My histamine problems were worst before and during my periods, and I just learned about the estrogen-histamine link with Dr. Brighten, in her PBCS Awareness Week. It's in her class with Dr. Sarah DeFrancesco. (my problem here being periods & low progesterone) Ah-ha moment! *And it's also applies in case of autoimmunity (MCAS). The PBCS Awareness Week is on replay this weekend; binge all 54 classes for free! Thank you very much for this channel !! :D

This has been me my entire life! I never knew what was happening before. It hit so close to home I was in tears. I have a hard time with beef gelatin but not with beef collagen?? What meats are low in histamine would u recommend? I’ve been vegan for the past 10 years and Ive only gotten sicker. I can’t eat anything from the diet because most of it was causing a reaction. Im feeling better so far on aip with more energy and no brain fog and no bloating! I would love to someday be vegan again but for now I’m healing. Thanks so much!!!

I'm so glad my video was helpful to you!💕 For meats, the important thing is to eat them really fresh!! Leftovers will develop more and more histamine as they sit in fridge. Buying frozen meats and cooking and consuming right after thawing can help. Leftovers can be portioned and frozen right away.

Wow you are very knowledgeable and present the info in a way that is easy to understand such a nuanced multi-faceted topic……I’m starting to think I may have this……been suffering from sporadic heart palpitations for over a year now, lost 80 lbs in a year without trying, get red ears from time to time generally at night….seen cardiologists, Gi docs, oncologists and everyone says I’m healthy as a horse. Of course they can’t explain the rapid weight loss other than saying it’s malabsorption, anytime I wore a two week heart monitor, of course I didn’t have a palpitations, stress tests all good, I’ve been radiated so many times I may need to keep that oncologists phone number handy 😞 but the more I learn about histamine intolerance the more I think it’s a possibility. I’ve noticed pretty much any time I eat my nose runs 🤷‍♂️

Loving your videos...Your personality is charming and engaging...I am wondering what Dr. Sarah B. suggests for those who need thyroid meds who do have histamine issues...Take the meds, and heal the leaky gut, and do the low histamine diet.. ? I get migraines and a panic attack, when my histamine is too high...I have done the low histamine diet, and keto at the same time. I heard you explain that you do the AIP diet, and low histamine at the same time...I am impressed and encouraged by your journey, all that you know and have figured out about yourself, and am grateful you do these videos. Thank you. Tana

Yes, but nowhere near as carefully! I can drink red wine on occasion, use balsamic vinegar in my salad…. If I eat pork sausage (nightshade free) I noticed my eyes are running all the next day. Fermented carrots really upset my stomach. I just try to listen to my body and avoid specific things that trigger me.

Hey Stacy, Does a histamine overload slow down or affect the time needed to repair your leaky gut on the aip diet? I'm like you and have a bad reaction to bone broth. Took me a while to figure out I thought it was something else I was eating. Ty!
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 5 лет назад
The histamine issues might be a sign that there is SIBO to contend with. If you have a functional physician you could have them do a lactulose breath test for SIBO, that would need to be addressed before AIP can heal the gut. Sorry you are reacting to bone broth, it's supposed to be so healing, it's frustrating when it does just the opposite!

Yep, I had two deep tissue bodywork sessions for the first time in years during an extremely high pollen season and while eating lunch and my right cheek swelled up like a chipmunk. I didn't know what was happening! It calmed down over the next few hours, but in the days that followed I noticed random lumps showing up in joint areas, such as the crook of my elbow and my wrist. I eliminated histamine foods for a few days and am now taking HistDAO prior to meals. It's fine now, thankfully.

This is very informative... thank you so much! I’m basically eating leafy greens, lamb, pork, oranges, onions and broccoli and this keeps my histamine as low as possible. Supplementing Quercitin, omega 3 capsules, d3 and glutamine which seems to be helping. Please can I get your advice... I feel I now have leaky gut which has caused my histamine Intolerance since I got food poisoning since I ate a lot of undercooked black beans (didn’t realise they were undercooked). All of my symptoms came right after this meal. From your experience what do you think happened as doctors just tell me it’s an allergic reaction which is rubbish and I haven’t been able to see functional doctor yet (it’s hard in Spain as the GPS are the gate keepers to see them)? I think I have damaged my gut from the lectin toxin in the beans and I’m trying to heal it but I’m not sure as it’s just happened recently. I would greatly appreciate your feedback.

