Being from Detroit, we did lot of partying with these guys! Led Zeppelins manager pulled plug on them when they opened because the crowd was loving them too much! They beat the Beatles in selling out Shea stadium, Beatles took weeks to sell out, GFR sold out in 72 hours! Highly underrated but they rocked Detroit!

One of the best live performances ever captured on film. The sound is from just 3 guys, the talent level is through the roof and the transitions and tempo changes is unprecedented. Unbelievable.

That bass you were digging is being played by Mel Schacher. He was 19 yrs old at the time Mark and Don were 21. Let that sink in for a while So good from the get go and so young they were something special yet they were ignored by so many. I believe your reactions are proof of how talented they really are.

I saw them in'76 with Black Oak Arkansas and Black Sabbath. Hot boxed the Spectrum in Philadelphia. One of many. And if we were lucky we would get bands at the Tower theater, an acoustic built inside. 5hrs of Marshall driven sound. Now at 65 and think back on the bands I saw for like $8 bucks. What a great youth.

Everyone I know had at least one GFRR album in their stack. As you say, they were all over the radio. Once the 80s hit, the Zep legacy lived on, but GFRR somehow got forgotten. A real shame, as this track demonstrates.

man, when Mark steps on that Fuzz pedal, it just melts my face every time. To think that this American Band, was experimenting with such a heavy sound in 1969, before any of us heard of Black Sabbath. GFR were Groovy, Funky, Soulful, Rock n Roll, and heavy as hell when it called for it.

Ya I saw them live. They are a hell of a band. This song is one of there best live songs, that really shows off their talent. Three guys tear up the stage, and I and the rest of the audience just go nuts. That is how it was in the late 60s. Now, its more of a stage show, with a group going through the motions of preforming. In the 60s the groups gave their all, and it showed. Living in the San Francisco Bay area back than, I saw all the good groups, it was an exciting time to be a teenager. Now, the music kinda died. I met Mark Farner after a show in Nashville, and what a super nice guy. He was doing Christian versions of Grand Funk tunes. He invited everyone to meet him on his bus after the show. I remember it being somewhat run down and old. Big change from the days when their faces were plastered on billboards in the 70’s. I don’t know the whole story, but heard that the other two asked him to sign something after a gig, which unknown to him, gave the rights to the music to them, and left him with nothing. I won’t go see Grand Funk unless Mark is in the band....

Grew up listening to them, including live many times. In this video Mark and the drummer, Don were 20 years old and the bass player was 18. They sold out constantly and quickly. According to their history, the Beatles sold out Shea stadium in NYC in something like days or weeks, while GFR sold it out in hours. People would riot when they couldn't get tickets to their shows. Their history is here on YT and is worth looking up. They took a lot of abuse from their managers and then the IRS and then started fighting amongst themselves. The drummer and bass player tricked Mark into signing off on his third of the band and then they blocked him from playing in it anymore. He's still active on his own.

But I had never heard or seen this performance until about a month ago when I stumbled upon it while watching "reaction videos". Since then, I have watched every reaction video to this performance that I have found. This is the most amazing, intense, passionate live performance I have EVER seen! These guys were at their peak here, with Mark (the lead singer) being only 19 years old, while the other two guys were 20. In this performance everything was at it's peak: their musicianship, the vocals, the front man and the group's stage presence. I likely will die before I see another performance as amazing as this.

Mel the bass player is younger, he was like 18 here. Looks much older and he plays with so much soul. For a 3 piece band and all so young is amazing. This is talent, not some yahoo mixing electronic music.

The three original members of Grand Funk Railroad were from Flint Michigan. Their musical influences came predominantly from a local R and B radio station.

Grew up in Michigan, they were from Flint and they hit the same year as another local legend, Bob Seger. Good times!
