Join me for a full week of training, running with my new Pro Running group set up at Team New Balance Manchester. 70 miles is usually a bread and butter weak for me but it all went a little bit wrong. Was it the ice? The annual Christmas party? or me trying to get hench in the gym? You'll just have to find out!

As someone who aims for around 20 miles a week, falling just a few miles short of 70 doesn't seem like the harshest failure to me! Regardless, even as a Canadian I can commiserate with you about the ice - treadmill running just isn't the same, but sometimes it's the smarter and safer option :) I'm excited to see how you acclimate to altitude training and everything else that goes on out in Arizona - keep up the awesome work Phily (and shoutout to editor-in-chief Daniel!), love the grind!

Absolutely love your videos explaining your week of training and being honest and vulnerable about not hitting your mileage goal. I can beat myself up sometimes and obsess about hitting a number, but it's the overall consistency that counts! Hope you have a great time in Flagstaff! I've raced up there a few times at the NAU track. Definitely an amazing place to train!

Great video with a nice insight on the sessions you do and considerations you make to keep on grinding to reach the goals. With all the positive changes you are able to make on your new location in your new team, progression will be there very soon. After months of 4 sessions and around 35 to 40 miles a week I am going to add a fifth session (aerobic) this week to get to around 45 miles. My body finally feels ready to add the extra session and miles.

As an American, I'm terrible with geography. I had no idea Manchester was 200 miles away from London. I also did not even realize England was 200 miles long. I don't know how long I thought it was, but for some reason, that 200 mile number surprised me.
@PhilyBowden

Haha yup, England is actually 426 miles long as the crow flies! Still, probably the same as a large state in the US I guess!

Wow I’ve just hit 30 miles on my ultra plan and I thought that was a lot 🙈 I can’t imagine how much fuel you have to get in to run 70 a week. I feel like I’m constantly hungry looking for snacks 😩

I went on an exchange to Flagstaff in 2018 (from the Netherlands originally) and I'm so jealous you'll get to be there for a month! I miss it a lot. The altitude is definitely going to be interesting and I can't wait to see how you'll do. Have loads of fun (and good running sessions)!!

I had good natural speed (ran a few 53 second 400s at 15-17 years old), and now, almost 18 years later, I am racing mostly 10k to marathon distance my speed has left the legs. Two months ago, while tapering for a marathon, I ran a few reps of 400s at 1:08-1:10, and that was painful.

Great video and really enjoying watching the journey. My son (19, on a gap year) and I (51, sadly not on a gap year) are going to Flagstaff for 3 weeks (me)/6 weeks (him) in early March, so your video series will be required reference material! Show and tell us everything! It'll be key marathon block training for me before Manchester marathon in April, aiming to bring my PB down from 3:42 to sub-3:30 and for my son a good building block before the spring and summer as he aims to get as fast as possible before going to Loughborough Uni. Keep the inspirational stuff coming! (More on your heavier weight strength routines would be valuable.)

Frost on the eyelashes, that seems so lame, you should spend 45 minutes out at -40C and see how much frost you have, as a guy with a beard, I do tend to build up a large amount of ice and that is without adding in the running :)

Thanks for the insight into the training. Great detail. Very sensible attitude towards the "injury". Something I never managed to get to grips with! There is a school of thought that overall mileage is not the most important thing in marathon training. For instance, it's better to do 80 miles a week with a 20 mile long run than run 100+ miles a week but never cover more than 10-12 miles in any one run - quite easy to do if you double on most days. The number of good quality long runs is what matters rather than sheer number of miles covered?
@johnnyboi5780
@johnnyboi5780 Год назад
I can speak from the perspective of a 2:24 marathoner and what works for me, but I agree that a 80 mile week with a 20 mile long run is better than 100+ mile weeks with only running 10-12 miles at a time. That being said, volume is definitely important, I train on a lower volume than most of my training group but still hold 100 mile weeks for ~6-8 weeks at peak marathon training. This also includes a marathon specific session, a speedwork session, and a 20-24 mile long run that often includes marathon pace miles. I think once you get above 80 miles/week, it's kind of down to personal preference and what your body responds well to, as I have friends who run similar times to me who run 90 miles/week and others who run up to 130/week.

I train in colorado at 8.8k ft a lot. There are a couple of things to try. 1. Watch your hydration and get a humidifier for your bedroom. Almost everyone gets dehydrated at first. And most people get cranky and decide that they dont want to drink more water. 2. Your body does not adjust how you breathe by monitoring oxygen in your blood. It tracks co2 and lactic through acidity. But at high altitudes, you can deplete oxygen in your blood easily. So before you ramp up activity, start breathing as if you are doing the activity. Breath hard before the stairs or at the start of a run, and you will not build up lactic before you start to breathe.

Haven't managed to get beyond like 60km/week without getting injured, which is only about 40 miles. Hopefully once I'm back from injury I can build it up slowly! Pace is a cracking watch alright

Congrats to your course record in the parkrun. I finished your 5k trainingplan today (well I skipped one 60 min and one 30 min easy run, thanks to new year) an improved at my home parkrun in Hamburg to 26:32 from 28:10 8 weeks ago (and also broke my PB of 26:59 from august by 27 seconds). I did not follow the plan by 100%, as I had to switch rest days here and there, but obviously it helped a lot. My next goal is the sub one hour 10k. I think after a 2 week break I will start with the 10k intermediate plan. Unfortunately our Australian Football season is starting soon, so I probably have to skip a few runs more, but I will try to stick to the plan as much as my body allows it.

Flagstaff, Arizona! As featured in the Bobby Troup song Route 66. It winds, well it used to, from Chicago to LA more than 2,000 miles all the way. Somebody must have run it by now? If I was you I'd take the train and listen to Nat King Cole's version of song.

Excellent video, although I must say that I did a 21 mile mountain race in that icy spell. I did fall on my arse a few time and it was flipping freezing but I did get a nice medal and a T-Shirt for it, so that's OK 🤣 It's great following your adventures and I wish you all the best for your olympic dream. I can't wait until I'm shouting "C'MON PHILLY" at the tele 😂😂

This is all really exciting! I've never run at altitude personally, and always wondered how I would do. I've gone running after giving blood (which they VERY MUCH DO NOT RECOMMEND) but I was curious, and I was fine :) Also Canadian, also ice suuuucks. I'm hoping it eventually trains me to be more nimble and to avoid falls.

Great video. I think it's been icier in the UK than in Massachusetts recently, which is unusual for this time of year. Normally you're right, New Englanders have to deal with a lot of ice and snow during winter training, and we definitely like to complain about it. I'll be interested to see which race you decided on for Spring; I'm guessing Boston or London based on timing. Good luck with the rest of your training!

@PhilyBowden
@PhilyBowden Год назад
The resting HR fluctuates and I tend to measure it myself in the mornings and then input it to the data myself (it’s normally between 38-42bpm). Then the zones just calculate themselves off that and my max.. which I think is 200? Could be a different software calculating your zones, or it could be that your easy run HR or where you spend most of your time is way different to mine, everyone’s “normal” is different!
