Showing off my recent Cyclic stick for the Virpil base and VPC Constellation ALPHA-R Grip. Until now I have used the VPC Flightstick Extension - 200mm but it just didn't feel right to me in helicopter flight sims such as X-Plane or DCS World. This is a walk through how I made it for my sim pit.
I make announcements for upcoming videos on the CrashMeTwice.com website, Twitter and Discord.

This is not a how-to guide but rather just a project I wanted to share on how I made it for myself. Hope it will inspire somebody. Thanks for watching! 😀

Great project. I bought the virpil extension but I do not find curved enough. And for now can't find any other one that will suit me more. But I'm far from being able to do something like yours...
@crashmetwice

@@harf4ng Yes, I couldn't find one either at the time and that was the reason to make my own. However, I have seen some extensions on ebay lately which are longer and more curved. You may want to take another look. Thanks for commenting and watching the video! Cheers

@@crashmetwice I found a way to do it that will go well with my force feedback base from VP force control. I bought two z extension from virpil. I will put one z extension on the base, the virpil kinda straight extension on this, not really straight but a bit forward, then another z extension that go toward me and the grip on the extension. It will allow me to go over my force feedback seat and have my grip close enough and at the desired angle. Will receive the z extension only in February though. They are short of them.

I want to thank you for sharing your build. Using your design, and this video, I built the exact same extension. I did it using my lathe and mill machines, and it came out perfect. Much better than the 200mm s-curve extension. I watched this video repeatedly figuring out the measurements needed, and yes it very much inspired me.

Excellent! The Tomcat is my bird of choice in DCS but after pre-purchasing the Apache I thought I had better practice flying the Huey. I'd like to make a collective and modify a stick for cyclic so it can be a bit more realistic. I dont have metalworking tools but I'm sure I can come up with something. Thanks for the inspiration!
@crashmetwice
@crashmetwice 2 года назад
That all sounds exiting! I am waiting myself on the Apache and yes, practice never hurts. I flew the longest time with the standard Virpil 200mm extension until I made my own. That was before Virpil came out with the Z-Extension and maybe 2 of those and in between a straight one would be something to try. Just an idea. Nothing is cheap in this hobby :) Thanks for watching!
@projecttomcat

@@crashmetwice Ha, you're not kidding there! I fancy the Virpil VFX for my Tomcat pit, but she's pricey.... And the import tax to the UK would likely be another £100 on top.

Hello. A great job. Congratulations. I have a question: Where do you get the cable between the grip and base? Thanks
@crashmetwice

It's just 22ga stranded wire (I wouldn't go thinner) you can get at ALI , ebay, or Amazon. I soldered it to the existing wires, used shrink wrap, and automotive split loom. Thanks for your comment and watching my videos! Cheers

VERY nice. I wish I could do something like that. Did you look at balancing it so that it's weight plus that of the grip doesn't try to pull the base in any one direction. It would be interesting to see it standing by itself with the grip on.
@crashmetwice
@crashmetwice 2 года назад
No problem with balancing. The extension is very light and I made it so that the point of gravity stayed pretty much the same. Thanks for watching!

someone needs to mass produce that extension and bring it to market, i know theres some standalone helicopter control bundles that come with the stick and collective and pedals that you bolt to your chair I'm sure Virpil will come out with something to accommodate the helicopter pilots

Got a complete Virpil setup on a long awaited backorder in Lithuania. What is the spec for the cable? It looksmuch like a Mini-DIN 7 pin in a round circle with 2 unused (3 pins opposite 2)
@crashmetwice
@crashmetwice Год назад
Cool, hope you get them soon! If you are talking about the connector which is in between the base and the grip it is a 5pin mini DIN Inline Audio AV connector. To connect to the base from PC or another VIRPIL device (connector on housing), it is a XS9 mini XLR aviation self locking 5pin connector to USB A 2.0. I am revamping my entire website right now (it will be another week or so before I have it up) and will have a page about these connectors and also on other controllers, maybe I even make a video after the Force Trim mod is completed. Thanks for watching!

Yes, 3mm 6061 is what I used. 7075 is easier to machine (less gumming) and if I had it on hand, I would have used that instead. I will add a part's list to my Discord server soon. Have been busy with a kitchen remodel :-) Thanks for watching!

@crashmetwice
@crashmetwice 5 месяцев назад
@@fa-ajn9881 Yes, I have one of those CNC bench top router/mill as well. To be honest, I am using it rarely (only when I do shapes I can't do on my mill). By the time I get it drawn in Fusion on the PC, run Gcode, etc. I have it done on the manual lathe or mill twice over. I certainly would recommend if you start with a manual lathe and go one size bigger (check my website) than the mini-lathe, The chuck size matters and I had the mosfet's on the mini-lathe burn out twice. I lacks on power and if it stalls the mosfets are the first thing which go. Just a thought. If you like you can chat with me on discord. Thanks for commenting. Cheers