Some of the foods you are eating can be high in histamine or histamine releasers (spinach, pork, citrus) but if you are not having symptoms then keep doing what is working! Not everyone reacts to all of the foods on the high histamine lists. Getting Viome testing and following their diet recommendations is what put the final pieces of the puzzle together for me with my digestion.

I have been plagued with a clogged nose, lichen planus that itches to high hell, and Reynaud's phenomenon (red cuticles) for most of my life. While medical science has never confirmed it, I assumed they were all autoimmune in nature. Never even considered that histamine might have been behind it (and still it might not be). I have also looked at DAO supplements (pronounced die-amine, BTW), and I fail to understand the need to add sucrose. On the same page at Amazon were kidney supplements--simply ground up grass-fed beef kidney from NZ which contains DAO among other nutrients. Many reviewers had claimed relief from histamine symptoms. I intend to purchase it and I'll post back to report my results. I have been eating carnivore for most of 4 months and still no resolution--including no resolution of arthritis in knees and feet--and I fast a lot and only eat one small every couple of days. But I could not give up coffee/decaf with heavy cream. It would pain me to discover that my one indulgence might be the cause. And growing up, I consumed a lot of dairy long before drinking coffee.
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 4 года назад
Carnivore could be high in histamine depending on the source of the meat. Dairy might be an issue worth doing an elimination test on. Are you getting any omega 3's? I would highly recommend a functional medicine physician to help you put the puzzle pieces together💕

I was diagnosed with lupus in August with just a positive ANA . I also started getting bad allergies. Seasonal, mold, dust, pet dander blah blah. WELL I was put on generic plaquenil and then taken off of it and immediately began to have a severe flare. This was last August. Currently I feel like I’ve lost complete control over my own body. I’m having a flare at the moment and I’m having some sort of allergic reaction to something in my home because I get random itchy bumps. I just started AIP but I find myself starting to get bored with the menu. I’m unhappy and don’t know what’s causing the itchiness... either food or stuff around me or all of it. 😫 it’s over whelming and stressful

@RealWorldAIP

Spinach is high in histamine so if the migraines are triggered by histamine overload then it's possible but there are many many other things that could be the trigger. It might be helpful to keep a food and symptom journal for awhile.

Hi Stacy, Have you ever heard of any correlation to histamine intolerance and weight loss surgery? I never had any issues, besides my thyroid diagnosis until 2013 , after I had gastric sleeve. My gut feeling is that is where my issue started.
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 5 лет назад
I have not done a lot of research on the side effects of gastric sleeve surgery, but it does make logical sense to me that it could affect DAO production (an enxyme that breaks down histamine), as DAO is secreted by small intestinal epithelial cells. If your histamine intolerance was caused by lack of DAO I'd ask your doctor about taking a DAO supplement.

Hi my name is Ash and I have hashimotos hypothyroids. At first I thought I had an allergic reaction to a cream that I bought, so the doctor gave me Claritin and a 6 pack anti histamine. However I've been 30 days on Claritin and found out my antibodies are attacking my thyroid. I began the AIP and sometimes I react to food and have taken Claritin when my throat swells up. How long does it take for all that anti histamine meds to leave my body while trying to follow AIP? I know the 6 pack takes about 12 days to flush out my system and Claritin stops working after 24 hrs. But in your video you talk about not taking anti hestimines. Can you give me a recommendation of how I go about the AIP and hashimotos hypothyroid with the one month of antihistamines I recently took? The doctors where I live think I'm just stressing, I'm soon to leave to another place and hopefully get help but where I live this is really uncommon. All I have is the normal thyroid meds and I keep telling my doctor that I need to change my diet and he says no.
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 5 лет назад
The one month of antihistamines you took shouldn't affect you starting AIP. If you have issues with throat swelling please do whatever your doctor says, including taking antihistamines. In the video I meant that self medicating with antihistamines long term is not a good idea, but always defer to your doctor's instructions. Hopefully you can find a good functional medicine physician that can help you💕

What is it about fermentation that causes a histamine reaction? Coconut aminos does it to me. I haven’t noticed sauerkraut and I do use chickpea miso occasionally and think that does it.
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 5 лет назад
Fermented foods just contain a lot of histamine that is produced by the bacteria that ferment the food. Anything high in histamine can overflow our bucket. We all have our own unique triggers. I am fine with some foods on the high histamine list but am triggered by others. It can be confusing!

