@@ethanhealy453 The issue with the wording on the cards really it's restriction saying only one of those factors can be in common in the "middle" card. you have to know what your deck can work with alongside the card before going in moreso than many other searching cards because it essentially lets you search any monster if you fit the conditions it asks for. when it comes to generic card draw and consistency boosting in Yugioh, it has weird locks to it. Banish one from the hand, to banish one from the deck, to add the 3rd to hand. the one in the deck has to have exactly one trait that works with the other two, no more, no less

To elaborate on the Mekk-Knight thing for those interested: Mekk-Knights can't just be put onto the field. Instead, they need 2 or more cards in the same *column.* Picture the field like this (i can't seem to line the two in the middle up correctly, just assume they're directly underneath the second/fourth zone above them) [][][][][] [][][][][] [] [] [][][][][] [][][][][] From top to bottom, we have: Player 1 Spell/Trap Zones, Player 1 Monster Zones, Extra Monster Zones (Barring special circumstances each player can occupy one of these, this is where Link monsters, the ones with arrows, initially go), Player 2 Monster Zones, Player 2 Spell/Trap Zones. Now let's say Player 2 summons the lizard. Now the field looks like this: [][][][][] [][][][][] [] [] []0[][][] [][][][][] Now they use it as material to summon Salamangreat Almiraj, a Link Monster. Ipiria goes to the graveyard. [][][][][] [][][][][] 0 [] [][][][][] [][][][][] Then, they place a spell/trap underneath it: [][][][][] [][][][][] 0 [] [][][][][] []0[][][] Now, that column has two cards in it, which means they can put a Mekk-Knight in the monster zone in that column. Notably, MKs care about both sides of the field, so if the opponent has a monster like this: [][][][][] []0[][][] 0 [] [][][][][] [][][][][] that also works to fulfill the condition to summon the MK. This is how you use Ipiria to set them up. You use your one normal summon per turn for it, since you can't normal your Knights anyways, it replaces itself in your hand with its effect, and then you use it to make Almiraj.
@rescuerex7031
@rescuerex7031 9 месяцев назад
I'm mostly confused on how it sets up the Mekk-Knights, cuz it blocks a zone you could summon a Mekk-Knight into, and I'm pretty sure the Links don't require a Column
@GumshoeClassic
@GumshoeClassic 9 месяцев назад
@@rescuerex7031 You use it to make a link, Almiraj, and put that into the extra monster zone. Now the Mekk can go into the column that the Link (plus one other card) is in.

@NniemandweiterR 9 месяцев назад
@@rescuerex7031 while there are ways to get it off the ground, for example, making a link monster or specifically girsu, the orcust mekk-knight, it's mostly a going-second engine because as soon as your opponent has either a monster or spell/trap in any zone, ann you have to do is set a spell/trap in the samle column and you're good to go.

@@najawin8348Yes, both are good. Really good. Painful choice is made for a specific breed of decks, e.g. the polarizing tearlaments, a group of cards that if sent to the gy read "start your combo". If I reveal 3 or 4 of them, which do you give me? Doesn't matter to me, I'm playing already. Last will is less of a one-card-combo, but has the all-powerful generic special summon from deck: say your deck needs a specific unsearchable monster (let's say "cannon soldier" for a juicy FTK), you play last will and if you use any of your monsters for a link, synchro, you tribute it or pop it, there you go. There is a reason they are banned, it's not that there are no archetype cards that do something similar (that too...), but that they have no restrictions at all, they trivialize getting to cards that were not supposed to be that much available

@snowboundwhale6860
@snowboundwhale6860 9 месяцев назад
@@jon_bone I believe those would be Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom and Tyrant Neptune. Venom is a fusion that can copy effects of a monster in the grave for a turn, and Neptune is a Reptile-type Maju Garzett that also copies the effects of one of the monsters tributed for it's summon indefinitely. In their cases the main example I know of for why they got banned was copying Independent Nightingale, which is a monster that's pretty strong but only at high investment, but it's effects are busted when you don't have to work for them; It's a level 1 fusion and gains levels based on investment, but both gains 500 atk per level and can burn opponent for it's level *500 once per turn, and it's unaffected by card effects. By itself it's small unless you sink everything into it, but you can summon it easy with Instant Fusion, and Starving Venom is level 8 (so +4000 ATK, Unaffected, and 4000 burn) and can be made pretty easily allowing for an ftk by summoning it twice to burn for 8k, while Neptune is level 10 so it's the biggest chungus who's unaffected by everything and burns 5k per turn.

