A while back we promised we'd do it - and here we are, fulfilling that promise. In today's video we see how long a slightly modified Lada engine can work underwater.

The water between the plug´s electrode and the motor casing has a much lower resistance than the spark-plug air-gap. You´d need to isolate the high voltage connection to the sparkplug with epoxy (several millimeters clearance to water and no metal content in the epoxy). I´m pretty sure it would work then.
@dogwalker666

Silicone sleeve is good enough especially in freshwater, an underwater exhaust is not a problem, all outboard engines exhaust under water, part of the military specs for landrover and champ was they had to run under water.

Wow, this is really interesting! As long as you've sealed everything up and have got the snorkel attached, the engine should be perfect happy running fully submerged. What's intriguing here is the situation where the engine stalls when submerged, but then repeatedly starts up again when hoisted out of the water. This indicate there's absolutely no water ingress anywhere. If there was water leaking in, you wouldn't be able to restart the engine after the first dipping. There's only one thing I can think of being the culprit here. Arcing in the HT cables when the engine is submerged. Mind you, as the engine fire up happily once out of the water, there's nothing wrong with the actual cables, they are fine. What we are looking at is a bad ground connection somewhere between the ignition coil and the spark plugs. Up in the atmospheric air, the resistance added to the HT circuit by the bad connection does not affect the running of the engine. However, this changes as soon as the ignition system is in the water. Suddenly, when submerged in a liquid with a higher electrical conductivity than air, the resistance in that bad ground connection makes a difference. The HT current will always travel the route offering the least resistance. Usually this is through the spark plugs. But in water, with the added resistance, that is no longer the case. The current will instead form an arc, and jump straight to the engine block. Basically, the ignition coil is shorting out. Then, as soon as the engine is back upon the air, the best route for the HT current is again through the spark plugs, and everything works fine. Please, clean and repair the ground connection at the ignition coil, and repeat the experiment. I am willing to bet it then works fine!

Years ago we took an old Jeep Gladiator, stripped off the body, and added some 33 inch tires. We drove it into a river to see how long it would run. No waterproofing was done to the engine. The plugs and distributor were submerged and it ran perfectly. Even the alternator worked under water. We stopped when the carb was submerged, with only the air cleaner above water. It never missed a beat. Those old distributors were notorious for missing when they got wet.

An engine can take a bit of water in the intake( they actually make water injection systems), but too much is getting in that carb. Btw, keep the RPM's above 2000rpm, and the entire exaust CAN BE SUBMERGED. it'll get quiet as hell, and blow lotsa stinky, smoky bubbles, and still run! 🤪👍💯

I know exactly how long a 350sbc will last under the water when you jump it into a lake. This was a rough weekend and there was no recording because we were focused on getting the truck out, unlocking it(hydrolocked after 15 minutes or so, maybe longer), and staying warm in 20-30° weather after getting soaked. Needless to say, we pulled the truck out of the water, pulled the plugs, drained the motor, and we refreshed it on land. We fired it right back up and drove it home. I have pictures of that weekend and highly recommend having a charged phone before you go mudding one weekend without letting anyone know. Lesson learned and a lot of fun. Just very cold.

Curious. I recon it must be pulling water either through the Vacuum Advance on the distributor, or the PCB Valve. I’d like to see if that’s the case, as you mentioned that’s when it started dying was about the Distributor and/or Valve Cover. Perhaps greasing or otherwise sealing all the vacuum lines would solve the issue?

Once had a power barrow ie a wheelbarrow with a small petrol engine attached. That went into the canal and sank we dragged it out thinking it would be shot . But just like here it started first time no problems and continued to work too .
