It’s been said, time and again, that the most dangerous part of an abusive relationship is when the abused partner leaves. This case is so so sad. But, unfortunately, as a South African, it happens too often and I hate that such things happen to women daily. Women are abused so much, and “offed” and the perpetrators get away with it. And what grinds my tits even more, is that there are Police initiatives, aimed at teaching women how to avoid being abused, but not nearly as many initiatives to teach men not to abuse. I once attended such an event when I was in university, and the actual police were teaching us how to avoid being in a situation that could “lead to SA”, and when I asked when they’re going to host a similar thing to teach boys how to behave, we were given the basic “boys will be boys” response.

I hear this comparison often. And while I understand your point, it's actually not the same thing. Teaching people how to avoid becoming victims is about seeing red flags and/or dangerous circumstances. "Teaching" boys not to be abusive is about upbringing/parenting. A boy who is raised properly won't accidentally become a predator. I have 2 sons. They are both caring people who are respectful of women. I never felt the need to sit them down & "teach" them not to rape & abuse women! 😏

you relize more men are abused then women you just dont here about and many women lie about abuse daily and stupid people belive the women. I have seen this first hand my sister would beat the crap out of my brother in law and the cops belived her every time she cry wolf. the family was not stupid we knew she was hurtting him thank god he walked aways. secon why do women have to play games with men all the time? why do weman need to push men to the breaking point. wha was the point of her bragging for any reasson just stupid. Im not saying she deserved to die but she could have walked alway and shut her mouth simple. she was pushing him on purpose

I deleted the comment I’d made here (before seeing your reply) saying that there’s no chance he wasn’t lying through his teeth about what she said to him before he killed her. Of course anything is possible (even the highly improbable), and I know that a more measured response (such as yours) tends to be more effective, but I just got pretty worked up listening to this case.

Ladies....if you split up from an abuser, do NOT BE PETTY and tell him that you are seeing someone else or that he is better. Abusive men have the most fragile over inflated egos. Just move on in secret....dont say anything. He wasn't distraught over losing her...he was afraid of having to give her money because in the mind of these man babys with fragile egos, having to give anything to their ex wife, is seen as them "losing".

I think it was another form of him just seeing he’s losing control! They truly want to control you and since she was out he selfishly didn’t let her. He definitely had obsessive thoughts of her. It’s just so sad, everything else you said I’d added in with this though!

He also is probably lying about what she said to him at the end because he had time to get his story straight by two people before the police.

Why in the world do you believe his self-serving *claim* that she taunted him or teased him in any way, much less said to this violent and volatile man that her new boyfriend was better in bed? How is that even the tiniest bit credible to you? He’s a vicious murderer and an obvious liar. She absolutely did know that he was extremely violent and volatile, which is why there’s no chance in hell that she said those things that he claims she did before he strangled her to death.

Good morning Zara! It’s 9 am here 😅 So first- any woman watching this (or men) who feels trapped because of children, finances, living situation- whatever! Just know that there are lots of options out there! My husband knows damn well that I can do bad all by myself! I’ll be damned to have to be unhappy and “stuck” with someone who does me wrong! There’s income based apartments, food stamps, hourly jobs you can get literally for a day! Churches are more than willing to help out (even if you aren’t religious like me)… just know you aren’t alone and you have options!!! I can’t believe he only served 8 years in prison due to the fragility of his ego. He had a well known history of being unable to control his anger, which resulted to him beating Julie, but somehow they still decided he was provoked! This was an absolute failure of the justice system.

My parents wouldn’t allow me to marry my ex-husband because of his drinking. He got just sober enough to convince them he was sober so they would allow the wedding. Less than a month later, I was already regretting it because he relapsed hard and the abuse got out of control. I should have listened to them. We were together 7 years before we got married; divorced after 5yrs of marriage due to his abuse and drinking.

I had never heard of the provocation defense. That's wild! The only reasonable uses of it would seem to me to be long term abuse or someone harming a child. There was a case in the US a few years ago where a guy caught a neighbor raping his son. He went to his truck, got his handgun & killed the man. He was acquitted of all charges. I think they sited diminished capacity. That's kinda like provocation defense I suppose.

Never assume your abuser to decide all the details of where to meet…if it’s on his terf then he will change it to suit his needs. Meet in a public place. Not alone in a forest, not where the abuser who will control the situation and environment.

This is extremely sad and disheartening. That woman deserved life, and he only lost his for 8 years and hers is gone forever. Sometimes the justice system works, and other times, it's the most confusing system we have. I'll pray for her daughter and her family. I couldn't imagine. Having a dad walking around that stole my mother from me so violently. Thanks for covering this. I had never heard this case.