*sigh* The card does not require your opponent to activate 10 cards/effects, it also counts your cards/effects. It doesn't make the card good because it lacks something every modern good card needs, especially traps, which is: It needs to be easily searchable. I would still argue that the card is decent. It isn't gutter trash.
@kenja0685
@kenja0685 9 месяцев назад
The card has the potential to be very good in a future format. Imagine in Game 2/3, you tech this card going first, and you set up a playline that allows you to full combo on your opponent's turn, you could probably fulfill 6 to 8 activations of this effect alone. Heck, in Master Duel, if you're fighting Tear/Kashtira/Bystials, you may be able to activate 10 cards without any interaction from your opponent whatsoever. The biggest issue being, it's a winmore card when played like that. You probably have the means to drain all the resources from your opponent from a Turn 1 combo. Giving them access to Quickplay Spells so you can possible activate a potential Boardwipe is something that would already have been constructed from with an end board that probably doesn't want to include a non-searachable trap. The right deck needs to come along to use it and make it look super busted with extremely high consistency. Otherwise, it would probably be better to run an alternative like an Extender or Counter.

Rarran actually understood Small World faster than most actual YuGiOh players. Nice! Also, Stevie didn't explain Ipiria or You're Finished very well, so I'll take my shot. Ipiria: YGO's only resources are the number of cards available and your once per turn actions. Ipiria is a monster that synergizes with a powerful archetype that gets you another card in your hand to potentially use. You're Finished: Activating 10 effects in a single turn is actually extremely common. However, if your opponent is able to do that, there is a good chance that they already have something in play that will invalidate this card. On top of that, it's a trap card. Trap cards have to be set face-down a turn before they can be used unless specifically stated otherwise on the card. This means if your opponent gets to go first, they'll be activating their 10+ effects before you have a chance to set this card.

I think that something about Soul Exchange that wasn't well explained is just how much better tributing a card is, versus destruction. Soul Exchange isn't as good as a Kaiju, but it's still better than regular destruction. Because there are lots of cards that either can't be destroyed by card effects, or gain an effect when destroyed in general. Tributing gets past any way to prevent or benefit from destruction. It's still sent to the graveyard, so sent to graveyard effects still happen, but those aren't as common as effects that trigger on destruction. In Yugioh, protection from targeting has become a lot more common, so Soul Exchange isn't quite as good as it used to be. But it was very strong for a long time.

There was a card like patches that dominated a standard environment a number of years ago called squadron hawk but with squadron hawk they served a lot of purposes like not really being worth a removal spell so often you could just get tons of damage off, or using them to shuffle the deck with jace the mindsculptor so you got to see a ton of cards. With patches because it's a legendary running multiples is less desirable so it's really just a 1/2 that doesn't do anything.
@Lightning_Lance

Squadron Hawk has evasion. But Patches triggers off of any pirate card and just goes to the board instead of the hand... But it's Legendary. And random 1/1s with no abilities are a lot worse in magic because the defender chooses blocks and damage is reset per turn. So I still think Squawks are better.

For Guarded Treasure, the only way I see it working is if you want to have a lot of cards in the graveyard, like with Chaos decks where you banish light and dark monsters from the graveyard constantly to summon out your boss mons, such as BLS-EOTB or Chaos synchro monsters such as Chaos Angel once you have done enough banishing and such. Very situational though because you'll want to run Maxx "C" too so you have options for what you want to discard and later banish if your opponent specials summons enough.

