In this video I will show you how to identify and replace a faulty belt tensioner
Parts: 31170-5A2-A03
Tools:
3/8 ratchet: amzn.to/3RdiSZV
- I recommend getting a ratchet with a flex head. This provides ease of movement and more flexibility, especially when used with other jobs
12MM Socket: amzn.to/3V4SwMD
8mm Hex Socket: amzn.to/3V9Z3Ws
17mm wrench: amzn.to/3VjDMZS

What I have learned over the years working on cars is to remove more than what is minimally necessary to make the job easier. I would remove the overflow tank, windshield washer fluid tank and the plastic cover at the bottom of the engine. Having that cover removed, it will be easy to route the belt around the crankshaft pulley and the water pump pulley that you cannot access from the top.

I have the same model and today when driving the car, it sounded like a loud slapping sound under the hood when I came to a stop. It only happens when car is in Drive - idling while stopped. When I put in Park, it immediately goes away. Do you think this is causing it?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
This sounds like an engine mount. I would open the hood and inspect the top engine mount. If you re-watch the video at 3:49 you can see the mount I’m talking about. With a second person I would shift the gear from park to drive (make sure you keep your foot on the brake through the entire process) and observe if the engine is moving a lot. If you do a visual inspection and see black liquid around the mount you can determine for sure the engine mount has failed. Feel free to send me a video or picture through instagram so I can look with you.

It’s not directional, but always make sure the groves of the belt fit into the groves of the pulleys.

Do you recommend changing water pump as well while replacing tensioner and serpentine belt?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 9 месяцев назад
Well it would depend on the situation. If I have around 40-60K miles I would assume it’s got a lot of life left in it. But if the car has a bit more miles 150K+ on it and you want to preemptively replace it so you don’t have to worry about it later then yeah sure I would do it. But the water pump is something that is only replaced if there is a problem with it. Typically it can be left alone, sometimes for the life of the vehicle if coolant flushes have been kept up with.

If you're just replacing the belt due to mileage on it, but not really having issues with squeals or squeaks, is it still recommended to replace the tensioner as well?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
No it’s perfectly fine to just do the belt. You just need to weigh the cost benefit of doing them at the same time. You only pay labor once to do them both vs paying labor once for a belt And then again for a tensioner. But if you were doing it the other way around. Replacing a tensioner because of squeaks and the belt has a couple years on it most definitely I would recommend replacing the belt with it.

So I did all the steps and I ended up stripping the threads on the block that goes into the 8mm. It went in a few threads then it just kept spinning. What can I do now? 😢
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
Oh man I’m sorry to hear that. Here’s what I would do. I would get a thread chaser first. See if i can clean up the threads. Blow out the debris with some Wd-40. And try again without anything assembled first just to see if it will work. There is a difference between a thread chaser and a tap and die set. If the threads are not too bad the thread chaser should clean it up. If it doesn’t then I would switch to a tap. But you need to be careful to go in straight and not at an angle.
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
Also note you want a metric chaser kit not a standard or Imperial.

@@friendlymechanic9778 I just ordered an thread chaser kit. Will be here tomorrow. I just removed the tension pulley bolt and there was a few threads stuck on it. Not a lot. Maybe like 1 full piece thread wrapped around the bolt. The thread chaser should clean up the threads? 🙏
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
Yeah that doesn’t sound too bad. It should be able to clean it up. Also use the chaser on the bolt. If you do both of those it should go right in. Let me know how it goes.

Can you use a 1/2 ratchet instead of a 3/8 one?
@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 2 месяца назад
Sure if you can fit it in there. I think it will be harder though because the 1/2” socket will be bigger and if you use a reducer it will get longer overall in length and it may not fit. If you are fighting leverage. Maybe stick to the 3/8 with a longer handle.
@saulgoodmanj
@saulgoodmanj 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the quick response man and great video! I have a 3/8 but its only 6 inches in length. Would that be too small for this job?@friendlymechanic9778

@@saulgoodmanj yeah it might be too small. The flex head helps a lot as well. You can put a pipe on the end of it and see if that helps too

@friendlymechanic9778
@friendlymechanic9778 Год назад
Hi Amanda so this is very odd to be happening. I have spoken to a few other mechanics if they have experienced anything like this but they haven’t. I have tried to think of what may be happening and I just need to ask a few questions. When tightening down on the 8mm bolt it should not be very tight. If the bolt keeps breaking I would recommend getting a torque wrench and setting it to 55 Nm or 41ft lbs. The 12MM bolt I remove is tightened down to 24NM or 18 FTLBS. Second you mentioned this is the second time it has snapped off in less than 2 months. Is the bolt breaking during tightening or are you finding it broken after driving for some time when you complete the repair. Lastly I will link you a video when I replace the belt on a Honda civic. I know it is not the engine in your vehicle but if the belt is slipping off during installation I understand how frustrating that can be. Follow my procedure to install the belt. I raise the front of the vehicle remove the wheel and use a second person hold the belt as I install it into place. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d9Vb-ziHyiE.html Here is the torque wrench I recommend getting 3/8" Torque Wrench: amzn.to/3PcueOV
