I will say…I did a Strahd gothic horror campaign where the DM was VERY strict with classes and races, and we all had to play as humans. It ended up being one of the most immersive and coolest campaigns I’ve ever been a part of. Then again I also played another strahd campaign where we were complete wacky weirdos, attended a wedding for rats, had a fashion show in Vallaki, got absolutely blazed on an in game drug and pulled about a dozen cards from the deck of many things, hilarity ensued. so through that I became a fan of both approaches, not just the “anything goes” direction

It just goes to show how much having a good DM can make a difference. Sometimes if the restrictions make sense and are understood going in, a good DM can make them work as part of the game world, drawing the players even more in. Having a few restrictions isn't necessarily a bad thing, so long as you're reasonable about them and don't go overboard with limiting your players too much.

i think the dragon example is a great showcasing of a gigachad dm that shows care for the players concern and tries to accommodate. HOWEVER it's perfectly valid as a DM to say no to something that requires that much prep work and reworking, as the DM you're also a player, your concerns around the narrative matter and if you don't want to run the game with someone playing a character that disrupts that story you're perfectly within your rights to say no to that.

Gigachad DM is people pleasing DM, which is perfectly fine, but not every DM has to accommodate everything you wanna do, Some DMs (Like me) love worldbuilding and create cohesive worlds and narratives. So ive gotten used to saying no to players wanting to play characters that wouldnt fit the world or helping alter them to fit
@SpiderboyN2Jesus
@SpiderboyN2Jesus 3 месяца назад
Yeah, I like to work with my players, rather than saying outright "no", but still. For the dragon example, I would probably counter with "Hmm, an adult dragon is really powerful; what if you play a young/'baby' red dragon who can level up and grow into an adult dragon throughout the campaign?" or something like that.
@fnhatic6694
@fnhatic6694 3 месяца назад
Ultimately the question of weird shit like playing a red dragon comes down to how much is this going to benefit everyone else including the GM, and how much is just because you're player is a weirdo furry with a dragon fetish.
@Jessie_Helms
@Jessie_Helms 2 месяца назад
Great example is that in my world "dwarves don't exist" (they were all slaughtered by dragonborn and dragons 3.5K years ago). I had a player who _really_ wanted to play a totem barbarian dwarf, so instead he's "the most jacked halfing you've ever seen" and is _mechanically_ a dwarf while canonically a halfling. Hell, if someone gave a good reasoning as to why a race in D&D fit their character best there's not too many I wouldn't allow to be reflavored as something else (maybe not allowing a goliath with goblin stats, for example. Plasmoids and Changelings are pretty strictly only those things too).

I've always seen the story as what the dice and the rules end up telling. Intervention via the DM just saying what happened always seems cheap to me.
@Alwayz114
@Alwayz114 4 месяца назад
imo its a mix of both. Dice are a great tool to add unexpected results or to take people outside of their comfort zone, but arguably there are times when someone deserves a win outside of chance. All their planning, all their care, everything... and failing due to a bad roll? That sometimes just straight up feels shitty and can ruin the fun. At the end of the day, it's whatever makes the best story with the most fun (for those players at that given table, etc etc etc)@@TheyCallMeCarg

You see this right here. This is an excellent example of one of the biggest divides in the hobby that started with Dragonlance. I refer to it as the divide between. Narrative vs Emergent story. Narrative games (the initial comment) tend to lean more on predetermined story, and tend to view the game as a method of telling a story, and a game second. Emergent games (the first reply) tend more towards sandbox style games. Particularly good for West-Marshs, and tend to view the game as a game first, with interesting stories arising out of quirks of play second. Mind you this is all a generalization and simplification. Most people tend to run games inbetween these two styles. And they're not entirely separate. It's two different ways to enjoy the game. But it's a distinction that I think needs to be brought to more people's attention.
@Puzzles-Pins
@Puzzles-Pins 4 месяца назад
@@rafibausk7071Hmmm. Personally I have a slightly different take. I like the rules to serve the story, but view that story as more of a collaborative narrative. As GM I might know what is going on behind the scenes and what the NPCs are planning, but the outcome is determined by the player actions and their consequences, and so nobody knows exactly how the narrative will unfold.
@rafibausk7071
@rafibausk7071 4 месяца назад
@@Puzzles-Pins like I said a lot of people play somewhere in-between. Though if I had to sort you. It sounds more like you're on the narrative side to me. Another good way to spot the difference. Is what your view is on Random Tables. If your reaction to them is "awesome the more options the better. I love seeing where the dice will take me". Then you probably favor Emergent games. If on the other hand Random tables fill you with dread. Afraid they will mess up whatever story you were trying to build. Then you probably favor Narrative games.

