I don't get why the black celebrity women don't wear their natural hair out. They show it on instagram or twitter but won't wear it out to a red carpet event or award ceremony. I hate that.

The title should be Black hair Vs. white hair as they did not elaborate on the 'good hair' issue. Black hair can be a variety of textures and the looser the curl pattern, the more people regard it as 'good hair'.

I relax my hair, and occasionally wear weaves, wigs, and braids (when I can afford it) and I'm not trying to be "white". Ignorance is bliss. I have tried afro and short and it just doesn't look right on me (in my opinion). I simply prefer for my hair to look good and healthy and for me to be comfortable. Plain and simple, it's nobody's business what someone else chooses to do with their hair.

A lot of people forget, or don't realize, that the struggle of "good hair vs bad hair" is born out of racism and colorism. Dark-skinned slave women were raped by their masters, bearing light-skinned children. Light-skinned, curly-haired slaves were better treated than, and thus envied by, their darker-skinned counterparts, and over subsequent generations this became known as colorism, a term coined by Alice Walker. Colorism is a form of racial discrimination that applies social status according to skin color. The whiter your skin, the more attractive you might be considered to be. Hair texture also plays a part: long, curly, wavy tresses are considered by some to be more desirable than than coarse, kinky, "wooly" fros. You can see the "good hair vs bad hair" struggle while traveling through the history of black hair. When black people of all shades and hair types began straightening their hair, seeking the sleek, straight hairstyles of the white people around them, they were commended by both white culture and black culture. This approval is something many black people (black women in particular) today struggle to realize, understand, and overcome. But it's a double-edged sword. Should a black woman straighten her hair to appeal to white society and the black people who dwell in it, or keep her hair natural and risk negative comments, being fired or expelled, and other forms of discrimination? Even within the black hair community itself you'll find lots of contention. Big, inner city hair shows tend to favor bright colors, hair pieces, wigs, weaves, and extensions, hot combs, relaxers, and straighteners. The sudden rise of the natural movements features embracing all textures of coils, kinks, curls, braids, twists, dreads, the application of hair custards and essential oils, and all natural ingredients. And then, of course, you'll have a whole bunch of in-betweeners (like me) just trying to find out what the heck works best for his or her hair.

I'm cracking up at what the white girls think is "coarse". Even if your hair is curly, it is not the same. Our hair has a certain texture that their hair will never be like. Period. I've seen so many argue "it's the same!!! I have curly hair too! I'm natural too!!" But it's like, what we go through society wise and what our hair is like in general are completely different. We are the only ones on the planet with this hair. Therefore, they (people in society who hate it and make it into a bad thing) do not understand it and we go through a lot of crap from it. Be it physical, emotional, spiritual, verbal, etc. We have stereotypes that follow us all the way to the workplace and to our own families. To say there are things they'll never understand is truly an understatement.
@ruseangirl
@ruseangirl 9 лет назад
black hair doesn't = coarse. A lot of black people have very fine hair (the individual strands) but the texture makes it look full of volume. There is a misconception that black people's hair is rough and coarse and that European and Asian hair is all straight and silky. Most hair has a curl or wave to it and a lot of people straighten their hair and so there is an assumption that most white people have straight hair.
@Kelsie154

White women of Mediterranean decent definitely have coarse hair. Anytime I go to a stylist, that's one of the first things they mention about my hair. How coarse it is. Especially African American stylists. They're usually so surprised that a white woman could have such coarse hair.

Lol just because you haven’t left the country and haven’t seen people outside of the u.s doesn’t mean certain people don’t exist. A lot of cultures generally have textured hair. Fijians for one have the exact same hair as African hair.

I like that Julie Gernstein mentioned that she actually uses African American hair products. Having ad a multicultural mix of friends all my life, I've had white friends that didn't have the "ideal" of straight, thick hair either. All of us had our issues with our hair, and some of my white friends had hair that was dry, "wouldn't grow', too curly, too thin, etc. I always found it to be a bit of "belly button gazing" that so many of us black women thought that all white women had "good hair".

