And like the next game he had a hat trick and the OT winner and they beat a TOR team that was way better on paper. It's almost like Tortorella isn't the problem
And yet he signs a 2 year $10 million dollar contract with them not even a month ago, throws a fit, and leaves his teammates hanging in the game. Pure diva. In the long run all he did was tarnish his name. No team wants to see that shit.
@@rightcoast7049 it’s called a bridge deal dumbass it’s a cheap contract so he’s easier to trade. seems like winnipeg wanted him considering they just gave up laine and roslovic for him
@Jordan M to be honest, I’m not in a party going mood at all. Being a jets fan I have seen this joke overused to the point where I’m about ready to explode. Sorry for raining on the parade, in hindsight, i should have turned the other cheek and kept scrolling. I was down in the dumps because I’m gonna miss Laine. My bad, party on. I’m gonna go watch some PLD highlights to pick myself up
This is exactly like the volcano in Yellowstone, is not a matter of if it will erupt, but when. Torts will chew Laine's ear, we just don't know when...
Energetik C I thought the jackets did alright last last year I mean they got smoked in the playoffs. yeah I don’t think you could even call this the playoffs lol I’m still confused about it the 5-12 seeds playing just to make a Even bracket? lol
When it works, he gets the best out of his players ... when it doesn't, players want OUT. He's a damn good coach, but you can't treat everyone in exactly the same way if you want to get the best out of them.
@@Michael-ki1zy Same ... and I would have loved to see what he could have done behind the bench with our current group. One thing you can always say about a team Torts coaches, they work their tails off and have a distinct identity ... but the yelling most likely gets old.
@@Whippets I agree and don't. Yes, usually it's a very direct identity with little deviation, and yea I would say most players buy in, but there's always been clashes with him and players I think more than any coach I've ever seen. If the goal is to get to as close to 100% consistency among all players, then I think it would help him realize that sometimes this can't be forced and has to be either nourished, or even allow players to find it themselves. I like Torts, he's on the stricter side which I think is needed, but he needs to tone it down imo.
@@Michael-ki1zy it’s such a tough call. Others players respect it if you coach the exact same way for everybody, but if it’s not allowing your best players to thrive, it can really screw a team or player up. If you’re an old enough Ranger fan, this is exactly what happened with Keenan. He got the best out of most of his guys, but they were mostly vets with rings or history with the coach to back him up in the locker room. Kovalev wasn’t a fan of him and Leetch had issues with him, but I’m guessing none of them would trade that cup for better stats and more ice time.
@@andrewhogan6533 Yea totally, that's why I think coaches like Keenan and Torts thrive better in short term stints, because it seems after a while part of the locker room inevitably rebels. I remember Torts departure from NY, and it was a group of players just sick of him. That wasn't completely public but it sort of was. I think Torts should be like a stanley cup run specialty coach, or a identity crisis fix coach, other than that I don't see him excelling. He loses his mind.
Tort is a real coach. He goes to war for his players on the bench and in the press, yet he expects the best out of you and isn’t some wimp who just wants to make you feel good. People hate him, I like him a lot!
He’s an incredible coach he took over a horrible Columbia team and made them relevant he won a cup he’s won a billion playoff games best coach in nhl history
RDV V this is so stupid. You can’t be a horrible coach and win a cup. The team can be amazing but if you don’t have a coach that can make them come together and play, they’ll never win anything. Just like the leafs. Ya people get sick of his shit sometimes and whine but you can’t say that he doesn’t know how to coach a team.
@@nicholasderderian2224 it really depends on how they go about it those kinda coaches can be great and you can get along amazingly outside of the game. But you can also hate eachother
Arouk I’ve been on both sides of the spectrum in terms of having both, baby sitter and Drill Sargent style coaching tactics used on me and neither one really works the babysitters lack respect from their players and the result is pathetic. But a drill Sargent can lower morale to a point where no mater what kind of training or skills the group had, the best results do not show up because they are so worn out that they don’t care anymore
Torts has a three to five-year shelf life max: he'll get a team that's underachieving to play much better than they were ever thought capable of but after going as far as he can take them, they eventually tune him out and stop listening and the team falters...he even admitted his relationship with some former players (take Brad Richards) was destroyed by him and Bobrovsky and Panerin didn't want to re-sign in Columbus despite sweeping the Lightning...this is probably his second last year in Columbus...if they don't win this year or next he's gone
@@DrFunk-rk6yl Dave Manson chased Mike Keenan around the dressing room and hung him on a hook. I would have liked to see Foligno act like a captain and tell Torts to knock it off after Torts went back at Dubois a second time.
omgnuub I feel like he’s saying “pick up the pace! You’re my main guy; stop fucking about about get your head out of your ass!” “What the fuck do you know, I am trying” “no you’re not, shut the fuck up! Shut the fuck up and get your head in the game or get the fuck off the ice!”
He was specifically ripping Dubois for a poor line change that either lead to a goal or really good scoring chance. He said wake the fuck up and shut the fuck up more than once lol
*Tortorella: "[Unintelligible] ...and you f***ing HOLD it?!?!"* *Dubois: "Well he's right NEXT to me!"* *Tortorella: "I'm benching you next time! God damn right I will! God damn f***ing right!"*
@@lesfry5897 My point is that a good coach knows who can take it. He also knows how to get the most out of all players. Different players, different approaches.