I'm a therapist and DM for teen clients, and we're doing homebrew campaigns with therapeutic aspects to them so my focus is on making sure the therapy part of the narrative and world remain intact; anything else is up for grabs. Which means I absolutely feel the first part of this video; A wants to play this D&D meme character, B just wants to be a wizard and doesn't know or care what races are, C wants to play a changeling who randomly cycles through races with each one having their own stats based on what's appropriate for that race, and D wants to play a mech with a dark unicorn animal companion. We'll make it work, you just gotta give me a sec to think real fast.
@xathridtech727

So without devulging spefics because what type of thing would you do? Is it like you build the backstory of the character to be similar or have them do an exercise to rebuild their life from a 3rd person perspective and have them literally fight their demons These all sound amazing the changeling is a bit stronger than normal but sounds super cool especially if it's not in their control like a physical manifestation of multiple personalities.The robot is a easy reskin for artificer. That is also always my first question for homebrew. Can we reskin something else as long as they have the original name somewhere idc what they name it.

Genuinely heartbreaking to put a bunch of work into your game every week only for the players to not respect any of it while playing. I think there is something very important here that could easily be overlooked. Not only is the DM trying to make it possible for one player to play a dragon, BUT the DM is asking the other players what they think about one of the group having such an unusual concept. And that's very important and something I've never seen on a role-playing table before. Often characters are even made secretly (with the DM) and other players don't know who is playing what until you sit at the table for the first session and you realize what a colorful and absurd group this is. And every time I think to myself, "Can't we talk a little bit and roughly agree on a topic?", and when I express these thoughts, I always hear the same answer: "Don't worry, it'll be okay." When I DM a game and we do a session 0, I also make sure that the players know each other who wants to play what and whether everyone is cool with the different concepts

Oath of the Nord: Channel Divinity: Private Connection: as an action you can use your channel divinity to create 5 ephemeral clones within 120 feet of you for the next minute, afterwards you can use a bonus action to teleport to one of your clones, leaving a clone in your place. If you are within 5 feet of a clone, you have advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws Channel Divinity: Virtual Protection: as an action, choose any amount of creatures equal to your proficiency bonus within 15 feet of you or a clone of yours, split any amount of temp hp between the targets equal to twice your paladin level , additionally, each target that gained temp hp from this effect gets the effect of sanctuary. Aura of Encryption: At 7th level friendly creatures within 10 feet of you are immune to effects that would read their mind, as well as being immune to telepathic communication unless the target allows it. Faster Connections: At 15th level you can swap places with an ephemeral clone once per turn instead of a bonus action. Master of Networks: At 20th level you can use a bonus action to allow your clones to each gain the auras you currently have with a 10 foot radius for 1 minute, this aura does not stack with you nor other clones summoned by you. you can use this feature twice per long rest. I've got 2 nitpicks. 1) paladin subclasses get two channel Divinity options. 2) "free actions" are not a thing in 5e, it would just be written as "once per turn" mentioning that it no longer requires a bonus action. Surprisingly, I don't think this half baked idea would be overpowered XD Paladins don't get much channel Divinity, so while it's a strong feature, you also can't actively move your clones, making it decently tactical to create teleportation "anchor points". That would be the strongest feature, but the rest isn't off the charts, so overall I don't see it causing issues. Well done good sir XD

