We wanted to share with you our progress with growing a tropical fruit tree, the sugar apple! Sugar apples are part of the Annona family which includes cherimoyas, atemoyas, custard apples, etc. These are really interesting fruits that we don't normally get an opportunity to try because they don't stay ripe off the tree for long. We've been growing this tree for about 2 years now, and without giving it any protection for either summer or winter that it's been in the ground! We're really excited about its progress and can't wait to do an update video in the future.
Have you tasted a sugar apple before? What's your favorite fruit? Let us know in the comments!

Definitely give it a shot! Ours is growing really nicely, we don't know if it will produce fruit or not in AZ but it's a really nice tree either way!

Thank you for sharing this video. I always lern something from you both. I want to start a microclimate. How do you do it? When is the best time to start? Do you plant a few trees at the same time? Thank you 😊
@GreeniesGarden

We think the best thing to do is start with shade trees so you can control where the hot and cool areas of your yard are! Then learn about everything else you want to grow, and plant it where it can benefit from the shade of the tree! :D

Give the sugar apple a light prune back 2 or 3 leaf nodes and pull 2 leaves which will yellow and drop before growth really begins anyway as any flowers will come from new growth mainly and you want to keep it compact in that spot - cheers for good videos and do some frost protection on that Cary out back next winter?

Hello Brandon and allyssa as always, love your videos. Do you know of any Anona fruit trees to be fruitful. This is my wife’s favorite fruits. From her country. Sour sop, sugar apple custard apple. I’d love to get her a tree. Thank you guys.

We have seen old atemoya and cherimoya trees produce fruit in a greenhouse, but have not seen any outdoor trees produce reliable fruit. That being said, we have not seen every tree in the valley, so it's possible! Our sugar apple tree has not yet produced fruit (it's about 3-4 years old in the ground) but has survived multiple summers and winters, so we have high hopes for it. Just start with a small plant and take care of it if you're willing to experiment!

What about planting it's so close to the house do you think that the roots might mess with the foundation?

Hi, do you know if I can plant Malay Apple in Phoenix?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Malay apple, rose apple, and wax jambu are very tropical plants, so you'll definitely need to keep them protected in the summer and the winter. We don't know of anyone growing these successfully in Arizona, but it is always worth a try!

How do you prevent cold damage?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 5 лет назад
Where we live, there is a hard frost every winter, so we can't prevent all cold damage. However, by creating a microclimate, frost damage can be lessened. You can also try covering your plants with burlap, creating a mini greenhouse around them with stakes and painters' plastic, or set up fans and/or work lights to either add heat or blow away cold air. :D
