agree more! This is one of the BEST written characters ever, in my opinion. He is what I like to call a "no-win-situation" character. Where there is never a choice of good or bad, but only bad or bad, bad or worse, or good (that will turn out VERY bad) or bad... This character is very realistic too. Jaime Lannister is essentially the same character is Ned Stark, albeit given only awful extremely difficult, no-win-situation choices. Many times he has no choice even. Like the family he's been born into... Jaime Lannister reminds me of Hamlet. A man trying to do the right thing, be good, be honorable, but thrust into a scenario where to do good one must do bad, and to get justice one must do wrongs. He cannot choose who he loves either. His heart chose Cersei. It's all just a RAW deal, and it's brilliant!! Even as the show decided to go about ending his story arch, I liked. Jaime is give one final no-win-situation, to go to be with not only the love of his life, mother of his children, and queen, but one of the last members of his family; when they are in their most dire circumstances in need of support the most... His choice is either to not go (and thusly live forever in guilt & shame with a broken heart, forsaking not only Cersei, but also the life of his last unborn child with the woman he was born to love) or he could go to King's Landing to be with Cersei when the city inevitably falls and try to do what he can to try to save what matters most to him, as well as potentially lessen the overall bloodshed (knowing that Cersei is certainly doomed, King's Landing WILL fall, and most likely he will die)... The perfect ending to this amazing "no-win-situation character" in my mind... "The things I do for love..." Although, how Jaime and Cersei actually perished in the show I really did not like one bit, and thought was poorly executed and stale dramatically for 2 such memorable, powerful, essential, and well-crafted characters that we followed for SO long in ASOIF.... Just my thoughts... LOVED this video! Good stuff!

Apparently, it never occurred to you Jaime could refrain from sex with Cersei in a crowded unknown castle. Instead, he chose to satisfy his sexual desire knowing perfectly well it would be fatal if a servant or a maid sees them. So, he put his sexual desire above his own life, Cersei's life and his children's lives. And since he's had this incest for many years it's implied Bran wasn't the first random person to see them and be killed by Jaime.

@@darrylseymour Seriously? It's a risk for anyone who sees them doing it. Jaime is shown as a savior of smallfolk yet he doesn't care that he occasionally need to kill one or two servants just because it's a medieval castle for god's sake, it crawls with servants, and I'd emphasize again, there's a big chance Jaime had killed off witnesses before Bran. He says "Things I do for love" plural. At least in Bran's case he hesitated cause realized the witness was highborn. If it was a servant, Jaime wouldn't think twice. In his pre-amputation chapters he thinks he and Cersei are demi-gods like Targaryens. Such an attitude towards smallfolk is typical of any medieval highborn people, but Jaime felt it ten times stronger. He would put himself high above any other lord. And remember that line? "If Cersei wanted to kill someone, she wouldn't send a catspaw, she'd send me". Here we are, through the years Jaime had likely already killed a number of witnesses and yet he kept setting people up again and again.

Jaime’s hand was not “senselessly” cut off. It was done for a political purpose. Vargo Hoat had recently betrayed Tywin and switched to Roose Bolton’s side. Roose is about to betray the Starks and switch to Tywin’s side. Hoat can’t follow Roose to Tywin’s side after betraying him. Jaime’s hand is cut off to make it harder for Roose to switch sides, as Roose may be blamed for the maiming. This is why Roose has the conversation with Jaime at Harrenhall. Roose essentially offers to send Jaime along to King’s Landing so long as Jaime agrees not to blame Roose to Tywin.

In the books, Jaime follows the mad king on his throne after killing Rossart, grabs him by his hair and slits his throat before severing is spine with a thrust of his sword. I think this is a pretty meaningful detail to highlight that, though he is breaking his oath, the kid rushes face first against the monster that ruined what had always been his biggest dream and showed him the true evil that some men are capable to commit. In the show, where Ned says that the kinglsayer stabbed Aerys in the back, seems like Jaime is slimier than he actually his, at least for me. Jaime was manipulated by Cersei, into leaving his rightful place as Tywin’s heir, and completely broken by watching how his king, to whom he he had sworn an oath, treating everyone around him like insects undeserving of the basics human rights… and, maybe worst, observe his heroes enable the rapes of the queen and every horrible act that Aerys’ ordered. He was a kid, he was alone, he was lost, he was scared and, when everything crumbled, he still would’ve fought against his father’s men to protect the crown… until Aerys’ stepped over the line by ranting about blowing up half a million people with that psycho of his Hand. I really like Jaime, he’s my favourite character in the series and in the books… and I think that deserves a good ending, at least one that feels like a good ending in his eyes: with his honour restored.

@damion19967

Best character undeniable. What makes a great character is growth, loss, forgiveness, and rebirth. Either as a good or bad guy, which changes by the end. We need to see the rise or fall as more of a choice rather than forced upon. Jamie, at the start, was a high born nieve knight with a focus on family rather than duty, honor, and cause. But after he was imprisoned, he started seeing his family and the war as well as his guilt clearly. When he travels with a woman of the highest level and with great honor, he falls in love with someone other than his sister. Seeing how wrong he was thinking, he'd never find someone better. He kept his mouth shut and buried all his pain to make the bad guy we knew at the start. When learning, he didn't have a choice but to kill the Mad King. Not for family or duty. But to save millions, it wasn't for Tywin, wasn't for Cersey. It's his duty to protect all people not just do as told. But nobody knew. And he took the roll of king slayer. With the truth never known. In my eyes Cersey is the one that manipulates the incest, forces it, and Jamie has to, rather then want too. And never knew what love was cause Cersey took that from him. He might have fallen for the 16 years and grew to love it. But never wanted it. But only knew it. So kept doing it. Kept the guilt. And once he finds a path in Breann to be a knew. It always baffled me that there wasnt a single prominent character (more realistically many characters) that dont consider Jaimee dishonorable. Like Aeris literally planned to take a dragonfire bath himself by the end of the afternoon. Like i can get behind just dogging him for any reason but the whole realm seems to hate Jaimee for this when i feel even these honorable people should be able to understand was this was an objectively good deed.