I think a good coach should demand accountability from his players, but also understanding that we are all human and do make errors now and then. I also believe that if the coach doesn’t hold himself to the same level of accountability, then it’s more of a “do as I say, not as I do” type of exchange. A boss that doesn’t admit their own mistakes is destined to fail. Having some personal humility goes a long way.
*Trying to perfect my lip-reading skills* _Disclaimer: I didn't see this game but based on the context it looks like Tortorella was upset that PLD held onto the puck and turned it over, or passed off/dumped it when he should've taken the shot._ 0:12-0:19 *Tortorella: "[Unintelligible] ...and you f***ing HOLD it?!?!"* *PLD: "...[but] he was NEXT to me"* *Tortorella: "I'm benching you next time! Or else I woulda shot that!"* 0:33 *Tortorella: "One at a time!"*
1st of all coaches who take it out on players like we see on this picture demonstrates that those coaches lack the skill of communication. and this dude if proving this point.
Everybody sticking up for torts here is ridiculous. Do you guys not remember this is the same guy that went on TV and said your star player shit his pants a few years ago? Hes not a good coach either. Hes Mike Babcock 2.0 and hes single handedly ruining hockey in Columbus
Torts is a beauty. He's got a keen understanding of effective alternative methods of motivation. What better way to get an athlete going in the moment than to rip a strip, question their game, and then throw them right out there to shove it in your face and prove you wrong? There is something to be said for the unconventional.
It’s weird with Torts, cause he’s absolutely amazing at coaching these young, gritty, grinder type teams and brings out the absolute best in them; but can’t really coach superstars or veterans with established chemistry (like in Vancouver). Still love the guy though
Yeah I kinda wondered if it was just a bad fit in Vancouver. Torts kept saying the leadership in Vancouver was great (sedins), that they had really good work ethic and class. Didn't seem to see him yell all that much that year but Vancouver also didn't do that well.
I love how he slides in pointing his finger "none of that shit anymore." Turns away, thinks "fuck it" Turns back and just RELEASES it on Dubois. And the other guys are like "... Oh shit..."
Love or hate him, I love Torts. He is what he is , and that 2004 team was the best. Lecavalier, St Louis, Richards, and Boyle were stellar. Richards is a playoff beast!
nobody likes a coach that loses it on the bench, these are professionals and sometime professionals have a bad game/period. this should have been addressed in the locker room not on the bench and on camera, you can only belittle a person so much before he turns on you, me personally would finish off the season for my self and my team, and tell my coach to stick it, with a slap shot to the shins in practice
sounds like you cant take old fashion criticism & motivation techniques. character building is much more important in the NHL than the pampered approach. PLD has it in him to be great and was under performing, simple as that. In fact I hope Bemstrom ( #52 )who was right next to PLD on the bench takes note. he needs to turn it up as well.
oh you mean the time they sweeped the tampa series 4-0? or this round where they sent Toronto to the summer holidays? Both times having 50% the salary expenses than both of those two teams, So Shut Your Yap (Brooksie)...
@@Vestu I didn't pick up on your first comment about the salary differences. If you want to argue that he had more money and still couldn't win the cup, then you're just proving my point! Duh!!
Hmmm... so, the question I think, is not whether or not Tortorella is a good coach. The question is does all this drama make him a better coach? I don't think so. Players tend to quit on coaches like this when the team is not doing well and not improving despite an honest effort from the players. Discipline issues are more effectively handled in private.
Honestly from my experience the higher level u go the less the coach should act like this... it not only demoralizes u but it’s brings the whole team down hearing it... I mean he’s a good coach but he needs to stop acting like their dad it’s awful
Completely agree. I'm a dad and I've lost my temper like this and it's never ok unless we're talking about life and death shit. It IS just a game and PLD is a great player. I can't wait to watch his career take off in Winnipeg.
Can someone please tell me the names of the player(s) that are left and right of Dubois? The reason why I’m asking is because they showed nothing but respect to the communication between Torts and Dubois. I like that in a team.
Laine wont stay in Columbus for a long time🙁 "Blue Jackets star forward Patrik Laine was benched during Monday’s win over Carolina because he “verbally disrespected” a member of the coaching staff, a source told The Athletic on Tuesday. Laine didn’t play for the final 26:19, missing the entire third period in a tight game, but it wasn’t the result of his repeated defensive miscues. Neither Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen nor coach John Tortorella would comment when reached by The Athletic. Laine’s agents, Mike Liut and Andy Scott, did not respond to requests for comment. The Columbus Dispatch was the first to report Laine’s flare-up with a coach. It’s unclear which coach had the interaction with Laine or if it was a single interaction or a series of events. Brad Larsen coaches the Blue Jackets’ forwards, while Brad Shaw coaches the defensemen. Those two, along with Tortorella, are on the bench during..."
and why have they never won a cup? Now we know. The laid back instructors and professional treatment is why Concord Blue Devils have 19 championships since 76.
Another fine example of player mismanagement demonstrated here by Tortorella. And now, Patrik Laine probably already wishes he was still back in Winnipeg. Well, whether it's Tortorella or Laine, one of them for sure won't be back in Columbus next season.