The reason patches would be bad in magic is there are a lot of cards that make one or two or even more 1/1 tokens, and those tokens don't have to be in your deck, you draw 7 at the beginning of a Magic game which in turn means there would be more chances for him to end up in your starting hand and finally there are so many deck thinning cards in Magic already (fetch lands, gitaxian probe and such) that patches would be simply outclassed by those. Love the videos Rarran, recently found your videos after you collabed with Voxy and other MTG streamers, used to be a legend rank HS player myself, stopped playing after those 2 months of Demon Hunter Release hell, started playing Magic and sadly never came back to it.
@belsantiago3491
@belsantiago3491 9 месяцев назад
I mean its not like hearthstone is any stranger to cards that generate lots of tokens as well, even some pretty efficiently costed ones nowadays where you're not paying that much for those 1/1s. Its not really the getting a token being that much more valuable in Hearthstone that makes Patches good. And while the deck thinning is definitely an upside Patches has I think its importance really tends to get overplayed, its more of an incidental benefit it also has, if Patches had a line of text that says your deck size is 31 so it effectively wasn't thinning your deck compared to just not having Patches in your deck at all I honestly don't think it would have actually changed how much Patches was played at all. At the end of the day the simple reason Patches was strong was it was a card that gave you something for nothing, so to that end Gitixian Probe is actually probably a better comparison than the likes of other token generation cards. The kinds of decks that played Patches already wanting to have a pirate hit the board on turn 1 or 2 (or in Patches' prime just generally wanted any minions to be hitting the board on turn 1 and the existence of Patches pushed the 1 drop pirates ahead of the other 1 drops). For those decks adding Patches to your deck means you just get an extra 1/1 on the board at the cost of no card draw and no mana spent for doing something they were already doing regardless. A 1/1s not worth that much in an of itself but when it didn't cost you anything there's no reason not to play it, token generation cards don't really compare you are still (usually) spending mana and a card draw to get that card even if it is super efficiently costed and giving you those 1/1s at above rate. Patches just comes in totally free alongside another card you were already playing in your deck and were thus presumably already willing to pay for as is. Its strong in the same way a 0 mana creature that draws a card would be strong in just about any game, even if it doesn't do much the fact its doing something for basically nothing would make it a card you have to justify not including in any deck that could. Patches' only cost is you can draw it at which point yeah it absolutely is a bad card when that happens no way around it, but the odds are favorable enough in the kinds of decks that run it that the benefit of getting something for nothing in a majority of games is worth the small percentage of games you draw a bad card. So to that end yeah Magic's different starting hand size and mulligan rules are probably the most relevant fact to evaluating a hypothetical mtg Patches and yeah, both of those work against it. But there's also magic's larger deck size, which actually works in magic's favour if you still have him as a one of. The fact you can go up to 4 and then the legend rule gets weird and can bump it back down to unfavorable compared to Hearthstone. At the end of the day though its hard to see how (usually) getting something for nothing isn't good in just about any game

A bit of elaboration on "Small World" for those who don't play Yu-Gi-Oh or are still confused as to what the card does - if you've ever heard of "six degrees of separation, " it's kind of like that. You start with a monster in your hand (monster #1), find a monster in your deck (monster #2) that has EXACTLY ONE THING in common with monster #1, then you search a third monster (#3) that once again has EXACTLY ONE THING in common with monster #2. Monsters #1 and #2 are then removed from play, while monster #3 is added to your hand. In practice, this leaves you with a -1 in card advantage compared to when you started out - however, this card potentially lets you search ANY MONSTER in the game, meaning it can be very useful for decks that rely on a specific "combo starter." The catch is you have to include the right "bridge" - that is, a monster #2 that lets you transition between monsters #1 and #3. It's a card that rewards creativity and ingenuity, as in order to unleash its full potential, you need to build a deck while paying attention to the "Small World lines" your pool of monsters has.

Phantom of Chaos actually _does_ see play in Edison, and Robbin Goblin did see some very fringe play waaaaaaayyyyyyyy back in the day iirc. Just saying "oh, it's bad", ignores all this nuance because these cards, 9 times out of 10, aren't just good or bad in a vacuum. They're only good or bad in a context of other cards. He ended on: Grapha, Dragon Overlord of Dark World Reign-Beaux, Overking of Dark World Muckraker From the Underworld I had my full hadn of 5, my draw for turn. I had 2 Super Polymerization in hand from the start. Proceed to Super Poly into Stapelia, then make Garura off his Reign-Beaux and the regular Grapha he summoned back. then Branded Fusion for the lethal summon

I actually play "You're Finished" in my Tearlaments since I'm activating a load of effects during my opponents turn, so they can't avoid the effects of getting fkd. But it's not good enough for most decks xD

The difference in card evaluation is insane. In magic if a card saw play in several viable decks, I'd say that card was good. But every time he's like "nah, it was a key part of 3 or 4 decks but it wasn't good."

To be fair, road warrior did see play in heavy synchro spam junk decks back in the day. Quasar was never meta defining but it was probably the ultimate wombo combo deck of all time and road warrior helped to facilitate that. Basically, road warrior, level eater, and its effect helped set up plenty of lines to get closer to quasar. The lvl 8 status also didn’t matter so much when you were eating its level again and again to where you wanted it. Junk speeder does it better nowadays.

Guarded Treasure might be one of the few non pendulum cards that were actually made entirely unplayable by a Master Rule, as you no longer draw a card for your first turn and thus you cannot even use this in your first turn, because you lack 1 discard.

phantom of chaos uniqueness is that it can copy effects that are hard once per turn. so it has nieche use cases than can become really insane if it gets a little more consistent