That last one reminds me of something my DM does. One of my characters (our DM lets us switch them out if it's story appropriate and we want to) was raised to inherit her mothers position in the fey court, so she is naturally trained in politics and a particular way of saying things in a deceptive manner such that they're technically true, but imply something else. My DM often gives her the opportunity to make use of this skill, but they never make me roll for it, preferring to let me hard-skill it and just roleplay out those scenes outright. I much prefer it that way because that kind of wordplay is extremely fun for me, and it makes for some really tense scenes. Even though they would be justified in making me roll deception checks, they choose not to because it's more fun for everyone at the table if we just don't roll. A great DM knows when not to roll dice, and it really elevates the game. Most recently, by the way, my character convinced the queen of a nation to effectively put her in charge of their military munitions production, which she fully intends to completely sabotage. She did not lie once during the conversation, but managed to convince the queen that she was going to improve their production when in fact her plan is to ruin it utterly. Not a single roll was made in that conversation, but the entire table was so tense. Amazing moment.
@mavor101
@mavor101 4 месяца назад
This sort of thing works as long as your character intelligence/Charisma is "average". The one thing that really frustrates me watching D&D games here on RU-vid is that frequently a CHA 24 character, for example, might be given a "hard skill check" as you say, with the player themselves needing to act charming, when in fact a CHA 24 is just way beyond normal human ability, and it really should be handled within the dice system.
@Hoeloe
@Hoeloe 4 месяца назад
@@mavor101 It works as long as everyone at the table is having fun. My character has a 20 intelligence (she's an Artillerist Artificer) and a 16 CHA, but playing this out manually rather than just going "uhhh. i rolled a 16" makes for a significantly more fun game for everyone at the table in this particular instance. And of course, yes, there are going to be situations where the character is better at a thing than the player is, and that's what the stats and dice can help facilitate (and this happens a lot too), but if *not* rolling dice causes a more interesting scene and more fun for everyone? Why would you forego that for the sake of a random number instead?
@madeleine61509
@madeleine61509 4 месяца назад
I think it can depend. The system sounds fun on paper, but then you realise that you have to be good in the exact things your character is supposedly good at. The point of D&D is to make-believe and play a character who is not what you are. By having roleplaying replace dice rolls, you're basically just rewarding players for being less inventive and playing characters that are closer to like their real life selves. Not saying it's bad to roleplay the action and resolution, but I don't think using the dice system that you *chose* to play with should be scoffed at or treated like the "lesser" option. If you don't want to use dice, then there are better systems than D&D. Not to mention a "failed" roll doesn't always imply a "failed" action. It can inform to what extent you succeed, or if it affects your position *after* that action. For example, if you're trying to swindle/scam someone and you roll Deception: a roll could determine whether you successfully catch your lie, or how much money they give you, or whether the NPC becomes aggressive, etc. Skill checks are more than just "do you successfully do the thing?". If I have a rogue pickpocketing an NPC after living on the street for many years doing exactly that, only a Nat1 will be "they catch you rifling through their pockets", and every other number on the die is just to determine how much that person had on them.
@Hoeloe
@Hoeloe 4 месяца назад
@@madeleine61509 And that's basically what I've said. I'm not saying you should never use skill checks, only that sometimes it's appropriate not to even if they would technically be applicable, because it might lead to a better game for your table.
@madeleine61509
@madeleine61509 4 месяца назад
@@Hoeloe I'm not in disagreement that it can work, hence why I said it depends, but you seem to be looking down on dice rolls as the less fun/interesting option (especially in the reply to mavor101) despite the fact that *you* chose to play a dice-driven RPG. Edit to point out that that comment I referred to has since been *totally coincidentally* edited. There's no way that could have anything to do with the fact that you're retconning what you said to seem less absolutist, though...

I do have a couple older players at my table, one seems okay with some RP but the other one almost pouts when we have cinematic story moments. And not because he isn't in them, but cause they're happening at all. I was playing a character in a Gothic horror setting whose family had been killed by a local count. So, because he wasn't strong enough to stop his family from being killed, he fused his vital organs to a robot he had made (becoming a warforged vengeance paladin). And we eventually get to the boss fight, and I start to converse with this Count about how I'm getting revenge, and this other player just goes, "I shoot him, does a 22 hit?" And it's always like that. We try so hard to get him to roleplay, but he's still stuck on ADnD or something.
@hugofontes5708

man, that's unfortunate. it's both bad that he feels like he has to sit through unskippable cutscenes to get the parts he finds fun and also bad for the rest if he interrupts things like that. I see no solution, specially if he always gets impatient with any talk at all, almost sounds like he would be more interested in war games than ttrpgs
@Progenitus
@Progenitus 4 месяца назад
Different strokes for different folks. Probably should lay out different expectations for the game. D&D was super different back in the day but it's interesting to read about it, especially the newer "playstyles" from the older, not RP. I DM'd a 2 year long campaign, very story driven in the fact that all characters had involved character backstories as well as an overarching plot that they had stakes in. It definitely had it moments when we all were down for the RP 100%, but in the end it kind of fell flat. Maybe it was my ability to form plot hooks that was lacking or whatever, but looking back, all the memorable stuff was the fun/cool situations that weren't those cinematic story moments that I as a DM actually planned for. In my opinion at least, Involving singular character arcs takes away from the shared story that can form naturally between the party members from RP/exploration/dungeon crawling (last one which sucks in 5e, that's why no one does it). Been playing 5e for seven years and never branched out until now, picked up a system called Swords and Wizardry which is super cool. Gotta say that games like ODnD/ADnD are amazing rp systems especially when seen as emergent storytelling experiences for the whole group. That is mostly why I think it's important to distinguish that type of cinematic story playstyle with RPing. But hey, roleplaying was also completely different before the 90s. I think it's pretty interesting.

Compare playing chess to adding checkers pieces and funko pops to chess, replacing the colours with something else, etc. Any alteration to a ruleset or using it as anything other than what was intended is wrong. Roleplay comes from rollplay, and is usually a waste of time. You like story, I like games. You want to talk to people and explore feelings, I want to become Genghis Khan. It doesn't matter what "feels right" for you, it matters what the intent of the system is (which means, what is written in the first edition of any system you play regarding how it should be run). Narrative gaming is not gaming, what you want is to basically do theatrics and improv. I prefer to actually play a game. Your ideal "game" is Baldur's Gate 3.
