Cap Hatfield's Run 

When I drove trucks for Schneider National. I meet a waitress with the last name of Hatfield and she was 7th cousin to Devil Ans and I thought how cool was that and she offered to let me come to her place for a 72 hour restart to look at her family photo album. She had a photo of a Young Cap Hatfield that was done in the early 1900 hundreds. She had a lot of newspaper clippings about the trouble going on in WV and KY.

My dad was from West by God Virginia. His father was a miner and eventually a miner owner I have been on a road he blasted out of a mountain by hanging ogg it with a jack hammer. He was a very hard man, starting work at age 12 driving horses for a limestone company. He even survived being hurt by one og the huge chainsaws the used for undercutting coal. He was the sort which as they used to say still had the bark on. I saw as a kid the sort of hard men life in those mountains shaped. This story matched many of the farmers and miners I knew as a kid into the 1960s. The story told herematches my own experience generations later. I hope others can see echoes of of this history in my living experience. Modern city people may not understand the old traditions of the mountain folk, but I can assure you all that spirit was and is alive in that country. . Such men did what they felt they had to, violent or peaceful. Getting an education and learning the law asmature adults must have been hard, but not much got in the way when they chose a course of action. My dad and grandfather were such men, not to be crossed or stopped. God bless you all

I am proudly from the Kentucky Appalachian mountains. My grandma on my mom's side was a McCoy. She had pictures and newspaper articles from that time. She would often tell us stories about the feud. She always said her heart went out to Ole Man Randall. To her he lost the most because of the feud. Several children his wife was never the same after that new years raid on their farm. He lost his house and after all of that the old man dies from burns. I have never picked a side in that feud. I believe both sides lost a lot. I do believe that Johnse got away with murder. It was said he was the one who killed Randall's daughter that morning. But Cotton Top took the blame believing the Hatfield's would save him. A lot of people base Johnse Hatfield by the movie. He was nothing like that. He cared gor no one but himself. He never planned to marry Rosanna. But did marry her 13 year old cousin Nancy. Perry Cline was never in love with Rosanna he was married to Randall's brother's Widow. All if the info is out there but you do have to look. Ehere I'm from we had to study the feud in school. I just hope that bith sides have finally found peace. ❤. Thank you sir for sharing your video.

I grew up just outside of War WV. There is a Hatfield and McCoy tail in and around that area. Grew up hearing stories and have McCoy in my family back ground. My senior league all star games were played in Matewon

I have a second great grandmother who was a McCoy. And one of my mother's sisters married a Hatfield. My uncle Bob was the grandson of Reverend Anderson Hatfield - not Devil Answer. I've been fascinated by the history of the area since I was very young and I still am. Thank you for adding a little more to the story for me.

There is a few things I don't think was fair. Devil Anse and Cap never got in any trouble for their parts in the feud. And Johnce only did 7 years then was pardoned. You 2 men say yourselves that Cap had a lot to do with the raid on the McCoy farm that morning. Yet when he comes back all is forgiven and forgot about. I don't think Ole Randall could ever forget that terrible day. Where I'm from we have something called Hillbilly justice not even that was done to the Hatfield's. But that was exactly what was done to Randall's 3 son's tied to the pawpaw trees. It is still a topic here in the Hills. I guess it always will be. Thank you gentlemen for all your videos about the Hillbilly life. We are no dumb or inbreed like a lot of people think. We are smart and friendly. I love the history of Appalachia always have since I was a child. My wife and I vacation there every thanksgiving. Spending time in and around Logan and Mingo county’s. I never new this about Cap! Truly enjoyed my time with you both and the history lesson.

So according to the Mini series, the nickname "Cap" was because JR had an eye injury that heal with a milky white film over it, but you don't detect it in the photos which are Black and white, the best thing about the series was, good acting, good storyline, but it was flawed, traditionally flawed, but it certainly interested me enough to keep searching and try to get more info to the never ending pictures of history, this particular subject is about the individuals in the big story, and this Podcast is why i keep looking building context and trying up loose ends, well done

I love history! You all do a good job telling this story. I wish you could do a story on the Greene-Jones war that happened in Hancock County, Sneedville, Tn. I have read alot about it on the internet. They say it had alot of similarities of the Hatfield-McCoy fued. Like, timber and hogs, etc.

My Great Grandfather has the same story because he said he delivered the envelop to Bank High and was told by Uncle Anse to sit on the bench outside the court house and wait on Cap but different details. I need to confirm story. Its an audio tape.
