Gris - Easy Allies Review 

I recall someone specifically asking about it to Bloodworth so they might have picked it up due to some of us requesting it (or maybe Brad just thought it was cool and wanted to review it)

this art style reminds me of an older animated film called Belladona of Sadness. I imagine it might have been an inspiration for this game.

It’s on sale now, and I was considering getting it. I’m worried I’ll breeze through it, though I enjoy beautiful indies like unfinished swan, journey, and limbo

@@FoodLiquorCool IMO, Gris has a more impactful message than Journey and a better platforming experience. Either way, you can't go wrong thise games. Journey is an unforgettable experience. Gris is an unforgettable feel.

It’s definitely a 10 for me. One of the best indie games I’ve ever played. Absolutely amazing... Can’t wait to see what this team comes up with next.

"Oh no! The reviewers score differs by 0.5 from what I think it should be" Besides, artstyle (and soundtrack) no matter how good, alone are not enough to give a video game a good score. For some people it will be, but not for others. Something can be visually pleasing, but still be frustrating or get boring after a while. I found this game in the latter category. I appreciate it artistically, but as a game it got boring quite quickly. That experience is personal and so will vary from person to person. Some reviewers didn't like this game at all, for example. To somehow suggest their opinion is less valid, because you think differently, is very egocentric.

Also, you are back just in time, they just secured a new studio too!! We will see the results hopefully starting in late January. Meanwhile, if you liked GT time, check out the EZA podcast and many other produced shows. Bosman even has a new show called Boxpeek which is essentially a kinda high production version of some of the hand drawn bonus bits like battle of the bands he used to do with Final Bosman, except this time it's in kind of a shonen-esque silly but coherent anime style (using paper cutouts backed by excellent voice talent). Finally, full playthroughs and group streams are on the Easy Allies Plays companion channel

It's pronounced correctly. We confirmed with the creators before publishing. Different language. Similar spelling. -Bloodworth

In Spanish and in French GRIS means GRAY. In french the final S doesn t sound so it pronounces /GREE/ but it s an spaniard game so the correct pronunciation would be /GREES/

There's a "Don't Skip" video on Hollow Knight, and they said that show's purpose was to highlight games they didn't have time to review (near their release date at least).

Name a game you have played in its entirety that you feel is of this ilk. A game that bored you from start to finish. Also name your favourite game of all time. I bet its something generic.

Tom Acton well generally if a game bores me to tears I don’t continue to play it. The ONLY reason I play games is to engage my brain. That’s it. Challenge, diffivulty, strategy and intellectual stimulation are the only reason I play games. I accept that some people play games to “turn their brain off”, but that’s not me. When games feature “light” mechanics, I find them tedious and annoying. If platforming isn’t challenging than it’s just going through the motions. If puzzling isn’t challenging than it’s just boring execution of a puzzle your brain solved minutes ago. But you ask for the best games I’ve played recently? I Expect You To Die (psvr) Obduction (psvr) Ultrawings (psvr) Knockout League (psvr) I Am Setsuna Risk (iOS) Hitman Go (iOS) Hitman Sniper (iOS) Heroes Of Might And Magic 3 (iOS) Rocksmith (mac) That’s pretty much what I would write home about over the past few years. As you can see, “narrative” means nothing to me.

I play all types of games and love a challenge but some games can remind you how beautiful the medium can be and should be appreciated. Ico, Okami, shadow of the collossus, flower, Braid, Journey, The unfinished Swan, brothers a tale of 2 sons, papo &yo, the vanishing of ethan carter, Kentucky route zero, Her Story, Firewatch, The Witness, Inside, Limbo, The Last Guardian, Huper Light Drifter, What remains of Edith Finch and out today Below! I urge you to play one of these to its conclusion.

Tom Acton I have played many of those games and loved them! The witness, especially. Thank you for reminding me. That is also very much on my list of notable games from the past few years. Braid, Hyper Light Drifter and others you mention are also favorites. But I would argue that those games are challenging and proper games. This is in contrast to games like Firewatch, which you mention, that I believe to be awful. I engaged with that game in good faith all the way to the end and was willing to give it a pass in calling itself game because the orienteering and navigation could be made to be challenging if you played it like I did with all assistance turned off. But ultimately the story in that game, and the developers desire to FOTCE the player to experience the EXACT story they wanted to tell ruined it for me. I gave.ked to several people for who broke the game by being inside the lighthouse while the mystery man was simultaneously supposed to be sabatoging it as-per the unchangable story. And I myself, at that point engaged in the story, emerged from the accident cave thinking “well I will NEVER tell Grace what I just found” only to have the game yank control away from me and have Henry pull out his walkietalkie and FORCE me to press the button telling her what I decided I would never tell her. That’s just not a game to me. It’s television that randomly asks you to press a button to make it keep going.

That sounds really childish and immature... let people play wathever they like, everyone has their likes. Besides, I think it's cool that those players get to experience something different. A lot of players won't even do that.

I doubt the game is longer than 2 hours anyway. So what else would they do?

Not trying to shit on your opinion (although you are wrong) but tell that to the people who make these "types" of games. Calling them forgettable and useless is ignorant. Not every "experience" needs to be a Big Budget Triple A game with hours upon hours of replayability. People are saying it's 2D Journey, well, Journey won numerous awards plus GOTY IIRC. Maybe give it a try before you disregard it.

@@SaturnTubes Yyyyyyyyup. What this guy said, basically. Metal Gear Solid V had 10/10's and all around praise, for example. Unfinished, incoherent, grindy, repetative, lacking of motivation, charm and conclusion.

I also hate these kinds of “games”. And I think calling them games is being intentionally misleading. Words exist to talk about things in greater specificity. Calling anything done with a controller in hand a “game” is anti-intellectual. If there is no challenge, no fail-State, and no rules then it’s not a game. It’s just art. There’s nothing wrong with just being art.

Would you rather have 1000 more microtransaction-heavy mobile games made explicitly to gouge money from customers? I mean, I rarely if ever buy these artistic games, since they're too simple for my tastes, but I'd rather see more of them because they are "art made with love" and not "factory-made products." This clearly took a lot more work just for the art and music than most budget games do these days with reused assets and standardized animating tools. I can appreciate the effort and the intent even if I don't prefer the style. I won't buy it, but I'm not insulted by its existence.