The title of this video is disgustingly racist. It's Black Hair vs. White Hair, both can be good or bad. It's media like this that is the reason there is not perfect integration in society: because people make a spectacle of the differences instead of embracing unity.
@lblack1961
@lblack1961 9 лет назад
I definitely think it is racist...In one way, black folks (in general) assume that all white folks have "good hair", when in fact, white folks do not all have straight, smooth, long hair that is thick, not too thick, or whatever. Why do you think all the hair products have been created and on the shelf in stores (and I mean back before mainstream shopping places included "ethnic" sections on their shelves. It is wrong to assume that white people have the same "grade" of hair as much as it is to assume black folks do.

***** Uhm, I agree With the first part of your comment. The last part was unnecessary. I would NEVER ignore anyone based on whether or not they're a minority.. I would, however, stray away from ignorant people that think that it's okay to say that white hair is worse than black hair or vise versa. Every hair type is beautiful, and if a girl likes her hair straight, she should straighten it. If she likes it curly, she should curl it. The fact that this video is even a thing just brings more spectacle to race and it's a big step backwards in the ultimate goal of equality.

About 10 years ago I started working for a company & in the company handbook there was the appearance rules. One of the rules was "no extreme" hairstyles" which proceeded to list Mohawks, unnatural colors, braids, & cornrows. After about 3 years they finally took this policy out of the handbook. It was so racist, I couldn't believe the company had got away with it for so long.

I wish y'all would've talked about shrinkage especially towards the end when she said she can't tell who's hair is real and who's isn't. For me wen my hair is all the way shrunken up it looks like I only have 2 inches of hair sticking up on the top of my head but when I've took 3 days worth of time (literally) to stretch it out as far as I like it to be stretched people are shocked to see that I actually do have hair. When my hair is flat ironed it goes to the top of my collar bone. #shrinkageisreal yall😴👌🏾

0:18 Two words: Gabby Douglas. This prodigy is the first woman of color in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion, and the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics. She is beautiful, well-spoken and classy well beyond her young 16 years. She worked hard and sacrificed the way others her age in America haven’t. Yet, instead of celebrating her, black women and men preferred to mock her for her HAIR. Shm

Nobody discussed the pressure that comes from fashion. The two black women on the right have hairstyles that would be termed 'funky' or 'artistic', while the hairstyle of the black woman on the left would be termed 'elegant', mainly because it's straight and slicked back (I like all their hairstyles BTW). So black women can't be elegant without straightened hair? I'm waiting for a media portrayal of an elegant black woman with natural hair.

You are right, you do look better with a weave, you do look better putting another race of womans hair on top of your natural hair completely covered. And you do look better with contacts, the lighter the better or the bluer the better.

i am natural and my hair is very healthy. sometimes i wear it kinky and sometimes i straighten it. that is one of the benefits of not having relaxed hair. my best friend wears weaves religously and underneath its natural but unhealthy looking. so weaves work best for her and there is nothing about her "white looking". i'm not more black because i am natural.

Even more damaging than the media, are the attitudes within the black community to each other. A couple of weeks ago a teenage girl was found dead in my neighborhood in NY. While investigating, a whole bunch of crap came to the fore: including the fact that her schoolmates used to bully her for wearing and 'old' weave (not buying a new one frequently enough). Mind you: many people in my neighborhood are living paycheck to paycheck. Yet they still mock eachother for being poor (old weave). Sad.

Exactly. The black community can grow so strong if we stop tearing eachother down. The artist in the music industry that have made it loud and clear that they love women of lighter complextion than dark skin. WTF? Beauty is in all color range. Black women are looked down so much and you wonder why you have those who feel the need to change their looks so they can fit in that "What is beauty" image.

yeah but not everyone wear weave to look like someone or better than someone. My hair grows long but recently I cut it due to damage after the medication I received when I was sick. Since my hair is short, I cantdo certain styles anymore and get tired of the regular short bob look so I might do weave, extenstions or even a wig to give myself a natural look. I know some chick do overboard but thats them not me. I seen Chris Rock film too. I just dont like when people assume I hate myself for it
@nattygirldred
@nattygirldred 11 лет назад
The BIGGER question is: Why do Black people say weave and White women say extension? LOL And why is there a NEGATIVE connotation with the word weave? I have dreadlocks down to my derriere and young Black girls will debate among themselves whether its real or not so we can't win for winning! LOL
@Lenae23

Everyone doesnt have the same texture hair anyway. I wear weave for the length I dont have at the time. I dont may attention to the texture as long as its not flying away. Family members of mine have a range of hair textures (No we dont have perms either). I dont wear weave trying to be someone else thats what separates me from a woman that probably does.

