Video-In this completely free video we show you how to completely remove your inner and outer primary drive housings on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It doesn't really matter the year and make of your Harley as this process is pretty standard. We can say that this video covers 2000 and newer Harley's and likely earlier models. There are minor changes on bolt sizes etcetera over the years, but the concepts and procedures are pretty much the same.
CHECK OUT OUR VERY USEFUL FOR PURCHASE VIDEOS HERE: www.lawabidingbiker.com/buyvi...

We show you how to remove the clutch, compensator sprocket, primary chain, chain tensioner, outer housing, and inner primary housing! There are many reasons you may want to remove the primary drive & housings on your Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Maybe your shifter seal is leaking, you need to replace your primary chain, you want to access your final belt drive, you need to replace your primary chain tensioner, you want to install forward controls, or for any other reason.
You can do this project in your very own shop or garage. No lifts, jacks, or major specialty tools are needed for this project.
So, check this free video out and save yourself a ton of money not having to take your Harley-Davidson to a dealership or mechanic. The best part is having the pure satisfaction that comes from wrenching and fixing your own Harley!

I was able to change mine on my 06 S/G after watching this. Very helpful! I also used a sharpening stone and ran it carefully around the chrome sealing areas of the inner and outer primary covers. That helps to knock down any high spots from the caroming process. I then used fine scotchbrite on the inner primary o ring area just to scuff the sealing area lightly. Last thing I did was a very small amount of Mr Gasket sealant on the bosses that meet up to the engine case so no leaks from the bolting. Worked great and no leaks. I finished with polished stainless steel bolting.

Ryan Urlacher I will be replacing the starter in my ‘05 Road King in the coming weeks. Will I need to remove the inner primary cover on that model? And also, great videos you guys do. I am but a weekend mechanic at best and never realized how easy and straightforward these bikes are to work on. Gotta love the interweb 👍
@kurtben519
@kurtben519 7 лет назад
Great clear and concise video. I used similar home made long allen on a softail to loosen the starter off of the inner primary on a softail. The rear starter bolt was difficult with that tool so I removed the rear tire and the splash guard to get to it. Worked fine as I changed the rear tire the same time. NO NEED TO REMOVE OIL TANK!!! Also I have reused the large primary gasket over 3 or 4 times (if it's the expensive good quality steel reinforced harley one) with never a leak. Just wipe it off and reinstall! If the gasket surface starts to wrinkle it's garbage. No really big deal since it's an outer gasket and is quick and easy to replace. Just my 2 cents.

@jontest5718
@jontest5718 4 года назад
It is really important to note when reinstalling the clutch you will need to make sure that your torque wrench measures torque when turning counter clockwise. Many torque wrenches only read turning clockwise, and you will end up stripping something waiting for the wrench to "click" when it doesnt click in reverse.
@dont.ripfuller6587
@dont.ripfuller6587 4 года назад
a click is not enough and my principal told me clicks are bad, so I use a¾drive impact and gently feather the trigger until I hear a nice crack. the guy down the street says that he likes the crack and well, it seems to make some good sense to me. nothings ever in a bind when I'm done, I make sure every bolt spins freely in both directions. the other cool thing about my ¾drive impact is that it automatically knows what thread direction the bolt is. spins freely.. you don't want things binding up

Ryan good video. Instead of using the wood I purchased the correct tool from George's Garage I also got the locking tool for the exam sprockets and for the both I think it was less than $50 for the two. If I'm not mistaken the 5 inner primary bolts are one use only and should be replaced. If I'm wrong, somebody will correct me.

Great content, thank you. Recently picked up a 2000 RK. Rode it the first day for about and hour without issue. The 2nd day noticed and oil leak from the under the primary after I shut of the bike( maybe from inner) after about an our of riding. Decided to return home , shut off the bike and notice some leaking again. No leaks while driving though. Any thoughts, suggestions and info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Very well done. I need to pull my inner primary and get the drive sprocket replaced. In future you should add comments about what to check for potential problems. Like main shaft walking. Or anything else that may cause a problem in the future on older high mileage bikes. Why your in that far into the primary and have have a lot of miles on drive belt. It would be good to change it out.

This is a great video. I bought my wife a 2015 Street Bob with forward controls and she cannot ride it. I road it and it feels like I'm trying to hold my legs up at the hips, lol. We parked it with 200 miles on it and go out on my 2001 Road King. My dealers told me it could be around a 1000.00 in parts and 400.00 in labor. I think I'm going to try a find the parts and bring these controls back ti mid. She is used to that, so maybe she will ride it or I will ride it and feel a little better. Thanks again for this.

Nice presentation, I upgraded my '09 FLHR with a Screamin Eagle comp kit last year because of the 'banging' during hot-start up. A question...It appears that you 'RE-USED' the torx screw/bolt for the sprocket on the compensator. Everything I've read indicates that you should always install a 'NEW' one whenever it is removed. As I am currently replacing my inner primary bearing & seal, what are your thoughts regarding having to install a 'NEW' sprocket bolt/screw?.........Thanks

Good video, I like the way you guys present it. Please double check me on this but you might add a comment that on later model bikes it is necessary to remove the inner primary housing to remove the rotor to get to the stator and or output shaft seal. I think this started in 2008 but not sure. I can tell you from experience it is true on a 2011 Softail. My output shaft seal failed so my primary was filling up with engine oil and blowing oil out the hole where the rectifier regulator wires connect with the alternator (stator). So anyway everyone I talked to and some videos show removing everything down to the output shaft seal with the inner primary housing intact. On my 2011 Softail the rotor would not come off with the inner housing mounted. I finally got a 2011 maintenance manual and sure enough it says to remove the inner primary housing pretty much as you show in this video.

John we didn't get that far on the project on this 2016. Meaning we took the inner and outer primary off to get to what we needed in order to install the forward controls. I know from experience it is usually needed on later bikes to remove the inner primary to get to the stator. In fact I got lucky on my 2001 and will be able to replace it and the dam leaky seal without that. Whew. Thanks for the comment and God Bless. Rick from LAB.

So technically to go back to mid controls on my 02 fxdx I don't need to buy a new inner and outer primary? The inspection cover is bolted on separately from the outer but doesn't have a hole in it for the stock shifter bolt . Wondering if I could match the bolt size with a drill bit and diy a mid control inspection cover?
@RyanUrlacher
@RyanUrlacher 7 лет назад
There is an internal channel that runs inside the primary for the stock mid control shift shaft to go through. Not sure why someone put a new outer primary cover on just because they removed the mid controls. It's not really an "inspection" cover...It's just a hole for the shift shaft to run through. I hope this helps.