AIP and low histamine is SO freaking hard :( Unless you can be home 24/7 cooking. No leftovers! Ugh. Gelatin also totally does me in :( I have MCAS. I am wondering about pork lard and other animals fats? If pork is high histamine, would lard be as well?
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 4 года назад
The histamine develops from the amino acid histidine in the protein, the fat/lard should be low histamine unless it contains bits of meat like with bacon fat. You can batch cook and portion/freeze all of your meats so you always have cooked meat ready to pull out of the freezer, thaw and eat. It's possible to streamline the process☺

You might try Ben Lynch's genetic test to see if your histamine intolerance is genetic strategene.me/ (Like with me, I don't break down histamine efficiently so it builds up. That means I have to be histamine conscious with my diet, but luckily only with very high histamine foods like ferments) If it isn't genetic that's great news, because it is likely reversible. You could also do Viome testing to see which foods are best for your unique gut health. That's what I would add to this video if I could go back in time!😊

@@RealWorldAIP thanks for the advise. I think it could be genetic, cause I struggled since early childhood with the low blood pressure, dizziness, nausia, insomnia, beeing prone to headaches and migraines all this wonderful untypical not so obvious stuff you can get, which now after all this time got an explanation. For now I focus on avoiding it and healing my gut, but I definitly keep the genetic test in mind for when I am a little better and try to come up with how to eat the most healthy from there on! What ever it is genetic or not, my gut definitly is messed up either way... Thanks for the recommendation, I look it up ^^

Thyroid and histamine issues are likely intertwined, you will need the help of a good functional medicine physician to get to the root cause of the histamine issues, in some cases it can be reversed. Maybe a complete thyroid panel with reverse T3 and T4 is in order. The wrong thyroid medication dosage can be a trigger for histamine issues.

So im on day 2 of this diet. Only symptoms I have had so far that could be viewed as negative were slight nasal drip upon finishing a meal. Happened two days in a row, ate a stir fry both times. One with cow beef the other with lamb chops. So this isn't a big deal right? Runny nose was minor and lasted 10minutes.

Is there a test for histamine intolerance or is it all based on symptoms?
@RealWorldAIP
@RealWorldAIP 5 лет назад
The most accurate way is to do a low histamine trial and see if symptoms resolve, then add back in histamine foods to determine individual tolerance. There are some tests but none more reliable as that. It's kind of like figuring out any food intolerance, elimination diet plus systematic reintroductions always beats the expensive tests. Amy Meyers uses a test from Dunwoody Labs to check lebels of histamine and DAO. But histamine intolerance doesn's always stem from lack of DAO, there can be other root causes..I'd save the $ and do a trial...

Get a 23andme test . That’s how I confirmed my histamine intolerance. The gene mutation and the enzyme have the same name : DAO ( diamine oxidase ) . I’m homozygous for DAO which means I’m the worst variation of the mutation - it’s switched completely off - not good .

I beg to differ that histamine intolerance improves during pregnancy, I am in 2nd trimester and my histamine has been through the roof, and way more sensitive to foods, and way more extreme symptoms, on top of the regular pregnancy symptoms…they said it’s because the placenta has like 500 time more histamine, making it impossible to breakdown fast enough causing overload…I do take Dao enzymes, but it only helps a little, it hasn’t been fun😢

Thanks for referring me to this video. But it's overwhelming and very difficult to follow. But honestly, the level of stress you seem to display may be at one of your root causes of gut issues? If you're doing the AIP diet and your intestines keep reverting to leaky gut, and histamine reactions, there has to be another component at work here. This shouldn't have to be so much work and watching, paranoid of every single food. I feel better on the AIP diet and the histamine reactions are something for me to pay attention, but the diet is so restrictive, I really don't know if a person can be that perfect. It's pretty daunting.
@RealWorldAIP

That is just how I act, I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for life, and a lot of passion for health topics like histamine, I'm not stressed in this video. To someone not familiar with histamine the list of foods that are high in it IS overwhelming and crazy. I sincerely hope you never have a need for this information, but if you happen to have detoxification glitches like I do (which I confirmed with genetic testing and which healing leaky gut will not affect) then it might be something to look into. I am grateful every day that I know what foods trigger me and what foods are safe and which foods I can have in moderation.

@@RealWorldAIP I appreciate you take the time to make these videos, and try to inform, but what you call enthusiasm is coming across as very high strung. Slow down, take time, care about yourself and love yourself. You're working so hard and it doesn't have to be hard. Love, caring for oneself, and gentleness can go a long way to heal gut health. Those "gut feelings" have consequences. They are finding the largest component of leaky gut are people who have been abused or traumatized. We must heal ourselves of past grievances.