I definitely got the hair policing when I was in middle school. I was natural and have been all my life and I'd get Black girls (and guys) harassing me for not having my hair straightened. And I once had a Black girl come up to me, offended that my hair wasn't straightened, because if she had my hair, she'd do so much with it. It's funny, if she had my hair, she wouldn't have had my hair because she would have straightened it. My hair was long BECAUSE it was natural and not damaged by chemicals.

Well the best hair is healthy hair to be honest. But honestly everyone should love their OWN hair and be proud of it. The problem is the media brainwashes people of color(especially blacks) to hate their hair. And this doesnt happen with people who have straight hair(typically whites). Even though straight hair ALSO has disadvantages, hard to style and keep a style that will maintain for the whole day. No versatility to straight hair, it's boring.

The last few comments have annoyed me. But if I was on the outside looking in it would seem crazy. Like "Hello starving children" Right? So first you must understand what the third question that is asked when any black girl is born.1 Is it a boy or a girl? 2 How much does she weigh? 3 Does she have good hair? Someone in the extended family WILL ask this question. It is as much a tradition as Christmas. And that hair is not a big deal, it doesn't really matter? If the society you live in says it matters it matters. You can work to change it but saying it doesn't is just as foolish as putting way to much emphasis on hair. You have become the complete opposite of what your opposing and thus if they are stupid and to extreme then what must you also be??? But back to that it matters Victoria Secret Fashion Show how many of the models have short hair?.... No, No just think about it. How many of the posters in there stores have short hair? In there catalog? Write them a letter say "Hey hair doesn't matter have all your models wear short hair for the next show." It would save them money-all those models can't have all the same mid-back or longer hair-extensions are expensive. What are the odds they will do it? "Well that's VS" Yes and millions of men watch that show and they see that the image of allurement and beauty is different skin tones and races BUT they ALMOST ALL have LONG hair!!! It has no effect-so Superbowl ads are just there as fillers?? Really? Miss America? Miss USA? Short hair? Hmmmm NOPE!! And that one is even worse you know why? Because she is supposed to be more than just beautiful she has the Total package. Beauty and able to answer some off the wall question and guess what She cares about starving children!!! But you know what she MUST have to win? LONG HAIR. Black women have great trouble getting long hair. Why? Well relaxers which contain chemicals break down the hair and only a few are able to get their hair past the shoulders and Keep it there for any length of time. As for natural many of us don't know how to deal with are hair without chemicals in it and there is a learning curve and even when we do it takes a lot of time for some which is why they keep there hair shoulder length. So even today with the progress made many Black women fall short of the social ideal of beauty and having the whole package and until that changes YES Hair Will Matter!

Obviously not everybody does that, which is a good thing, you should only do, what makes you feel comfortable with yourself. Still the image of beauty has become mainly white world wide. Therefore many people try to adapt to it. But there are so many different kinds of beauty! All the different body sizes, the different races are beautiful. Lol i never understood the big deal with hair. A hot woman is a hot woman doesnt matter the texture of her hair.

The black women who hold on to the relaxer even though their hair is damaged are the worse. I can't with them. I have family members like that...they SWEAR that their hair is long and healthy.

This is pointless because the whole ideal of good hair vs. white hair came from racism.(Some)White people wanted us to hate everything about ourselves,even today still.I love that sista hair in the middle.

If you put it on and take it off, its a accessory. So let it go. You are not the spokesperson for black women and their hair.

It seems like they really aren't freely expressing themselves, so some great points about racial stigmas and womanist issues really aren't properly addressed and highlighted. Although they are touching upon the issues, it is just barely. They seem afraid to delve into one single subject and seem too eager to keep adding additional points of reference for a single question. Where is the discussion? We want passion y'all

Some white and black women shouldn't dye there hair blond, I honestly think as you age blond hair can make you look older.

It's not as easy to duplicate a natural Afro as it is to duplicate European or Asian hair therefore in a way black woman don't have the option to wear a "natural" Afro weave. You are very one-sided.

For me Black women under weaves wigs and braids is really sad. Wearing fake hair is a warning of deeper issues hidden. Fake hair is what it is, fake. What does "Keeping It Real" mean when she has expensive plastic strapped to her head... and proud of it?

There is no reasoning with this fool. He is very much set on us black women that we hate ourselves for wearing weave. He came up with all that from just changing hair.