Wait, hold on, I am so confused right now. Why do we have ANY reason to believe his self-serving *_claim_* that she told him that he was repulsive or that her new boyfriend was way better in bed?!? We’re supposed to take the word of her cold-blooded murderer as gospel or something? I don’t believe for one millisecond that she said any of that. Her friends and family all attest that she was keenly aware of his violent rages, that she was scared of provoking him, and we know by her actions that she was doing all she could to ease out of this frightening marriage and appease his ego as best she could while separating herself from him. Assuming this was a judge trial and not a jury trial, how in the world did the judge just blindly accept his ridiculous claims as the truth? None of it makes a lick of sense. It is critical that what we call in America the “battered spouse defense” is not abolished, either here or in the rest of the world. That defense is only ever accepted (for better or worse) when said battered spouse has a long and well-documented history of enduring horrific spousal abuse. In this case, the opposite is true. Not only was _he_ the batterer, but all the history actually calls into question (if not outright refutes) Jamie’s oh-so-convenient account of what happened the day that he viciously murdered Julie. To lump the (too often summarily shot down) battered spouse defense in with this “murderer who can say whatever the hell he wants because he’s the only one who survived to tell the tale” provocation defense is nonsensical, disgusting, totally insane. Am I missing something here? I truly am deeply confused right now.

I have lived with a hoarder because I had no choice. It is incredibly stressful and depressing to live like that. You keep your own areas as tidy as possible and get used to cleaning up before you do anything with food. The hoarder will panic and react badly if you try to actually deep clean and get rid of their stuff; it is deeply rooted in their psyche and hard for anyone else to understand. I have lived it, and I still don't really understand it.

I’m so disgusted with this man. So basically this case shows that it’s ok to kill your partner if they make you mad. No matter the abuse. Absolutely disgusting!😡 I don’t think you’re taking it to another level. Exactly what it seems, he got his feefees hurt and couldn’t control his anger. The defense of provocation does make sense but doesn’t because of the premeditation aspect. You have to think of the heat of passion defense.

What else was she suppose to do? Of course she had finally got fed up with his pushy 'You belong to me' attitude! I have been enough argument's to know he ASKED her "WHY" why she wouldnt come back? what was so great about this guy? dont you love me? dont you want our children happy? etc. etc. and she told him the truth! This man should STILL be in prison, you cant go around killing people because you cant handle rejection and you wont/cant change yourself to make someone happy. And husbands/wives are NOT PROPERTY, just because your married does not mean you OWN another human being! So since the provocation law was abolished, can the women u used as an example still use it? I feel like someone who has been abused for years should have the right to use this as a defense, or is there something else they can use now that it has been abolished?

I really don’t understand the provocation defense. In the case of a victim removing their abuser from the census, perhaps. Here in America we call it the “battered wife” defense. The only other situation I could understand it being used would be in a stalker/stalking situation, where someone knows that they are being stalked/watched/harassed/life threatened by a person that hasn’t *technically* done anything that they could be charged with. I suppose you could argue that their behavior had you convinced your life was at stake and you were so riled up and on edge that it was your instinct to off or be offed. Especially if you are a parent and the victim is your child/spouse. I may be misunderstanding entirely but just in general provocation leaves the door open to a wild range of possibilities. At what point is the provoking deemed serious enough to warrant d**th? And how much is a person supposed to deal with before losing their mind and doing the unthinkable? It’s such a case by case thing that I can’t believe it’s actually a defense. I’d never even heard of it until this story. It’s mind boggling that in this case he said she was taunting him with her new man and how he was better. If she didn’t want to be alone with him it just seems highly unlikely that she would say something like that to him when she knew what his reaction would be. It’s a shame that we only have his side of the story.

This is probably going to sound crazy however along the lines of provocation and all that I do have to say I understand it. Not in this case but as a person who grew up my whole life watching my parents fight I witnessed a lot of the provocation on my mom's part until my dad would beat the hell out of her. I am not at all saying it's right or excusable but I remember screaming and crying at my mom telling her to shut up because I could tell if she didn't stop provoking him he was going to hit her and I didn't want to see her be hurt. So I can say I understand that a woman can definitely continue provoking a man, who is also just human, to the point of lashing out. Growing up with my mom when my dad would be in prison on and off, she was an extremely hard person to be around and still is to this day and there have been times where I've said to my husband that I can understand why my dad would eventually lash out and hit her because she had a way of just getting under your skin and not letting up and just saying the most horrible outrageous s*** at the top of her lungs over and over again and would not leave you alone to calm down. I'm not saying that this case is anything like that I'm just saying that I do understand that a woman can provoke a man to a point where he loses complete control. And as a woman myself I know the power that I can hold in an argument with my husband and that power should be taken with great responsibility.

I have to agree with the father. You work hard and sacrifice to bring your children up well to teach them good manners and good morals. When they choose to no longer follow those is absolutely no reason why you should be expected to foot the bill for them having sex under your roof or living promiscuously or allowing somebody to push and shove them around. Your first thing would be to make sure that they got rid of the abusive male in her life and see if things change but if somebody's stubborn and insists on staying then there is very little you can do. There was absolutely nothing stopping her from continuing her education like so many young people have to and paying her own fees. I think if you're old enough to behave like an adult and pretend you're an adult then you should be allowed to go and live your life like an adult.... I really have to add Ken and Barbie???? Well her husband is ugly sorry. I wouldn't let him touch me with a barge pole

This is crazy and I'm in no way defending Jamie, but I don't believe it was premeditated either. I feel like he got her there and was hoping for some sex and she poked the bear and provoked him. I know she wasn't expecting to be killed over it, but maybe she was hoping to make him so mad he'd give up on getting back together. Sad case either way.
