I once had a guy at the gym tell me he ate like 16,000 calories a day. He seemed convinced of it too, despite the fact that it is so far out of the realm of possibility that even half of that as a daily intake is completely absurd.

Even if he ate an absolute shit garbage diet, it would be impossible to eat 16k every day.
@johnsmith5139

energy on food labels is sometimes measured in kilojoules or calories (or both). 1 calorie is equal to 4 kilojoules. this confused me at the start because some foods only list kilojoules and to convert it to calories you have to divide by 4. i bet this guy is mistaking calories for kilojoules, so his 16000 kj is probably more like 4000 calories, which is much more realistic. either that or hes just lying.
@Sealed_Chamber

@@johnsmith5139 He definitely wasn't telling the truth, but I don't think he was intentionally lying, he was just so insanely out of touch and ignorant that he actually seemed to believe it.

The amount of times I've had this same conversation with people over the years is insane! Eating is like training, gradually increasing calories/food over time, as and when needed. We're not all the same, not all of us have the frame of Hafþor or, Brian Shaw. I'm only 5.9, the heaviest I've ever been is 17.5 stone, around 245lbs. That was hard work getting there, slowly increasing calories so not to just add fat! Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a physique or, strength. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

That video Eddie Hall made of him eating his old strongman diet and he claimed it was like 16,000. I was very doubtful as he was being very generous with how many calories he was claiming was in the particular foods. Like claiming the bit of cream he added to the cheesecake was something obscene like 400 calories. He also said stuff like “4 pieces of fried bread” when really it was 2 slices cut in half. Just all seems to be a big flex for them.

This is a fantastic video, thanks Loz! A link to this should be placed as a disclaimer on every "X calories per day" diet video out there. I know most people see those videos as they are meant to be... an interesting window into the life of a professional strongman, but you're right Loz, like everything else, there are going to be impressionable people out there who feel like if they eat/train/etc like their favorite athlete, they will be like them. If you want to eat like a 6'9" 200kg pro athlete, you should probably be a 6'9" 200 kg pro athlete. Plus, some of those guys (Shaw for example) have a nutritionist who helps design their diets. The average Joe doesn't have that. I'm enjoying the shorter-format videos lately Loz... easier to digest... har har... Keep up the great work!

Nice one, Loz! I think people miss the fact that pro strongmen have worked so hard (literally giving blood, sweat and tears) to reach this level with years of dedication to the needs of their body and their sport. There’s no get-strong-quick program and the food is a means to an end, fuel that’s required for the level of work you do. Not a means to an end. Thanks for the great vid - keep ‘em coming.

Big Loz, Your recent videos have been really insightful. The type of content you produce is what the sport really needs, vs the spectacle style social media that a lot of the other athletes used to promote their brand. Rooting for you from here on out in all the competitions. PS. If you see this comment I am curious, everyone's always talking about food consumption, but what type of and what quantity of liquids do top strong man consume. How much water does it take to compensate for volume of electrolytes and salts in your 6000 calorie diet?

I have a thyroid condition called Graves disease where my body sends my metabolism into overdrive. It went unchecked for years and I ended up with a particularly bad case and I can tell you right now that I couldn't eat at the start what I could in the end. 2 days before I started my treatment I spent every waking moment going between the kitchen in order to eat something and the bathroom to... well it made room for more. I had breakfast cereal from a pot. I had a huge fry up which I washed down with 4 pints of milk. I had endless Mars bars and the like and plenty of crisps. 4 breaded chicken breasts, 5 or 6 mashed tatties and a can of beans for lunch. I made up a pot of custard and plonked a huge ginger cake in it. my last meal of the day was 2 pizzas from Domino's and 2 portions of wedges before going round the corner to get another pizza from my local kebab shop. that probably wasn't 10000 calories but it was a stupid amount and really expensive. I don't think I could do 2 days, no way could I go for weeks. What was Glenn Ross eating to end up at 248 KG at his heaviest? Even though I averaged somewhere around 4000 calories a day I still ended up losing about 45 kilos overall. metabolism is something else.

Great video, educational, straight to the point and informative. Thanks for it. But I have a question, I might be wrong but I think most Olympia level bodybuilders eat aroun 6,000cal a day in the off season. If they are eating that much, isn't it a bit short for top-level strongmen considering that strongman atheletes are much bigger, their training is somewhat more intense and they do not care about body fat or aesthetichs as much as a bodybuilder? Thanks.

The longer and heavier your lifts, the more calories you burn, the more calories you need. The heavier your muscle mass, the more calories you need to feed them. It's all basic math that people can do to find out how much they need to eat. So unless you're 6'2+, 400lb and training for a top tier professional competition, you don't need to force feed yourself 6000+ calories a day, or anywhere near it.
@budthecyborg4575
@budthecyborg4575 4 года назад
"Getting Fat" is partly the goal though. Just having more body fat allows your body to maintain muscle better. If you're over 30% Body Fat then that is definitely "Too Fat", but Brian and Eddie are normally around 25% Body Fat while competing. For guys who are chronically thin (e.g. Larry Wheels), it can help to really push the calories up.

Even with the fats i add to my food i can never go beyond 3500 without feeling overwhelmed and the next day my body is not hungry from still feeling satisfied. So i end up eating even less calories the next day. If youre getting a little heavy from fat. Drop the carbs back for a few weeks. You wont lose strength in fact your strength goes up. Gyms are close all i have access is 2 24kg kettlebells and some elastic bands and some bricks and stones. I dont think ill be going to the gym except to deadlift until i can either built a platform or get a squat rack and a wide bench from rogue.

You make some solid points. It's important that people are cautious about consuming more than the RDA for calories. A gorilla apparently can lift 815 kg yet consumes about 600 less calories than a human per day. I know, different species, different story. But even our ancestors had lived with far fewer calories at their disposal than we modern humans. I just don't think we are meant to eat 10,000 calories a day is all. That's why strongmen tend to deal with health issues. That's why Eddie always says he probably took years off his life.
