Mike Gurr reviews the all-new Honda Civic SI Coupe with more power, more torque, more curb appeal and maybe a better choice for many people than the flat-out Type R.
With a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and 6-speed manual transmission, the Civic SI Coupe will help inject some excitement into the Civic line for many buyers.

I still have my 2007 Honda Civic Si that I bought from April of 2007 with 11 miles on the odometer. It has now 125,000 miles and just changed its original clutch about 3 weeks ago. My car still runs amazing with zero issue. It just proves the reliability of Honda with the proper maintenance care.

Just purchased a 2018 SI as I have been eyeing them since 2017. Was thrilled when the coupe came out. I absolutely love mine...got the blue for those interested in the color and its absolutely stunning.

I've owned every generation of an Si since 1988. None had a premium feel until now. The 10th gen is something special and the new lower reving turbo engines don't detract from the Si experience one bit. I love my new Si!

n e yeah I noticed mine does that. Did you notice the turbo fights the engine when in 3rd gear driving a steady 37-38 mph? It’s like someone turning on and off the turbo with a switch making the drive feel jerky.

On paper it might not be as fast as a focus st, but independant testing shows its only a tick behind the st thru the 1/4 mile (14.8 for si compared to 14.7 for st) and it is partly because the si is 300 lbs lighter. Dont get caught up in hp numbers kids.

It's interesting how in the comments of any other car review, it's people either hating on the car or talking about stuff that doesn't really relate to the car featured. In Civic SI reviews however, it all seems to be people who are exited about getting one or owners that are happy to have one (Myself included). This is a truly special car to be able to bring that kind of joy to so many people.

Not too much of a fan of the type R looks to boy racer for me personally the SI is exactly what I was looking for, good gas mileage, fun to drive, manual transmission w/ limited slip differential & great seats/steering wheel & shifter lol. I've been in the market for a 2018 Honda Civic si and was wondering what type of fuel you put in it. I know the owner's manual states that the car should receive premium, but can it take regular? Furthermore, I think the car has a knock sensor that changes the ignition timing caused by the difference in the fuel quality. Still, I would like to eliminate knocking altogether to preserve the engine.

I have been buying Toyotas for the last 20 plus years. They are reliable and last forever. My current car is a 2006 Toyota Camry SE V6 with 130K and has never visited a mechanic except for routine maintenance. My daughter is now in college and needs a car, so I am giving her my Camry, which has at least 10 more years and another 150K on it. I was in the market for a 2018 Camry SE, which is a great car, when I saw the Honda Civic Sport on the road. I did some research, and test drove a 2018 Civic Si, and man that thing is a rocket! It's about $4K cheaper than a Camry, about the same hp, but just so much funner to drive. I am still a Toyota man, but this car is to good to pass up, and it is a Honda!

Hey Mike, which car would you buy if you can choose between this Civic SI and the Subaru BRZ? I know they are different cars but I'm not really sure about which would be the best option and I really would appreciate your thoughts!
@mikegurr1491
@mikegurr1491 6 лет назад
Jose Cerdas tough one! Both small sporty cars but you have the option of a 4-door with the Si. Power is comparable but the Si is turbocharged whereas the BRZ is n/a so a very different experience in terms of drivetrain. They're more or less the same weight but the Si is a smidge quicker in a straight line. Most adore the brz's handling, but the Si is no slouch. The Si has dynamic dampers and I don't believe that's available on the BRZ. I'm gonna give interior features/comfort/quality to Honda. Overall you're looking at two great sporty little cars that are more or less the same $$. I'd personally go for the Si as it suits my style a little more and I like the gearbox/damper combo.

I have seen a video where they used a regular turbo 17 civic vs a 15 si and the si got smoked. Does this mean the new si will be way better than the previous gen si?
@collincresta6679
@collincresta6679 7 лет назад
Juliet Kunai Not really because they put a smaller engine in the si and used the turbo to make up for the power. It is similarly matched to previous si's in 0-60, the real advantage the new car has is the adaptive dampening and limited slip differential

