The strike is beneficial for all of the working class, whether strikers, ununionized film workers, or people more broadly. But whenever strikes are talked about in the news or by most politicians, they always fearmonger about it. If there was a nickel for every "threat looms", "averted", or "they'll cost the economy...", we'd have enough money to not need a strike.
@YoungClarke
@YoungClarke 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, its a bit surreal to see how conversations are framed based on who stands to benefit. If its an issue that the poor and middle class stands to benefit from it's all about the potential cost, the danger or 'How can we possibly afford...' The power of labor has slowly been dying from a thousand cuts over the last few decades, glad to see at least a few unions are still strong enough to put up a fight.

“We’re striking for the new generation of creatives.” As someone who is graduating high school soon and was thinking of going into some sort of film industry, you have no idea how happy this makes me. I have always loved narrative story telling. Through my art, my writing, my everything. And one of the most prominent sources to put all of that narrative energy into is in fact, the media of film and video. I have so many ideas that I want to put out there into the world, however a fear I have always had ever since, was the fear of putting my own stories that are so very personal and passionate to me onto a streaming service and having them be shot down and canceled before they even have a chance to show their light. It’s disheartening, and that worry has potential to crush my dreams entirely. However I won’t let it. And the WGA fighting for my generation’s right to have creative power only makes me so much more confident to go forth with my dream. Thank you so very much

The racism in Emily in Paris is shocking especially in season 2 with the ambassador for Ukraine having to step in for the representation of Ukrainian women add to fact the producers that had to bribe Golden Globe judges for its nomination.

Union solidarity! I'm in IATSE, and though many of us are having trouble finding work right now, we are 100% behind the writers. A rising tide lifts all boats! I want to be able to get into the WGA or DGA someday. Right now my partner and I just write our own skits that I direct. If the writers don't dig their heels in now, the opportunities for new artists are going to disappear. Wishing you all the luck and sending my support!! Edit: Hey, he shouted out IATSE! MPEG Local 700 represent! Hopefully we can get VFX folks into unions soon. I work in post, and as hard as it can be for us with crazy deadlines and choking budgets, the VFX folks get it so much worse! 😭

In a roundabout way Demi has just said the thing I needed to hear for the past year. I just graduated and I’ve been trying to figure out how to become a writer but now I understand that it’s impossible because of the studios hiring people who are already in. It makes sense, but I refuse to give up.

not a screenwriter, but same. i’ve been really struggling to figure out what the hell i can do with this degree, it’s hard to stay hopeful but like you said we can’t give up. best of luck to you with finding something that works 💚

It may not sound too helpful, but a benefit of today's landscape is that you can write your own stuff and try to get it out there. My partner and I started off making RU-vid videos that no one watched. But now after a couple years and some formula changes we've started getting a foothold on Tiktok. To the point where we've actually started making some money off of it. It's a crazy slow process but we're hoping it'll pay off in the long run. The key is finding someone to work with who can either help you film your stuff, animate it, or at least do readings. Self-publishing has gotten a lot easier than it ever was before. My dream is to someday work on big-budget films as a writer or director. That's going to be a long road, and with how Hollywood feels about internet creators it may be impossible until attitudes change. But in the meantime I'm working to hone my craft and find a living in it, even a non-traditional one. That's kind of all we can do as creators. Good luck to both of you!

I love the perspective that having a writer/actor involved in the strike offered into the state of the industry. Gives us stuff to think about with the way shows are criticized, and how that might be used to dismiss important things as this strike.

Thanks for this great conversation! I think there's a lot audiences can do: 1. Staying informed, 2 .Understanding, appreciating, and supporting the role of the writer (they are literally the reason why any written content exists), 3. Donating to unions to support writers when they're out of work, and 4. Using critical thinking when watching media coverage of the strike. For example, Reuters has a recent video where a reporter claims that "work stoppage led to the 2007-2009 recession in California." Which is hilarious because in fact, the Lehman Brothers collapse that led to the financial and mortgage meltdown was actually a way greater factor.

I love hearing the union talk! I was part of the group trying to form unions at Activision and it was so gross seeing all the union-busting from our superiors and the things people would say to try and excuse why they're anti-union. Very eye-opening, in a bad way.
@hamoiq908
@hamoiq908 11 месяцев назад
Yeah being anti union to me has always been a sign of low intelligence if you’re an everyday worker in terms of your work place, cause you literally have no reason to not be pro union. Like in the least offensive way, I hide people must just not be able to think as deep and get manipulated to be anti union somewhat easily, much like how racists were found to have lower iq. (Large comp ik but it’s cause any behaviour like that imo just shows a behaviour that when actually thought about w logic for more than a second becomes completely transparent to why it doesn’t make sense)
@Arosukir6
@Arosukir6 11 месяцев назад
It sucks because you have to be careful not to sugar-coat too much when unionizing. I'm working with a group to add a company to our union, and they told us we'd have to innoculate against anti-union BS. Let people know that thing like retaliations from the company will happen, and that yes, we do pay dues but they're more than worth it. And that we may not get everything in the union contract that we want. A wild thing I've learned are less the negative ways that companies will try to break unions (i.e. "You won't have a job if the union goes through"), but instead the positive gentle things they try to do. "We're a family here." "We're not as bad as other places." "Why would you want to unionize if you like working on these projects?" "Office party so show how much we appreciate you all!" It's super friggin' sinister. I don't blame folks for giving in. Sometimes solidarity is scary, and it's always tougher than just sticking it out for yourself. But in the long run it's the best way!

I think you danced around the issue here. With streaming, total views doesn't matter. In fact, streaming services make the most money on subscribers that use the service the least. So the thing that matters most is subscriber growth and retention. But the services don't really know what shows cause someone to subscribe nor what shows they lack that would cause someone to unsubscribe. That's why I think it is a mistake for the WGA to demand residuals based solely on views, rather than on some other more applicable metric. The streamers can't pay per view because their money, unlike in the old days, isn't really based on views. If someone subscribes to Netflix for Stranger Things yet ends up watching way more episodes of Nailed It!, who should get more money?
@ajthewildwolf
@ajthewildwolf 11 месяцев назад
Nailed it cause it kept them in. You might sign up for one thing but what you stick around for is just as important.

That bit was infinitely funnier than what James' show deserved . Also while i'm being complimentary , all three of you are extremely handsome and could easilly beat up elong musk

I've watched some recent Netflix Originals from out of India that were kinda ok, but they weren't great. They definitely felt like 2nd screen things. They weren't bad, bit they weren't very engaging. Easy to get distracted from, but you'll probably just let it keep playing.

Well it's good that you had experience in tech because then you would clearly recognize what happens at the end of a venture capital cycle where the 20 companies formed and funded to sell dog collars online get whittled down to just two. The reality is with all the venture funding and the hype about streaming too many productions were created producing vanilla content which AI is perfectly capable of doing and now the funding is gone we have way too many. Unfortunately that means we have way too many writers. Your best bet would be to explain the economic reality to your colleague and help them understand that in the end money must show up path to profitability and as a venture project a movie or TV production is not created just to see if it's good art. Welcome your writer colleagues to the world of tech and venture capital. If the studios don't offer AI content they will lose competitive advantage to a drove of hedge funds waiting to put AI on the field of play.