@juanig4198
@juanig4198 2 месяца назад
I don't think tywin is the best written ,the books and the show give him a lot of undeserved reputation,for example he should be regarded as much as a late lord like walder frey but he doesn't,he faced no consequences for eliminating two tax paying families from the crown,and while the red wedding did won him the war on a short term this was the worst possible move for the legacy and position of his family in the future
@Jem1381
@Jem1381 2 месяца назад
@@juanig4198 yes but youre missing WHY Tywin can get away with what the Freys cant - 1) The Freys are a relatively new house and therefore none of them have the respect of the lords and 2) Tywin obliterated everyone who wronged him or the Lannisters in any way, he's the most powerful man in Westeros and therefore can get away with more than any other lord would - he is a key piece of the Game of Thrones, and therefore he cant be touched, anyone caught speaking ill of the Lannisters when they are on the throne would be executed, look at how Vaemond died after speaking ill of the Targaryens, granted the Kingsguard in Tywin's day was nowhere near the caliber of even King Aerys II's Kingsguard but they still are willing to beat Sansa at Joffrey's command so i wouldnt put it past them to execute anyone who they are commanded to execute - Cersei and Tywin dont take threats, real or percieved, lightly and will resort to murder at any given opportunity - the reasons you listed actually make Tywin a better written character, not a worse one

I think it’s safe to say that the majority of the fanbase unequivocally didn’t care much for Jaime early on. Jaime was the most amazing character up until season four or maybe five IMO. He was at his very peak as a character during the time he was captured. I know he got his hand cut off, but he was a husk of a person after all that shit happened. He was pretty much useless and his name and presence no longer commanded fear or respect from anyone at all. We never even got to see him fucking people up with his sword, so if you haven't read the books I could see how people might have felt underwhelmed when seeing him in action. I actually haven't read them personally, but I can't help but feel that the show did him very dirty (especially in season eight).

The ending we all want: ›final battle of humanity vs the dead ›Bran is warged into the past, being protected by Jaime and Brienne >white walker stabs Brienne with her own sword, she lays on the ground dying ›cut to young Jaime kneeling, with Aerys Targaryean saying "In the name of the Warrior, I charge you to be brave..." > Jaime kills the WW, and after a brief moment of grief, draws the sword from Brienne, now aflame >cut to Aerys: "Do you swear to defend the innocent and the helpless, in the name of the Seven?" "I swear it" >audio of Jaime and Brienne's parting plays as Jaime looks around >"They say the best swords have names. Any ideas?" ›Night King appears and stares at Bran, his ultimate target V"Oathkeeper." > Jaime steps in between them, laughing somberly >"Do you know what they call me?" >as Azor Ahai walks toward the Night King, all that can be heard is a cacophony of voices from past seasons cursing: > "Kingslayer.. Is he good? He has such a long list of crimes and flaws that you could say it's having Hitler or Stalin and letting them say "I want to become better". Does a character just becomes good because he is bad and wants to become good? Obviously we all understand the reasons to become good as we all think about ourselves as good. I think that Jamie has way too much plot armor to be considered good character. He has all the money one can imagine (really as Tywins money never runs out even when lending from the Iron Bank) and all the skills. Ohh and the looks. He starts his journey without flaws. Except...well the first step of his journey is a flaw. But not by some birth defects like bad teeth, he has sex with his sister. His decision. He murders people left and right. Also all his decisions. In the character is Martins own disbelieve in honor and the pessimistic views on society in general involved but that doesn't makes Jamie good. But the character...it's just the boring best swordsmen in the world with also the most money and best equipment. Ohh and the famous name so he never had to prove himself in life. He's a Marie Sue character. Just the best at everything and the youngest who got any achievement in life. He could be the Kirk in Mirror Universe. Is that good? I don't think so.

Honestly whatever you said could be applied for any character seeking redemption Also Hitler and Stalin did way worse than whatever Jaime The main with redemption arc characters is that they know they cant redeem themselves but still do good things because actually want to do good and not be what they used to be Jaime even with all Tywin's money cant find happiness due to amount guilt he feels, like no amount money can make someone over come the guilt of pushing a child of a certain height which could've killed him Also he cant persue a relationship especially after he was in an incestuous relationship with his sister who treated him as toy more than a lover, the amount of trauma from could some struggle finding another suitable partner Plus he literally regrets it and lets cersie be a prisoner of that cult On top of the he was forced to kill people under the Mad king, he literally hated serving Aryes and was traumatized with the way he executed people And he lost his hand, after being labelled as the king slayer one of his few comforts was that he was one of the best knights in the seven kingdoms and even that is taken away from him He is a very well written character, just re read the books or even watch the video