I went ahead and bought a Red Coupe Si over the weekend, I test drove a Silver one on a Saturday and the transmission and shifting was very very smooth. I picked up the Red one I wanted on Monday morning and the shifting wasn't really that smooth at all. The silver one I drove on Saturday was the one that they had designated as a "test drive" car. Now, granted I only driven my car from the dealer back to my house and have been reading the Honda manual and using my old car. What if the car I bought doesn't turn out to have the same smooth shifting/transmission as the one I test drove? Could it be a "break in" period issue (it only has 26 miles on it) or is there that big a difference between one car and another?
@mikegurr1491
@mikegurr1491 6 лет назад
Jimmy, I'm not a mechanic by any stretch but if you're that concerned I would pay the dealership a visit. There is a break in period for most vehicles, sometimes requiring specific driving technique etc. There is debate about length/style of break in, however. Safest bet is to follow mfg. suggested break in period which can typically be found in your owners manual.
@jimmydaves
@jimmydaves 6 лет назад
Mike. Thanks so much for your help. I finally drove my Si today after a week and a half after buying it. I had surgery recently and just took time out to rest (and read the Si manual). After driving it today, it's ok, but it's still not like the one I test drove at the dealership. It's hard to explain in words but I'll try. It's not the transmission so much as it's the shifting. The car at the dealership I test drove, it's shifting from one gear to the next was so easy, smooth; no resistance - almost like I barely had to touch the knob and quiet. Whereas my car, there's a noticeable click.. click...click requiring more effort in shifting the shift knob. I know this sounds strange as hell but I've been driving manuals since I was 16 and the shifting on my car is noticeable different than the car I test drove. Now the performance of the car seemed just fine today, except for the shift knob issue. With the help of the Si manual, I mastered the radio and the A/C today! Just as a side note The salesman I had been speaking to over the phone regarding the Si for a few weeks was not the salesman I ended up with at the dealership and sadly, I did not like the new guy at all. I told him what car I wanted; I test drove the car; and I wanted to buy it - cash purchase - NO financing. I was there for over 4 hours dealing with this guy's BS. For some reason, he had to leave his desk every 5 minutes. I told him that I had just had surgery a few days ago and wanted to get this purchase done with - he didn't care. When I finally left, I refused to shake his hand. That was on a Saturday a week and a half ago and I picked up my car 2 days later on Monday morning. I only drove it 20 miles to my house but enough to know that it didn't feel like the car I test drove. I didn't drive it again until today a week and a half later. I told the dealership this week of my experience and I told them that if I had driven my car as the test drive car; I wouldn't have purchased the Si. I must say they were very kind and helpful. When you have a bad salesman, buying a new car is one of the worst experiences you can go through.

In case you want proof im getting my car tuned in about a month and i will show the dyno charts(mustang) but my last visit yielded 203hp and over 210lb/ft of torque(i never thought so many people would be complaining so never thought to remember it. I was tuning my EVO X and threw on my SI out of curiosity). But you dont need to believe me. There are tons of publications that will tell you the car is underrated. So Honda did give the power boost people wanted. Accounting for drivetrain loss we can say the car at crank is around 230 to 240 hp easily. In a straight line the car may be minimally faster but comparing track numbers between previous an current gen will yeild the true difference and upgrades between generations. Ive driven STIs, WRXs and of course EVOs and i feel more confident pinning the throttle in my SI more than i ever did the previous 3. That LSD is pure sex on front wheels. You have to drive it to understand. I dont get the hate. This car is an improvement in everyway(minus that annoying rev hang, any1 kno how to get rid of that?). I cant wait to track it but I've seen timeslips very reminiscent of wrx times with higher trap speeds to boot. The fwd architecture has its limitations in a straight line. So my first mod was!!...new tires...not so exciting but im taking full advantage of the aforementioned hp bump. Any new SI owner can thank me later. Forget flashing the ECU, intake etc you want to smoke an ST get your SI some new rubber to maximize what you already have.

@carlmanu
@carlmanu 7 лет назад
+Mike Gurr most people that get the sedan, get it because of the four doors thus it makes more sense to replace it with the hatch which keeps the same amount of doors but more cargo space. The coupe has a different flare to it in terms of styling and that's its main appeal. I agree with you about the trunk space being small but that should create a gap in between the hatch and coupe in terms of utility as the sedan has also a small trunk compared to the hatch albeit bigger than the coupe.

You can't clutch properly so you don't like the shifter?
@mikegurr1491
@mikegurr1491 7 лет назад
I was using "shifter" to more generally refer to the shifting experience. Technically speaking the actual shifter was excellent, as I mentioned. Clutch is very light but progressive. The position of the brake to the throttle was odd making rev matching hard. I was able to compensate by changing the angle of my right foot but couldn't quite get it right. Your mileage my vary!

That one thing I don’t like about Honda, almost are turbos instead of naturally aspirated 6 speeds 😤 and not even standard LED’s like Toyota

Really wish they had given the Si Sedan the same bumper treatment as the coupe. It's just horrible with the huge tacked on plastic fake vents. Coupe looks so much better.

I think the exhaust looks ridiculous for such a small engine. Overall the car looks great tho

Sad reacts, Australia doesn't offer Si instead a shitty RS hatch version for 170 hp it's ridiculous.

Test drove both. IMO if its a sunday car for fun, nothing beats Front engine RWD. But It's your daily driver, I'd personally take the Si.

As this is a sports model, some basic performance and fuel economy numbers should be presented.

I mentioned the combined fuel economy figure of 7.4l/100. Zero - 100kph is listed at 6.5 seconds.
